Yes, you can install Safestrap and install it's recovery. Safestrap was basically made for phones with locked bootloaders, and it will allow you to install TouchWiz ROMs onto your S4. I was like you, rooted with towelroot and on the newest firmware. I then installed Safestrap and am now running my own personal favorite ROM. You are clear to install it!

Am I only able to install touchwiz roms or can I use any s4 rom in safestrap? I saw the pacman rom the other day and am really interested in it but I'm afraid I'll brick my phone lol. Oh and do you by chance know which version of safestrap I can use on my phone?

You are only able to use TouchWiz based ROM's with Safestrap unfortunately, which is a huge bummer but we have to live with what we get, we should be thankful we even get ROM's at all. The only exception to this is a new ROM that was just released, and it's an AOSP Google Play Edition ROM, for which the info related to it can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...ow-to-install-aosp-s4-google-edition-t2817708
Also, stick to Safestrap version 3.72. It's the most stable one for Verizon phones currently.

If you are installing safestrap 3.72, don't forget to set SE for android to permissive. It might not work If you dont do this. To do this, install terminal emulator from the play store if you already haven't. Open the app up and type in "su". This will prompt a superuser request. Accept the request and type in "setenforce 0" to change SE for android from "enforcing" to "permissive". It will set itself back to "enforcing" upon reeboot. Good luck finding a rom and installing safestrap

you could also install SELinuxModeChanger from the Play Store (its a free app) and hit the "Permissive" button once it installs. then reboot your phone. voila.

[Q] Upgrade From MDK - Don't Care About bootloader

I've been trying hard to find the answer and I just can't - I searched these threads for a while.
I currently have Galaxy S4 with MDK which is rooted and has the unlocked bootloader.
I have SDM and SEAndroid frozen on Titanium Backup.
I want to un-freeze those and upgrade to the newest version but still keep my root and all of my root apps. I don't care about the unlocked bootloader - all the root apps I use don't have anything to do with using the bootloader (well I have twrp installed but don't use it).
Can I use OTA Rootkeeper, unfreeze SDM and SEAndroid and take the OTA update? Will I still have root access (again remember, I don't need to have unlocked bootloader)?
I ask because I'm very happy with everything on my phone the way it is - I like where my apps are, I like everything. I don't want to bother flashing roms - I just have no interest. I want to do the update and have everything the way it was and all my folders in their place (less the unlocked bootloader) and still have root for my programs like Titanium Backup and Greenify. super su - etc.
Please - any help would be appreciated.
Afaik, taking the update will ineed cost you your current root. However, I am on stock 4.3 and root using vroot and then used a script to uninstall the foreighn superuser app and add supersu. I have experienced no ill effects as of yet, though some would say that they aren't comfortable using this root method. There is no evidence to support it being entirely safe nor malicious in intent. It does provide root and you can keep all your apps data. Though...if you take the update, I would strongly suggest a factory reset to decrease potential problems...just my 2 cents buddy

The bootloader is technically only bypassed through a Loki exploit, not unlocked.
For all intents & purposes that doesn't change anything to most users so I don't know what Richii was trying to get at.

I have an MDK so I don't need it. But please do someone a favor, don't kill that MDK S4. Either just flash a rooted 4.3 that was designed for your MDK device, or sell it to someone so they have the opportunity to play with it. There are a ton of people on this forum stuck on the newer versions that would kill to get what you have.

I won't kill it if I knew how to upgrade stock rom without losing my apps and data - lol. That's really my problem. Looks like there's a stock rom here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517611 - but there are so many files there. I have no idea what to do or which one to download? I don't know what Loki'd Kernel is or Aroma installer, deodexed, etc etc (and I don't have the time) - I just want to upgrade and keep my apps and data the way they are - lol. If after I upgrade it's no good - I'll go back to my backup.
I have MDK with TWRP installed.
Thanks!

With the MK2 build you can only use safestrap as your custom recovery and your limited on what custom roms you can use. I'm on the MK2 build as well and personally I like the stock rom with the tether mod.

Okay Buddy with the MK2 builld you can only use TW based roms no ASOP/Cyanogenmod.
1.) To root u must use saferoot here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565758
2.) Then you must install Safestrap 3.71 Hashcode has a thread about ithere: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2441441
3.) After doing that you want to look on this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2630040
decarturbob has compiled a list of MK2 Safestrap Compatible roms.
Hope this helps buddy. Make sure you read the threads carefully and follow each step. My current fav roms are the TW(ASOP themed roms):fingers-crossed:
Thank you all for the help. Really appreciate it.
To add to my question, after rooting, running the stock ROM, can I turn off OTA updates? I keep getting an annoying notification to update.

Using Titanium Backup, you can "freeze" applications, which keeps them from running. The software update application is called SDM.
So, open Titanium, search for "SDM", the click on "Freeze!". It won't run any longer.

You flash the modules file AFTER you flash a custom ROM into a ROM slot. How did you manage to flash into a ROM slot if you can't get into Safestrap recovery?
If installing Safestrap fails and tells you you're not rooted, then either you're not rooted, or you still have Knox enabled. You'll need to be rooted before you can do any of this, so start there. See the Saferoot thread.

[Q] How to install CM11 on Galaxy S4? (Verizon)

Okay starting off, I went straight to cyanogenmod's page but it specifically stated "you must be on build I545VRUAMDK"...
There lies the problem. My phone is build KOT49H.I545VRUFNC5.
I got it from Verizon like this, already updated.
It's running kitkat 4.4.2.
Now, the benefit is that I already have root, through Towelroot V3.

I've searched on Google and still cannot find a direct answer.
So please can someone tell me where to go to figure this out? Or if you know how kindly tell me?
I've installed Safestrap as well.

If you MUST be on MDK to install the ROM and you are on NC5, then I reckon you can't install the ROM. There are not many ROM's available for those of us on NC5 and Safestrap unfortunately.

HyperDrive is solid. I'm on BlackBox right now and I like it better. It is stupid fast but a little buggy as it is a newer ROM. Another option would be to stay with the stock NC5 use Wanam Xposed from the XposedFramework. It allows quite a bit of customization if that is what you're looking for. There are some solid options being on NC5, just make sure you take the time to read through the threads before you flash anything.

Best way to go is to update to nc5. From there install towelroot to gain root then safestrap. You might also need to download selinux changer from the play store. If safestrap doesn't work then go into selinux and set to permissive. From there flash away any TW based rom. I prefer echoerom. I had a Galaxy nexus with AOKP. Really miss being able to use it.

it'll probably be your only method. the Chinese seem to be taking over these root and jailbreak exploits. over on iOS, TaiG is the only group who has a jailbreak for the newest versions of that. and kingroot seems to be getting a similar status for people who want one-click root exploits.
keep in mind, root is a dangerous thing and it seriously harms the security of your device. you may not trust the Chinese, but they've probably been doing this all along.
good news though, you can replace the kinguser stuff with SuperSU somehow. don't ask me, I'm still running KitKat

Apparently you can flash Stang5litre ROM on OTA 5.01 using Flashfire. I haven't tried it myself but if you go to the last couple of pages on the Stang5litre topic you will see post from those who were successful in flashing it on OC1.
