Big Thank you - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

I would just like to write a big thank you to all, for all the information on the Z Ultra.
I haven't posted ( well at all ) as I do a lot of research to help with my problems and info to either root or upgrade which I have done from 4.4.3 to now 4.4.4 with the stock rom ( rooted )
From what I have been reading in a lot of the development forums, I admire you guys for the amount of repeated questions about what you do. I:E Roms, kernals, etc. Can I run this etc etc and can you fix this because my phone won't run it.. etc etc when someone has already asked the same question a million times.
I did have a galaxy s2 which I had rooted and changed roms many of times, so because of you all I can now do The Z Ultra.
Big thanks to NUT, chemup, DOGG and everybody else for their input.
Thanks guys... Love ya work
ps. Couldn't put this into the developers forums and thank the individual developers for the work they have done as I have been a naughty boy and not posted enough
Cheers and keep up the great work guys..

Yeah I wanted to post a similar reply for thanks to the community but saw your post and figure I post in your thread . I got bored at work a week ago and decided to try out a new rom and went through a bunch of threads, and boy was it worth it in the end. I figure I try the Slim Kat 6 stable and all I can say WOW!
I have only charged my phone for the second time in about 7 days. That is with decent amount of usage of work email, Google hangouts, and just messing with the phone in general. Great work on this awesome device.
Only confusing part is, that I may have missed it in the many threads, to use the custom recoveries you have to boot the phone and wait for the purple notification light to come and then press up or down on the volume button.
But awesome stuff here and I really recommend Slim Kat. I went from charging my phone every day to what appears to be every 3 days. Also to change the screen DPI to something near 300 since the stock DPI is a tad too low IMO.

General What-Not

I have to say I am impressed with the overall performance of my Cyanogen 7 6.2.4, I was skeptical but now I am very pleased....The feel and appearance of it is just magnificent, I give many many thanks to the developers who spend countless hours porting and working with this low level phone to give us what we all want. I just have a few questions, so Im not searching numerous hours over a thread
1. Is it possible to have a Sense UI ported to our LG Optimus phones and everything in it actually work, b/c with alot of Sense UI roms, there is always something that isnt quit working ie..BT, Camera and other things
2. What does Honeycomb bring to the table that Gingerbread does not ? Also, I have heard of "Icecream", what can we expect with that version ?
3. I would love to see just one thread dedicated to teaching a complete noob everything he needs to know on cooking, flashing, ADB, or anything that has to do with Android than have a seperate thread to questions that could be ask...There are literally hundreds if not thousands of articles already on this but it would be nice if there was one centralized forum thread on everything I just said. As a novice user, Im limited to what I already know but would love to learn more.
Many thanks goes to the Dev's who spend countless hours tinkering over these Android platforms, if it werent for all of you, we would be stuck with the same boring useless stocked rom's that our LG's come with
1. work is being done by ciaox and hopefully he will come out soon with a bugless rom.
2.use google...doesn't take much time...
3.there is a sticky at starting in development forum use that....post your questions in general forum(after searching once).....
hit thanks if i helped you

Why upgrade from stock?

I apologize if this subject has been covered before but my searches did not turn up anything. I am an Android newbie with a new Tab 10.1. It seems to work quite well but since the OS allows for easy customization and many people do it, I feel like I am probably missing something. What is there to be gained by moving away from stock? With so many options out there, how does one choose between them?
If there is an article or forum thread that covers this subject in language that newbies will understand, I would really appreciate being pointed in that direction. If such a document does not exist, hopefully someone can answer the questions here.
Visual mods to performance enhancemants are why people tinker with Android ad their devices.
Read as much as you can before you do anything or make any changes.
As far as which is best. That's up to you. Try them all until you find what you like.

I agree Beezer that reading is the key to android world. try as much as you like because it is very hard to brick android devices
Thanks guys, I am sure that you are right about reading as much as possible. The problem is that I am so green that I do not even know what I don't know. Any suggestions on where to start my research?

Galaxy Task ftw...
I have been running Task's roms since I got my tab. His current rom GalaxyTask v6.3 is as smooth it gets at least until an ICS variety is available.
Link is in my signature.
I think the thing to do is just use your Tab for a while before getting stuck into rooting it, give yourself chance to discover it's shortcomings (if any), if you feel it isn't quite up to par, look around for the most suitable fix.
I've had my Tab since August and I haven't yet felt the need to root it, I do keep looking at the threads in the dev section though, one day I'll get tempted but that's not today.
I'll try and hold out for official updates, unless I get really bored and decide to risk my warranty status.
turn to the darkside of rooting and adding a rom. at first i was nervous but after you get a feel of the roms like tasks roms.. omg there is no turning back. it is like night and day and you'll never want to go back to stock

Thank you XDA, for making me what I am today

Yes yes, this is a life story thread, but I want to chronicle how far we have come in the last few months, and the incredible teamwork this community has.
Around march, I got my Galaxy Player for the first time. With the galssy eyes of a techno geek unwrapping his new gadgets, I tore open the box, and beheld my shiny new toy, something, which I did now know at the time, that would take me far beyond my wildest dreams of technical success. Of course I bricked it withing the first 3 hours, "accidentally" deleting ALL the dalvik control settings from build.prop, and not having adb installed at the time, or even knowing what the heck Odin was, spent a merry 7-8 hours trying to get my prized posession back to it's stock state. I probably repartitioned and flash over 50 times that night, which was also when I flashed the INTL bootloader off of zaclimon's thread (little knowing that I would have a healthy partnership with him in just a few months), and thet next morning, I was back in business.
Of course I crack-flashed ALL the rom's there were for the 4.0 at the time. Klin's klassic, steve's, rooted stock, whatever I could find. I just couldn't help but feel slightly depressed that there wasn't really much of a dev presence for my new device, and I was more the enviously eyeing the 5.0's ICS builds. So I lurked for a few months, pondering whether I should even activate my dormant XDA account, scared that I was just too much of a noob to actually get help.
One day though, I took the plunge. I decided that I was going to try and get my feet wet in this "xda" thing, and maybe browse general, helping the occaisonal user in distress. Just 1 day later, I posted my first contribution thread, without even having 10 posts! The tweak guide for the Player, how proud I was of it. All the nice tweaks I had enjoyed on my TF and had discovered for my Gplayer, all there for my own personal quick applying.
2 days after that, I began asking klin1344 about ICS, as reading through some threads, I thought I heard some rumours about a secret underground build that may have been surfacing, as well as whether or not SGS (what is that?) tweaks can be used on our player. He pleasantly responded with the fact that no, there was no ICS, and he had never considered using SGS tweaks. Would I like to be his dev partner?
I will not lie to you, this FLOORED me. Little me, the noob who had maybe had is Gplayer for 2 weeks, and barely knew his way around the terminal, being asked by a dev to help him? Easily one of the proudest moments of my XDA career. I signed up immedately, we began discussing, and ended up coming to a mutual agreement that partnering may not be the best idea, as we both had differing opinions on what should constitute a ROM. He was going to let me support Klassic (my favorite rom), and he was going to start a SGSII themed rom (which turned into ICY fusion.
With joy in my heart, I learned the basics I needed from him (such as DD) and began applying all the tweaks I had from my tweaks thread into this rom. I decided to rename it "stratusrom", and include multiple releases. One beta, one weekly, and one stable. This was nixed completely as soon as I learned how hard devving could be, and after a few false starts that long time forum members will remember, and renaming it "stratusrom" and eventually "etherealrom" (hence the celestially-named projects that I am related to, if you guys wanted to know), I began devving. Not much happened here, I released a few iterations, guiding hands such as daniel644 and the dev zaclimon provided their amazing help to the poor little dev who could (me), trying to make a decent rom. At one point, I had a falling out with Klin (whcih I am sure most of you remember, that was a scary night for me, the little dev, being whaled on full-force by a senior-class dev, with both us us threatening to remove our work), but let's not dig up old bones. Long story short, I rethemed my rom, made it not-klassic, and just worked on it until about mid-july.
In the meantime, I was releasing a whole slew of threads documenting my research. Who knew that SGS roms could be easily ported, and that rom creation wasn't scary? I had a blast finding all of these things out, and even gained a small following during this time, as most development had died off, with klin never really getting his heart back into 4.0 development, tdm leaving, and Balor leaving his kernel for good.
Then it happened. I decided to spearhead an ICS initiative (as at the point, while I didn't even know what a compiler was, thought I was knowledgable enought to start something like that), to finally get it working. Ah, the good old days. Me, neyodmiun and zaclimon, swapping ideas, with the occaissonal user popping in to offer advice or to comment on our progress. Around this time, I also began getting support questions, and as I answered them nicely, and genuinely tried to help them beyond the normal "find my help post" and no response afterwards, and ended up getting a reputation as being someone who wouldn't blow off noobs (not that I am accusing anyone of doing so, but I know that some devs do not take users seriously at all). zaclimon offered up the idea of hiring a freelance dev, and that was ultimately accepted as our plan. Enter Oisis.
This is where most of you guys will know me from. With Oisis on board, we booted ICS on august 13th, and were in business after that. I formed a team aptly named "TeamSuperNova", and got to work learning what the heck GCC was, and where the vendor folder went. What's github again?
Not much to tell from here, as the rest is just history.
I want to thank everyone on XDA for making this journey possible. From klin1344, and zaclimon, to goldflame, and all the other users to have taken on the excellent role of support, so that we can work on what really matters, I think I, no WE have accomplished what we wanted. While our entire community is very small, we are all united as a TEAM, working together like clockwork. Some new user has an issue with cm9? The support team is on it right away, and we normally have their issues sorted out in a few hours. Someone wants to start development? Zaclimon, me, or any of the other devs quickly pop in and give them some advice on where to start, and some resources to use. Any PM that I get, however noobish or "silly" it seems, I answer, and most of the time I actually get it resolved. So don't be afraid to speak up and give your opinion or ask for help. That's what we all are here for. To help, and contribute, as much as we can.
Thank you XDA, users, and everyone for making all of this possible. Now that my speech is over, feel free to put up your own personal story, or just discuss.
Where did you actually start to learn to dev? I've been wanting to start and I asked Meticulus (if you remember him, he was part of the old dev family) and all he told me was "Read a lot " Not the best answer.

Well quite honestly, I just picked it up here and there. Devving isn't really something you "pick up overnight", or read a how to on. Essentially the best way to learn how to dev, is to do something horrible to one of your devices, and then try to fix it . I can't tell you how much I learned when I bricked my player for the first time. What's Odin? You mean cwm installs WITH the kernel? Just take you're time, try and Google anything you may have questions about, and ask devas anytime you have a problem (hopefully in pm). Other than that, my ROM creation guide may help you get started (although I really need to clean it up), and once you feel confident enough to start compiling, pop me a pm, and I will be happy to guide you through any questions you may have.

Thanks for the compliment! I HATE it when devs get a superiority complex over their users, and basically refuse to talk to them/help them, or do so in an extremely condescending way, which hurts the community more than it helps, especially a small one like this.
To start revving, just refer to my response above, and pop me a pm whenever you need any help .
I've hard bricked my Player twice and I guess I know how to recover from any situation, I know all the things and headaches associated with bricking a player and such. But thanks for your reply!

[Q] questions & complains

Hi all,
I'll eventually buy a S3, that's why I am posting here, but before I do that I want to leave here my questions / complains.
I own a SAMSUNG GT-I9000 running a CyanogenMod 10 nightly build 10-20120918.
I've been using this phone for 2 years and I've tried several ROMS.
My experience with this phone and with this OS is rather disappointing since most of the time the phone is in alpha or beta.
I mean all the ROMS I've tried had bugs (TouchWiz maybe is stable but I do not like it).
For example, I power on my phone and the OS crashes, after some minutes when I manage to get to the home screen I get "Google Search isn't responding. Do you want to close it?". Not to mention that some apps need at least 10 sec to launch.
I really appreciate the effort of the developers but I just don't get it that are appearing ROMS with such severe bugs.
So I've decided to buy a new phone but once again I am between the devil and the deep blue sea.
I've spent some time in shops testing Galaxy S3, HTC One X and IPhone 5 and wondered:
1. How can it be that Galaxy S3 with quad processor on board is performing so bad compared to dual core of IPhone 5? All apps on IPhone are opening almost instantly, not the case on S3. I can clearly see that S3 is not as responsive as IPhone 5 and if you have done the same as I did you cannot deny it.
2. How HTC manages to build such a beautiful OS and Samsung not? TouchWiz looks like is made for kids just like the custom ROMS for it. I know Sense is not perfect but at least is an eye catcher. There is not even one theme for S3 that appeals to me. Or is there someone here who likes to see pink unicorn as logo? If I were 10 years old maybe I would like to have icons with popey, smurfs, heidi and barbie on my phone, but I am not. So the most among you I think...
Maybe can someone can answer these questions...
As I said I ll probably go for the S3 for several reasons but these things really bother me. I'm afraid it 'll be the same story again...Having a super smartphone and not even able to make a phone call...
Are you some sort of idiot....if you have so much to complain about dont buy the damn phone! Dont come on here whining about it! Not really the best place to be comparing the processing power to an iphone is it??

Here's a bit of advice:
DON'T SPAM THE BOARD,
if you just want to complain about every freakin' ROM, don't do it at all..
test things before posting cr*p like this,
GET STABLE ROMS!!!
WIPE DALVIK BEFORE RUNNING OSs
BUY THIS GOD FOR SAKEN PHONE, GET MIUI AND BE HAPPY!!!
AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE MIUI, GET CM9 IT'S THE MOST STABLE TO DATE.
By the way: Thanks, you just ruined my evening. Cheers, mate! Have a good day

The beauty of android lies in the flexibility and customization.
S3 is way better than any Apple
If you like Apple, go and buy it, what are you comparing for?
There are many stable roms for all phones, I use viking, with nova launcher, I am happy.
Everyone has different set of needs and preferences, don't waste your own or others time by convincing others or asking us to convince you.
Be yourself.

Report no. 5 in one day. One more and I'll break my own record.
Oh, and you did just reply..
Please, go spam Rootzwiki, or some other forum, but not this masterpiece..
You are answering with fanaticism just like the Iphone funs. I didn't post to argue with you. If you want you can keep your eyes closed and simply get what they give to you. I like android more as the other OS and I like Samsung phones more as the other phones. I think all the people behind the scenes, in the community or even at Samsung, can do better.
If there are no themes you like, and no roms you like... Instead of "complaining" Why don't you take the time to learn how to theme and customize a rom then you can customize it the way you want? Devs do this for free, you honestly have NO right to complain. Do you pay them? Are they your employees? No.. So you have no right to complain.
If you do not like what the community has to offer you can
1. Leave the community
2. Learn how to do things yourself and stop depending on other people to do things for you especially if you do not like anything that's offered...

[Q] Not that noob question, more information about kernels and roms

Hi everyone, my questions here may seem strange or noobish, but I'll ask them anyways,
I follow these forums (XDA), since a good time now, (since I have my Xperia X1, got it nov 2008 to be exact, but I discovered XDA a little while later), and I read lots and lots of threads and posts everyday, I was there when CWM was born, I flashed tons of ROMs on my X1, WM6.1, WM6.5, Android since 2.1 I think, I had stopped all this for some times when I had much work to do for school and work etc. and I came back 3months ago with XPERIA P...
I followed and read almost every thread in here, and I'm sorry to announce that I find all this a bit Messy (not Lionel)...
I want the best Experience for my smartphone, and here I'll explain what's the "best" experience for me, and I wish you could tell me what's the best thing to do for it.
1) I love Xperia Stock UI, that's why I want stock XPERIAnce
2) I love smoothness, thats why I want a light ROM and good Kernel =)
3) I know that .54 FW is insanly buggy, so I'll certainly need some tweaks
so now that you've read my little story, I think I have all your attention so I can ask my questions, that's why I'll type them below:
1) What's the best ROM for me?
- I think about getting this one (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2069543) I want to know what you think about it, seems really good to me, but don't want to waste time flashing and reflashing, I used to do it with my old phone so now I just want to flash once and stay with My phone like it is all the time
2) What's the point of getting another than stock Kernel?
- I mean here that okay it can be smoother and have better battery or benchmarks, but tbh I don't really care of that all unless there's a big difference, so is it a real difference between stock kernel and Sliding or Thjap?
Yeah I know my question seem noobish and may have been asked many times, but I'm searching for someone who can make my wishes come true, or at least show me the way to do it by myself, because actually I learn computer science but all this is not what we learn at school, so I don't knwo where to start...
Now For all of you that didn't fall asleep while reading my story (could write a book lol it's so long) hit the thanks button (just to know if you reached the end of my post LOL, joke no need to do it)
Seriously for every person that reaches the end of my post, just feell free to help or teach me how to make my own ROMs, because yea there are tutorials and stuff, but it's always better to have someone showing you the first steps, it helps you keep focusing on it and not being bored,
I thank every guy here that can help me or just took the time to read my looong long post =)

1.) Only you can tell what's the best ROM for your phone. But for my Xperia P, I use BrainsROM. It has all the features I need for my smartphone. Battery does not drain that fast and overall performance is good.
2.) Hmmm. I am not that pro yet when it comes to kernels, but as I can see, there is a big difference using kernels from Sliding and Thjap from stock. You can see big improvements when it comes to overall performance. Most people use Stock ROM's combined with Modded Kernels.
Sorry for my bad english, english isn't my first language. :good: Hit the thanks button if my post helped you.
Your question regarding kernel
The kernels provided by thjap and deepunknown are more than just another stock kernel
pre rooted
Cwm integrated
Init.d support
Ooverclocked ( removed from deepunknown's kernel)
Some performance n battery tweaks
And a hell lot of new things
So Are there any cons over custom roms and kernels, like freeezes or reboots or phones stuck? Did you ever experience that ?

I have never experienced any reboots or freeZes on all custom roms that I have tried ( talking about those for unlocked bootloaders)
Most of the roms dun have any lag like our beloved stock rom
Regarding kernels - if its a test release... U cannot expect it to b highly stable...
Bt final releases are stable ( coz they r thoroughly tested by some testers including me
all credits to developers
Some have made it to 6 stable releases in xperia p section )
And you tell me that custom stable kernel is smoother and has better battery life than stock ? How come Sony engineers didn't make it better so ?

Yes it is bt I didnt said anything about battery yet
When I used miui it was superb
Bt battery life was not as much as I expected ( less than stock rom)
Sony engineers - no words for them
Coz they can port jb to xj bt not to xu and xsola... Thats pathetic engineering
