Hello,
I'd like to change the default sound for messaging and make it a different sound than the default notification sound. I thought there might be a way within the Verizon messaging but can't find it.
Also I can't figure out how to chance my default messaging app from Verizon to the standard one.

Found out how to switch messaging apps - settings, more... which lets me change the sound. I don't really care about how to do it in Verizon as I'll just keep the default messaging app instead of the Verizon one.

I want to replace the default SMS app with the one I downloaded [Handcent SMS] is this possible? the reason being is when I receive a text I get 2 notifications now 1 from the default and one from the one I installed
try to backup the orginal and remove it.
I'll give it a go, thanks
UPDATE: so far so good ^^
can you say what are the benefits of 'Handcent SMS'?
is it so much better then the stock SE sms thing?
Yeah, I have installed a qwerty keyboard, I want to use it landscape for better typing [accuracy] but the default SMS app doesn't rotate whereas Handcent SMS does

There is no need to remove the default sms/mms application.
Go to Definitions->Sony Ericsson (1st)->Messages (Last)->Disable Notifications
(Maybe names are a little different, but my menus aren't in English)

Much better looking and some customization. Pop-Up menu, alerts, message view, groups....
Disable sms notifications: settings > Sony Ericsson > Messaging > Uncheck 'notification'.
Handcent is too good )
I use handcent too. It offers a lot of options to customise the application and works well on my mini pro.
One thing I found out reading the x10 forum is you should not uninstall the stock sms application because handcent can't deal with mms on its own. Though perhaps this issue has been addressed in recent updates of handcent. I have not yet looked into it.
But definitively disable the stock notifications.

According to the latest news on the handcent homepage, it should've been resolved

Go SMS is themeable and has the light blue you are looking for.
Its from the market but its free.
If you're worried about double notifications, you can disable notifications in the stock sms app in the settings.
I know it's your first post and all, so welcome to the board. Next, go into the stock messaging app and wonder around settings for a while... looking for colors, themes, or any other setting. When you are done, go download Handcent from the market and disable notifications in the stock messaging like fpineda101 said. Feel free to look at the free themes in market for handcent or just change the colors, fonts, window style...
I tried googling but my google fu may be weak. I can't find any setting anywhere to turn off the graphical smiley faces in the Blur messaging app. Is my only choice to use a different messaging app? I'd rather not, because I prefer the stock Blur messaging app to Go (which was my favoured app on CM7). Is there any way of removing the smileys through some kind of secret settings file somewhere?
Seriously, they look ridiculous. I can't even tell what they are.

Agreed! Somebody definitely dropped the ball when they included those dumb looking smiles. I also would like to know a way to get the old graphical ones back. I'm using Handcent and they are the same so I doubt changing sms apps will do anything anyways.
Love using AOSP based roms such as AOSP+ and CM, is there anyway to change the default dialer to a third part app such as exDialer? I prefer the extra features of a different dialer app.
Unfortunately incoming calls are still routed through the system dialer, and if I disable the system dialer app then it simply shows I have a call but no dialer is active but have no way of taking the call.
I thought perhaps disabling the system dialer would cause make the rom ask which app I wish to use as the default dialer etc, but that didn't work.
I have an H930DS model V30+. Ideally I would like to be able to disable/uninstall the stock dialer/contacts applications which are ugly IMHO. There are lots of alternative dialer apps but they can't prevent the stock in-call screen from showing. Drupe is the best I can find as it uses an overlay to hide the stock app but it has limitations around handling the missed call notifications which can only be fully cleared by going into the stock app. Can anyone advise of a way to disable the stock dialer (I think I may have to use WTF method to unlock the phone to do this)? Aside from the ugly dialer, all other changes I would like to make to the phone are easily made by installing alternative apps so this is just the last thing I want to change for the phone to be close to perfect for me.
Have you tried changing in Default Apps the application responsible for Phone? That ought to work.

Yes, changing the default app doesn't override things like the in-call screen and other functions in all cases (it varies depending on the replacement app). Most dialer apps specifically mention that they cannot override some stock dialer-related functions in their FAQ section. An old version of the google dialer app is also a partial solution but some functions like 'nearby places' don't work.
The stock app is the one that the emergency call from lockscreen seems to activate no matter which other dialer has been installed. For obvious reasons accessing the dialer for emergency calls from the lockscreen would still need to work. I dont know if access to dialer from the LG lockscreen depends on the stock dialer still being installed
I finally decided to unlock my phone and root it. I was able to install the google framework with magisk then install the full version of google's dialer app from the playstore with all the features working rather than the patched versions that run on unrooted phones. Apart from the emergency dial from the lockscreen there is no sign of LG dialer or contacts anymore
