OK so it seems a lot of people are having issues with boot loops when they are messing around with things. First thing. Your phone is NOT bricked or broken.
It's just unable to start due to something missing or broken. Don't panic, there's no issue. I did this the day I got my phone, and there was nobody to "help" as such, so I just fixed it myself.
These are the steps to fix a boot loop. If you do this correctly, it WILL fix it. But you must do it EXACTLY to the letter.
So here we go...
1) Turn off your phone. Unplug it from your computer etc
2) Hold down home, power, and volume UP. This will enter recovery mode. If you are using CF-Root, you'll get CWM recovery. If not, you get stock recovery. It doesn't matter which appears.
3) Choose to wipe user data from the menu.
4) Turn off the phone by long-pressing the power button.
5) Prepare ODIN on your PC by using task manager to kill any KIES processes, then open ODIN.
6) Put your phone into download mode (home + power + volume down)
7) Plug your phone into the computer using the factory USB cable. The leftmost box should go yellow and an ID number will appear.
8) Flash a stock ROM from those available in ODIN format, and the phone will boot correctly.
Alternatively, it is possible to flash VillainROM 1.1 if you are not comfortable in wiping via recovery, or if you cannot do so for any reason (corrupted kernel etc), as it wipes all users data when installing. Simply ignore steps 2 to 4, and flash VillainROM 1.1 via ODIN instead of the stock ROM.
Any questions about boot loops? Ask them here rather than making new threads.

You're a great, I risked a heart attack!
noted with thx, I wish i had the correct instruction 3 days ago.
one more question, do we have to do one more step to flash the stock kernel after we flash the stock rom?
I plug the phone into the pc, but my drivers dont seem to be working it fails to be recognised. I tried with another Galaxy S II, and this phone does appear on the pc. Im thinking its because my phone isnt in download mode?
Any ideas?
Legend, thank god for this topic

You can also try just 1 2 3 & 4 and see if phone boots .
Its done just that for me as i try to clear a bootloop from a wipe to stock .

I had it myself and i was pretty happy that i uses the backup function from recoverymode cwm.
I would really really recommend that u use this BEFORE doing any critical changes to your phone.
I have a Boot loop after doing a full reset, It was installed with lightning rom
Now Odin doesnt recognize my phone, thats bacause i'm on other computer now (havnt installed the drivers jet)... i tried installing kies 2.0, didnt help... any suggestions?
Edit: is there no manually way to install you phone on you computer with manual drivers or something.... it's bacause odin still doesnt recognize my phone
EDIT2: I fixed my problem, for everyone that had same issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961956 => these drivers work
I have done all the instructions and flashed with a stock rom with odin but my phone still does the boot loop any suggestions?
Edit: fixed it with the villainrom, sorry for my post
thx!

I also got the boot loop. Here what i have been done:
1.flash villain rom.
2.want to change to lite'ning rom = boot loop
3.clear into factory data reset and flash stock rom = success
4.i still want to use lite'ning rom and flash it = boot loop
5.clear into factory data reset and flash lite'ning = boot loop
Is it somethin wrong with the villain rom or lite'ning rom?

If when connecting phone to your pc and your phone is ON then download the latest version of kies from samsung as this holds the drivers to connect to your computer properly.
If you are talking about when your phone is OFF and using ODIN then it should pick up your phone but you wont be able to flash until you are in download mode.
only other thing id add is try using a different usb port, one that is like a mainboard port not a hub.

Jep having same issues, not really an issue but i'm also stuck with the villain rom If i try to flash it with lighting rom i have boot loop
this all has started with a full factory reset, when I was on the lightning rom, the full factory reset caused my bootloop and ever sence the only rom that works on my phone is the villain rom
Exactly same happens to me
I have literom v1.0 I cant flash 1.1 or even flash stock rom without boot loops
Guys it seems there's an issue with some custom ROMs. VillainROM seems fine, as people can safely return to it.
If you cannot get a ROM to flash, then instead of flashing a custom ROM at the end of the process, ODIN a stock ROM after the wipe. That should fix the issue.
It appears some custom ROMs have a bug with wrong permissions, preventing the system from booting.

Yes, it appears lightning rom can't cope with a full wipe when it's running. VR is set up to work after the full wipe, provided you re-install it via ODIN

Yes, that won't work, as the ROMs are not compatible. You would need to get Lightning ROM to fix the issue
Last week I flashed LD3 for my Galaxy S2 i777. Today I was going to flash CM9. Every time I tried to boot into recovery it just started the phone.
I figured I could use mobile odin to flash a new kernel and it would fix it. Like an idiot I used a Gingerbread kernel on my phone running an ICS rom. So of course my phone froze on the "Galaxy S2" screen.
I couldn't boot into recovery and freaked out because I couldn't boot into dl either. I ordered a jig but kept fiddling in the meantime. I found that if I hook my phone to the USB, wait for the battery charging icon, take the battery out, then hold the down button it would boot into dl mode. Then I had to put the battery back in before I clicked continue or else it just reset.
Ok, so got into DL mode. I grabbed the stock rom and kernel from XDA site and flashed them with Odin. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432 (can't post links yet).
The phone starts and setup mode begins. It shows the android figure and says click it. Now all kinds of errors pop up telling me different google services weren't working and force close. When you click the android figure it goes to setup wizard screen but nothing happens (except more android service errors).
Can someone help me out here? I've been at it 5 hours and searched this forum high and low. My thought is there are some ICS elements left behind in there it is trying to load, but I could be way off.
I still can't boot into recovery mode, just DL.

Did you do a full wipe before flashing the stock rom and kernel?
I did not do a full wipe. How can I go about that without logging into recovery? I'm googling that now but if you have linkage I would appreciate it.

dont need to wipe when using Odin/Heimdall.
To OP:
there is only factory recovery, no CWM, you could always just flash a kernal from the DEV section, get CWM, flash CM9.
If I flash another kernel wouldn't I still have the same problem? I'll go ahead and give it a shot. Any you recommend for any reason or other?

So let me get the straight...you're on unrooted stock right now? If that's true, you should:
1. Do a factory reset from settings.
2. Use Odin to flash the Stock with Root package.
3. Use Mobile Odin to flash either Entropy's DD or Siyah.
4. Use CWM to flash what you want after that.

recovery is in kernal. If you flash a kernal from the DEV section you'll get CWM recovery, then you can flash your CM9 that you wanted, after a wipe data/factory reset.

Yes, but if he flashes said kernel with Odin, it'll trip his flash counter. I'm just telling him the safe way to do it, Mobile Odin.
I've already tripped my counter. I have a jig that will be here tomorrow so I can use it to reset the counter.
I can't use mobile odin because I can't log into my phone. I can only use desktop Odin.
All the files I am digging up look like .zip made for cwm. Could someone help guide me towards a kernel I can flash from desktop?

Either Entropy's DD or Siyah. You can open the zip and extract the zimage; the zimage is the kernel.
I just tried using Syiah:

I can't get past the setup screen.
And I still can't access recovery.

Flash the return to stock package from Odin again. Something must have gone wrong with it the first time.
well thats wierd. Sorry man but are you doing it right?
vol down and power. hold it untill the screen flashes twice.
I flashed stock 3 times now. I couldn't get into recovery before this (manually or with rom manager) and still can't. It starts like its going into recovery then just resets and loads normally.
Down is for dl mode, up is recovery.
I think the lack of ability to boot into recovery and the android service errors may be related.

Forget recovery. You shouldn't be worrying about recovery until after you get your phone booting.
New thought: maybe your download of the stock package is corrupted. Try to download it on your computer again. Download the one with root. If that fixes it, you can go use Mobile Odin to flash the Siyah kernel.
To get into recovery hold down both volume up, volume down, and power button and don't let go until recovery comes up.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA
I have been using the rooted. The fully stock won't dl. This started because I flashed a gb kernel instead of ics. Maybe I should try flashing an ics kernel instead of stock gb?
Hi,
I am aware of the threads suggesting how to fix the phone stuck at the Samsung Boot Logo. Do factory reset is one option, but this would erase all the personal data in the phone including the photos.
I was able to get into the recovery mode and download mode of the phone. I tried wipe cache partition option in the recovery mode but still no joy. (I couldn't find the option for Wipe dalvik cache though)
I was able to detect the phone in recovery mode via ADB using USB cable. But I was struggling to get ADB to connect with the phone using the command prompt. So I was unable to recover the data/photos in the phone before going down the route of factory reset it.
I saw a few software on the internet claiming they are able retrieve photos/data from soft bricked phone. Can anyone confirm/suggest whether these claims are true? (e.g. REMO Recover for android and Yodot Recover)
thanks in advance.
cheers.

Have you tried mounting your phones storage (also known as USB storage) in the mounts and storage menu (CWM recovery)? (Assuming you have custom recovery) Works everytime with my phone and no adb drivers required! If you haven't install custom recovery, you can google philz recovery and flash it via ODIN. Then you should be able to mount your phone's storage and retrieve and important photos and etc. Factory reset won't delete any photos and videos. It will delete ALL apps and related data and settings, but not important pictures and etc. But try what I suggested first before attempting factory reset.
Oh... I wish I can use CWM recovery. However, this S2 phone has not been rooted. So it is on original firmware. Can I still root it then install CWM recovery without losing media data?
Also, I thought factory reset will clear the phone to factory status, i.e. no photos and any media file? (more precisely, I think there is no option to just do factory reset without wiping data)
I remember that's what happened to my S4 before when testing root/roms (https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Samsung+Galaxy+S4+-+Wipe+Data+-+Factory+Reset/23217)

yes, you can still root your phone and won't lose your data. If you are on stock jb 4.1.2, you can install siyah kernel 6.0b5 on your phone via ODIN (that means you need to download the tar file one here: http://d-h.st/frK). Your phone should be rooted and have CWM recovery after that. If you have 4.0.4 stock ics, you can install siyah 5.0.1 onto your phone (download link: http://d-h.st/Bcf) via ODIN.
In odin, select the tar file under PDA then click start. Your phone should reboot automatically once done
Nice one!!
I successfully flash siyah 5.0.1 onto the phone and managed to get back the media files I wanted to backup using USB mass storage function in Recovery mode.
But then I got another question. I guess it is because the stock ROM installed version does not play nicely with the kernel. (As I cannot remember which android version it has before I flash Siyah kernel onto it). It just won't boot up. It went passed the Samsung boot screen (with yellow triangle), then the Siyah logo flashed a few times, then the screen went black out, the phone was super hot and I have to take the battery out to turn it off.
I haven't tried to factory reset in Siyah's recovery mode yet, but before I do it, I suspect that it won't work, as I assume the android ROM version will still be the same even if I factory reset it. Should I go get another ROM to flash instead? if so, which one is recommended (I'd love to go to lollipop if that's available.)
As I never played with custom kernel/recovery, can someone point me to the right direction? Should I flash another more up-to-date kernel before I try to flash a lollipop ROM onto it? (I believe Siyaho 5.0.1 is only good for ICS?)
Newbie here. I have been reading thru different threads

wanted to retrieve all the photos/videos saved from internal storage
don't care if phone will get fix or not (since I already have a new one)
But I need all the photos, & if possible contacts and other data saved there.
PLEASE I NEED HELP
I went to the service center and asked if they can help me atleast access CWM recovery
to use USB MOUNT on device but all they've told me over and over is
"we will wipe your phone to fix it"
"not possible to recover anything,we'll just reformat your phone to fix it"

Did you read this bit:
What kernel to choose:
The important part is the Kernel code:
XWLPX-NEE
Kernel code is in red (LPX), for this example, you need an LPX ROM. However, often, you can mix kernels when they are close: LPF kernel with LPG ROM...
NEE code doesn't matter at all, I add it for reference. It is the CSC
XW: mixed, often doesn't matter for close regions. For example, XW and XX are often interchangeable. However, mixing a BU with an XW ROM or inversly, sometimes works, but often ends in a bootloop. In that case, either boot into recovery or download mode to reflash

The last three letters before the region code is important. Choose the one that is closest to yours (look at the build number in the about device menu).
As for the first question, it's all up to you. Flashing siyah kernel or CWM will both give you a recovery, so either one will allow you to access your phone storage in the mounts menu. Remember that Android version is important as you can't flash a jellybean kernel on ics and vice versa.
gsstudios
Edit: Also, NEVER extract kernel zips or tar files. They are ready to be flashed. There should be a few folders and other files in it that makes up the kernel image.

I guess it will be hard for me to do that since I can't really check what kernel I had before
I've absolutely no access to my device nor open "ABOUT DEVICE" menu.
Tried to see if a clue might be at the back of my phone but alas, nothing there.
All i know for sure is my device was on ICS. will try my luck on ICS compatible CWM or Siyah. thanks again!

i managed to get into download mode and flashed TWRP recovery, when ever i try to flash a rom the phone restart again and enter bootloop and it's never shutdown!!
tried :
1- wipe everything
2- flash more than one stock firmware
3- flash recovery and succeeded BUT it's keep restarting !
4- flash custom ROM BUT no luck, keep restart at installing !
5- flashed custom kernel and it WORKED :good:

This is a soft boot due to the fact you still have the ability to access recovery and such what i would suggest you do is get factory files and restore phone back to stock and start over this should fix your problem. If you look around XDA you will find the files you will need ODIN being the main tool you will use to flash your phone.

You have flashed a stock firmware with stock bootloader etc. using odin and still stuck in a soft brick ? remember to wipe the phone a rule of thumb i use is to wipe the phone 3 times before i flash and 3 times after i flash. during the first boot up it may take a little time to boot as it must rebuild the cache. I dont think it is a motherboard issue i think you may have just flashed a wrong file that needs to be wiped out before continuing on. i have had this problem in the past with a galaxy s2 when i was developing custom roms for it. it took me a couple of wipes and factory firmware reflashes but i eventually got the phone back in working order. look here for the factory files you will need to re flash your phone with odin ----> https://samsung-firmware.org/model/SM-G925I/ also make sure you are using the latest version of ODIN you will to put your phone in download mode instead of recovery
Hi, could you fix it ?? I am facing the same issue.
I'm stuck on a bugged version of Pie... ZRJ8 build. None of the firmware science builds will upgrade to the newer builds. I have no idea how to downgrade back to BRJ6/BRJ5... please can someone help me I've tried SmartSwitch, it doesn't even show my phone in the emergency software menu.
My phone works, but I'm stuck in limbo with a half-baked Pie. How can I directly use odin to flash to the latest (G965USQU3CRKK)? I have update.zip, but I can't use this with odin...

Very easy, buddy! Just download BRJ5 for Odin, enter download mode after installing Samsung drivers on your pc and putting the phone in developer mode with ADB...extract BRJ5 and put the BL, AP AND CP in the correct spots...use CSC HOME IF YOU WANNA SAVE DATA. USE CSC if you want to wipe data, which I recommended.
THEN, once the phone is flashed and re-set up, flash the CRKK update.zip.
Should be good to go.
More help with Odin here, follow the Snapdragon S9+ instructions - https://www.xda-developers.com/install-one-ui-beta-samsung-galaxy-s9-galaxy-s9-plus/
CRKK is the latest so use that for the update.zip steps.

When I flashed BRJ5, my phone is stuck in a boot loop. It gets to "Starting Android - Optimizing app 82 of 82" and then reboots and tries again, over and over.. never gets past optimizing apps.
EDIT: Nevermind, doing a factory reset fixed the problem!! Now I am on BRJ5 Hopefully CRKK is not as buggy! Thanks a ton

All you gotta do is restart phone and hold POWER, VOLUME UP AND BIXBY BUTTON...When it powers on, release POWER....you'll be in recovery. Just wipe data three times and cache. It'll boot. I had the same thing.

At first it wasnt getting into recovery... But eventually it did. Factory reset fixed it. God I forgot how ugly 8.0 was!! Do you know if CRKK is the latest version?

Yep. It is. I agree! Pie looks way better! Now you can flash CRKK in recovery. Enjoy!
