How do I install CM11 on MJ9 firmware? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hello all. New to the Verizon note 2 but not the forums. I have a Note 2 that I used odin to get up to MJ9 from the 4.1.2 firmware. I have safestrap installed but when I go to install CM11 it just hangs on the boot animation. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

You have to wipe system, data and cache before flashing (installing) CM 11. Also make sure you have the correct CM 11 because its different for each carrier. I personally have the US Cellular Note 2, it will let me install Verizon things because the physical device is the same but things like calling and data doesn't work or it might boot loop or get stuck like yours is doing. I know I got confused when I first started flashing things to my phone by trying to flash the international model files and they wouldn't work.

Thanks for the quick response!
I got the one for the i605. I actually have AT&T and would like to use AT&T service on this note 2. I just wasn't getting service where I live for some weird reason unless I use an ATT phone. I created a second slot did a complete wipe and install, then restart and now it's just black. I can reboot and get into recovery though.

You cannot use the Verizon Note 2 on AT&T because the Verizon is CDMA network and AT&T is GSM. There is a hardware difference.

I would at least like to have cyanogenmod on it then. Its still just black screened.

Are you flashing a nightly build or a milestone?

I can't get recent nightly builds to boot at all on my Note 2, the Milestone (very few bugs) will boot though.

M8 is the newest one. Be sure to get GAPPS too so you can get to the App Store.

Is your bootloader unlocked? If not, then as I understand things with SafeStrap, you have to use a Samsung-based ROM as you can only change the ROM and not the kernel. Trying to install CM11 will not install the CM-based kernel, so it won't boot. If your bootloader is unlocked, you shouldn't be using SafeStrap as it's only a workaround for those of us who can't unlock our bootloaders.

How do you unlock bootloader? D:

If you're on MJ9 or anything newer, you can't... Verizon locked the bootloader down so tight that nobody has been able to unlock it, and from what everyone has been saying around here, it may never happen. This is exactly why this will be my first and last Verizon phone... every other carrier's version is unlockable, but Verizon feels the need to dictate what we can and can't do with the devices we paid for... unacceptable.

Since I'm on US Cellular and they don't lock the boot loader I didn't know about that. Sorry. I don't understand the whole reason for locking it in the first place. Plus with the law changing they should allow it to be done.

Maybe I can find a gsm note 2 board lol. I built this note 2 from like 5 bad ones but should have thought about the Verizon being a doucher thing lol

I'm not entirely sure what safestrap entails. What I do know is the Verizon note 2 is a world phone and you should be able to use at&t on it. I'm currently running beans rom and I'm on straight talk with it. I am unlocked though. But the Verizon note 2 does support gsm bands (not the lte bands though)

Unfortunately that law has to do with unlocking the phone for use on other carriers, not unlocking the bootloader to allow the installation of custom ROMs and kernels.

Safestrap is a workaround that allows the use of a custom bootloader, but it's somehow running alongside the existing one without actually replacing it (or something like that... I'm not a developer, so I'm hazy on the details), so it is very limited in what it can do. Since the kernel can't be changed, it will only work with specific ROMs that use the stock Samsung kernel, and even then not all of those ROMs are guaranteed to work. I also don't know if it can be used with Android 4.4 KitKat as I have not tried... there may be some information on that in the Safestrap thread.

I swapped to an ATT board lol thank you guys. I'm an ATT customer anyways but could only find the Verizon board at the time. I got dn3 on it now (So amazing!) Thanks for the help guys. I hope soon someone cracks open the Verizon bootloaders!! It's your device! You pay on it every month! Well really just for their service... The device is yours.

Not correct Verizon 4g LTE phones use sim cards and are world phones so they have both a CDMA and a gsm radio I've used mine on straight take with att service you won't get 4g data speeds only h+ just have to put in the new dim and correct apns
And as far as the op's questions as one response stated if ur boot loader is locked safestrap is only compatible with 4.3 touchwiz based Roms and ROM slots don't work either you u have to flash over stock ROM slot

I Googled it and you are correct. Though the us cellular model has a Sim card it is only for data.

Oh boy. That forum is very clearly marked for the GT-N7100 (international variant), not the SCH-i605 (Verizon variant). What you've done here is flash the radio software for a GSM/UMTS phone..... ours has those for international use but primarily uses CDMA/LTE. Guess what isn't present in the GT-N7100 phone? Yup. Flashing anything from there is bad, bad news. Don't do it. .....again, that is.
I'm a convert from HTC as well. The two phone brands apply things differently. Take the time to read up on how to do the various tasks of unlocking/rooting/flashing and so on before you try new things. This is too nice a phone to ruin!
Check out Droidstyle's excellent guide. It'll walk you through fixing this problem (restoring via ODIN, as recommended by the other posters) among many other things.

We can't do custom roms without a custom recovery (cmw or twrp). I don't think custom recoveries are available yet. Unless you know something I don't (and that's very possible since I don't know much - lol).

Do you have a metro pcs mega? And if so, did you odin flash twrp on your phone?
I want to be sure before I try because I bricked my metro pcs mega the day I bought it and never got it back working. I had to go back to MetroPCS and get another one. I do not plan on bricking the one I have now. I don't want to take a chance until I know I can recover it from a soft brick.
Without having a firmware that can be flashed in odin, I'm scared to try anything.

Yes I have the Mega from Metro Pcs. That's why posted the link to the other thread.
Yeah, I rooted and and installed the recovery than was like hmm probably shouldn't have done that with out there being a firmware release but oh well. I'm wild that way.
I instilled it through Odin. the only file from that link I used was this one.. http://goo.gl/J5JAH0
Tested Working 100%
I downloaded the attached file, put phone into download mode and flashed the recovery via odin 307. I fully booted the phone and then shut it off to reboot into recovery which is now replaced with TWRP.
Now to see if I can find a lighter ROM something like extremesperia. I haven't seen any multi-carrier roms for this phone so I am not sure what will work.
I also used the backup feature and was able to backup the entire phone.

I wouldn't go that far tbh...I'd be somewhat cautious as at least on my note 2...there are several variants and all have the same hardware, but run into issues flashing roms incompatible to your specific device. It's kinda guess and check as I've seen i9200 which is the 3g mega intl have a few minor apk issues vs i9205 lte on my rom alone, much less larger issues like framework and data structures or kernel variances between intl and carrier based. Just heads up from someone who builds for several different devices and hardware configs. When it comes to carriers sometimes it's hard telling what the hell they're doing lol.
One thing major is for carrier based devices of any kind, the biggest thing is the modem...If you flash an intl you may lose the carrier frequency.

Can I flash a Tmobile ROM on verizon

Can i flash any tmobile ROM? like this one : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2682608
I recently flashed a MIUI ROM from our verizon thread and noticed it worked decently with either a tmobile sim or our own Verizon LTE.
I also recently flashed this T-mobile ROM :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292054
which was posted on the T-mobile thread but had our verizon kernal in the list of downloads, with success.
So my question is this: can i flash any Tmobile ROM as long as it doesn't include a kernal and radio and of course access the network settings to change it to LTE/CDMA.???

Probably not. Most ROMs are tightly integrated with their kernel; if you flash just the ROM and not the kernel, lots of things will likely not work well.
I think you should make a little list of the ones you have success with though... [emoji1]

Yeah, if you're one of the lucky few with the MDK bootloader or a developer edition phone.
But you still probably need to flash the entire ROM, including the kernel that supports it, assuming you're one of the lucky ones.

[Q] Wifi-calling using AT&T S5 with TM custom rom?

Hey now!
I just rooted/flashed my AT&T Galaxy S5 with AllianceRom - Build 3 to use with T-mobile.
I would like to know if I can get wifi-calling and VoLTE to work with my phone with this ROM or would I need to download the stock Tmobile ROM in order for it to work?
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!
Your post would fit better in your custom ROM thread, where 99% of the readers will be using the same ROM. Here, only a minority of people will have any specific experience with that ROM.
Does your custom ROM include wifi calling? Are people reporting wifi call success or failures in the custom ROM thread?
Has your custom ROM been updated to include the recent VoLTE update e.g. the equivalent of G900TUVU1BNF6? If so, you should be fine. You have a locked bootloader, but AFAIK that shouldn't interfere with wifi calling. You just need the features configured in the ROM.
Given your locked bootloader, you should do your research before you flash firmware from another carrier. Trying to flash a TMB bootloader, kernel or possibly even stock TMB recovery may put your bootloader in a position of having to choose between incrementing Knox or bricking your phone for you. And we're assuming that you wouldn't want that.

VoLTE is modem specific. If you don't have the T-Mobile modem, you won't have VoLTE (so unless you want a brick, do NOT flash the T-Mobile radio to your ATT device. You will NEVER have VoLTE) I didn't have VoLTE until i flashed the NF6 (first update to include VoLTE) modem. Even with a T-Mobile device. Once i flashed the full tar that included the modem to NF6, i got VoLTE. So you will never have that.
As far as WiFi calling, as long as its present in the frameworks and ROM, last i understood, it should work. I know when i had my S4 people flashed a T-Mobile ROM to their ATT S4 and had WiFi calling. So long as you have a T-Mobile SIM as well. Ensure the ROM supports it as fffft stated.

If root is broken on your phone, then redo your root. It certainly isn't broken for all ATT phones. Nor is the Alliance ROM likely to be broken for ATT phones i.e. 900A either. And of course you can use towel root. It's a good habit to do a forum search before posting.. then you'd be able to pose better informed questions.
To use towel root, you simply have to use a pre June 3rd stock ROM as a base. If necessary, use Odin to write a pre June 3rd 4.4.2 ATT firmware to your phone.

I used towel root in the first place to get my phone to install roms. I've no problems with root with AT&T roms.
Forgot to mention but the Alliance rom that I tried to install was made for t-mobile so I can use wifi-calling/ISIS. That might be the reason why root doesn't work?
If anyone is able to install tmobile specific rom on their AT&T s5, please help me out.

If anyone is able to install tmobile specific rom on their AT&T s5, please help me out.
Thanks!

Im on att s5 on tmobile alliance. all u need to do is rerun towel root and download busybox again. Once i did that everything worked correctly with root apps like titanium backup. Also good to know about the modem so that means we r f'd with volte unless the very unlikely att/verizon bootloader is unlocked.

Thanks!

I had the ATT gs4 using it with Tmobile and had the same issue and never solved it. Im not saying it cant be done but I was told I might be better off just trading my s4 for the tmobile version .. Ended up just buying a Tmobile s5 .. Also my bootloader was locked on my ATT s4 and that was reason enough to dump ATT . No kernels = No att for me
If you find a solution for wifi calling let me know. I do have a buddy with att s5 asking me about it

I too am trying to figure this out. Also trying to find backups of any useful stock T-Mobile apps I don't have because of this being an AT&T S5...

I posted the solution in another thread. Basically, with a combination of the OA1 ATT firmware, safestrap and Alliance Rom, you can achieve Volte and Wifi calling with a tmobile sim card on a G900A.
edit:
- added link
- be careful not to take the OC4 update from ATT, or it will not work.

How can I make sure I'm not on the OC4 update? I am new to messing with anything AT&T...
Thank you so much! I'm going to give it a try soon.

You can go to About Device in the settings, and look at the last three characters of the Base version field. If you see NCE, ND3, NG3 or OA1 you're fine.
It seems that I can try to follow the instructions on this thread but not sure what ATT firmware I should be installing since new updates have been released since OA1. Can someone tell me if I should install entire Tmobile ROM including modem with Odin?

Guys, I have some great news. Both wifi calling AND VoLTE now work on my SM-G900A on the T-mobile network. Here is what I did:
I installed the latest ATT firmware (OA1), released earlier this February. OTA update did not work, so I had to flash the original firmware (ANCE) via Odin, and then flash the two subsequent updates using update.zip on the SD Card. This will remove safestrap and root, but fear not.
Once my phone had AO1 installed, I used this tutorial to root the phone again. It invonves temporarily flashing an earlier (ND3) kernel, using TowelRoot, and then reflashing the OA1 kernel
With my OA1 rooted, I installed safestrap. Make sure you install busybox first.
With safestrap, I installed the T-mobile Alliance Rom (build B4).
Seconds after booting, both Wifi Calling and Voice over LTE work!
Enjoy!
Guillaume

OK this is very very simple. No need to unlock sim. Download a rom from whatever service provider ie... att tmobile. The only thing you need is for it to have an aroma installer format your memory put your new Sim card in flash then go and download new recovery for the phone ie.. 900t as your recovery is 900p after then find a stock rom flash new recovery then your new stock rom and poof profit 4g. New phone. Fckn magic and I am a novice who messed with everything everyone else said with no luck best was hspa. But it would always jump towers roam no signal blah blah. Now I feel like I have a new tmobile phone 28mbs download .is the lowest I have pulled.

Have you tried it. Then dont post on my thread what am I spamming a work around that will help ppl. Your sad my friend
so, where is your work, i have note 3 sprint and i want activate 4g in europe
OK so first off...Wow try to help ppl out. You guys r a bunch off asshats, I believe I explained in the first post how to do it. And the last guy that made a post did I say Europe international unluck. My obvious answer would be just follow the one of the other post because unless your staying their I don't even know what carriers they have. But to domestically turn your sprint phone into lets say att or tmobile ir verizon. All notes have same hardware inside the only different is the locked bands you can't use. So I am going to try and make this simple as I can.
1... ROOT
2.... INSTALL CUSTOM RECOVERY
3.... DOWNLOAD A ROM WITH AN AROMA INSTALL AS THIS WILL LET IT BYPASS THE CHECK FOR THE CORRECT PHONE BECAUSE AS OF THIS POINT YOUR CUSTOM RECOVERY IS SUPPOSE TO ONLY FLASH 900P ROMS.. THE AROMA BYPASSES THIS.
4........INSTALL THE ATT...TMOBILE... ROM IT PROBABLY WON'T BE STOCK BUT ONE
5...... REBOOT.
6.....Now YOUR PHONE Is T-mobile or att.
Nit finished though
7..... Download a CUSTOM recovery for the company you switched. to I.e....twrp 2.8.7. 900t
8..... Now you can stop or what I did just to make sure things went smooth when completing the switch I installed a stock rom called the company bam
NO SIM CARD ERRORS AND FULL 4G
AS YOU ARE USING THEIR SETUP UNBLOCKED THEIR BANDS THE ONLY WAY TO TELL THIS WAS NOT THAT COMPANY PHONE IS THE IMEI STARTING wITH 99 and the frame under the battery Haz it mark.
FLASH WHATEVER ROM YOU LIKE AFTER THAT .
PLEASE STOP ACTING AS THOUGH I DID SOMETHING WRONG TRY, RECORD IT I JOHN BEIL WILL BUY YOU A NEW PHONE IF IT DOESN'T WORK. BUT WHEN YOU FIND THAT I FOUND THE EASY WORKAROUND SECRET DONATE THANK AND SHARE TOY STORY PLEASE & THANK YOU

Ok, re read again your instructions.
Flashed the stockish lollipop T-Mobile rom.
I am all ready Sim unlocked, so can't address the sim unlock.
It seems the T-Mobile rom shows the 4G icon when connected as UMTS.
Speed test shows the same 2.5 megs. I get all ready, on any other Rom.
My Verizon phone with the same Sim gets 4 times the speed on LTE.
Thanks for working on this!

First off, thank you for this thread! I have two questions. What about getting it to work with Straight Talk? Also, what 5.0 ROM did you use that had the Aroma installer.
Just pick onone you like they will tell you if he use aroma on the first page. And yes it will work for straight talk

Yes but the only one I can find is 4.4.2 and I am on 5.0. Is it okay to downgrade to kitkat? Didn't know if it might brick it or not. Just flashed a Tmobile ROM N900TUVUFOB6-frequentc, ROM for the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3 frequentc but it didn't have AROMA installer.

Just don't mess with the bootloader and you'll be fine

Yeah so I've been flashing ROMS for quite some time. In fact I use multiboot on my Nexus 6 but anyway. I have 2 Note 3s and just bricked one of them when I flashed the wrong recovery in Flashify. I am going to try and restore it with ODIN and I hope it works. I flashed Darklord's Note 5 port which was absolutely stunning till I killed the phone with the wrong TWRP recovery. The phone had the SIM not valid in another language so I'm guessing flashing the right recovery would have made it work for T-mobile. Anyway, this will be my first brick after all of these years. My other Note is booting now and I hope the T-mobile and Straight Talk sims work. If per chance it does, I can then flash the Darklords ROM and still have service? I ask because you said you can go ahead and flash any ROM you like. Edit: I am having a hard time getting this to work. Is there any way you could just tell me what particular ROM you used because now I tried the Kitkat ROM and it will not boot. Please help. Thanks!
Ok follow the directions next time I don't know if you can Odin because of adb, but Samsung has an app, don't use flashify for this use twrp don't download a T-Mobile recovery till after u flash the aroma ROM then flash T-Mobile recovery then any T-Mobile rom

I completely understand that but can you please link me to the ROM you used or any Lollipop ROM that works? I ask because I cannot find ONE with Aroma installer for T-mobile that is 5.0. The kit kat ROM I just installed is stuck on the Samsung boot animation and won't boot.
