i recently bought a CP900 printer which supports wifi printing in adhoc mode, but the problem is, my xperia z ultra cannot detect the adhoc networks, ive tried samsung phones, iphones, all can detect this network but mine.
i have tried to flash AOKP, and CM11 roms which still does not detect adhoc networks
is there a solution to this problem?
update, i have also tried some 3rd party wifi detecting software in the market, the network shows up, but when i try to connect it says adhoc not supported by android platform.

Have you tried using the WiFi Direct feature in stock ROM? From what I have read only one of the devices needs it to establish a connection.

Thanks for your quick reply, i will be using this direct outside of an wifi environment, your suggestion is great as i could possibly have a person open up their wifi teathering and use that as a bridge with both my printer and my cellphone connected to it, as my cellphone can work in this mode. although its not the perfect solution, its better than not usable one. thanks for enlightening suggestion.

I was suggesting trying to use the wifi direct function of phone to see if it will detect printer if infrastructure mode is used. I don't really have any knowledge regarding networking, just Googling stuff while I had a few minutes to spare.

the wifi direct does not work with the printer. the infrastructure mode, is just like any other printer when you connect to your home wifi, you can use the printer. my objective is to connect wireless on the location where a direct connection would be desirable.

I have one of these http://www.google.com/shopping/prod...a=X&ei=sbrXU_HYMoidyATcloHwDg&ved=0CDQQ8wIwBg at home, and wonder if it could be used to connect two devices. If so it would allow me to use my chromecast at hotels. Needing a second gadget is a crappy solution but it may work.

Here's my problem. I can use the Wifi Hotspot and the Wireless Tether for Root at home or any other place I go except while I am at work. I have tried several different devices and they all will connect to my Thunderbolt unless I am in the building at work.
I have tried changing the channel to each channel available. I have also tried both secure and unsecured connections. I have also tried setting up a static IP on the device I am trying to connect.
The only way right now that I can tether is if I use PDAnet and I hate using this application. I would rather use my wifi hotspot to connect.
Anyone have any ideas how I can fix this?
Mine works anywhere. I'm actually using the mobile wifi to dl a movie and browse xda with no issues and I'm in a brick building with few windows. Anything special on your phone (root, rom, kernel)
are u trying to connect the same device at work that u connect everywhere else?

Yes I am. I have tried 3 different devices all of which work while I am at home and not at work.
I can use PDAnet to tether with and I hate doing it this way. I would rather use wireless tether to connect with.
Is there a way a company can either jam a wireless connection or prevent one from working that isn't their property? This is the only answer I can think of. We have several wireless access points in the building. Seems like there's on about every 50 feet or so and we have a very large building.
I had the same problem with the Droid Incredible but I was able to use an older version of Wireless Tether to get around this problem. It was version 1.06, but it doesn't fix my issue on the TB.

In networking, "ad hoc" is used to describe a (temporary) network between two equal devices. That is without any centralised access point or anything like that.

It's true that untill GB (if I recall correctly) Android doesn't support this type of connection, but it doesn't matter since Connectify creates a regular network (i.e. turns your computer or laptop to a wireless router) istead of creating ad-hoc network, therefore, you should use Connectify

Its quite simple.
there's two ways to do this.
1. Install PDAnet software from the android market in your phone and install the same in your PC. connect the USB cable from your phone to the PC and enable USB tether in PDAnet software. You will have a PDAnet icon in the systems tray in the your PC, right click on it and click on connect. You will be connected to the internet. that's it.
2. This is quite simple compared to other one. install Barnacle USB tether. Keep in mind that this software will work only if your phone's rooted. Install this software from android market. what this software does is that it will make your phone a portable hotspot, it becomes a wireless Router. you can give it a name to your network also enable encryption. turn the wireless on in your PC, scan and connect, you are good to go. you are on internet.
I use the second method, its very easy and simple.

is there a way to do it wirelessly?
im really battling hear...phone cant find IP host address ((
I tried PDANet with USB but cannot because alarm " Connect fail" ?
First off, my laptop works fine with my phone's ad-hoc tether, but i want to use internet on my psp and vita later down the road as well when i need it, but i can't find any way to tether my X10 other than in ad-hoc mode, which is not supported by most consoles/handhelds.
i found a few guides but it wouldn't work. Would either not broadcast anything or do ad-hoc mode with various apps.
Any way to tether X10 in infrastructure mode instead of ad-hoc?
Ok, so i tried everything and only phone's native tether (under settings, stock ROM latest updates) gives infrastructure, or at least what seems like it, problem arises when i want to access internet and get DNS server error... there are pretty much no settings to mess with there so i am at a loss really. USB tether gives no internet to my laptop either over the native tether under settings.
wireless tether for root users does however work perfectly, but only in ad-hoc mode. The beta version people use on different phones (change device profile select one of the master methods and go) to get infrastructure instead of ad-hoc doesn't work at all, i haven't tried all profiles but on few i tried even though app says tether is on no devices see it, SSID broadcast set to ON.
So any ideas? Could it be provider nonsense? i bought it second hand and it seems to have been unlocked from Orange, but ROM doesn't seem to have all the bloatware from Orange(just news and traffic pretty much) without that I wouldn't even have noticed that it is from Orange.
Would flashing a different ROM help? could it be Orange's ROM is blocking it? Otherwise i might need a new phone

I want to tether my ps vita and my laptop to my SE xperia X10. i use tether app on my phone to share phone's internet with my console and laptop when i am not home.
also on my laptop i got intel's my wifi app that allows me to rebeam/share internet which is sufficient for my need on my laptop, though thanks for the tip
problem is making my phone tether in infrastructure and not ad-hoc mode. i gone in as much depth as i can about it in the last post, though if you need any more info i'd be glad to provide it if it would help to find a solution...
It is just a stock Xperia X10 with all official updates and rooted... 2.3.3android 2,1,71baseband.
would using a different rom help?

[ROM] Wolfs TW Gingerbread | Feel the difference | V7b6 [stable] | 03/12/2011
^ This rom supports infrastructure mode tethering.
I am in the same boat as you friend but I want a different custom rom. I have upgraded my touchpad to ICS which has no support for ad-hoc networks.
I was using the stock rom above for awhile which supported infrastructure mode which was working perfectly but in my world I want to stick with Miui on my x10.
I updated the wifi teather app on the miui rom to the newest one and was playing with the different setting for different devices. I was able to get the tether app to start in master mode with some of the settings for other devices but I was never able to get the touchpad to fully connect to one of these networks. I had it connect briefly when I put a static ip matching the settings on the wifi tether app but it would not make any internet connection.
If we have the ability in a stock rom, why can't it be ported?
I have an HTC Legend that I don't use anymore, an SGS+ and an Acer A501. All three are rooted and have CM9. I don't get wireless in a certain part of the house, and I was wondering if I could transform the Legend in a wireless repeater of sorts. Now, I think that's really possible just by connecting via wireless to the main network and then just running as a wireless hotspot, but I can't really place it somewhere decent enough to repeat my signal (it's complicated).
So, trying to get my tablet's wifi to connect to the computer's LAN via the HTC cell phone, I tried all last night with all sorts of variations, ending up with an app called Reverse Tether, which connects to the computer's internet via USB, and another called Foxfi / PDANet Tablet, which communicates (poorly) via bluetooth. The problem seems to be that most wireless tethers expect 3g/4g to be connected and don't work with anything else.
Now, is there a solution to my little conundrum? Am I doing something horribly wrong or is there no "app for that"?
Thanks!
I posted the exact same question a few days ago and have gotten an interesting response. Start looking for a bridge connection app!

I need to do the same thing i do with connectify but in my phone, i connect to the web with my wifi and share internet with the same wifi adapter.
i been looking into it for a while and people keep on say that i need 2 widi adapter for it but is SO no true coz i have and use only 1... I don't wanna use bluetooth at all or connect it with usb.
If anybody knows of an app that does this magic please let me know.
Thanks.

Thanks for the reply.
I havent find a tethering app that let me share my wifi connection over the same wifi adapter.
I am not looking to share my data plan by the way, Connectify work as a wifi repeater, so you log in to a wifi and the software let you share that same connection any way you like even simultaneously over the same wifi adapter.
I'm sure you have good reasoning, but why don't you connect the other device directly to the same wifi your phone is connecting to? are you trying to use your phone as a range extender?
If that is all you are doing, seems to me to be a waste of a good device.
You could go to dd-wrt.com, find the list of supported routers, then buy a cheap router that is supported and then flash that firmware. Then set up as needed.
I have been using that for years, except in wireless bridge mode.

I know this thread is super old...
one reason i have is open routers that need a login after connection. I have yet to get a repeater to work with one of these networks but connectify works as you connect your computer say yes i accept and then start sharing it.

You mentioned that the WIFI Repeaters donot work with Open Networks. Are you talking about "Wireless Repeaters and Range Extenders"? such as this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SQvaGEKOxc
fqrouter2 is the solution
Use fqrouter2 for rooted Android devices and you have a perfectly working WiFi Repeater (available free in Google Play Store)

Hello npg500, I installed the app you suggested but i am not satisfoed with it.
fqrouter doesnot "externds the range" of the WIFI. it just routes the internet connection though the Android phone it runs on (possibly by the MITM), keeping the routed device on the same network as it was before. i installed fqrouter to increase the signal strength from my Basement wifi. but no success. it shows my PC in the Scan area. but as mentioned it doesn't extends the Range.
Anynody having any idea what App can serve that functionality? Or Am I doing something wrong somewhere?
Anyone can suggest how to work this wifi repeater or extender mode on S5?
fqrouter is saying wifi is not supported on S5 but it does have MITM

You can simply view the password from your phone and input it in your laptop. Or, except you are experimenting something.
Am I missing out something?
