Would it be possible to install an i9000 Rom and make an installable zip that has all necessary vibrant files instead of having to port the Rom on a pc?

Sadly we have very little developers on board. Also, it is better to flash the proper ported ROM from the start because if not, file permission failure may happen among other issues such as Force Closes. I gave you the link on how to do it in another thread. It may seem complicated at first but it is not complicated if you, for example, by using 7Zip (or similar) on your PC take the required files from, say, sada's CyanogenMod ROM by opening its zip file with 7Zip and drag it to the .zip i9000 ROM you want to port. Just giving you a hint to make it easier for you. I managed to do it some weeks ago and I didn't know the how-to before.

The thing is I want to eliminate the PC from the equation. I like to download roms from my browser and would like to download a i9000 zip, install it with another zip. And boom. I9000 Rom on the vibrant. I will see if I can work on it and make it a reality.

that approach is time consuming to do on the phone takes at least a few minutes just to extract it and same goes for zipping everything back up. trust me I've done this before and never done it again. it would be best to do on a comp less likely to make a mistake
but if you're determined to do it on your phone go for it and good luck. what rom are you wanting to port over from the i9000?

ah nameless I haven't ran that in months but if I remember correctly you need to delete or swap the bootanimation. I forgot exactly why its needed but it seems to cause issues, not really sure but I think it causes the rom to end up in a bootloop...

So I'm trying my luck at ROM creation and am learning as much as I can. One thing I haven't been able to find through Googling etc is how to port a ROM from one device to another, or more specifically what folders/files need to be replaced in a ROM to make it work on another device?
Appreciate any guidance, thanks guys!
PS I'm using DsiXDa's Kitchen, but it "doesn't support any devices besides HTC devices" and I want to port a ROM to a Dell Streak from an HTC Nexus One. Is it even possible and what files can I manually replace to get it to run?

I'm looking at a Streak ROM right now, and it looks fairly standard for Android. I would search for 'vendor tree' and/or 'extract-files.sh' to get an idea about what files and settings you might need. That will get you started. You have to swap kernels, that's a given. You'll probably need a few additional things from a stock Streak ROM, like:
files in:
/system/usr/keychars
/system/usr/keylayout
/system/lib/hw
/system/lib/modules
/system/etc
some libs in /system/lib
Probably a few things from /system/bin and /system/xbin
Look at the *.rc files in both the N1 ROM and the stock Streak ROM. They will call binaries and make changes. It's all tied together and is quite complex for such a 'small' thing... Get ready to do some research and testing and don't expect it to just work right away. If it does, your lucky.
I use WinMerge to compare ROMs all of the time. It will give you clues as to what is needed for the ROM to work on your device. And logcat will also point you in the right direction on occasion
Thanks a bunch gnarlyc!
Least I have a starting point now, going to get to Googling and see what I can figure out. And WinMerge is an awesome tool, thanks for that. I'll post back here if anything. Thanks again!
Anyone else have some information to share as well that could help?
EDIT: How do I get WinMerge to work? I installed it and tried to compare the two .zip files and it just shows jibberish in each window?

Well, it shouldn't show gibberish. I have it up right now with two init.desirec.rc files from two different ROMs. It's not going to be able to compare .zips though. Only text files and folders. You'll have to unzip those.
There are other programs that do the same thing, like 'N-way folder compare' and 'Beyond Compare' and plain old 'diff' in Linux or cygwin. Find what works best for you.

I actually found that they have a .zip plugin to allow you to compare .zips and I tried to install it but it just isn't working. When I try to unzip them and just select the unzipped folder it opens it in the selector window instead of just using the folder.
I'll keep messing with it, thanks again for the starting point at least
This Avatar.apk is for those who have upgraded to Froyo with an unofficial build that doesn't include a working Avatar app, but desire a working Avatar.apk that launches the DRM protected copy of the movie included with the phone.
Some caveats/disclaimers: I don't own a Vibrant; I have an i9000 Galaxy S and a Nexus One. I don't plan on providing much support for this, but it shouldn't need it. All the usual "I am not responsible for damage to your phone" disclaimers apply; if you don't know how to use adb and don't have root, go find out how in the appropriate FAQs.
Back story: My friend owns a Vibrant and hated it (slow/laggy). I thought upgrading it to a Froyo build would make him happy, so I did with Team Whiskey's Onyx version (very slick, better than the best ROM I have on i9000 IMHO). He was disappointed that the Avatar shortcut/app on the desktop disappeared, so I pulled the apk from a 2.1 build and pushed it to the phone, but it didn't work.
A little investigation showed that the apk file has an xml resource that is hard-coded to look for the encrypted/drm copy of the movie in the path "/sdcard/sd/movie/AVATAR.dcf", but the Froyo builds mount the external card as "/sdcard/external_sd/" so the app doesn't work.
All I did here was edit the xml file to the correct path, repacked the apk, signed it, pushed it to the phone with adb to /system/app. The apk was then available to add as a desktop shortcut again, and it opens the movie as expected.
The file won't install like a regular apk (at least it wouldn't for me), it must be pushed to /system/app to work - use this command:
adb push <your path>/Avatar.apk /system/app
You could also probably download the apk and copy it over to /system/app with Root Explorer or any other file manager that lets you write to /system/app.
I have only tested this with Team Whiskey's Onyx build and by pushing via adb. I can't test any other ROM since I don't own a Vibrant.
I know a lot of people consider the Avatar.apk to be bloatware and ask how to remove it, but I see a lot of people asking for it back because it's convenient and a great show-off feature on the phone for non-Galaxy S owners.
Additional disclaimers: I did quite a bit of searching here on XDA for an apk that took this approach and didn't find one. If it's already out there, I apologize for this post and can link to it. All I found was an apk that requires you to have a non-encrypted mp4 copy of the movie. I also found a lot of bad information about you could use the original 2.1 version if you just de-odexed it and other stuff like that. Again, this will ONLY work on a 2.2 Froyo ROM because of the change in mounting path of the external sdcard.
credit/thanks to Brut.all for his apktool and to jessetbenton for his Mac-friendly android auto signing applet.
Edit: I only modded the English language part of the apk, it may not work properly if you're using a different language.
Here's the apk, enjoy:
Wow, that first post is a lot of words for such a simple posted apk! LOL. I just wanted to make sure to cover all the bases for any criticisms I might be getting.
Thanks dude, I kept trying to install the old avatar.apk, and when I tried opening avatar, it kept giving me "file not found"
Oh, btw works on Eugene's Macnut R12
You could also just make a folder named "sd" on the sd card, and move the Movie folder there. Works just fine for me.

Yes, but then you lose that 1gb of space on your internal sdcard.
I'd have gone for a symlink approach instead, but the internal card is plain old FAT32 and doesn't support them.
Or just use the stock froyo Avatar.apk? Lol. Worked for me...

Yeah, to each his own.
My internal 16gb on the i9000 is almost full (nandroid backups, media, etc), and I have an external 16gb that's more than half full. I prefer to keep large media files on the external, obviously YMMV.
Glad you had a solution that works for you.

Thanks for the response.
I wish someone had answered any one of the dozens of posts I read where people were complaining or asking about this with that info. Would have saved me the trouble here.
Actually, it worked out well for me anyways. I have a couple of apps with the same problem where I really want to force them to use the external card instead of the internal. Now I've learned an approach I can use to "fix" or mod those apps. I wish app developers would let you specify a preferred working directory - hard coded paths aren't usually a good idea in my opinion.
At any rate, based on the number of views of the thread, and over 140 downloads between my version and yours, seems like a lot of people didn't know about this, and we've given them a working solution. That's a good thing in my opinion.
can u make this work from terminal?
Please help me to get Avatar working !
Iam on Darky's 10.2 ROM(GB 2.3.4), bullet kernel & KB5 modem.
and the movie is at the same folder structure since, my phone came stock.
I tried:
1.) I cleared drm content and drm protected content & restarted my phone two times- then downloaded the app from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=774078 but it won't install.
2.) I used the Android customisation suite from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=894794 and created a zip with just the avatar.apk , cleaned dalvik cache, and the installed the zip from CWM, still the application just clicked, but no response/error message whatsoever.
3.) I downloaded a terminal emulator & tried to push the apk from this thread and I get adb:not found.
Please guide me, what needs to be done, as I haven't seen the movie [email protected]!

Buddy, I haven't been able to get it working, thru any of these methods!
I guess, I might have been doing something wrong in ADB Push. But I even tried with a Root File Explorer and replacing the Default Application that i had flashed using zip generated by Android Customization Tool(ACS) , with one provided in the two links(one of them, gives application not installed, probably the bigger in size one, and so installed the other one, thereby replacing the default that I talked above). but for no good.
Avatar, still doesn't work. Please help, guys!!
Does anyone know where I can find a copy of this? I've done a search and all I can find is one from the international version and that's based on the 2.3.1 build.

Entropy512 started with a stock system dump that someone, (maybe Jivy26), made after installing a custom kernel. But I don't remember he ever posted a link to it. He may still have it hanging around, though. That's what he used to make his stock plus root package.

Um, what do you think a flashable stock system image is? (Other than being a sparse ext4 image, if you want something loop-mountable use simg2img...)
Seriously - spend just a LITTLE more time reading before you post in a Development thread. This device has been out for only 2 weeks so it's not like the Dev forum has tons of threads.
There's also a dd-derived system dump in page 5 of codeworkx's CWM kernel thread. I used jivy26's tar dump, although I should probably do a consistency check against seattleboi1982's dump.

Then you probably don't belong in android development (yet).
Use 7zip to extract the zip/tar/whatever.
In general, you're not supposed to put requests in Development. This should have been posted in General.
And a stock system dump IS an image dump. Zip files don't preserve permissions, and tar files only do if you prepared them carefully (good thing jivy26 did). The only way to be sure is to dd the partition.
If you want a nice easy to use zip, use paylyhoffman's stock deodexed CWM zip.

Thanks for clearing it up. My bad I thought this was the section to post requests like that.
Also folks before jumping on the guy, what he is asking for (at least with the .7z file posted) isn't as straightforward as everyone thinks.
If you first extract the 7z file, you'll get a PDA.tar file. Extract that and you'll get the kernel (zImage) and the lovely factoryfs.img.
Try extracting factoryfs.img with your favorite tools and see what happens.
Extracting the factoryfs.img is a real pain unless you are pretty hardcore -- in fact, there was another thread going on the in international SGS II forum with some pretty well known devs (who know their stuff) trying to figure out how to extract that bad boy.
So before everyone starts throwing rocks...you know the story.
Does this look easy to you?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054836 (relevant discussion starts around post #7)
and another solution (which also is not as simple as "right-click and extract")
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081239
Now -- with that said, if one was really looking for an easy way to pull some media files from a ROM, you best bet would be to try and find a CWM flashable ROM (in a zip format) and do a regular extract on those, and you may find it much easier. They may not be stock, but if it's close, you may get lucky and find some of the stock media in them.

Thanks for clarifying that pinoymutt. Yea basically I know a lot of people don't like the finished charging notification but I don't mind it and I figured it's as simple as just placing the ogg file back in the ui folder. I'm on DG's Cog X2 and he had removed that.

Doubt it's that simple. I removed the notification by modifying code. I would bet dg did the same.
I'm trying to edit some of the files in the ROM before flashing so I can have my defaults settings in place. I could do this just fine with EVO 4G ROM files, but when I try to open...say...build.prop, it says the archive is corrupt and that there are no files to extract. However, the ROM will flash onto my phone just fine.
Do I need a different version of WinRAR? Different program? Anyone else having that problem? Thanks for any answers.

Update winRAR, or try 7zip. Redownload the file if you still get the error.
Maybe the ROM is signed that will keep you from making changes without extracting it first..
Id have to say use 7zip. Free app that's a 1000 x better for using when doing rom and theme building. IMO of course

7zip does not care if the .zip is signed or not. Don't know if I would agree that its a 1000x better but thats just me. This is why I don't sign my ROMs anymore. Just encase someone wants to delete or add something before they flash.

It doesn't matter if a rom is signed or not. Its just a zip file. With 7zip u should be able to edit what ever you want. You won't be able to view any PNG files unless they are extracted but if you edit the rom or the apk it will usually break the signature which isn't a huge issue. You can always resign an apk or flash a rom without a signature. I can't stand win zip or winrar. They take forever and always have to extract crap. With 7zip its drag and drop and never an issue.
Thanks guys. I'll give 7-zip a try. That must mean that none of the EVO 4G roms I've ran (CM7 and MIUI) were ever signed...

Probably not most DEVs stopped signing ROMs a while ago.
I have a SGP5 and am using Jackpot Clavin's CM10.1 rom.
I find that the number of volume steps is too few when using headphones. Often consecutive volume settings will change the volume too much, so that one setting is too soft and the next too loud.
The solution to this is to increase the number of steps over the same volume range.
I have successfully managed to do this using the following guide (it was quite easy actually):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1411317.
Doing this produces a framework.jar file which needs to be placed in /system/framework with permissions "- rw- r-- r--" (ie read/write for user, read only for everyone else), and after a reboot (during which it will say it is upgrading) you should have the extra steps.
Anyway, seeing as it works I thought I'd share it here in case anyone else wants to have more steps to their volume (rather than the original 15 steps).
I've made some CWM flashable zip files to make things a bit easier.
Volsteps2-30 will give double the steps, so to increase the volume by what used to be one step now takes two steps.
Volsteps2-45 will give triple the steps, so to increase the volume by what used to be one step now takes three steps.
This theoretically should work for any rom (or even device) but it may be the case that a different zip file will be needed for each one. To make this compatible with more roms/devices I need your /system/framework/framework.jar files so I can patch them and make an install zip. But try it out before sending your file, there may be a version for you already made...
Instructions:
Remember to do a nandroid backup first!
Download the uninstall zip and one of the install zips from below.
Flash the install zip and reboot.
if it works, great...
if not, you'll probably find you're in a bootloop, get back into CWM (with the button combo) and flash the uninstall zip, (this will restore your system to its previous state), reboot and reply to this thread telling me that it doesn't work, what rom and device you are using and attach your framework.jar file (found in /system/framework/).
I'll patch your framework.jar file and make a new zip file for you to try, if it works for you I'll attach it to this post with a suitable description.
We'll see if we can get a nice collection for all the roms...
For UNINSTALL.zip and SGP5.0 mods see the files attached below

Nope. I can't because I can't find my SD card and it doesn't exactly work correctly anyway. I'll just have to install the stock ROM and do it like that.
Edit: I found it, but my computer doesn't want to read it, so yeah...
I've worked out how to do CWM zip files! I've made an install zip that works fine on my player and an uninstall zip in case it bootloops.
If it does bootloop the uninstall zip will restore your original framework.jar file and everything will be as it was before.
I suspect that each rom will have to have a special zip file for itself, so if it doesn't work, post telling me your ROM and attach your framework.jar file and I'll patch it. (framework.jar is in /system/framework/)
It'd be nice if we had all the ROMs covered don't you think?
See OP for install and uninstall files.

Yeah, sorry about that, I had no idea it was even possible at the time - but now I do!..
Here's a zip for you to try - remember to have the uninstall zip at the ready in case it doesn't work..
Idecided that 30 steps (each step half the original) isn't enough for me so I've made a 45 step version (each step one third of the original) - see OP
I've been rummaging about inside people's rom zips (ooerr) and have patched Iurnait's pac-man rom and latest CM10.1 too.
All the jar files are different so a different version is definitely needed for each rom... Most worrying is that TheKryptonite's IurnaitCm10.1 file is different to the latest IurnaitCM10.1 file. I hope that doesn't mean that this must be done every time a rom is updated urrrggghh....
See OP for zips...

Im sorry but WHY would you need 45 volume steps
Sent from my Kindle Fire running CM10.1/SGT7
Thanks a lot for this. This is what I needed for so long but never bothered to look. Works like it should on iurnait's cm10.1.

Changing the volume by one notch goes from too quiet to too loud (with 15 steps), I found it was the same with 30 steps, ie increasing the volume by half a step is also too much. 45 steps makes the volume change by one third of a step which, I think, is about right!
It's not that I need 45 steps, but it is about how big each step is....
Hey Mmmm-), Can you do a 30 volume step for the Slimbean ROM? Here's the framework.jar

Ok, check the OP. I've done a 45 too, just in case
Could you create a mod for the new SlimBean build? Thanks.
