I love the MIUI but I have been skeptical about trying it because I'm too attached to Samsung's specially designed apps such as the Allshare (DLNA), Email (split view), Samsung keyboard, Memo, Kies Air, photo editor and Video Maker and Voice Talk (home button double click).
From what I read, these are built on a different framework than the MIUI (CM7) which will not work. Very sad face.
So the real question is, is there a way to port any of the mentioned apps over to MIUI?
A alternative for Allshare that I would recommend is Skifta. I even use it on my phone which is a stock based rom since it is better in the area of the phone as the player since Allshare is hard coded to use the stock video player and will not let you select a different installed player which means lower format support and you can't stream mkv's to the phone from a server even though the phone could play the same file if it is on the sdcard.
For phone to other device it has the same capabilities.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Thanks shadowofdarkness, unfortunately it doesn't seem to work properly. When I click on Music it just sits there for a while, and non of the movies play. I'm thinking maybe I need another player?
I noticed it's beta, so it might be in the process of being fixed.

What is your setup, is the phone the server or player? On my phone I prefer MX video player in SW mode for best compatibility.
I have the following devices and have not had any real problems
Phone server/client
XBMC server/client
MythTV server only
The clients especially TVs can have low format support since a lot of manufacturers only put in the most heavily used formats and can even have problems with variations of certain codec profiles.
All my media is stored on a windows 7 pc that has media stream server enabled. So whatever I have in My Music, My Video and My Pictures is easily viewed in Allstream. Skifta looks great btw, just hope they fix the issues soon.

Id say that if you like those special services that samsung provides don't install MIUI. Currently it is on v4 for the GS3, nevertheless the beta is on its way and is being tested as we speak. The GUI is really nice, but you DO loose some special services.

o,thanks! your answer also helped me to solve this big problem, especailly when i just trying the MIUI V5 in my galaxy S3
I just got my tab two months ago, and I have been trying to find any app that best suits this gadget. So far, I almost got what I want, so I decide to write them down, and maybe this can help some other newcomers like me.
player:
1.BSplayer. It has a very nice ui and an functional LAN mode(you can stream from any smb server within a LAN). It's currently introduced a hw acceleration method, which I think is as good as the one that Diceplayer has.
2.Google Music. Very cool UI with a nice widget. A must-have app for anyone who likes google's music streaming service.
Google Reader
HD Reader Since I rely on google reader to subscribe rss feeds, google reader app is definitely a essential reading tool on my tab. But I really don't like the google's version(it's just a phone app). After several days of app-hunting, I found this one, it supports 3 different theme, and many essential settings such as on/off line mode, font family, cache, image downloading, etc. it's ui design is just visually appealing. Plus it has a transparent widget which is also configurable.
Podcast download/streaming
Beyond Pod. This one is definitely the best choice if you listen/watch podcast on daily basis. the ui is optimized for tablet, and transition is quite smooth. It provided all the basic features of a podcast receiver app.
Ebook Reader
Mantano I tried a lot of ebook reader's but eventually settled with Mantano reader. It has a very nice ui which is optimized for tablet. It supports epub as well as pdf. The reading experience is excellent.
Ezpdfreader. Probably the best pdf reader I could find.
Facebook/twitter
Wizz widget for tablet. this applet is just enough for basic usage of facebook/twitter. so I don't need other apps for these. Anyway, you can try Friendme/Friendcaster, and tweetcomb. These individual apps are all optimized for the tablets.
My Recommended Apps For Tablet - From Galaxy 10.1 WiFi
Player
1) PlayerPro. It is about the only player app that gave me the opportunity to edit the album art for each one of my songs. Another cool thing of it is the ability to install and use personalized Skins. Pretty Nice looking interface, to me this is my Music Player Winner. My library looks so organized with this app.
2) Google Music. As hilltruange states, this is a must-have app for anyone who likes google's Music Streaming service. I also like the fact that it kind of connects your music experience with the new market Music feauture.
3)AudioGalaxy. This is the winner when it comes to a low capacity of storage on your device!. AudioGalaxy allows you to stream ALL your music from home straight to your personal device in just a few SECONDS! This app is kind of like Google Music nevertheless it does not upload it to the cloud but instead it streams it using the internet connection. Must-have as well.
Ebook Reader
I personally go more for the cool looking interface - Flipping pages like a real book rather than what the app itself can do. Ive had my Galaxy 10.1 Tab for about 4 months now and Ill have to admit that i havent found anything really better than the Ebook.apk app that came with my Task650 - ROM. It does the job just great! In my opinion this app really makes the reading feel like if you were reading a real technological book. I personally use online EPUB converters so that i can enjoy my PDF's with the "Flipping pages" feature.
Just for the record, Ive tried Mantano and dont get me wrong. The app is awesome but just the fact that it only does scrolling effect on the pages really bugs me. :-(
Live TV/Movies/Sports/Streaming
So far my Number One app for live Tv streaming is Veetle.apk. I've personally used Veetle for about 2 years now and trust me it is great!. It is about the only app out there that allows you to stream hd movies at a very nice quality on your Tablet!. I also have NETFLIX which also does the job for me.
Android Launcher
ADWLauncher Ex. I understand that the Stock Android Launcher looks pretty descent but the ADWLauncher Ex just turns your Android Tablet experience to a whole new level! Take a look at my Google+ TNDG page:
h t t p s : / / p l u s . g o o g l e . c o m / u /0/b/103728314829341153863/#
In there i have some of my tablet screen pics using ADWLauncher Ex.
WiFi Calling! For Free
Groove IP. If you have a WiFi ONLY tablet then you should really get yourself a Google Voice account and download GrooVe IP from the market!. Groove IP tuns your WiFi Tablet into a Phone. Must-Have if you want to make phone calls for free.
OoVoO. Number ONE Video conference app WAY better and HD quality compared to Tango. If you have Google Talk and most of your friends are on it then you should be fine using the Talk Video feauture. Nevertheless, if you want to experience something different but with the same quality as Google hangouts then i strongly recommend to download OoVoO.apk.
Sound Equilizer
EQualizer. EQualizer from Google Music takes the quality of your tablet sound to a whole new level!.
Best Keyboards
SwiftKey Tablet X. SwiftKey Tablet X is in my opinion the best when it comes to a nice looking neon easy to use keyboard experience!.

thanks for the suggestion of Reader HD, that's the kind of RSS program I've been looking for! Love the theme unification with Gmail!

I've had my tab since August, and I've spent a lot of time trying out different apps and bouncing around.
I still stick with Stitcher for Podcasts, having tried BeyondPod and a few others and just not being that impressed. I'm hoping Stitcher will get more tablet-optimized soon.
For an RSS reader, I hadn't seen HD Reader before -- it looks pretty slick. I've been turned off by all the apps like Pulse which turn my daily news-reading into a huge multimedia experience; I much prefer the simplicity of the standard Google Reader app to that. HD Reader looks like it might be a nice merging, though, and I'll give that a try.
MoonReader+ works well for epub reading, but I think I'll give Mantano a try.
DicePlayer was one of the first apps I bought for my tablet for videos, and I haven't regretted it.
Reddita is great for browsing and posting to Reddit. I have Reddit is Fun for my phone, but Reddita is just perfect on tablets.
I prefer Thumb Keyboard | Tablet over SwiftKey X for Tablet, but it's pretty close. I use Hacker's Keyboard occasionally when I'm doing terminal sessions. Speaking of, Better Terminal Emulator pro is the only option for SSH sessions!
Make sure you browse around Tablified.
news360 is my favorite news app for the tab so far, but I'll have to checkout HD reader.
thank u so much guys...these lists were needed a long ago but its never late.
i agree that these lists are awesome and this thread must be sticky so that newcomers can take advantage.
Music
TuneIn Radio - Ha! Who needs an FM antenna? I can get all my favorite radio stations from everywhere I've ever lived, oh and that cool one from Germany. I haven't even bothered putting MP3s on my tab because of this app.
Ebook
FBreader - No fancy graphics, just customizable and simple epub access. Quite possibly the most opened app on my Tab.
TV
Crunchyroll - Mmmm anime. I've been tempted more than once to invest in the premium access.
Keyboard
Thumb Keyboard - Very fast, and has an awesome Tron-styled theme.
HD Reader is amazing, I've been using it since the first day I got the tab. it is the best Google Reader that I've seen

Is their a way to increase font size in mantano reader?
I just tried Stitcher and I love it so far, I think that is my media news (podcasts/video/news radio) and Goggle Currents has been nice so far for reading.
So my favorite apps are:
Podcasts: Stitcher
News Reader: Currents, Pulse
Launcher: ADW
Browser: Dolphin w/ LastPass & Xmarks
Voicemail: Google Voice
Media: Pandora, Plex, 8tracks
DLNA: Skifta
Remote Desktop: PocketCloud
Other:
Evernote
Read It Later
Dropbox
someone recommended reddita for reddit, while it is good, i prefer f5 for reddit on tab, and on the phone, bacon reader( also for redit)
I use Pulse and I really like it, some times Currents too but one big issue is offline reading i have 32gigs on my tab and i dont care how much it takes to download all news everyday from about 100 sources. but I want to read full articles with images offline when im on the road..
I would be greatful for any advice
Just had my wifes replacement tab arrive today, boy its gonna be fun getting into this thing!
I've seen a lot of great suggestions here, but was wondering if there are many launchers optimized for tablet?
I saw ADWlauncherEX suggested, i already own that on my phone so i will definitely try that first.

I don't know about launchers designed for tablets, but I use ADWex and have had no issue at all with it.
On a side note, Mint just optimized their finance app for tabs and it is great. If you're a stickler about managing your expenses, I find this app to be incredible.

Hello, I hope this is the right place for these questions. I've been surprised when I first saw this tablet. The only thing that isn't convincing me is the Amazon OS. Today it looks like a root exploit has been found ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542456 ) Now my questions are:
Is it possible to install the Google play store?
With Silk can I normally download files from browser and read them? (like pdfs or winrar archives)
Can I transfer files from the computer with the usb cable and read them from the kindle, like films or apks? (maybe a stupid question because it is android based OS, but it's the first time I'm buying an amazon tablet so better ask before..) Thanks guys
I'm having the exact same thoughts as well. About to make a tablet buying decision between the Sony Z and this. The Amazon software is the only reason I would not go with it instead
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
Let's see what people, who already bought it, thinks about it
WIth root, installing the Play store is possible and will work fine if you have all the right framework files installed. This has been confirmed in the general and android development sections.
Silk will allow you to download files just fine.
You can access the Kindle just like any other Android device when plugged in via USB. That is to say, it's drag and drop file management. I have sideloaded MX Player for video playback. It's my favorite player and I've successfully watched MKV, avi, mpg, m4v files with audio encoded in DTS and Dolby 5.1. DTS decoding requires a custom codec that's available on XDA.
PDF's work just fine. I'm using EZPDF and Moon Reader+, but you can take your pick. I don't think they can be view from inside the browser if that's what you're asking. I have Chrome sideloaded and use it as my primary browser.
The Kindle has a setting to allow third party apps to be installed just like any other Android device so APK's can be installed easily.
All in all, the HDX is almost perfect. If root access will fix the customization issues (wallpapers and widgets) along with Play Store access this will be the best device on the market.
It has the best combination of screen size, screen resolution, thickness, weight, battery life, and power. Snapdragon 800 is as good as it gets for now and really make this device fly. The resolution and color production is as good as it gets confirmed by Displaymate testing and from personal experience.
If Amazon had allowed Play Store access out of the box, it would the unquestioned best tablet on the market. Thanks to XDA, we will have it shortly.
EDIT: I have the HDX 8.9

Do you know if it supports OTG? I would enjoy connecting a flash drive with a microusb-usb adapter..
Well, I just took the plunge and bought a 32gb HDX 8.9
I have zero desire to use any of Amazon's services, but the hardware on this is so perfect for what I am looking for.
I do hope that the discovered root method will lead to recovery, and custom roms, but I am not expecting that to happen either.
After looking at what can be done with apps and everything, I can probably get by on stock. If not, there is always the 30 day return window!

Personally I don't have a desire for custom roms on this device. It is stable with great battery life. Root gets me enough of the features and customization I want. Plus I get to keep the Amazon services which would most likely break with custom roms. But I'll be excited to see if Cyanogen or Paranoid Android supports this device.

As far as I know, In Canada we are limited by what Amazon can offer to us. We certainly don't get the full experience.
What specific features does root allow?

There is a BBC iPlayer Android TV app available for the Nvidia Shield TV, but I have not been able to locate native versions of the following:
All4, ITVHub, Demand 5, RTÉ Player, 3Player, and TG4.
Versions of these apps for *regular* Android exist, and they can be sideloaded, but using a mouse or game controller stick to navigate these does not appeal.
- Do versions of these apps exist that would work properly on the shield, perhaps sideloading Sony Android versions, if that is even possible?
- Is there a complete list of Android TV apps available for all regions somewhere? Browsing to the Google Play Store link for same does not provide this.
- Anyway to check if native versions of these apps are in development, or to request them?
*Just to add, Kodi is one of the main reasons I use the Shield, there is a well working ITV addon for it, two BBC iPlayer addons, and a half working Irish TV addon. Unfortunately, even the ones that work properly cannot compare to the experience provided by the GUI of a full featured regular Android or Smart TV app.
These apps are available for the Android Amazon Fire TV, but until someone is kind enough to extract these apps and share I think we're stuck without them
Perhaps contacting nVidia to see what they can do?

I have never owned a Fire, but I have just read Fire OS is based on Android, and it is possible to sideload apks onto the fire. Would the Fire apps actually work on Android TV, and do you know if it is possible to extract them in the first place?
I will see if I can find the best way to contact Nvidia on this, be via email or their forums. In the meantime I have emailed the developers of the existing regular Android apps, asking if they could consider developing a native version for Android TV. If anyone wants to email expressing their interest in same it may help, here are the email addresses:
[email protected]

You could perhaps send them something similar to:
Hi
Could you please consider developing a version of the <insert app name> app native to Android TV? There seems to be a native app for every other platform, but the regular Android version of the app does not work on Android TV, which runs on for instance the Nvidia Shield TV, because it is aimed at touchscreen devices, rather than allowing the user navigate using a remote control.
Thanks
It seems this is possible, and I have requested this here:
Extract Fire TV APKs?
That said, someone else made a similar request and there is no indication on the thread this was fulfilled.
Perhaps an owner of a Fire TV would be willing to help us? Instructions on how to do this are in the linked thread!
I live in Scotland, and the STV Player app works fine on the nVidia Shield. But I'd also like these apps.
My5 works, too. however the app thinks it is a phone and it won't rotate out of vertical mode.
You'd think these companies would make a better effort at pushing apps for use on native Android TV.
Apps from
Amazon Fire TV
Sony Android TV's
will work on the nVidia shield for sure, but no one is able to provide them
If you look on the forum of the thread I linked to, other Amazon Fire apk requests have been fulfilled. I would be surprised if no one will help us out.
I really should have made a new thread there requesting these but it seems on XDA I cannot delete my post, and I do not want to cross post.
I have asked the mods to remove my post on the old thread, and created a new thread requesting these apks from an Amazon Fire TV owner. Voicing your interest in that new thread may help encourage someone to help us!

Have you tried using rotate this? It forces phone apps to be displayed as landscape.
So are you saying if there's a version that works with the amazon fire tv that it'll work for nvidia shield too?
I've tried to sideload the apks from my mobile devices before but with no joy.
We now have virgin tv and this doesn't support the full all4 and itv apps, only the past 7 days. Our TV also isn't supported so it would be really good to able to use these apps with the shield.
Would someone be so kind and upload the new Nvidia Shield ITV Hub App.
Inhave all the uk catch up on my shield using vpn from Ireland but the one I cannot get is all4 or 4player.Cant get it ti work even on the mobile app.
Is there a shield apk for all4 in 2018 ?
Just so you know all4 detects rooted devices even with magiskhide

Same request, could someone post or pm that APK from the shield, I want to see if it works on my Philips android TV ?
Nvideas own shield webpages say its available on the play store, and so it got me wondering if there's now a version optimised for use with remotes but not in the android TV play store for my device ?
I've tried extracting from my fire TV, but they won't install on other devices because they are linked to fire os,/app store
Thanks
OK so after nearly 4 years "my5" has had an update today that now makes it unusable on shield - so my5 is out of the equation
And my5 is back lol, well I downloaded the my5 apk from fire TV and Installed on shield, purchased my5 on amazon website through the browser on my gf's s5, then installed appstore and logged in on shield. After this my5 opens and works perfect, is actually way better than side loaded version by far - just need all4 to be remote friendly and I'm set. All I can seem to find are apk wrappers for all4 fire TV apk
Can someone please upload the latest My5 apk version 3.0.0.88.

Anyone have a copy of the latest TvPlayer (tvplayer_v4.5.1)...
Thanks
I'm setting up a TV in my kitchen and what I'd really like to do is install a touchscreen monitor and run Android on it. The idea is to be able to run Android apps such as Plex, Calendar, Google Keep and my Central Heating app as well as Music players etc, which will all link into my Chromecast Audio setup. I'm struggling to find a large enough tablet, which would have been the easiest option, and I'm struggling to find an easy way to do this.
Is it possible? If so, where should I start, I feel like I've been looking in the wrong places. If it's not possible, is there another way to get a similar result?
Thanks!
