Download a ROM for your S3 that you know will work (Stock Samsung or CM10 or something stable) from the S3 Android Development section (Should be a zip file).
Copy it to your SD Card and reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery.
Then backup everything by selecting "Backup And Restore"> "Backup".
Then select Format Dalvik and Format Cache, then go into Mounts and Storage and format your /System.
After this return to the main menu and install the ROM you downloaded earlier.

Are you on stock kernel? Have you flashed a custom kernel (with a recovery) or did you install it with xparts? You have to press volume down when the notification led lights up (or just press volume down again and again)
I'm on Stock Kernel

I'm on Stock Kernel
I've just updated the GB (2.3.4) to ICS (4.0.4) using Flashtool (for keeping phone rooted)
I've never entered recovery mode and in fact I don't no how to do that
Tried to press it over and over, keep pressing it from the begining, start pressing (or keeping pressed) when it shows XPERIA logo and blablabla
None would work
It just vibrates and brings up the safemode

If you used xparts on locked bootloader then just keep on pressing the volume rockers and touch the Sony logo simultaneously. Then you will be into CWM.
Sent from my LT26i using xda app-developers app
U sure that u have installed recovery?( Via xparts or other)
Coz the stock kernel or rom by otself doesn't have a recovery.

I have a stock Jelly Bean 4.1.2 installed on my xperia P handset. I wanted to install the custom rom CM 11 on my xperia. So I first rooted my handset using Doomlord Easy rooting toolkit. Then I copy pasted the custom Roms zip file in the internal storage. Then in order to install the custom rom I need to boot into the recovery mode of xperia P.
So I first tried using Quick Boot but it goes on rebooting to the regular jelly bean OS and doesn't enter the recovery mode.
Could anyone guide me which step I actually missed for installing the custom rom. If a perfect guide is provided I would be very grateful.
press power button + vol up button for 5 seconds... it will vibrate 1 time.. it will reboot.now keep pressing vol down key or power button ((because in some kernel key is different.)) key until it displays a menu in blue fonts.it's clockworkmod recovery.:good:

I tried doing the steps as guided by you. On pressing the volume up key and the power button it vibrates 1 time then I kept on pressing the power button. So then the phone booted in safe mode again and again and then when I stopped pressing the power button the phone booted normally again in Jelly Bean. Is there any problem with unlocking the bootloader. I have received a key for unlocking the bootloader on my GMail account when I requested it on the sony's website.
did u tried with volume down key to enter recovery..? u said that u wanna install cyanogenmod ..so u need a custom kernel which can be found in same zip file of rom named 'boot.img'.& & a custom kernel needs unlocked bootloader. if u have to unlock your bootloader ..u have to search ..it's very easy and can be found on this forum, too(( if not pm me i'll send detailed steps.)).& yes,u are gonna need that key which you received to unlock bootloader .
u can always use ( fast boot ) to flash cm11
it`s better and best ......
any ways u could inter recovery mood by pressing volm+ 2 time`s after the phone vibration ....when sony log show...
its always work
If you installed CMW, to enter it I push about 10 or 15 times, while the phone is turning on, until it loads the cmw

If u wanna help at least write it the right way...
For CWM, turn on phone, when it first shows the Sony logo start pressing various times (Volume - ) key (don't push one time and keep the finger on the key!!) until it enters cwm recovery.

For me it works only with Volume '+'
In CM11 zip, u have the boot.img... flash it using fastboot (doesn't work on Windows 8 or 8.1), then u'll have the CM11 kernel... turn on the phone and when it is starting, it'll vibrate when showing sony logo, just tap the power button when vibrates and will enter in CWM, then just follow the tutorial in CM11 topic.

I got same problem to reboot in CWM mode. Following all recommendations in this thread. Did not work.
However when coming back to one of the Xperia Phone instructions to reboot in CWM, I tried again to follow those instructions given by following links :
Sony Xperia P CyanogenMod 11 Project page Thread on xda-developers https://sites.google.com/site/androdevlinux/xperia-p/xperia-p-roms/cm11-download/
Here are extracts which I strictly followed :
First time flashing CyanogenMod 11.0 your device, or coming from another ROM? You need to be on Unlocked bootloader
Fastboot kernel(boot.img) from the rom zip
Press power button when Device vibrates at boot splash/logo to enter TWRP recovery
Format data and cache
Flash the Zip
Reboot
The "Press power button when Device vibrates at boot splash/logo to enter TWRP recovery" is really the trick to enter CWM mode ....
i installed a custom rom, but due to some reason it hasnt installed properly and not letting me access settings. and moreover i am not able to install CWM recovery as vol - button way is not wrking.
Wht shd I do?? please help

after finish full wipe i copy existenz to my memory card and insert it to my Xperia * Im in boot (team win recovery project) TWRP
but the files cannot detect so i decide to restart to refresh but there's a popup that there's no OS install i have no choice i power off the phone and when i try to boot it to (team win recovery project) TWRP i tried the Power + Vol (+) and Power + Vol (-) Nothing happen. i cannot enter to recovery (there's no notification light red or green) it stuck in SONY logo now.
PLease Help me! on what to download and what to do. im still new so i cannot understand if someone post link and not posting instruction please help me guys! Please!!!
First, you may want to reboot and just try again.
Press power + volume up at the same time for some seconds, when the phone reboots try to access TWRP again by pressing volume down some times.
Edit: sorry, volume up is philz recovery, you need to press volume down on reboot for TWRP. My mistake, I corrected the post.
