[Q] Location Services on when screen on - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It is well known that location services in Android is a battery drainer. Since I just need location services only when I actually use the phone, I would like it to turn on automatically after I unlock the phone. Is there an easy way to do it?
I didn't find the option in Tasker, but maybe I need an add-on. Anyway, if someone has an idea, I think it would be a really interesting battery saver.
Thanks!

battery drain Google maps

For a few days now I've noticed a massive battery drain of Google maps, up to 60 per cent of the battery use, without evening opening the app (must have been running in the background). I have temporarily disabled the app on my phone, but am I the only person with this problem?

Make sure the "Location reporting" (in Google Maps settings) is disabled if you don't want the battery drain. Moreover, Google Now activates the Location reporting so you might have to disable Google Now as well...
P.s: this post should be in Q&A section, doesn't it ?

I have google now disabled all the time, and the location reporting was unchecked too.. Besides that, even if that had been activated, it shouldn't have taken 60% of my total battery (I had about 70% of my total battery left when I noticed it today), should it?
(...and yes, this one should be in the Q&A section, hadn't thought about that when I posted it though...)
I had the same issue. I turned all location reporting off and turned off Google now, also made sure GPS was off. All that helped a fair amount but Maps still kept running in the background even though I'd never used the app. In the end I used an app called Greenify to hibernate maps and a bunch of other background apps and it made a world of difference. Use wakelock detector to see which apps are causing wakelocks and disable any you don't need running.

use an extension car battery so it can add battery life even for month, just make sure you will get the same voltage
Its coz of google location services bug that HTC phones are having after the update.
If you are interested about it: http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/0...ssues-for-htc-owners-google-working-on-a-fix/
In short:
Only location service thats working if you have this bug, is gps. Rest of locations services (wifi, mobile newtwork etc.) wont work.
Who couses it? - latest updates for google services.
How to fix it? - atm google is working on fix. There is some type of user fixes you can try. (see post).
Hope it explains your drain. I have this bu and i get this unusual drain from maps too.

How to get rid of google in android 4.4

I am sick of google trying to always store my location every single second of my life through my device. It eats massive amounts of battery and is not useful at all! I have no idea how to disable it completely, I use navigation apps like Sygic, so i want to enable GPS, but I am unable to set it to high accuracy, because then it asks me to enable location reporting, otherwise, gps stays at device only mode. What the hell is wrong with google? I have always loved them, but God do I hate them for being such a d***s about this.
I dont know whats wrong with them but use light gapps so less google services and the location options are in the google locaion menu. If you want good battery life for navigation and like that i recommend an rom with android 4.12 or 4.2.2

That's the penalty you pay for using their firmware rather than the manufacturer's or something based off it.

For Sygic, which is an offline app, device only gps is enough. You can look for something like LBE Security Master here on XDA, so you can decide which apps you want to allow to use gps. It helped me a lot to reduce the search for location from all kind of apps when I have gps turned on.

[Q] low battery (almost sleep) mode?

Hey guys,
I had an idea - since I'm really not "using" my Android S3 phone all day long, it gets frustrating when the bettery runs at 30% at 2pm, without any real use.
So the concept would be:
1) either a "ROM" of Android, which would be seriously minimal - like the device is not a smartphone - so only wake up on incoming call or text message
2) or an app, which does the same thing - suspends the phone completely, and wakes it up only on the incoming call or text message
I was just curious - does something like this exist? I don't care about apps, notifications, wifi or sync, I was thinking more along the lines of would it be possible to use your smartphone like a typical "cell phone", and when you need other apps or full features (GPS navigation with maps, or Shazam, or whatever it is you need) - you just "reboot" or do a qucik switch to "full Android" mode, and use those features.
Does any of this makes any sense?
I feel that the battery life should be at least 5 days in that mode, with light usage?
Anyway, I apologize if I got the wrong subsection of the forum, but I was just curious to see if anybody else already though of this, or if they didn't, would it be plausible? I'm a web developer, but I would maybe even try to make something like this in case there's a big need..
It's called deep sleep. Basically, your phone is always in deep sleep when the screen is off, unless there's an active wakelock. Usually, apps request those (or the kernel.) What you can do is to remove (or freeze) apps that request too many wakelocks… You can search around for more detailed info.
In your case, since you only want to use your smartphone as a phone, you could remove all the user apps. You can also remove Google services APKs from /system/app (root required.) To check what apps are requesting wakelocks, you can use Better Battery Stats (read the tutorial inside the app.)
Oh wow, cool! So someone though of this before me. Awesome!
Hey thanks so much for your quick reply, I'll read into the "deep sleep" logic, and I'll take a look at the app right away..
Thanks again man!
Some additional things to help:
Greenify (requires root for most effectiveness) - lets you hibernate apps
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oasisfeng.greenify
There's also the Donate package that will let you hibernate system apps.
That combined with something like this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2743316
or
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dianxinos.dxbs
Might help without having to do a bunch of crazy stuff.

[Q] Google Location History -> Battery Usage

Hi Guys!
Amazingly, I found out yesterday that Google stores our historic location. I'm thinking of disabling it, but afraid to worsen research services and access speed of Google Maps. Let me know if anyone knows this history consists of access to the GPS of the device or the networks? Consumes more battery when enabled?

You leave enabled or not?

I won't cause you battery consumption too much ( it used to be ) but with the new Google Play Service, it consume battery very low and it's really good if you leave it on.
1. It help you if you get picture and have G+ to make a Story for you.
2. It help you for your favorite location and trip time and traffic time to there.
And lots of other thing that I don't remember now.

It's strange to think how he draws our daily route without consuming battery! So I think he does this with the help of cellular networks! If the device used the GPS, we would have a huge battery drain!

Particularly I not use Google Now, much less G +, believe not be advantageous to have this option enabled! I mean, it would not matter to me!
I saw on Google's help page that it uses a considerable amount of data, which can be harmful to the battery!
I disabled both functions and deletes my history. My big fear was disable this function and impair functioning of any device, such as speed of access Maps, which tested it and did not notice any difference!
I believe that this function would be for Google to know what my daily route and enter it into the database of Google Now.

Exactly! Higgs, you leave these options enabled or disabled?
I leave this option always on! It's helps several services and apps.
Experience tells me that when this location is ON together with Google Now then it is a battery killer!!! Google now is always looking for information to show on the cards in the background and uses fairly more battery.
But of course it can be cool when Google Now tells you witch buses you can catch and how long can you be at home...

Massive Google Play Service and WhatsApp Drain

I'm facing a massive battery drain since yesterday because of Google Play Service and WhatsApp keep running in the background.
I tried to put Google Play Services to Doze Mode using Universal GMS Doze but didn't resolve it.
I noticed that both services are using 'accelerometer' and 'Significant Motion Detector' wakelock. See the screenshot.
Anyone knows how to fix this abomination?
Try restricting permission to those services

Do you use location-based phone unlocking or some relevant service? I believe only those things would use these features of the device that you specified. One quick way of reducing battery usage can be restricting permission of using those features to the services but then again, that would disable certain features. Also, try using Aggressive Doze in Greenify and add those system apps to it as if location access is granted to Google Play Services, it would certainly drain your battery even if your GPS is switched off.
