[Q] Battery drain and heat. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
First of all, i'm on newest Archidroid with boeffla kernel 5.4 on ultrapowersave preset.
And the thing is, when im at home, with wifi, data, sync on + i use 2-3 apps, my battery drain on BBS is really small like 1% per h.
But when i go out to work, where i don't have wifi access, my s3 start to melt battery pretty fast compared to previous version of rom. (~5% per h)
with no usage at all.
PS. i tried to disable FD and finally i left FD enabled, beacuse "in theory" my provider support that. (But honestly, i havent noticed any difference between Enabled or disabled FD, it was transfering data every few sec). I've got greenified all apps that i don't use. i checked BBS log, but i've no idea what is eating that much.
That BBS log starts before i go back to home from work, until now.

I dnt even get that much

[Q] Insane battery drain after gingerbread update, please advise

Hi, just updated to 2.3.3 stock rom, no flash, using the standard LG upgrade software, from v10q (I believe) to v20g.
I installed no new apps, didn't change a thing on my phone, but now my battery drains in 12h of no use, screen off.
Battery information says the phone never goes to sleep anymore, the blue bar is continuous.
I've tried shutting down running apps using both the phone's built in app manager and Advanced Task Killer, doesn't change a thing.
Searching the forums, I've found people with battery drain, but never the same issue or solution so I'm hoping someone might know something more on my specific situation.
Here's how I use my phone and what apps I generally have running:
Audio Manager Console and Advanced Task Killer are always running, I keep data off most of the time, and turn it on when I use it occasionally (usually no more than a few minutes at a time), no wi-fi, most of the phone usage comes from Think Free Office (at least since I upgraded 2 days ago) and a few minutes of calls. Brightness is always on min.
This is mostly how I generally use my phone all the time (throw in a couple of hours a day of Bluetooth music using the default music player, but this hasn't been the case since the update) and I used to recharge every 2-3 days. Now it's 2 times a day.
Before the upgrade my phone would barely burn any battery in idle (maybe 1-2% during the 12 hours, as opposed to 94% as it currently does)
Battery health seems fine, temperature is around 20-25C
What can I do?

[Q] Battery life continues to drop on stand-by after high usage

Hi,
I was using facebook (3g) for about 5mins while listening to the radio on my galaxy s2 (i9100p), and obviously battery life drains during that time.
The weird this is that, once I've closed the facebook app, turned off 3g and screen, battery life continues to drop (about 6%h, usually about 1%h on stand-by) for a few hours. After a few hours, it goes back to normal.
is this normal?? Nothing is running, it doesn't even say the phone was awake (according to battery history details chart).
Note: I'm using battery widget monitor which displays the battery %
I apologize in advanced if this has been discussed already, but I couldn't find this topic anywhere.
Maybe Facebook app is still running on background as a service. After sometime, possibly Android kills it?
Make sure you sign out of the app and exit before disabling data.

Thanks for the reply.
I'll give that a try next time.
I hate how you have to go to the applications settings to force close everything, otherwise it will keep running in the background even if you close it from "Running" tab.
I got told all you have to do is hold the home button and slide it to remove running apps, but that just deletes the history.

Problem with S3 Battery

When i fall asleep i just place my phone nearby the bed and its on airplane mode, wifi closed, data closed and generally no apps running(i think so).The battery is level (ex)50% and when i wake up,about 7 hours later its always about 15-20%.why this happen?
I checked the battery manager just after i waked up and the first was screen(56%) and after that adobe reader(10%)

Better battery stats does not work.dont know why.and i made my own post cause i cannot find the solution of the problem on other posts.try to be more polite to your answers
have you tried downloading the xda version of the better battery stats? if not here it is

Is your phone rooted? Like others said, try to install the xda-forum version of BBS but it's weird because I did install the one from GPlay.
One of the first lead is the WiFi? Is it always turned on? There's a bug with it. Go into the advanced WiFi settings and set it to 'only if activated' (I don't know the exact spell in English but it's something like that).
But you better have to dl BBS & check the wakelocks.

what?
Underclock when you're not using your phone.
That will save battery.
If ur using stock TW. Put on power saving mode
PM Me if u want to know more.
Try using an app called easy battery saver and only use the cable and plug that came with your galaxy s3 it works for me, today I had eight hours after charge and using internet with 3g nearly continuously.
You would get much more by leaving it on standby.
Also restrict your background data, turn off your automatic updates at play store andturn off WiFi while screen is asleep.
Follow all these for better battery.
Use any battery investigation apk/widget (I'd recommend battery monitor widget) and look what is causing the drain...
may I guess: cell standby or gpsd?
guys i remember you that the cell phone is on flight mode with wifi, gps and data turned off
and, if you have a soft which contains a bug - you'll have such processes running.
It is up to you to install any apk which will contain more detailed statistics what actually is consuming so much juice.
If you do not want - no one would force you.

I have the exactly same problem,30% drain overnight. That happens after updating to 4.1.1 JellyBean. With ICS never happened.
Go into the battery page, click on the graph and then post a screenshot of the detailed graph here. It is usually an app or process not letting the phone go into standby. Happened to me when I had my phone on ICS out of the box. I fixed that all up through the individual app settings and all was sweet. Then when I went from ICS to JB, the issue came up again and I had to go through the apps again to change the settings back. It seems that by updating from ICS to JB, certain settings get set back to default, which then does not allow the phone to go into standby.
Culprits that I have found are:
Facebook - set to manual refresh interval
Weather (or any weather widget) - manual refresh interval
Google play store - Turn off Google AdMob Ads
Any form of newsreader (I was using Pulse) - Turn off notification when there are new stories
Wifi advanced settings - Set Keep Wifi on during sleep to "Always"
Samsung account - Turn off sync
Samsung app store - Turn off Update Notification, turn off push notification, turn off ad preferences.

Guys please keep in mind that keeping the stock os without any custom kernel might be not as effective than using an adequate custom rom...
In addition remember, cooler temperatures cause ur battery to lose its charge faster...
So if ur phone is placed on the window shelf and its getting cold during the night it might cause ur battery to drop fast..
I made this observation with my sgs plus....
Hope i helped.

My Galaxy S3 Battery Life Sucks Please Help! 15% After Only 7 Hours.
I’ve been having this same problem sense I got my phone about 2 months ago but now I’m finally just tired of it! My phone is rooted, using the stock ROM.
What I do to help battery life:
- Every morning I hold the home button and kill multitasking and kill all running aps in the background then I open autokill which automatically kills running apps in the background that are not needed.
- I have power saving enabled
- Easy Battery Saver running
After 7 hours of use I’m already at 15% and through out the day I barley use my phone. Its like this just about everyday. I use my phone about an hour of the entire day of web surfing and Facebook usage etc. The rest of the day I’m only texting and maybe taking 3 or 4 phone calls that last 10 mins. How much battery could that possibly take? A flip phone can do that and last 3 days..
I used my iPhone 4S much more during the day then I do the galaxy S3 because the S3 has terrible battery life.
On my iPhone I would have about 22% after everyday of using it for 11 hours down time = sleep and 4 hours of usage = texting, , phone calls, web surfing, games etc.
I don’t play games or watch movies on my S3. Only texting, instagram, facebook, websurfing which is about an hour a day usage. Also a couple minutes of GPS usage on some days.
What can I do to fix this? I don’t want a bigger battery that will make my phone any thicker.
I have pictures below showing usage through out the day and usage under battery.
Please help!
Thanks!
You screen is using most of your battery. Check the brightness levels. Are they on max or close to it? Switch it to auto

Oh thats easy.
You're phone is always "Awake". It doesn't go into Deep sleep like everyone elses. If you take a look at the first picture you linked with the graph, it shows that the phone is always AWAKE.
For comparison, I have attached mine as a reference but something is DEFINITELY keeping your phone awake.

Can't really see anything that stands out per say...
If you see anything on that thread or any apps on your phone that you think could be keeping it awake, just uninstall them. I would suggest trying to remove them a few at a time just to narrow down which ones are keeping the phone awake.
Also, apparently this app helps a lot (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bvalosek.cpuspy) and Better Battery stats should give you a better idea of which apps use the CPU while your phone is trying to sleep.
Oh and remove any task managers you have installed.. Those tend to be the worst offenders.
One last thing, found this on another forum:
- Don't use an automatic task killer--not even the one that comes with the phone. Reboot your phone and look at what's running. If anything that you've installed is running and there's no reason for it, then uninstall it and find an alternative that behaves. Ignore any stock apps that run on boot as I've found them to be more or less benign.
- Weather widgets, live wallpapers, news/social feeds, any app or service that you use that runs--do without it if you can. If you can’t do without it, lengthen it’s refresh time.
- Don't use antivirus
- Set your WIFI sleep policy to never. The default is "turn off when screen turns off". This will cause the wifi to reconnect every time you open the phone. From any Home Screen select Menu/Settings/Wireless & Networks/ and then use the Menu button to see some new options - select Advanced. Then select Wifi Sleep Policy and set it to Never. Home key to return to Home Screen.
- If you have access to wifi, leave it toggled on as it is more efficient than 3G. Wifi consumes less battery power than 3G.
- I leave GPS toggled on too by the way. Apps use it as needed. When I'm done with Maps or an app that uses it, I'm sure to return to the home screen so GPS can stop. Under wireless settings turn on "Google location services" so that an app is able to use network resources to get your location instead of GPS. I have "VZW location services" turned off--don't know why that option is even there. By the way, I increase the speed of voice output > text to speech > speech rate because I like the directions to get spit out faster. That saves a bit of battery. Turning off the display and just listening for directions help. Also, often I just get the directions and then exit back to the home screen: GPS uses so much battery I try to get it over with ASAP.
- Under Accounts, click on any account listed and turn off sync for any items that you're not interested in syncing. For example, Google Books if you don't use it. Don't use Backup Assistant--I prefer syncing my contacts with Google. You don't need both. Also go into your contacts > menu > display options > backup assistant > UNCHECK. Also do contacts > menu > more > settings > contact storage > and select your Google account and "remember this choice"
Are you on the 3G network a lot or weak signal areas? Is your phone hot around the bottom? If yes to both, most likely it's because of the system attempting to find a better signal. When I was swapping out my SIMs, in various countries, I only have 3G network and my battery fully drains in 7hrs at idle. The only way i can go a whole day is to place my phone into airplane mode or wifi only to conserve the battery.
my battery runs at-most 13 hrs........................

Welcome to smartphones. The calls alone will drain the battery. Seven hours isn't horrible for all that. It isn't a flip phone.

maybe you have to flash a new rom
If you want, you could try to flash a custom ROM. I had the same problem that you have, and I flashed Revolutionary S5, and now my phone lasts minimum two days with the same usage, maybe a bit more.
Too bad Tony Stark hasn't gotten involved

Titanium Backup will assist a little bit. When you do a backup of an apk it will tell you if the application is running. You can find all kinds of sneaky apps this way. Many of them were ones I didn't use and didn't really want. That will probably yield minimal results, though. Keeping a black background helps on my S3. Colors, widgets, and live backgrounds will drain the battery. Turn off the menu and back key lights. You know the buttons are there. Turn off all haptic feedback and key press sounds. Of course, try to lower the screen brightness. Leaving my data and sync on hasn't caused me any problems, but you will save some battery by turning them off when not in use. I also read a post about hidden menu options that ran even when they weren't meant to. That was an issue that destroyed battery life. Some ROMs also have settings for data connection type. You'll save power by telling your phone to not worry about gaining signals like 4g, 3g, etc. As other people have said, try out some ROMs that make battery life a big priority.
it CAN get better
if you want to have a good battery life, use custom rom and kernel (or a modified stock like omega rom), watch out for wakelocks + apply these settings:

Question regarding battery

I recently installed LS 4.0 on my Razr Maxx and noticed on my break at work i was at around 35% battery, then 2 hours later when i got off work i was at 3%, in that time i didnt have any apps open so the drain dosent make any sense. I took a screenshot of the battery graph for reference: http://i.imgur.com/MyUDnNT.png
As you can see on the graph it randomly drops off there and then goes down at a pretty brisk pace. I wasent using the phone from 6pm to 8pm, right around the time it dropped all that battery.
Could this be due to my battery just dieing out or is it possibly a issue with the rom?

Please describe more information like:
1. was your network set in 3G? LS battery isn't really good with 3G
2. what number of app you are using? social media apps that always updating their data i.e google+, fb, etc --> would increase data usage when they synchronize.
3. please check whether your razr went to deep sleep.
Solution:
1. Set to 2G always and go to 3G if you want faster speed (download the 2g/3g toggle widget for L)
2. Uninstall those app if you're not using it or limit their synchronize routine by the app itself or using profile in Tasker (advanced method)
3. you should installed wakelock monitor app from Play Store
If battery drain were persist when you have done those troubleshoot and solution, you should try to calibrate your battery (leave it shutdown automatically after reaching low level and then charge it until 100%, go + 1 hour to make sure, go to recovery to check the % and then boot to your system and calibrate using calibration app from the Play Store).
Last one, if calibrate doesnt work, then the battery might be already dropped.
Also do check that location services etc are set to power save mode.
Use an app to check wakelock and disable that annoying app.
or may be you are right... lets hope not for your own wellness!
I also remember having that problem when I was on cm12. After my battery dropping insanely low, it kept long before the little juice left in it run out.
So i thinks its something with the 5.0 ROMs
