its a safety thing
the NC headphones are quiet because with volume past the limit you will do serious damage to your ears with NC on, its why they are louder with NC off

Anyone had any success with an app to boost the speaker volume of the NC?
I read that Audio Boost 2 doesn't alter speaker volume much. I have not tried anything yet, but would any audio app with an EQ function allow boosting all freqs. work? I know that there is a chance of overdriving the speaker, but I want to try to get this "fixed". The speaker volume is the single most annoying issue with my NC. Mainly with sources with audio tracks that are recorded at low level.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,

Obviously, no-one did much. The worst part is NC's CM7 devs don't see it as a problem.
However, if you could talk dalingrin into looking into the issue (I myself failed to entice him to do anything), then there are some chances with his forthcoming new audio pipeline/ALSA commits.
As of now, when on CM7, you may try to play with DSP Manager's equalizer. Doesn't do much, agreed.

fineoils.blogspot.com <<-there's not many answers here, but there's plenty of questions, sure
Only luck I'm having is headphones. Its really bad when the speaker is pushed up against the back of my case. Volume is horrible.
Use earphones will be the best bet for the time being.. Unless is CM7 got vol boost...
you can try poweramp, it has audio boost eq
yes its work withe me
Played around with Poweramp. Adjusted EQ midrange boost, keeping bass low & boosted Preamp setting & have determined that the speaker may just suck! Unless Poweramp EQ is adding distortion when the levels are boosted, the speaker can't handle much volume before breaking up. There may be no hope that the NC will ever have decent volume.
I find the volume on many sources to be barely adequate for personal listening in a quiet room, but for showing another person a video in a not so quiet environment, it is barely audible. I have also noted that the audio quality from the headphone jack is really poor when compared to any decent MP3 player. Looks like B&N saved $$$ on the audio section in order to bring us the nice screen & other quality hardware. I think that I am OK with this, but it would be nice to have it ALL!
Cheers,
kev
P. S. This may end my search for an internal solution to the volume level. Probably keep experimenting with small phone jack based amplified speakers.
The volume seems fine to me.
Hopefully we can have a stable Bluetooth stack working, so that we can pipe to audio to BT Speakers...
I really think the physical speaker is just crap. At the end of the day, you can't fix crap.

That's the conclusion that I am coming to. Seems B&N found it necessary to keep the output level low so the speaker doesn't break up. Be fun to remove it & connect another more efficient one that can handle more power. I think I will continue to experiment with the small headphone connected powered speakers.
Cheers,

I would be interested in seeing how much it would cost to solder in a "good" speaker.. I would think there would be a bit more space to squeeze in a decent speaker or possibly two?
First thing I thought of before I even bought my nook was what speaker was I going to buy for it! When I saw it in stores, I knew there was no way that speaker was going to do anything, and it made me wonder why it's even there. Considering that it's not loud enough for audio books really and mp3's would just play way too low, I think they should have just left it out and added 2 aux ports! Okay, that might not be realistic, but still!
I've opted for a portable iHome speaker from Wal-mart(it's the one that is a round cylinder and if you buy two you can have them hook to each other) for only $20 and should be getting it today. Unfortunately my PSP speakers blew out or that would be perfect for the nook since those things were loud enough to start a party.
Try my mumusicon it has got a sub increase function and that increased my nc's speaker volume more than 40 percent without causing distortion

I wonder if its possible to add in one of those tiny compact laptop subs too. My dell xps has one on it, they might be too thick though.

Well, I dnlded Mymusicon & don't see any way to adjust the volume???
Edit: OK, tapped the album art screen & got another menu. Under "volume" there is a "sub" adj. that increases volume some.
I use DSP Manager to just raise all the EQ levels all the way up. It's pretty loud now.
stoopid but helpful
With the CN facing you in landscape, hold it up with your left hand. Put your right hand palm flat on the back of the device, gradually moving your palm to the right. You find a 'sweet spot' where the speaker is amplified about 50% by reflecting towards you off your palm.
Play around a little & you learn if your hand should be half way out from under the CN at the right side for loudest clearest sound (what sounds best to me) or palm cupped or flat.
An easy DIY aplifier would be a piece of flat plastic (like cut from milk bottle) adhered with a tiny bit of velcro at the 'sweet spot'. Could be detatched for travel, not need bulky external speakers, yet deliver noticably louder sound.
No software required
Guys I have a real weird ass problem with my internal speaker (one on the left hand side of the phone) and could use some help if any has any advise
My speaker was fine prior to installing wolfs new GB rom, but since i have put it on the speaker comes on and off as it pleases. The volume becomes so low that i can barely hear it and the sound only comes out of the top speaker. I can fix the issue by plugging in the earphones into the phone, pull them out and its normal again. Rinse and repeat
I installed the xloud add on and dspmanager and it still turns on and off when it wants, even reflashed it and still same problem.
Has this happened to anyone else or have you read of this happening to anyone and a possible resolution?

your speaker might be already damaged. xloud can do damage on your speaker (even you only use it just 10 days). nothing you can do with damaged hardware.

Would that though turn the internal speaker off? It is very noticeable as no sound comes from the speaker on the left hand side of the phone, but as soon as i plug in the jack for the headphone on the top of the page the speaker comes back on

Yeh thats right... i noticed it was low but didnt realise at the time the speaker was not turning on at all so installed xloud and dspmanager after a bit of research. I didnt have this issue at all until i flashed it with the new custom rom so something has fallen ass over somewhere and was hoping with this thread that someone may know why this happened?
Normal operation of a headphone jack would be to break into the audio stream somewhere before the final amplification stage and direct it to the headphones instead. I'm not sure if that would be the fact with our phones.
I'm thinking that the phones firmware is picking up that the jack is plugged in and then turning off the external speaker.
So when you loose audio from your external speaker does your notification bar show the headphones icon? When you loose audio is it just media audio or does your phone not ring either?

No it doesnt show that, it doesnt show anything. The audio is not completely lost, only the audio from the left hand side speaker. Sound still does come out of the phone but just from the top speaker (on top next to the Sony Ericsson print) but it is very low and very muffled, to the point of not being able to hear it properly at all
This occurs for any sound being omitted from the phone, media, ring tones etc etc
Reverted back to the official SE 2.3.3 rom just to suss it out if the speaker would work and low and behold its fine. So something from the custom rom definitely stuffed something up which is a shame. How would I or anyone else go about flagging this issue with the dev?

Maybe it's related with Shazam or SoundHound.
Wolfbreak mentions it in the Wolfs ROM TW thread.

•If you have Problems with low Audio delete Soundhound or Shazam if you have installed it, they couse a error with Sound but TrackID works fine.

Hello everybody! I have noticed that the sound that come out of the side speakers on my new rooted Galaxy Tab 10.1 on the maximum level are a little on the weak side. So I was wondering, is there anyway that you can make the volume louder beyond what is set as the max volume? Thanks!
May be your headphones. I've had a similar problem when using BOSE Noise cancelling headphones, the volumn seemed really low especially on a flight, whereas with regular in ear headphones I had no problem and actually had to keep the volumn down!
Hey bro, I think this app from the market works well.
Volume Control+ http://market.android.com/details?id=com.cb.volumePlus
Turn up the media volume all the way.

Turning up the media volume all the way in the app was the same thing as using the volume rockers and putting the volume all the way up. I was actually asking if it was possible if we can go beyond the maximum volume.

It would probably have to baked into the kernel then I'm assuming. My speakers are quite loud. Maybe louder than stock. I'm using Galaxy Task 6.3 with latest pershoot kernel. Hope you figure it out.

Another thing I figured out is get an equalizer app from the market. Like this one :
http://market.android.com/details?id=com.smartandroidapps.equalizer
Turn all frequencies to the Max. Whew now they are earsplitting!
Yes, you have to have pershoot's kernel for Voodoo app to work properly.

Hello! Would you mind telling me how to use the Voodoo app to raise my speaker volume?
hi guys i find the xperia s volume low even at max when i listen to music on the headphones. i have installed many different apps such as volume+ to make it louder and have the dre beats file also installed but it still isnt loud enough for me. i have also flashed the AC!D files but i am still not satisfied. i love volume to be extremely loud on headphones to the point where your ears hurt a bit. so if there are any files you guys can recommend that i can flash or whatever to make the headphone volume super loud that would be awesome! thanks in advance
Loudspeaker on this particular device is apparently low than any other. Me myself faced the problem after i purchased it. U really cant do much with it coz apps/mods can only tweak the hardware to it's highest potential. If so, u might need to open it up and change the speaker. Now will u do that? .. Guess not. Btw, try using stock apps before u try any mod like AC!D or so and if can, do buy the sony smart headset. I bought one and its extremely loud with clear bass and sound. Music turns awesome in this pair of headset =)

You realize you only get one pair of ears and you'll have to spend the rest of your life with them? How about turning the volume a little less high but being able to enjoy it longer. I understand where you're coming from, I used to be 16 as well. But if you ever get permanent tinnitus, you'll curse yourself thinking about stuff like this.
But being the helpful guy I am: are you using proper headphones? With my headphones I can easily hurt my ears with the volume on maximum. Either you're using headphones with a low output or you've already damaged your ears. Don't use the stock headphones because those always are rubbish. I use Philips earplugs but in-ear earplugs might go louder. Good sound quality costs a bit. You can also use the stock equalizer to bump the audio volume a bit, just put all the sliders on top.
AC!D will work the opposite of what you want, it'll make the sound less loud but with higher quality. At least that's what I've read about it. Personally I think the Xperia S has the best sound of any smartphone/mp3 player/discman I've ever used without messing with mods, just the equalizer. The call volume on the ear speaker is too low though, not usable in loud environments. Putting the phone in just the right way above your ear helps, but I often have to move to a quieter spot.
Answer
open with root explorer system/build.prop and find phase not sure exactly but like this "ULP low power audio ........." and just after that down you will see that this option is set to =1 it means its enabled so set it for =0 and you will have some better/louder sound and even with AC!D and all when this stay ON it just block all other i find it on my Xperia U on ICS and i think that you have this in build too, heheh HIT THANKS IF I HELP YOU
hello...
ive noticed the z2 to be a bit on the quite side (both loudspeaker and headset) while playin music...
is there some kind of mod that perhaps make it a bit more audible (like samsung's mod that is available here in the forums)?
this issue is breaking the deal with me buying this phone...otherwire its a great phone !
so far the things that I have read on these forums that work well to make it louder are:
1) Turn on Dynamic normalizer in the sound settings
2) Go into sound enhancements and set all the equalizer sliders to 10
3) Proceed to the "settings" next to the equalizer and turn on xLoud and (personal taste) turn on S-force Surround
Clear phase lowers the volume although it does make it cleaner.
Which device are you coming from? Its the second loudest device there is, right after the M8!
No other device has dual front facing stereo speakers.

There's a new mod in the development forum which enables dual speakers for ringtones and loud speaker on calls. I think the guy is also making tweaks for volume.

You can turn off Clear Audio as well to make it louder but the sound quality will go down. Just toggle it when you're listening to music or videos.
