[Q] How / Where Android set Hotspot / Tether Device Name? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone!
I just found out inside the stackoverflow,
that some of our android developers are experiencing the difficulty
of switching ON / OFF the Wifi Tether programatically. :fingers-crossed:
Until then, it's fully discovered here.
But my case here is quite similar.
How to set the Device Tethering name?
Because as far as I know, we could go to Settings | Wireless Network | Tethering Portable Hotspot | Setup Wifi Hotspot
There we could set the Device tethering name straight forward.
so,
1. But how to do it by programatically (in code)?
2. And where did Android stored that value actually?

[Q] X10 WB 2.3.3 rev4.04 Wi-Fi not connecting to hidden SSIDs

Background:
ROM Used - Wolfs TW Gingerbread | Unlock the full Performance | get 4.0.4 now: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192988
Also used 4.0.4 Stock update
Addons Used - Sony Home Launcher v2.0.A.0.22
http://www.mediafire.com/?4khhnle8lyysp
All files and updates sucessfull. No errors.
Problem:
Wi-Fi only connects to SSIDs that are visible. When using 2.1, there was no problem connecting to a hidden SSID. I'd rather not have to down grade to 2.1, but I'd rather that than leaving my SSID visible. I'm using a D-Link DIR-655 with WPA2 AES encryption.
I haven't been able to find this specific problem in the forums so I'm hoping someone can help. How do I correct this problem?
I hate bumping this but this problem is hard to find a solution for.
So I found an app that enables you to connect to hidden wi-fi. It's called HiddenSSID Enabler in the Android Market.
(I don't have enough posts to post the link.)
The problem seems to stem from this post in Google Code. It's been an apparent problem since around 2008.
(Issue #1041 in the Android Google Code page.)
Enable connection to hidden SSID:
1. Download/install above mentioned app.
2. Make sure your Wi-Fi connection is currently visible and you are connected to it.
3. Open HiddenSSID Enabler.
4a. Enter the name of your SSID.
4b. It will appear as if nothing has changed or been done. Don't worry, this is supposed to happen.
5. Disable Wi-Fi on your phone.
6. Go to your Wi-Fi AP or Router and make your SSID hidden/invisible.
7. Enable Wi-Fi on your phone and it should connect.
8. Wipe hands on pants, enjoy favourite beverage.

[Q] Wireless profile provisioning

Hi there!
I'm trying to find a way to provision Android devices with a predefined profile to simplify the wireless connection.
There are such a feature on the iPhone (i'm unable to refer you the link due to my low post count) but i'm wondering if there's anything similar on Android without an extra app.
Thanks!

[Q] How and Where Android Hotspot / Tether Name located in code?

Why not take a look at the WifiManager API and/or ConnectivityManager API?

[Q] Set. Mobile Network -> "Enable always-on mobile data" CM11 (Phoning Home)

[Q] Set. Mobile Network -> "Enable always-on mobile data" CM11 (Phoning Home)
Hi,
seems that since Android 4.0 the setting Menu -> Settings -> Mobile Network -> "Enable always-on mobile data" is no longer available (or was this an HTC setting?). Is there a substitute or was it simiply forgotten to transfer to 4.0? My problem is that even with no apps running (and no traffic in netlog viewer)Android is establishing a internet connection as soon as I turn mobile data on:
- Steps to reproduce the problem
1. Disable Auto-Sync & enable background data restriction
2. Disable Wifi, disable mobile data
3. Enable mobile data
- What happened.
1. Internet connection is established directly, no data is transferred (only keep alive packages are sent)
- What you think the correct behavior should be.
1. Internet connection should only be established when needed (many users pay for every connection attempt)
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4, but it also happens on a Alcatel Idol Mini (Android 4.2.2) and another low end phone.
According to forums and blogs, the option was confirmed for Android 2.3. It's pictured here: " guides.virginmedia.com/en/topic/htc_sensationxe/how_do_i_disable_and_enable_data_services.html ".
BTW: I disabled all server-driven notifications (mail sync, time sync). Even used AFWFirewall/Droidwall, Xposed Framework & Xprivacy. All showed no data packages traffic, however as soon as mobile data was turned on I got the "connection keep alive" headers from com.qualcomm.timeservice. However, none of the tools were able to stop or log the initial header requests, before com.qualcomm.timeservice got active. So I assume it's a kernel / root android system application.
Would be great if someone has more infos. Are all Androids establishing a connection directly after mobile data was enabled?
Attached is the connection log from AFWFirewall. Seems that com.qualcomm.timeservice is involved and phoning home. What's frightening is that it connects to 173.194.32.238, which seems to be a facebook IP:
How can we block that crap?
Anyone who is using CM and using mobile data who can confirm or falsify here?
According to Google this is not about Android, but it would be great to know if this happens for CM in general, just the S4 build or just Qualcomm devices.

So there's noone of the many users in this subforum who is using Cynogenmod and could verify if the phone trys to establish an internet connection when mobile data is being turned on (showing an E or G at the right upper corner)?

Android Tethering: APN config restrictions? or another issue?

phone: Android 7.1.2 (Xiaomi Note 5a)
got a huge 100 Go data plan (in France)
provider's policy: "tethering is allowed, but no support is given."
phone allows tethering as well — no disabled fields
I thought: configuring the Personal Hotspot and way to go!
well, connecting by wifi to the phone went smooth ... but no internet on the laptop.
whilst data is fully functional on the android 7 phone, tethering activated (wifi/hotspot, bluetooth tethering and USB-tethering, tried all three possibilities), always same effect on the laptop: I got an IP-address and all, but still NO INTERNET.
no idea why.
first tried APN settings. adding default, dun to APN type.
that didn't change a thing.
then tried to set the global tether_dun_apn using adb.
ugg:/ $ settings put global tether_dun_required 0
with this answer:
"Error while accessing settings provider
java.lang.SecurityException: Permission denial: writing to settings requires:android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS"
now i'm totally stuck.
anyone?

last attempt.
dual sim phone, right?
switched the sim from slot#1 to slot#2 and tethering suddenly works !??!!
one issue remains: I cannot see the speed of the connection on the phone.
tethering seems to use a different "channel"?
so also the data limits on the phone aren't functioning the way they should
any hint?
