[Q] Returning tablet back to stock? - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

hey guys I'm new to posting here but have found some very good information here over the years. My question today is I just purchased a nook tablet 8 gb for my child. The guy I bought it from says that it has been flashed over to liquidsmooth rom version 4.4. I'm not very familiar with liquid smooth or the nook tablet. I also am somewhat paranoid about using hardware that was rooted and flashed by someone that I don't know. My main questions are can this be flashed back to the original b&n rom? Does the current up to date factory rom for a nook tablet have access to google play services? I am under the impression nook devices have all been given access to google services since nook store is being phased out. Does the factory rom include decent parental control provisions? Or as an alternative, is there a better rom to use that include a good set of parental controls and also runs pretty smooth without a whole lot of fluff? It going to be used by a 9 yo to play disney game apps, hay day, and the occasional other child centered apps that she may be interested in.

The Nook Tablet ROM (up to the latest version 1.4.3) does not support Google Playstore.

I think you should be able to get a good degree of parental control with CyanogenMod CM10.2 or CM11 multi-user capabilities.

I think I was getting the nook tablet and nook HD confused when I made the purchase lol. I done some more reading and found out it's the nook HD and HD+ that have access to play store with stock ROM. I have used some of the older versions of CM on the HTC droid incredible I had several years ago, but haven't touched any custom Roms since. Had anyone used the liquidsmooth ROM on the nook tablet? If so, how did well did you like it?

Did you flash the 10-touch touch-screen FW while running custom ROM?
If so, you'll need to back to custom ROM and use the Touch FW Flasher app to revert it 2-touch (since stock ROM only works with 2-touch FW).

Thanks again and hopefully i can get my Nook NT back to work.

The "Touch FW Flasher" app is included in CM10.1/CM10.2 as well as CM11. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51377882&postcount=163 for info/pointers on how-to flash CM10.x. If you rather not install CM internally on emmc, you can just burn onto SD a pre-made CM10.2 SD-card image from http://iamafanof.wordpress.com/2013...id-4-3-for-nook-tablet-imgsdc-boot-09aug2013/ and run CM10.x and its apps (including the Touch FW Flasher app) off SD.

[Q] calkulins Rom

i just noticed that the "My Apps" button in the market now looks like a phone and says "sprint"
If i click on it it doesn't take me to my apps.
Anyone else having this problem?
That's normal for this build. If you click on your Menu, you'll find My Apps there.
Thanks you were right

I'm really enjoying this ROM. The speed of the machine is phenomenal.
Love the Rom ad well but can't seem to get the market updated or to show all apps. Any thoughts?
I've tried market enabled to no avail.
Issue with ROM or with G-Tab?
I've noticed that if I let the g-tab go to sleep, I'm having to reboot it get it to wake up.
Is anyone else having this issue? I've had my tablet since x-mas, but have nto used it much. It sat in a desk drawer for about 2 months, and I'm just now getting into using it.

I have this issue with every rom ive tried on my gtab. So now I pretty much just install clem's kernel everytime. Plus it gives me CIFS so I can stream media from my windows pc .

Yeah, again it's just the build. There are a ton of hacks that will get you more of the market, but I doubt you'll ever get "everything". Considering that the GTab wasn't blessed by Google, we're lucky to have the devs here to get the market at all.

Another issue with this ROM. Some have fixed it by going to Clemsyn's kernel, others to Pershoot's and still others by using CPU Master Free. Personally, I just set my tab's Screen Timeout to Never. What can I say...I like simple.

I agree. The only problems I see with it are no news and weather widget like on tnt, and the horrible photo album (I think it's from stock?)
Fireware
This may be a stupid question, so I am sorry if it is, but Calkulins v1.1 says it is "Based on rooted 2.2 / FRF91 - TnT 3991"...
so can you run it on the 1.1-3588 firmware, or will that brick?
Again, sorry for my ignorance...
Thanks!
ROM's and Firmware are the same thing. If you're asking whether you can use ClockworkMod or standard recovery, the answer is yes. Calkulin's ROM is a hybrid using the newer 3991 build for features but the older bootloader and recovery. It shouldn't cause you any trouble loading it over 3588.
Thanks! Sorry, I confused the firmware with bootloader, thanks for straightening that out!
No problem. Just want to make sure that I understand the question correctly. Happy modding!
All Done!
Woot!! I will say, I bought this on the woot! deal... and although I consider myself very computer savvy, I have never rooted/hijacked/whatever a device before...
Happily this was super easy! I wanted use the stock ROM for a bit to get familiar with it, but I just couldn't stand how slow/unresponsive/just crappy it was!!
So I jumped the gun and started in... luckily I did a lot of reading first!!
Loaded up Clockworkmod - and made a backup first!! lol
Used clockworkmod to install Calkulins ROM---OMG is it fast!!
The found that I was having the sleep-death issue... so I loaded up Clemsyns Kernel Too!!
Not a single hiccup! Even for a noob- this is super easy! Just follow all the great advice on the XDA forums (and don't skip steps!) and you can't screw it up.
Thanks to all the great people on here, for the hard work, and patience... I love seen good communities like this!
DeadEnd
Which version of Clemsyns is recommended?
Hi,
clakulins ROM is my prefered ROM so far
But, it needs some issues to be addressed to make it my daily driver.
1- sleep-to-death
I know we can use another kernel to fix this (so I keep this fix for later if everything else can work)
2- Settings/Family accounts/add member
This FC every single time. I definitly need this functionality. My Gtab being a family device....
3- Photos is horrible as previosuly pointed out in this thread. I want a centralized place for all my photos, or at least for local storage + picasa. With this gallery, we can only access picasa public albums. What about my own account !!!
4- Photos started to display pictures roatated one quarter to the left. It doesnt let me re-rotate them back to original. It does that for evey single picture, i cant fix this. Photos is now unusable
I tried a few Photos gallery apps from the market (6-7 so far). None of them works to my liking.
I just want somethings simple that get access to all my pics.
5- Cant play videos anymore. Not even the sample 'car' and 'king kong' that came with the Gtab.
If I can fix all of the above, calkulin will be my only and permanent ROM.
(ps items 4 and 5 were previously working ok in this ROM, this started yesterday)
Also, another things that is on my whish list:
- Have bluetooth HID
I have this blutooth keyboard collecting dust on the used parts shelve that I would like to use with the Gtab
thank you calkulin for all,
So, I decided to install clemsyn kernel to fix this sleep-death problem.
No problem installing, everything went well.
But now instead of comlaining that it cant play videos, it just FC on every videos I try to play.
I feel a complete reinstall will be necessary.

Why doesn't anyone use CM7 for G-Tab?

Are the mods of CM7 preferred over straight CM7? Also, just to get HW accel, should one stick with Vegan 5.1?
Just ordered my G Tab from Amazon and wondering what ROM I should jump to.
Thanks for your time.
Each ROM has it's fans but I've been running VEGAn 5.1.1 since it was posted and for me and my needs from a tablet it's rock solid without a bunch of force closes or other issues like I've read other people report about other roms or tweaks (like using different kernels) they've made to them after they've flashed a flavor of rom.
I use my gTAB for games, reading books/magazines/comics, accessing my work computers, watching ripped videos, watching flash videos on sites like HULU (needs hacked Flash) or Fox Television (doesn't need hacked Flash). And I've had access to the Market with almost every app I've needed or wanted show up without any tweaks.
In the end it's really up to the user and what the user wants out of their tablet.
I moved to the Vegan GB ROM mainly because, for some reason, Flash kept malfunctioning on any of the 2.2 ROMs I used. I miss watching videos, but hopefully a GB driver is forthcoming.
On the 2.2 side, I preferred Calkulin's ROM (with pershoot's Froyo kernel) because it was fast, and I also thought it was more tablet-oriented.
My advice is, while your tab is still new and you don't have it as customized as you will in the future, flash every ROM available and take them for a test spin. I'd run Calkulin's Format All zip before every ROM install just to be safe.

Considering how easy it is to do, I second this. It's pretty much what I did before settling on VEGAn 5.11, although I think I may try VEGAn Ginger again.
I am running CM7 on the Gtab without any issues. I chose CM7 rom since I am familiar with it because I am using that on my DInc.
Yeah I was considering VEGAn Ginger too. Let's see how much free time I have this weekend.
I am running cm7 on mine....since all the other versions are based off cm7 anyway. Cyanogenmod does an update and pushes it out...I don't have to wait for the others to update their source base from cm and merge in their rom edits.

where can i get the hacked flash? i downloaded a 10.1 hacked from a link, but then hulu said i needed a newer flash,
I use CM7 with Pershoot's kernel and VTL Launcher. I've found it quite nice since they integrated in the tablet tweaks. I don't watch videos on it, though, so I haven't had to worry about hardware acceleration. Though, apparently, the last stable release and nightly gives some NVidia tuning, though not full hardware acceleration like Froyo, from what I gather.

You can get the hacked libflashplayer.so file for flash 10.2 here. You need to install the standard flash 10.2 first, though. It's available on the market, but you can also get it here if it doesn't show up in the market for you. I've been running it on CM 7.0.2 and it works great; just make sure to set your browser to desktop (in stock browser, Menu>Settings>Select User Agent; I set mine to linux desktop) and configure the run at boot file transfer script (instructions are in the post).

Download the attached zip to mount the internal SD card as /sdcard instead of /emmc if you wish.
You can also Google "CM7GBMod3.zip" to remove all unnecessary CM7 apps to give you a cleaner feel.

What should I do with my Nook?

So I rooted the Nook as soon as it came out a while ago. It started getting screwy recently. Wi-fi stops working. Random apps crash. I want to start over. What would you guys say is the best and stable route to go? I have the 16gb model and an sd card.

I just wiped both of my 16g nooks last night, as I was wanting to repartion the internal card, and after looking over many many many posts, this is what I ended up trying. I can not explain how easy this was. Both are working great, albeit, stock 1.4.2 - Now, off to Root..

I meant more along the lines of which ROM seems to be the best route right now.
If you're still rooted, install indirect's app, flash clockworkmod recovery and flash cm9.
Unless you want to use your nook for high end games or netflix, cm9 is the way to go. Its pure sexy android tablet edition.
Make sure to make a backup in recovery before doing anything.
I guess I'm gonna give CM9 a go. I was just hesitant because its still in Alpha. Will the nook apps still work? Library....etc....
No, apps from the Nook OS, afaik, do not play well with other roms. You could try to back them up with titanium backup and see how it goes, but I don't think it'll go well.
FWIW, there is a B&N android app you could get instead.
That B&N app works with CM9?
The one from the play store does, yes.
Cool......Gonna give it a try then.
I am running cm7 internally and i backed up my games and apps that i downloaded from bn when i was on stock and they all work on my cm7. Im not sure if they would work on ics, but they do work on cm7. Also, the bn app from the android market works really well, as long as you aren't trying to read any of the interactive nook books.

Just wanted to let you know that I installed cm9 to see if the apps work and they do. I've tried all of the apps that I purchased from the bn appstore, back when I was on stock, and they all work wonderfully. So, no need to worry about that being an issue. By the way, the new cm9 release seems to be a whole lot more stable, so give it a try.
Sent from my Team-B CM7 Nook Tablet using Tapatalk
Oh yeah apps from the B&N app store should work when backed up and restored. The only reason they wouldn't if it is a paid app and the app developer has some sort of license check thrown in that checks to see if you paid for it. They could also make it so apps are tied tightly to the store; with amazon app store apps, you need the amazon app store installed for the apps to work (at least for the paid ones, in my experience) . It seems this isn't the case for B&N though.
System apps though from the stock B&N OS will probably not play well with an aosp rom. I imagine its similiar to trying to get something like HTC sense to work in aosp roms.

You can go back to stock/factory fresh whenever you want. Make sure you do backups - easier to to return to your current state.
In case you are worried that your paid apps won't work, all of mine do. I'm using quickoffice pro and office suite from bn as well as all.my games, angry birds and such. There may be some that won't work, but all ones I paid for still work with both custom roms.
Hope this helps

Stupid Newbie question

I am currently running CM7 installed from SD card. (Thanks CelticWebSolutions, and others) Works great, but occasionally I need to reboot the tablet, either because something crashes, or I just turn it off when I know I'm not going to use it for a while, or (most often) when my 3-year-old holds down the power button just to see what will happen. When I reboot, I have to have the USB cable plugged in, or it defaults to the stock Barnes & Noble software. This is not really a problem, but...
I realize I have no use, ever, for the stock software.
If I install the internal CM7 (or CM9 or any other ROM, for that matter) will it completely overwrite the stock software? What I would like, in a perfect world, is a Nexus 7 with an SD card. Failing this, I'd prefer that my Nook never even knew it had ever been a Nook. I would like an experience as close to stock Android as possible (any version, I don't care). I would like to be able to hand the tablet to my 3-year-old to play with without him constantly rebooting back into B&N.
I appreciate any help or advise. Please bear in mind, though, that I'm still kind of new at this whole Android thing. I may not be a complete idiot, but it might be best if you assume that I am...
Thanks in advance!!!
P.S. Today, for the first time, NetFlix has stopped working. When I try to start NetFlix, it instantly goes to a black screen, pauses for several seconds, and boots back into the stock B&N software.
However, if I start NetFlix from the stock B&N software, it works just fine (though it is an older version of the NF app).
Curiouser and curiouser...
Yes it will override, you need to flash CM7 from CWM recovery. Then format your sdcard with sdformatter (recommended)

CM10.1 Official ROM review

The CyanogenMod team has recently created CM10.1 nightlies for the Nook Tablet. Let's take a look at it.
At first sight it looks pretty good, and looks very clean (ditto). There is no gapps preinstalled (also ditto), so you need to flash the latest gapps ROM. This is official CM10.1, so nothing has been removed. After flashing gapps, you have to go through a brief setup process, and you're ready to go. This is a nightly build, but if reflashing a ROM every single day and losing all of your data is what disturbs you, think again; CM10/10.1 has a built-in updater tool, which is available in Settings<About tablet<CyanogenMod updates. I flashed this ROM yesterday, and today there was a new nightly (ditto), and I went into the updater, flashed the new update, and it simply was like an android upgrade when it booted after flashing the ROM from the tool. NOTE: To use the tool, you need CWM/TWRP. This does not work with other recoveries. For me, I don't even know why they call this ROM nightly. It is running perfectly stable for me. If you are on unofficial CM10, and want 4.2, but are disturbed by the alpha CM10.1s, you might want to check this out because for me, under my terms, it should at least be deemed RC. Already. If you are running another kind of CM10.1 (unofficial), you might also want to check this out because it is official, after all. If you are already running some other kind of 4.2 which you are happy with (like PA or PAC-man), you may or may not want to check this out. The new interface does have the pie launcher, due to CMs recent decision to include it, so if you are running PA simply for that, you might want to check this out.
UPDATE: Looks like the CM team has build a new RC2 at this point (which I am running of course). It eliminates basically all of the bugs I described earlier, and is much more stable than other 4.2.2 ROMs I have looked at (I have not looked at Xylon, Liquid, Carbon, or Slim however) (I have looked at PAC and Ubuntu) (Tried to flash Slim once but failed something about /tmp/sideload.zip, I reset to factory). The only problem I have had with it is that initially the Play Store didn't work (same with 20130518 nightly). I think it was the fact that I dirty reflash ROM updates. Wiping fixed it. Also, I occasionally see freezes or delays. But still, more stable than others, and I am in high anticipation for stable
Recommendations: If you are on anything, check this ROM out. Flash it. Just flash it already. It's awesome. I recommend this ROM over anything xD.
The biggest problem is battery drain too fast. Because Nook Tablet is not compatible with standard Android hardware and it's eBook Reader, I always wish it's better battery life for using every day as eReader Plus with fully Android features

Have you tried a different clock app? Or, changed governor settings? What happens if you use setcpu (app from play store) and forced min to say 200. What make you think it's a deep sleep issue? Are you using better battery stats app to see what's happening?
Or better yet, what have/haven't you tried?

This ROM MAY NOT have the problem of WIFI radio staying ON during sleep.
My particular NT has problems using CPUtuner ( a way to trigger to turn off WIFI when the screen goes out, or if the NT goes to sleep): CPUTuner disables the radio, but leaves WIFI set as ON, like the built-in wifi sleep management.
I now use AutomateIT, which turns WIFI off, rather than turning off the radio. This works well for me. So then deep sleep works.
The problem with this, as I just got reminded, is that anything downloading (with the browser, or like magazines in Zinio... STOP or FAIL when the screen goes out.)
I just put on 041613 nightly, and the Nook disconnects from the AP when it sleeps.
I'll have to see about power usage, but it looks good. (nope, lost 10-12% overnight.... back to turning WIFI off with a service)
This ROM also seems to default to landscape. Mine has 0 degree as Landscape. 'Power widget' auto-orientation off/on is not working for me.
I had to run Fix Permissions and/or cache format in CWM 6.0.3 (what I already had loaded. I did not load the recovery in the first post. I don't know what version it is) to fix a mediascanner error at boot with this ROM.
Zinio won't connect to it's servers with this ROM.
WPA2 connections sometimes fail and need retries to get connected.
The good is that this ROM feels great, so I'm sticking with it. Most responsive I've used so far (although 'bout the same as 2/6 AOSP ROM).
Started with CM7, then updated to demetris_I's CM10 build (huge thanks for a great product) then did the CM Update from my table this morning 04/19 nightly and it is is smooth and fast. Huge props to CM and everyone that made this a possibility.
I have a Pattern Lock set and when I either re-boot or power on, the lock screen get's skipped and it launches directly to the home screen with a Clock has stopped error. But if I then launch a program and come back to the home screen it locks and I have to enter my pattern. Any body else seeing this?
Is there a way to enable larger multitasking images like in the sgt7 ROMs? And tablet ui only in landscape?

I have, honestly. I'm seeing problems now. However, I'm still satisfied, especially because I use WidgetLocker anyway, but I used to use pattern lock and had the same problem. Hopefully fixed by M4 or M5 or something.

Many thanks. Actually installed a newer nightly, I think 4/24 directly via EMMC clearing cache/factory reset and it fixed the issue

Please forgive me, but I have to ask before it drives me nut; What are you "ditto"-ing? Is this in reply to something else that I've missed? Sorry to ask, but I find myself completely fixated on those "dittos". Yeah, crazy, (and osessive!) I know, but I'd hate to lose out on some vital info around the beloved NT!

I mean, it's stock CM. And basically no ROM has gapps.

My Nook Tablet 16GB is still on it's way so I haven't been able to do any rooting and flashing, just reading. Question, does CM 10.1 have microphone support so we can Skype and use Google Now?

All good. Just tested using my nook, which has 4/30 nightly loaded as of this morning and voice search works well as does Skype for voice, of course no video, since Nook doesn't have a camera
Just installed the Nook on Fire Showtime kernel on top of the official CM 10.1 ROM. It is AWESOME!!!

Ditto. I am running RC2 with 3.2 and loving it. I really should update Cm, but hate the pain.

Moving up to the official CM 10.1 wasn't painful at all. In fact, it was probably the most pain-free experience I've had with my NT
