So the other day I tried to hook up my phone to my computer and turn on USB tethering. As soon as I tapped the switch, a sprint banner popped up and said I needed to sign up for the service. I hit cancel and it still showed the button in the on position, but my computer did not pick up on the tethered line.
I thought USB tethering was still free with sprint, is this no longer true? It would be really disappointing if they were charging money even for this.

I'm guessing you followed these instructions:
http://eguides.sprint.com/support/eguides/lgg3/index.html#lg_g3_ug/usb_tethering.html
Alternatively, you could try the app I use (PDANet). You may have to download it from its website http://pdanet.co/a/ because Sprint blocks it.

I've installed the latest Verizon DCD ROM but the only thin missing is the phone's software for "Broadband Access" (ie: use the phone as a modem). Do I need to install this on the phone to use my phone as a modem ( the software CD says I do ). It doesn't have the phone software on the CD as it assumes it's already on the phone. Anyone know where I can get this app? Or a work-around for it?
No not at all... For USB connection Follow these steps.
1. Connect USB cable
2. Open your comm manager on your phone and select Internet sharing.
3. Click connect.
You should be connected now. You can also do it via bluetooth, but I have not tried as I like the idea that my phone gets a little trickle charge from the USB cable.
from what i understand you have to pay the for the unlimited data plan nd also pay an additional 15 dollars to be able to use your phone as a braodband modem
I have the unlimited data plan, but I do not have to pay and additional $15 to use my phone as a modem. I would need to pay the extra $15 if I was using the stock rom and VZW connect software.

mine doesnt do that, it starts to connect, and then diconnects and says cannot connect, the remote party has ended this connection.
Although it tends to eat the battery, I use tend to use WMWiFiRouter. This works well for me, as I usually like to be as cord free as possible. However, with any semi-recent dcd rom, you should be able to go to Programs>Internet Sharing and then, with your USB cord plugged in, hit connect. That should be all you need. Also, if that works, make sure to call VzW and have them take that off your account. Also, don't tell them the real reason, just say you don't really use it.
also...
when u first plug ur phone in, let it sync b4 u try 2 connect w/ internet sharing.
Quick question: do i need to do a registry hack in order to hide from the carrier that I'm using PAM?
Had my note for a week and it would never work right on any AT&T hotspots. It would connect but I would get a notification that the connection failed, basically it seems that the authentication failed as I would get no data despite still showing connected in wifi connections. They gave me a new sim along with about 2 hours of wasted time doing other crap. They eventually put my sim in another handset and it worked. Come to find out that 4 other people have had the same problem in the past couple weeks with their Note. One of which was there at same time and his started working about ten minutes after a sim swap. The other two both got new phones like I did. Something you guys may want to check out, especially if within the 30 days. I spent the past week skimming through and installing apps suggested apps, time to start over.

I had similar issues and got a new sim
Fixed it for me as well

Anyway, so they swapped your phone when they just needed to swap the SIM? Brilliant...

First, thansk for the thank anyways!
Second, No I did need a new phone. They swapped my SIM with no change. The one guy got a sim swap and it worked for him. Took awhole new phone for me. But I'm big on getting what I pay for. They used the free wifi as a selling point. I will very rarely use it, but first night there I was at McDs and got a connection failed notice. If i'm paying for it, it'll work one way or the other, especially now that I dont have unlimited data.
Just because it connects to a wifi spot doesn't mean you get internet right away. You still need to open up a browser and confirm to their terms and conditions before the internet works.
Yea I know, it wouldnt do that though. The browser tried to connect and got nowhere. The key to the authentication fail is that network connections showed it connected but the ATT notification said connection failed. This is the safeguard that keeps all but ATT devices off the network, a function of a implicit deny rule.
This is prob meant for another thread but they really need to make those ATT Hotspots recognize that you're on an ATT phone and auto connect without having to hit accept on the Terms and Conditions. I have times when my mother and aunt are at a Starbucks and they'd call me saying they're on the wifi but it's not working. I gotta keep telling them to open up a browser and hit accept on the terms and conditions.
BTW, does anyone know if you nuke/freeze the AT&T Hotspots app, does this prevent you from using ATT Free wifi?

I've never had to accept any Terms and Conditions on an AT&T device at an AT&T hotspot. If I go to Starbucks, the phone connects without any prompting and gains access, a little AT&T hotspot indicator appears in the notification bar. If I try to connect with my laptop or a non-AT&T phone, I have to accept Terms and Conditions.
I also had to exchange my Note this week, after about 10 days of use. The phone was in the car holder and it rebooted. It then started boot looping where it would display the Samsung splash logo, and then reboot. It would not go into Recovery, though would go into Download mode. AT&T tried to reset it for 20 minutes and then gave up and gave me a new phone.
A new problem...I still have 4.3 on my Verizon Note 2, have updates disabled via Titanium Backup, still have the original Verizon unlimited plan...the phone does exactly what I want it to do, see no reason to mess with a winning formula. Most of the time I'm on my pc, I use the Pdanet hotspot to get connection. (It uses "FoxFi" to accomplish that, can't say I'm exactly sure how) Anyhow, when firing up the wifi mode, it always has to verify with some server that I've paid the 'subscription' fee. For the last 2 days, that process just times out. I've restarted phone, uninstalled / reinstalled pdanet/FoxFi key, no change. Always times out whilst 'checking subscription status'. (USB mode DOES work, however) I suppose there could be a problem on the other end....hope this isn't something that Verizon has managed to stomp.
Anyone else familiar with this problem, else have a work-around?
I am having the same problem since yesterday afternoon. I hope someone can figure this out.
Same problem also did verizon put a block on it
Same here! Going crazy as this is only internet for me!
Wife has same problem...I'm thinking it's a problem with the server that FoxFi uses to verify that you've purchased their app. Prolly get fixed monday
(Question: I really haven't done anything to this phone for a couple years...did they ever make it truly rootable beyond 4.3? That is...to the point where you can enable the wifi-hotspot without using a 3rd party app)

Us as well...and THAT'S only because there's a 10' stick of bamboo attached to my chimney, with an omni-directional antenna on top of THAT, feeding a cell-phone booster (Gives us passable 3G upstairs, which gets pushed around our hovel with a wifi-repeater. About as Green Acres as you can get)
Foxfi is working again. Got up and tried this morning expecting the same checking for subscription message but to my surprise it worked exactly as normal. No updates or anything. Keep it up Foxfi Your Awsome!!
These tablets were exclusive to Verizon as I understand it. I posted this to XDA Assist but perhaps this is the better location.
I have used my tablet for most of the time I've had it without a SIM. It's fine except I can't get any updates to Android. I'm a T-Mobile customer and I recently got a SIM, hoping that would help get the update. (I've had lots of Xperia phones and they all--except the Z3--got updated to Marshmallow over T-Mobile's network.) Sadly, it did not. I've spent quite a lot of time on the phone with T-Mobile, Sony, and Verizon. I've googled the issues and found no solution other than getting a Verizon SIM. But that costs $40 and will be non-refundable.
When I try searching for an update via wifi, I get "Error during DM session."
When I try searching via T-Mobile's data network, I get "No network found."
T-Mobile suggests a factory reset. But what I've read says that will do nothing but cause me to have a headache putting it all back the way I want. Sony says to contact Verizon. Verizon says to contact Sony, find a friend with a Verizon SIM I can borrow, or ask a Verizon store to borrow a SIM until I get the update.
My 13yo thinks-he-knows-everything son, thinks he can do it with button combinations (power-volume, etc.) but I won't hold my breath. I had an issue with this tablet in July which kind of messed up things like that. It powered all the way down due to an issue with our rental car's power ports. Then, after charging on a magnetic charger for hours, wouldn't turn on. I plugged in a USB and it still wouldn't turn on after charging. No lights no nothing. Eventually learned about the little button beside the SIM card slot and it came on again. But will it not charge on magnetic chargers anymore and it doesn't not want to cooperate with those button tricks.
Hello everyone!
I've been searching this forum with no luck on my question so I'm posting it here. Please, if I'm in the wrong place feel free to move this or delete if not allowed.
I've found some amazing information on this site in the past (thanks to so many smart, phone savvy, outstanding members!) and am really hoping someone can lead me in the right direction. I'm very luck that I'm still grandfathered on Verizons original unlimited data program (no throttling) and my old Samsung S4 finally gave up the ghost. I used Foxfi on the S4 for hotspot with no issues and loved Foxfi! I purchased a new unlocked Moto g Power (model XT2041-4) and had Verizon install the sim card and activate. The lady at Verizon said, since I bought the phone outright, it would NOT change my plan in any way. After getting home I installed Foxfi on the new phone but come to find out Foxfi does not support Android 10, which is what the new phone runs on. I am able to turn on the phones built in hotspot, and can connect devices to it, but now I'm getting really worried that Verizon will be able to tell that I'm hotspotting, which could void my plan.
As the phone is "unlocked", and I'm not getting any warnings or messages from Verizon stating that I must pay for hotspot when I turn on the phones built in hotspot, am I worried over nothing? If I do need to worry, can someone suggest a trustworthy app (I have no problem paying for a functional app, as I paid for Foxfi and it worked excellent) that would give me hotspot access without Verizon knowing?
Thank you all in advance for any advice/suggestions! I'm not as tech savvy as I once was so hopefully I didn't just get into a big problem with this phone.

I have the same phone, but with T-Mobile. Since you already have FoxFi (and the key I assume) you should download PDaNet from the playstore or Google June Fabrics & get from there. When you open the app, at the bottom be sure to check the hide usage box & you should be good to go. Use mine sometimes for my laptop thru USB cable for gaming...( Have to because while T-Mobile gives you hotspot in their data plans, they greatly reduced the speed :/ ) Hope that helps!
T-Mobile gives you 3GB to share on standard data (Plus Up gives you 20GB)
(Sprint is my Carrier) Interestingly, I too was able to turn on the hotspot function of my device, however when I connected a device to the network, absolutely nothing would load. The system was being provided with an IP address, just no internet access. I ended up having to root the device to get it working properly. I found that even when attempting to use FoxFi/PDaNet and selecting the "Hide Usage" option, it would continue to block all traffic to the connected device. Not sure if you tested the actual Hotspot function, or just turned it on, but you will definitely want to make sure you test with a connected device.
just for my perspective, ( from a dutch guy) , you guys in the states are not allowed to use the tethering function?
here in the Netherlands it's no problem, never thought of using another hotspot app, on some days i tether about 3 to 5 gb , no problem in my unlimited dataplan, only when i go above 5gb per day then i have to "activate" every next gb per sms ( free of charge) and all that for € 26 /month.
Mmy average data usage would be somewhere around 20 gb per month
