Can't remove default app setting - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I have a Nook NT 16gb, rooted, stock firmware 4.3 running fine. My problem is I can't seem to clear a default app setting. For example video, it is currently set to the B&N my media app which I did accidentally (it originally asked me which one). Well now I can't remove it. I go into the nthidden settings/applications/all/mymedia but it doesn't say it is set as a default. When I KNOW it is, when I click on a movie in question it fires up the mymedia instead of one the other 3 installed. I tried the clear defaults but nope no help.
Any ideas?
Oh I also tried the "default app manager lite" in the google play store, but nope that doesn't show any defaults set either.

Well looks like like I figured it out. The setting was in the file manager app, not a true "global" setting. I cleared the data for the file manager and lo and behold the selection box reappeared.
I also found that if you are in the original B&N stock file manager system (in the library app) if you log press on a file you have the option to clear the default app setting globally for that file type. It wasn't my problem in this case but could be handy if for some reason the settings>-app-all-clearappsdefaultsettingsinquestion didn't work.

HOWTO: Access to the Android Market using your Phone

You'll need to have done the following:
Rooted NC - check NookDevs (or here for Win7) for instructions
Modified NC to allow non-market apps - instructions here
Install Astro File Manager on your phone
Install Hoccer (attached) on both your phone and NC
the instructions are simple:
download an app through the android market on your phone
open Astro
Click Menu
Select Tools
Select Application/Backup Manager
Select your app(s) that you want to backup, and click backup
Press Back
Navigate to /sdcard/backups/apps
Long press on an app
Select Share
Select Hoccer
Run Hoccer on NC
Slide the app over to the NC (instructions are in Hoccer)
Accept Install
How does this work I thought that Haccer used Bluetooth to make it work? does it also use wifi if they are on the same network?

You need to be on the same wifi network for this to work.
Pretty awesome. It worked for me. I installed Amazon, kindle, stocks, exchange rate, msn Talk and Xda apps using the hoccer method and all of them work.
I just keep getting your data must be dragged to near by screen even though they're both on the same wifi and right next to each other. I thought Hoccer needed a location signal to work.
Yep. It took a couple of tries to get the sequence right.
On your phone once you hit send from Astro you get the hoccer context menu and clicking that gives you a screen with a grey box at the center. There is a info bar at the top with "transfer time xxx seconds". Now place you nook close by with hoccer running and flip you finger on the nook screen from right end to left. You get a similar grey box on the nook and then the files get transferred. You should see a linking nearby devices or something to that effect when the grey box appears on the nook.
HTH
Works now. That made a lot more sense. Thanks.
I use dropbox instead of Hoccer (on other devices, haven't tried it on NC yet), unless I'm missing some functionality that I didn't see...?
Yea I also just use dropbox
email the apps with Astro
I did the method above with Astro but instead of using hoccer I just emailed the apps to myself with astro and it seems to works fine. Easier than trying to get hoccer to work I think. Only had trouble with one application that started, ran for five seconds then shut down and I got a message saying "unistall app, restart device, then reinstall app using the android market". Anyone else email the apps to themselves? Is there a good reason not to do it this way?
Thanks
Got it now. You actually have to SLIDE it off 1 phone, then SLIDE it ON TO the nook. Works perfect. Nice find
I installed applanet. Seems to have most of the usual apps
From the market. Any reason no one else is using applanet?
You can install and update from their app just like google
market.

Probably because Applanet allows you to pirate paid apps.

market only showing some apps

i have noticed that alot of the apps i have on my phone do not show up in the market on the nook. actually at most it only shows maybe 15-20 apps per category. i do a search for a app and it dont show up either. flash for instance does not exist in the market. anyone know why
turn the nook to landscape and more will show up. or install the new market.
Sent from my NookColor using XDA App
I don't know why this.is happening, although I am having the same problem. I just started taking the apks from /data on my phone and loading them onto the nook and installing them that way. Its more complicated than using the market, but not a whole lot more complicated.!
Sent from my LogicPD Zoom2 using XDA App
irnoically turning it landscape mode worked as for showing up more apps lol. no clue why but it worked. it still wont find half the apps i have on my phone. like flash wont show up which is kind of important when using the web to its full. can you use astro to instal apps on this like you can on a phone? or is there some different procedure
There's another post in the nook forums which basically states to install "fastweb installer" and "AppBrain App Market". This worked for me and allowed me to find programs like Trillian (but at that price, @#[email protected]#$ that).
I don't think there's an overly usable flash at this point. You'll need to wait for 2.2 from B&N or the NookDevs.
The market on the NOOKcolor, even if it looks like the new market, will only show applications that conform to the Android API 7 API level (2.1 and below). FroYo apps all conform to the Android API 8, so they won't show up on your nook unless you drop FroYo onto it.
Source: http://developer.android.com/guide/appendix/api-levels.html
Using Root Explorer, I changed the System/App folder to R/W and was then able to upgrade the current Marketplace to the newer APK that is floating around the forums. With the new marketplace all apps are showing without needing to turn the screen to landscape.

The problem stated in this thread isn't about the ability to scroll lists in portrait or landscape, rather it is about the ability to see apps that other devices can find.
Two I have seen that immediately come to mind: searching for Firefox, and searching for Trillian (which was a rude way to find out Trillian is both out of beta and now rather expensive, dammit).
Neither will show up on the NC, but show up as the first result on my Droid.
And my NC is also running the latest iteration of Market.

Well, I know flash doesn't show up because it's not (yet) supported on NC. Maybe Firefox and Trillian don't show up for the same reason?

All the apps will show up in nookie. They shouldn't in stock 2.1.
Worked on Nootered and Nookie Froyo .59 with new Market
I had the same issue and followed these insturctions from (i think) the original Nootered thread, but cant remember for sure.
Settings->Applications->Manage Applications-> Market->Clear Cache (NOT DATA!)
then
Settings->Applications->Manage Applications-> Google Services Framework -> Clear Data -> Force Close
reboot
After that SliceIt, Minimalistic Text, and others that were not available previously appear.

Works nicely, but ends up with all the foriegn language apps showing up as well. Any idea how to restrict results on the marketplace by language ?
Thanks this helped me alot! i kept forgetting to reset the Google one.... duh....
dont forget the part where its set to default to only show downloaded apps in the settings so you need to go to menu and filter and show all

Have had nothing but fun playing with the nook. Even formatting my microsd card in the nook and ending up with it not turning on for a day till I repartitioned the storage didn't make me think it was not worth the effort. Compared to a $600 Galaxy Tab the nook is a bargain and well worth all the love bestowed on it IMHO.
fyi just clearing the market cache made some apps i couldn't find before appear. so even if the google framework is non existent in some like mine clearing cache does help
Google framework is not listed on my apps list. Im trying to download games such as angry birds and rocket bunnies but they don't show up

[Q] GBooks & car mount

1. I recently updated to 2.3.6. While on .4, I was able to rename the Google Books apk using ES File Manager and it removed the app. Now nothing will remove it. How do I get rid of it, short of installing a custom ROM? And yes, I am rooted.
2. I have the Samsung car mount. I used to have the Droid Charge, and had the Samsung car mount for that one as well. On the Charge, using the mount would turn the homescreen sideways. The SGSII mount doesn't. Any way to enable this?

Have you tried Titanium Backup? How come you haven't yet heard of it since December?

Do you use a custom Launcher? If so does your custom Launcher force the screen to stay in portrait. I don't own a dock but I never had any issue changing the homescreen to landscape mode on Go Launcher without a dock. To add more convenience.. you could probably use Llama to configure your phone the way you want when the dock is connected.

3. And lastly, someone mentioned setting the default Android car dock app to launch when the phone is docked. Where would I get this app from, and how would I set it to launch when docked instead of the Vlingo app?

Llama would be the answer to this again. There could be something better than Llama for the thing you want to do. But as I have never used dock, I can't say for sure.

1. Titanium backup as the previous user stated
2. Use a different launcher like launcher pro or go launcher, the built in touch wiz launcher does not support landscape mode (although it does support landscape lockscreen)
3. Uninstall the vlingo app with titanium backup and install a new version in the market (the installed one is ooollldd) You will find way more features like a widget that will help you. Not sure where the default setting is though.
Just as an extra note, I absolutely love putting my phone in portrait mode instead of landscape when driving. It lets you see more of whats coming up when using gps, notifications appear normally (instead of only 2 at a time when landscape, and GPS sensor aiding is more accurate.
TiBu doesn't work because GBooks doesn't show up in the list. Edit: Shows up in uninstalled apps in Market. I can't find the icon anymore. I guess the problem fixed itself.
Nope, running the stock launcher. It's weird that the Charge was able to rotate the homescreen. I'm guessing it has something to do with 2.3?
And the Vlingo app doesn't show up in TiBu either, unless it's under a different name.
Additional question: I remember there being a list of all the stock apps that show up in TiBu, saying whether each one could be uninstalled and what detrimental effects it would have. It might've been for the Charge, though. Does that exist for the SGS2?
It's been a while since I saw Google Books on my phone. It should be named just "Books" in app list in TB. Or just use search in TB.

[Q] Launcher default set to Home, no Web button or .apk access

I rooted the Nook Tablet using adb and NookandZergy, installed the Go Launcher EX, and had no problems until an accidental tick of the "default launcher" box. I know there are several Q and A posts on the subject, but none seem to have my particular problem.
- I seem to have no access to the developer setting or anything outside of the standard Nook settings. I don't see a way to access the developer settings, though when I plug the NT into a usb port, the notification for developer mode does come up.
- I have no "web" access, as in, I have no ability to open a web browser. I believe I may have deleted it when installing the root using one of the DOS options. The same goes for the search function.
- Going through the "library" app, I can see the android system UI files, etc., but nothing that could seem to help. I also can't launch any .apk files. The NT cannot read the file and claims it is an unsupported format.
I know I have tgps_launcher installed, at least I'm 95% certain that I do. I cannot seem to access it, unless I'm unaware of all the ways to do so. I think I've provided all the info surrounding this. If I have to nuke it and reroot, I will, though I would like to avoid that option and am unsure how to do so.
Any help is appreciate. Thanks in advance.
How to switch the default home launcher for HomeCatcher once I've already set it?... This link is in my FAQ >> i would suggest you to read it.
~ Veronica
Thanks for the quick reply.
Unfortunately this isn't possible solution, as it requires use of the "search" function. The search function for the NT Home was removed during the rooting process and is unavailable.
For the sake of argument, I tried to look for some sort of search functionality and found nothing. The only option, as I stated before, was to use the "library" app search function. This only displays actual Nook apps, however (Crossword, etc.).

Clever! Unfortunately, that was a no-go too. I went through Nook Friends to get to the google sign-in page, from there I got a mock google.com homepage going and found a download, but none of the ones I tried would work, the psuedo-browser would just crash.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to remove the stock launcher, but my gf actually prefers that interface to the Go Launcher (it's her device, I'm just doing the heavy lifting for her). I think I'm going to cut my losses and do the manual reset from your FAQ. Going with that, are there any launchers that more closely resemble the original Nook Home, or maybe a method of importing some of the icons/functionality of the rooted stuff to the Home? In any case, I'm going to be looking putting AnyCut and/or NT Hidden Settings to have several backups in case this happens again.
Thanks again for your help.

You can use stock launcher and still have an alternative one for when you use it (lets say) and change between them by using homecatcher or another app like home switcher, you may want to go to B&N setting > search> searchable items and check more items there; also in the quick tips section of my FAQ tell you what app to use to add android apps to default nook home launcher.
BTW just checking when i opened the netflix app you get some links there to open browser but if its crashing then you probably have to start from scratch 'cause that's not normal behave anyway.

Had the same thing happen to a friend's NT that I had rooted for him, and besides all that you mentioned "Button Savior" was there but didn't do anything. You are pretty much stuck.
I ended up having to do the 8+ factory resets and re-rooting, and then restoring everything from TiBackup. At least once you have the drivers working on your computer it's really not that big of a deal. I read somewhere that it might be related to "Homecatcher" but not sure about that.

Easy way to add or modify Google account settings

I was just wondering if installing settings from another 4.2.2 device would work at all. As a suspected it was possible. You can edit account settings, Wi-Fi settings, uninstall or see running apps, etc. Not everything works but most missing things from Amazon settings are working.
I tried with this one: sourceforge.net/p/sreborn/code-0/53/tree/system/app/Settings.apk
Just install like any normal app and add shortcut to desktop for easier access.
Hope it helps someone.
Edit: I just realized it works like overwriting Amazon settings. When installed breaks shortcuts bar functionality, but when Kindle is restarted it gets automatically removed and Amazon settings are restored. Still can be a nice workaround for editing settings, dive you can install, add, edit or remove accounts, and restart to have everything working like normal.

Although it still can access language & Keyboard, it do add some new functions that the amazon Settings wont be able to fulfill.
Can anyone make it to co-exist with the amazon setttings? I know it's possible for Fire TV.
