So I'm going to try to start doing some dev work. I feel like my programming and hardware background is sufficient enough that I should be able to pick it up fairly quickly especially with some of the tools I've already found.
Question for the existing devs working on the note...
Are you using a tool like Custom ROM Creator Studio or are you doing it by other means? I looked and there doesn't appear to be a book I could read to help me along like I've done in the past with other languages/etc. Are you doing it directly through a linux box? I have a lot of questions as I am beginning this process but for now I have to go off of what I find through google and here. So any help or direction would be appreciated. Thanks!
Edit: I'm currently reading through the documentation at source.android.com
If you don't get and responses I would suggest searching in the general forum area of xda, I found good info on developing there when I was thinking about it.

Searching through the general forum now. Finding a lot of device specific stuff, specifically HTC. I'll keep looking though. Thanks for the tip!
Still doing my homework...any teachers that can tell me what homework I should be doing would still be nice

I'm setting up my dev environment on my mac now. With some time (and maybe some luck) I can start moving on this. I'm going to have to set up the same environment on my mac at home as well so I can play around there too. I didn't realize that I'd have to set up such a huge virtual machine to do the development on my windows machine. Didn't really want to give up all that space.
I love my note but want that power that those devs have! Back when I was on my Galaxy S II I went nuts trying to find the one ROM that had everything I wanted but could never find that one ROM that suited me. I have to admit that is my driving force for wanting to develop. Obviously I'll be happy to share what I do (if I really am able to do something) and even support what I release because thats what a good dev does
I've been programming since I was 12. Taken some college courses but dropped out because I knew more than the instructors and was bored out of my mind. Ended up with a job at that university! Now I'm just hoping I can pick up the android os like I was able to pick up everything else.
Has anyone tried this out yet?, its on xda front page news
There have been a number of scripts out there that has taken the guesswork out of removing bloatware for a number of Android devices. These scripts, and others like them are being created for more devices all the time, as users and developers gain better understandings of what goes into a ROM and, more importantly, what can be taken out without breaking it. For users carrying the International Samsung Galaxy Note, the freedom of bloat movement has landed on your phones. XDA Senior Member goddamnit has posted a script that will remove that bloatware.
The script is currently only for Windows users, so those with Linux or Mac will have to virtualize in order to use it. Otherwise, the script is pretty interesting. What it does is open an interface where users choose which bloatware items they want to remove. Once finished, the script actually spits out a second script. With this script, users place it somewhere memorable on their SD card, run the new script in terminal, and then reboot. The script will uninstall the selected bloatware, and after the reboot, everything is all peachy. It’s a little complicated, but it is much less time consuming than doing it manually.
Full instructions, download links, and more can be found in the original thread.

I'm appalled by how the OP manage to find a thread in a completely different forum, then comes here and posts in this forum, and thinks that it's the same thing.

Kaishi,
Don't be too hard on the OP. The article on the XDA Portal is mis-titled, adding to the confusion.

It only takes people that don't read, to flash incorrect stuff, and wonder why their phone is bricked. I guess it's a lesson some people can learn the hard way, in that case, flash away. I'd just rather people learn to read before they make a mistake like that so they can save themselves, and others, the trouble.
Do we at least have a list of bloat specifically for the Att note?ive found plenty of helpful info but nothing comprehensive specifically for our phones

Hi, is it possible do port ubuntu on our device?
Sorry for my english and thanks for answers.
Gesendet von meinem Dell Streak mit Tapatalk 2
Canonical's eventual objective is to have the Ubuntu mobile OS on many more devices than the Nexus line by Google. So, to answer your question, it should be possible to port Ubuntu mobile to the Streak, however it may be some time before we see it happen.
Oh, and your English is perfectly fine and understandable. In fact, it's a lot better than what you see from some native speakers!

If it needs cm10 to run it I doubt it'll happen lol
Not really. I believe the Streak can run Jellybean, but the core issue will always be drivers. Without them, nothing is going to happen.
I'd love to see that happen... Also be curios to see how it runs on a sort of dated phone... The Ubuntu Touch Message center is tasty looking! LoL! Wished we could find something like that for Android...

It needs CM10.1 to run and highly doubt that it will ever run on DS5.
@Op, Why have you posted a general topic in dev section? Don't spam this section, if anyone can , he will definately post here, you don't need to ask that it can happen or not. Someone please report this thread.

This makes no sense. You put out a call for someone to report the thread when you could do it yourself?
To the naysayers, the Streak can run ICS. If it isn't going to handle Jellybean, it will be both because of a lack of drivers as well as the possibility of the Streak's system partition being too small to accept Jellybean.
So, we need to find out the size of the system partition, by typing the following commands into a command prompt with the Streak connected to a PC:
adb shell
su
busybox df -h
If the system partition is less than approximately 350MB then Jellybean will not run on the Streak without modifications.

the system partition is 260m ,but it doesn't matter
i had made new partitions in innersd0 , and installed the 2nd os in the new partitions
the size of new partitions could be modified easily
Then that eliminates the minor issue, leaving drivers as the lone obstacle to getting Ubuntu on the Streak. This is the same obstacle that prevents us from getting ICS working properly on the Streak, and until there is some traction in an ICS port, Ubuntu is not going to happen.

You are really one of your kind!
Can't you understand that i was asking someone to do it because i was online through my phone and fyi you can report a thread through xda's app ..
If you want to continue this general discussion, open up a thread in general section and continue your talking there, this section is for development and not for general discussions . A guy spammed this section and you are supporting him. Reported!
I don't use the XDA app, but whether I do or not has no bearing on the ease of reporting a post. However I neither consider his post to be spam nor do I believe it inappropriate for this subforum. I suspect no one else in this thread, except you, cares one way or another.
Since you reported me, I don't have to tell you to go ahead and waste your energy, do I.
What I can't understand, is why this Question is in Development.
Com'on people, read the rules before you sign on.
Development is for "Works", like Roms, Kernels, Roots, Hacks and such. To post in the Dev section, you better be attaching something worthwhile One could say "Hey, I heard OX10 can be ported to...". If you don't have some code.... see the following....
Otherwise, it gets moved to Q & A or General...
Thread moved.
MD
A rhetorical question you ask. This is only speculation, but perhaps the OP thought to spur such development by asking the question. That's why I personally didn't have an issue with the OP posting the thread in development. But, my opinion on the appropriateness of the thread's location is irrelevant.

Why don't you understand that questions don't belong in development section?
There are several OS out there, so should we create a new thread for every OS asking " Can this OS be ported to DS 5 ?"
GENERAL discussion are not for development section!
There's a general section for that!
If someone gets something working on DS5, he/she will definately post it here(XDA), a question will not make that OS.
We all know that we hardly have a working ICS(4.0.4), so it's impossible to get ubuntu working on DS5 since its based on CM10.1 ( 4.2.2) , the bitter truth.
You are quite an experienced member and still you are supporting a spam thread instead of helping in cleaning the dev section. This is my last post on this thread and even after this if you don't understand then can't help with it.
BTW thanks Moscow desire!
Actually Ubuntu Touch is based off of Android 4.1.2

Which still leads to the issue of drivers. Without drivers, any discussion of porting Ubuntu Touch is nothing more than wishful thinking. This device still doesn't have a properly working ICS port because there are no driver sources to be able to create proper drivers.
At this point, I'm bowing out of this discussion. I'm starting to repeat myself.

Thats alright,
While browsing on my phone, I recently read a thread about developing your first rom. However, I forgot to subscribe to the thread, now I cannot find it anywhere. I remember it being multiple posts and using a less common device as its example phone, as well as more colloquial language. Any help would be appreciated. I've looked through quite a number of forums with a multitude of search terms, so how I cannot locate this thread again is beyond me.

Rather than being a muppet, did you actually bother to look at the results? Searching via Google using the "site:forum.xda-developers.com" tag is almost always a better bet than trying to use the XDA search engine.
Using the information you gave brought in some great results in the first page - if you can't build a custom ROM based on those instructions then you should just give up before you try.
As for the "less common device", three of those threads are for the Galaxy Ace Plus, the Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos i9082 and the LG Optimus 3D - none of which are particularly common devices.
I agree that the results are extremely helpful, but I am looking for that specific thread as it had a link to a ROM I wished to attempt to port.

You'll just have to try and give as much detail as possible - what was the device, the ROM name, the Developer name, the date of the original post - whatever you can possibly remember about it.
Unfortunately I cannot recall any identifying information, simply that there were quite a few posts and that there was a post in which he explained a bunch of commands and which ones would be useful. He also had pictures that I believe had paint level illustrations. And something about green and 420 comes to mind as well.

Searching for the word "root" (without quotes) in this topic yields all threads with the word root in them. Despite that if you glance at the titles you will find on page 1 a thread that asks the question (and has an answer). Page 2 shows 3 results.. Pages beyond 3 show other results.
So the search works but only as far as when people actually look (and take the time to read) for answers. Search results are also more effective when people use proper thread titles. I will admit the latter makes searches a lil more cumbersome because some people need to learn how (or have simply failed) to properly name the threads they make.
To help with the search results here's the ones I found on page 1 and page 2:

Wow, so nice to see no one gets satire that they go out of their way to prove themselves.
Look, I know there isn't root, I was just pointing out that threads like these are a dime a dozen. Facepalm
I'm just saying that on top of a search function there are about 10 threads about root for our phones; not being able to, question of whether or not it's possible, and a kind of waiting/official thread about root for our phones. It's not satire I was just telling him to read through the forum to search for the answer to his question instead of making yet another "is there root" thread. People just want a quick answer instead of reading. I don't see what him posting proof has to do with it, just seems like an extension of the banter. I'm not dogging on him or you, so don't take it to heart.
Also you can search by thread title if you select advanced under search options.

I was going to say the same thing. I have seeing these and finding out it is a question
This is the exact reason I didn't want to purchase this device. All I want is V4A.
Oh well, this device is amazing!
Well as of right this second there is not.. but to all who say there will never be for the U.S. model, i emphatically direct you to the Galaxy Note 9 threads where there is a serious developer Elliwigy has successfully rooted the U.S Note 9 using the exact same qualcomm chipset. And he states that his method has been tested by several developers on other samsung devices ... so to answer your question Yes root is possible.. but currently not stable nor is there a fool proof path to success. But Elliwigy has broken the ground necessary for a possible future root.
Link to an article on this:

Link to thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...s-recoveries--other-development/root-t3927413
Interesting to see a method to install root was found with the factory binary (not the same as what we are using right now). It may lead into a root method if someone can find a way to make the proof of concept possible on the binaries we are normally using..
Worth keeping tabs on, I got the link bookmarked to keep watch on it. Who knows someone might find a way to crack this golden egg
