Phone encryption - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello All,
I am using a SGS3 with latest CM11 nightly on it. This is a company phone. They are asking now for encrypting my phone. I know there is a possibility under Settings > Security > Encrypt phone. In my opinion it is not working. I did a couple of time the following:
1. I went to Settings > Security > Encrypt phone.
2. To activate the button, I need to plug in the charger, because for the long estimated time.
3. It asked me to protect the phone with a PIN code before starting the process, I give it.
4. When I start the process of encryption I get the drawing of the little Android roboter and that's it.
In my opinion nothing happens. I can close the process with no message, nothing. The only thing what happens is, there is nothing in the notification bar after starting. Has somebody an idea what I do wrong? Now I made a factory reset and it is in the 'show roboter state' now since hours. BTW, I have a 32GB sdcard installed. Does it really take that long?
Please help me. It would be bad, if I need to remove the awesome work of Malag.
Kind regards, Andreas

Phone encryption is not working on many CM 11 devices like SGS3.
You have to read the "Known Issues for i9300" page, therefore I'm one of the few users who keep it constantly updated
Now I don't know if your phone is untouched by this buggy process, but to solve any consequent anomaly you have to do a Titanium Backup of important data (not a Nandroid backup, because it preserve the encryption!) and do a "full wipe".
Yes, a full wipe.
Then reinstall rom and everything you're needed.

[Q] process com.android.systemui has stopped

Hu guys,
i was googling for some hours but couldnt find a soltuion to this. Everytime i install ANY app on my new sgs2 and reboot I get the following error message:
The application Status Bar (process com.android.systemui) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
I get the message twice and then the bar is gone. When i dont press force close I see the bar just working perfectly in the background.
Only solution is factory reset, but as soon i install apps (no matter which) i start getting the same problems.
Thinking of returning the phone

Can you post what's in the 'About Phone's screen, what network you're using and where you bought your phone.

Try a reflash as i only got that problem when i pushed systemui.apk and didnt reboot straight after. Sounds like a corruption somewherw
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
the problem was when ever i made the inital configuration i ticked the box to sync my google config. my google config was from my old sgs1 which must have corrupted my phone. i reset the phone and unticked the google config option and i dont have the problem anymore.
Ahhh!!! I got the same problem!!! Is there any way to fix this? Anyone?
marcie82, i'm having the same problem and your post was the only post I found that addresses the issue. When you wrote that you've reset your phone, did you mean you reflashed it?
I just got the same phone from amazon.. and it worked fine when i first opened it but then the task bar disappeared..
i reset it back to original factory settings.. it's downloading my old apps now.. i'll keep on debugging this thing until something comes up
A buddy of mine had a similar issue, for him it was com.android.phone that kept randomly crashing, sometimes mid-call and thereby terminating the call.
We tried factory reset and other things as well, nothing helped.
So we ended up re-flashing the FW (he was on KE2 and we flashed a stock KE7), that is now ~2 weeks ago and he never had any crashes anymore since then.
So, long story short, try reflashing (a maybe newer) FW with odin, factory once more (if the ROM doesn't do it while flashing) and see if it gets any better.
Also check the CSC setting, we set it to generic XEU after the flash - use w/e suits your region/FW.
installing applications
i noticed that as soon as i go to google market and click on the 'my apps' button.. it starts downloading all the apps i previously purchased automatically.. is there a way to prevent that from happening?
Settings -> Privacy
"Back uo my data" and "Automatic restore"
untick at least the auto-restore, or the auto-backup too, maybe that helps.
I got both disabled by default (first thing I set after a wipe) and it never tried to restore my apps by itself (yay for AppBackupAndRestore ).
could it be a specific application?
debugging progress: i noticed that it's not installing *any* app that causes this task bar thing disappearing (at least not in my case):
i restored my phone to factory default.. then i disabled my automatic restore and defaults. then i installed only one app from my very long list of apps. (for some reason i had to do it from my 3g connection and not wifi.. but that's a different problem)..
anyways i installed it and it worked just fine! i restarted my phone just to make sure and the task bar is still there!
i'm gonna go through my apps ans install them one by one.. i know it's a painstaking process but hey i gotta give back to the android community

A trick I used in a similar situation was the following :
Use Titanium Backup. U make a backup of the application that has the problem. Then u wipe the data of this application and then u restore the data.
For me that trick miraculoussly solved that problem ...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1162680
Had the same problem with not working phone/contacts, freezing like "process com.android.phone - Force Close" etc.
I realized the error happens only after upgrading for example to KG, than after a short period making a backup of the whole system, downgrading to KF, then restoring with Titanium Backup.
It restores the whole system, including settings, and accounts and so on. This might be the problem. It seems nobody realized that the MODEM and PHONE is upgraded too, so there might be some components not compatible with earlier versions.
Solution: restore only user apps & data, not the system settings. Use a separate app for SMS, call logs, contacts or calendar. Do a cache wipe and then a fact reset from MENU+UP+POWER (restore menu), then reinstall your choice of firmware, restore user apps&data with Titanium or anything preferred, then enter/restore everything else manually. No problem when upgrading.
Tested, had 3 sleepless nights, but works for me.
Noob in need of androidized kindle help!
Hey ya'll,
I just rooted and downloaded ics4 onto my kindle. It was working great all day and I used the gba emulator for android and everything.
Now, for some reason I keep getting the error "unfortunately, system UI has stopped working".The tool bar on the bottom of the screen with the home and back buttons aren't even there anymore. I have rebooted and gone into TWRP and done a system reboot and everything yet that keeps happening. Why do you think that is ?
caused by Titanium

I am sure the problem caused by restore system data by Titanium. I have tried four times today. Factory reset and flash and restore. Only when I restore system data caused this problem.
Why resurrect a two year old thread?
For information, restoring apps WILL NOT cause instability......restoring data ESPECIALLY data from system apps WILL.
RULE OF THUMB......
If you are upgrading your android OS (eg...ICS to JB).....
DO NOT restore system app data....ever
For user apps....if the app runs as soon as you open it, you *should* be ok to re-install the data.
If the app requires the downloading of 'additional files' on first run, DO NOT re-install as this data is likely to be OS version specific......
My wife says I'm a phone geek....She's probably right
Due to an update of an Xposed module, I had badly corrupted my systemui. The phone was totally unusable, and I could only press the OK button notifying the stopped event at startup.
Lucky me, I still had not updated to 4.4.3. Via Skipsoft Android Toolkit I updated to the last Android release, and my systemui got fixed. I did not choose to do a complete wipe, so I actually maintained my previous apps. In relation to root, I did not loose it, but I had to reinstall SuperSU to get the non-official apps working again.
I hope this helps somebody else in my same condition, with no need to do a system wipe!

Hey everyone, I just had this same problem pop up onto my phone while I was checking my messages. Ive never rooted my Motorola Droid Razr HD and the power button is jammed at the moment as well. Is there a way around this problem or is this phone done for?
Maybe you should try increasing the heapsize in the build.prop file, the no. of notifications in the status bar causes this crash. if you want to know more about the heapsize etc. google for this crash in cyanogenmod fourms.

[Q] Logsprovider, Twlauncher and others error looping: please how can I save data?

Hello, I'm Italian so my English is not very good.
Please I would like to ask you if somebody can help me with this problem.
I have a GT-i9100 with Andorid 2.3.3. The device is not rooted and I kept the original software from the day i bought the phone.
When I turn on my phone I have this error message looping:
"The application LogsProvider (com.sec.android.provider.LogsProvider process)has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again"
And, if I stay on the home screen, also:
"The application TwLauncher (com.sec.android.app.twlauncher process)has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again"
And occasionally I also get some others Force Closure, as:
Android process.media
Task Provider (process com. Android.providers)
Message (process com.android.mms)
IM (com.sec.android.im process)
AP Mobile (com.sec.android.widgetapp.apnews process)
Social Hub (com.seven.Z7 process)
Somebody told me that if I do a factory reset I'll probably solve the problem.
But this is what I am writing: since I am disable, sometimes I don't write by hand and I record voice recordings (with the standard voice recorder of the phone). I have some very important data on the phone and since they were recent I have no backup.
There are mainly voice recording (took with the standard recorder app) and some notes I took with an app called Note Everything that I would not like to lose.
Is there a way of saving this data?
UPDATE: Here a video of the problem:
Some additional information:
- the phone also display the icon of "memory almost full". So I can't install from the computer version of google play another launcher, because it would probably not install for no memory
- the phone also crashes after few minutes (sometimes soon, sometimes later)
- when I turn on again the phone, it is allways on the same home screen (I have 8 desktop home screen, it is always on the fifth)
- I have no SD card
- I could go on settings --> applications --> manage applications --> LogsProvider --> Clear data. The error of "LogsProvider" stops appearing, but if the phone crashes next time it returns, and if the phone does not chrash, if I go on home screen I still have all the others errors
- I could go on settings --> applications --> manage applications --> and I deleted some apps. When I turn off and on again the phone, the apps looks again there
- If i connect the phone with the computer with usb, Kies keeps telling "connecting"
- If I put the phone in Debug Mode, or in USB Mode, in My Computer I can see for some seconds the icon of the mass storage device (for example "K:"), but If I try to open it on my computer, I have an error like "the device is not ready", or the icon disappear
Thank you very very much in advance.
There are many apps to backup your data, try the below app to backup your apps data, you can later restore it after a factory reset.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.infolife.appbackup&feature=search_result
and regarding the voice recording. IF you simply record the voice and play it via any music explorer, then it would be saved in your internal sd and it will be safe after a factory reset.
+1 on bala.....well i had this prblm on my sgs1 and i dint do a backup but simply factory reset an for few weeks the phone was fine but again it started ..but then i flashd the same rom using odin an tht has a fix uptill now....cheerz
Thank bala_gamer and thanks rocky23, but unfortunately it looks like I can't install this app nor neither other app because of two reasons:
1) I can't access to the Google Play Store, because I don't have a desktop shortuit, and if I try to go passing through the apps page Twlauncher crashes and returns to the desktop
2) As I told in the post, phone says "memory almost full" so I can't install other apps
Any other ways of saving this data?
PS: As for the voice recording, good to know that with a factory reset they will probably be safe, thanks!
Since you're not rooted, I can't see any way you can fix this without losing your data.
My daughter is also limited to voice-only stuff, I rooted my SGS1 immediately before I gave it to her and back it up for her daily - not much use to you I know, but rooting/backups are a must, IMO.
She also uses Note Everything - as do I - and it always has survived a factory reset/full wipe for us, data's stored on the sd card, not in the system partition.
You've given all the info anyone could want, hope someone with more knowledge than me can think of a solution.
Good luck - I'll try and think more myself
Edit - not backed up via Google sync by any chance? If not, can you access it via Settings, or does TW crash on you every time?
Thanks also to you B3311.
I've checked with my fried who has the same phone and in fact all the voice recordings are stored in sdcard/audio. I've also found the directory of Note Everything inside sdcard. So, if this files will be kept, most of data that I care will be safe.
I have again some last few question, I give them a number so the post looks more clear.
1) As for Google sync, I have it enabled. On my computer I can see my calendar and my contacts, is there any other thing that Google sync backups?
2) So, apparently the only thing that I can now do is to do a "factory reset".
It is OK to go put the phone in Recovery Mode (Volume Up + Home + Power buttons ) and than select "factory reset"? Is the "factory reset" the same option that "wipe user data", or it is different?
As you can se It is the very first time I do a factory reset (and also that I enter in recovery mode), and I am a little bit worried that something goes wrong.
3) If all the data that is on /sdcard will be kept, so what kind of data I will lose? I suppose Contacts (1) , SMS (2), Calendar data (3), Apps (4) and Phone options (5) will be deleted, but is there any other type data that will be deleted?
Thank you everybody for your patience and your support dealing with this problem!!
please last question
Last question: in this tutorial (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108499) concerning how to deal with a boot loop (which is not my case) it is said to make a "wipe user data" and than to flash a stock ROM.
Do you think that, in my case, make a factory reset would directly fix the problem, or I also have to flash?
Than you very much!

Very Short Video Explaining Everything!
Hello,
I've found out that when I choose reboot from the recovery mode, I get this error:
E: copy_kernel_file :: Can't open /data/log/recovery_kernel_log.txt
To explain you the problem I have with the phone, I made this very short video:
Having this error, is it safe to select wipe data/factory reset?
I summarize: I have some very important data on the phone, in particular some voice recording and some data took with the app Note Everything that I would really like to save.
What can you suggest me to do?
Thank you very much again.

Hi Sun90 and thanks. Unfortunately KIES keeps telling me "connecting" but does't connect.
You can find all the info in my first post, please see "Some additional information" here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25577449&postcount=1
What can you suggest me to do to save data?
Having the kernel error, if I factory reset is it possible to have even a more serious problem?
Thanks.

To resolve it: From your homescreen click menu, then Settings, Applications, Manage Applications. This screen will have tabs running across the top, click the ALL tab. Then scroll down to LogsProvider, select the app, then Force Stop and Clear Data. After that you should be good to go.

This is the solution.
You might not need to do a factory reset, I just cleared cache partition and it worked.

[Q] "Process System Not Responding"

Hi guys,
Wonder if anyone can shed a light why this happens. It's been going on for the last few months – Originally I thought I'd wait and see if the problem resolves by itself. But seems to get slightly worse over time now.
I am currently: Rooted & Unlocked
Problem: System hangs after reboot at home screen with message “Process System Not Responding” - with option to wait or terminate the process – Whatever option is chosen, ATP will reboot itself.
Frequency: Unpredictable – But once the message appears after switching it on, ATP will reboot itself 2 to 4 times before I can use it again.
I had done a lot of searches, but there doesn't appear to be any solution / or anyone knows why this is happening. One useful comment I found recently said this may be due to some processes starting before they are meant to during boot up sequence – but no details were given.
What I had tried (based on numerous suggestions after searching the net):
Wipe Dalvik Cache / Caches
Clear “Media Storage” and “Google Framework Services” data
Remove my accounts (currently I have two accounts registered in my ATP) and re-register the accounts.
Remove all the widgets from home screen
Hard reset / Factory Reset
Finally – Multiple different combinations of the above
Getting quite frustrated here.
Wonder if anyone can help please?
Thank you in advance.
[Q] "Process System Not Responding" researching and even downgrading to .15 --> .21, I think the problem is finally solved.
Allegedly "Process System is Not Responding" may be caused by process(es) that hangs or take too long to complete during the boot up sequence. So I uninstall blindly one program at a time - and it appears that Cachemate might have caused it.
Prior to this, every 3-4 normal boots, were followed by 2-3 "Process System is Not Responding" until a normal boot followed. I am now 48 hours problem free. Hopefully it will stay this way.
Edit (11/06) - Ok, spoke too soon. Got the message again after 24hours of use and after roughly 15 normal reboots (I switched ATP off/on these many times to make sure the problem was well and truly gone). The Cachemate could just be a red herring then. However there appear to be less in term of frequency. I noted that the message came on after I watched a video (3hours long video - 600mb in size) and rebooted ATP. Tried disabling media storage (no real logic here, I thought I just gave it a go) - but the problem is still there. So this evening, I reflashed the asus .21 rom --> downgrade to .15 --> reroot --> upgrade back to .21 (again to real logic here, thought I give it a go).
I can't think what else to do. I wonder if large hosts file (mine is 8mb) could cause the problem or the wallpaper I use that is stored under /sdcard - but again, the problem/message only comes up randomly.
Edit (13/06) - Finally managed to narrow down the problem. Everytime a large hosts file (mine is about 8mb) is created, the problem comes (faithfully everytime). And when the original smaller hosts file is restored - problem is gone entirely.
Any input on workaround is very much appreciated.
alright i fixed it on my phone. i did a full wipe. tell me if i need to explain how to do this. reflashed the ROM and gapps. when i went through the setup the first time there was an option to restore from google. it was checked by default. i left it checked. same problem... system process not responding... wiped and started over and reflashed ROM and gapps. unchecked restore google and it didnt come back. phone hasnt crashed since. the problem lies within the wifi passwords restore. the problem started when i was trying to start wifi. i dont know where to report the bug or i would. good luck and any questions? just quote this so i get an email and ill try to explain if this didnt make sense. hope it helped. if it did consider buying my buddy a beer who is a dev and needs a new computer. http://johntriger-development.yolasite.com/

[Q] "ussd code running"

I have a problem on my Galaxy S3, running android 4.1.1 on Vodafone network in the UK. It is not rooted.
I want to make sure the phone is unlocked before buying a sim card for use in France
Using the stock dialer, "*#7465625#" gives me "ussd code running" followed by "Unknown command".
Looking around elsewhere, others have blamed it on Mobile Tracker, which as far as I can see, I don't have. The only solution I have seen is a factory reset, which is a scary prospect for me, not having any idea what that entails. And then reinstalling apps one by one until the culprit is found. I have also seen comments about ussd security issues. I am slowly heading out of my depth here (I know my way round windows quite well, but phones are unknown territory for me,).
I am hoping some clever souls on this forum might be able to help. Is this a known, and solved, problem? Or is a factory reset my best bet?
If I have to reset, I know where the reset is in the menu system - on the same page as a checked box saying backup. So...does does the back up happen automatically or when I press reset or have I got it completely wrong? If not, which files do I need to save away from the phone? What happens to things like contacts I can remove the external SD card, so that won't be an issue. How do I reinstall the apps, particularly the ones I have already paid for?
I have spent most of the afternoon tried to get a handle on this and my head is spinning now.
Any help at all, would be very warmly received.
Polly
1st solution : root your phone, very easy procedure then you can flash the same stock ROM from sammobile.com to become unrooted again without wiping/resetting your phone.
2nd solution: download APPSAVER from market for free, then you can save all the applications you have downloaded but not the DATA (for example you can save the game itself but not the progress you have achieved)
as for the contacts, go to the contacts folder - menu import/export - export to usb storage and voila all your contacts will be written in a single file that you can import after you reset your phone
as for SMS, you can download "SMS Backup & Restore" from market for free to backup then restore your SMSs
after you perform the above, go to Settings - Back up and reset - Factory data reset and your phone will be back as you received it.
On the other hand if the phone is locked you can always unlock it using Voodoo S3 on the Play Store, it can sim-unlock your device if you're rooted of course.
Great reply, thank you!
Rooting...a bit loth to do that while still under guarantee and at my level of experience. One day I will get hold of an old phone and try it with that first.
Appsaver - what a brilliant app, thank you again. If it is one particular app that is the problem (and that is the sense that I get from elsewhere), then I can use this to back up my apps, uninstall them all, check for the ussd error. If it has disappeared, then reinstall apps one at a time until the error reappears. If it hasn't disappeared, then I can go the reset route, after backing up contacts and SMS.
Thank you so much for your help.

Lenovo Tab 2 A10-70 - I think I bricked my tablet?

Hello all! I registered real quick in hopes this community could help me out with something.
So quite a while ago I rooted my Lenovo Tab 2A 10-70 tablet with KingoRoot in order to generate a logcat file. That went fine and dandy, and then I disabled some misc. apps (like Kindle for Android). I can't remember exactly what I messed with, so please bear with me.
The issue is that a couple of days ago I tried taking an image with my tablet with the default Camera app, when suddenly it started giving me some errors with generating thumbnails. Worse yet, my computer could not open these and they were seemingly corrupted. The camera started acting up as well, and claimed that "Unfortunately, Gallery has stopped working." whenever I attemted to record. I tried clearing the cache based on some recommendations through others and force stopping the app, and this seemingly worked for one recording/picture, but then would stop again. I found deleting the DCIM folder entirely from my Android's Internal Storage helped, but it'd quickly corrupt again.
Frustrated, I asked a friend for help on what to do figuring he had more knowledge in Android devices then me. He suggested I tried another camera app, but I couldn't get Google Play to download anything to the internal storage or my SD card, despite clearly having enough space.
As a last resort, I tried updating through the official "Updates" app to see if that would help me, and it claimed there was a new ROM available. I tried that, but then suddenly it failed and now my tablet seems to bricked? I can now only get the "No command." screen to show up.
I've tried using the following options while on this screen:
- reboot system now - this takes me back to this menu after it shows a Lenovo screen twice, which makes me think it's having trouble booting into Android itself.
- Apply update from ADB/sdcard - Both did nothing for fairly good reason, but I checked these options out of curiosity.
- wipe data/factory reset - Tried these the very first time I got to this screen after a failed installation. It seemingly hasn't worked for me.
- wipe cache partition - Tried this a bit later, but got similar results.
- root integrity check - Scanned a bunch of .apk files, but then later threw up some errors after that was done and said the check failed.
So, in short, I'm stuck in this menu and I'm getting kind of frustrated/scared. Is there anything that I can do to save the tablet at this point? Is there something I did wrong that might have bricked it? I'm not terribly experienced with Android, so I'd love to hear some thoughts from others! I'll gladly take anyway to restore the tablet back to a point where it can actually boot into the OS, and I understand I'd lose some data doing any sort of clean install.
Thank you!

Thank you!

Quite a late reply, but thank you! That ended up working quite nicely! I upgraded my tablet from Lollipop to Kitkat too, which seems to be working a bit better app performance wise for me.
