With all the praise for the solid construction of this device I was surprised to hear mine rattle slightly when setting it down on the sofa.
Try holding your phone in your right hand and tap the top edge at the rear with your right index finger.
Does yours rattle too?
Dont have the device yet, but its not surprising to hear that. Although Samsung has done a wonderful job with utilizing space to the maximum, it is plastic after all.
Its surprising to me. A top end device like this should not rattle!
i'd bet any amount of money its the auto foxus mechanism in the cmaera lense. every phone i've owned does this when i set it down on a hard surface. my n1 which is solid does it as well.
only way to prove it is attempt to take a photo and shake the phone to simulate the rattle. while the camera turns on the auto focus mechanism, it is no longer "loose" and the rattle will briefly go away. once the photo is snapped the focus mechanism goes back to idle/loose position, so it will then rattle.
Only rattle i have is not a rattle just the noise of hitting hard plastic .Same noise on SGS1

I couldn't hear anything on mine aside from the sound of my finger tapping the plastic. Could it be your back cover? It might not be fully on. I carried mine around for a few hours before realising one of the plastic clips wasn't fully in place.

I think you're right. I've done what you suggested with varying success in changing the pattern of the rattle when constantly tapping the phone whilst touching different areas of the viewfinder.
Ok, maybe this is the auto focus mechanism but is it right and if it is why does it affect some and not others?

I get the same with the back cover off. If I apply gentle pressure to the camera lens it does lessen the rattle a little.
I know we don't go round tapping our phones as a rule but I'm not happy at this.
Just checked mine and no rattle here

More than likely (as with nearly all audio / visual imperfections people find) is that some people have better eyes or ears, or a much quieter environment. Try going to downtown Tokyo and even hearing your phone, let alone a rattle. Meanwhile up in the Drakensburg mountains here, I could probably hear a stone dropping at over a kilometer away.
Less likely is that your phone has a looser camera than others - there are always imperfections in manufacturing, and you might have hit the bad end of the spectrum with the lenses being too small for the holder. If this is the case, a replacement would definitely fix it.
But more than likely it's the first case.
I appreciate what you are saying Ryan but in all honestly, I think it my case it's the second scenario.
I don't go looking for faults but I do expect a premium device with a premium price tag to feel like such. This rattle totally spoils it for me and with a few other niggling little doubts I had about the phone (mainly personal preference) this was the push I needed to prompt me to return the handset.
I won't be getting a replacement. Don't get me wrong, the phone is a very nice phone and is probably the best Android out there currently but again, personal preference and a few little niggles means it's not for me.
Great for those that have no rattle, enjoy your devices as I am sure you will.
It was fun while it lasted anyway

Sorry to hear about this 'rattle' on your unit...why not try at least another unit to see if that 'rattle' is also present there, especially if you think you might have gotten a defective unit...
You seem a bit to be quick at dismissing the device. Almost like you just waited to find a reason to get rid of it.
In any case, I hope I don't have that problem on mine.

well to me its normal since i've explicitly noticed the rattle in every phone i've owned, and learned a while back that it was the auto focus mechanism. so it all depends on your personal opinion i guess, but my hunch is that if exchanged every other one would do it as well. who knows though....

No not at all. There are a few things that I don't like about the SGS2 that had me considering returning it before I even noticed the rattle - this is just what cemented my decision to return it. As said previously though, the annoyances I have with it are down to personal preference and comparison to other devices I have owned.
I'm not in the 'business' or picking faults with something for the sake of it, regardless of brand, I just want quality when I pay a quality price and to me at least this rattle makes the whole thing feel cheap.
Remember those two important words, personal and preference!

I guess I see your point.
I was hoping it was a defective unit rather than a general problem with the SGS2 since I hadn't heard about the rattling.
If I noticed something like that on mine, I probably would be bothered too.
yes i agree too. if it's a defective unit, just exchange with another one while it's still under warranty.
just keep that in mind. there are no other devices out there that can match with SGII at this point. What is your second choice, if I may ask?

Good question! I don't have one. It would possibly have been the Nexus S but for the irreversible problems with freezing and lock ups - mainly for the feel / size of the handset rather than its features.
I think I will wait a while now ...

metal back cover will be released anytime soon. i was thinking about ordering one when i get my SGII in US.
Hey guys,a question about the SGS2 popped into my head earlier that I had forgotten to care about.
How durable is the GS2?I mean without silicon cases etc.It depends on the quality of the plastic used.
I know that the screen is pretty durable for sure(isn't it Gorilla Glass?),but what about the rest of the phone. From what I've heard, the original Galaxy S was pretty durable(heard stories of phones flying out of cars' windows etc),and my current Desire HD is really durable("really" is there because I have personal experience from the phone, not because it's more durable than the GS or something).
I intend to take care of my phone(Who doesn't take care of a 600 euro phone? ),but you cannot never be too sure!
Any feedback WITHOUT FLAMING OR HATING INCLUDED (taking precautions here as some people tend to defend the awesomeness of Sammy's phones with far too much zeal) is welcome.
Still eagerly waiting for the phone to arrive!
A lot of people think plastic automatically equates to bad build quality. Well, the Galaxy S II is proof that isn't the case -- it doesn't creek and there are numerous reports of people dropping theirs with no marks.
To sum up - does it feel as tough in the hand as my old HTC Leo? No. But does that mean it isn't? Not necessarily. I have had mine for a month with no build quality issues and long may it continue.
Durable = lasting in spite of hard wear or frequent use
So time alone will tell one month most definitely will not .
jje
Well,I am happy to see you two guys here(You ermmm...answered in a not so wanted manner in my other thread, remember?).Perhaps we started wrong, but never is too late now,is it?
I never said that plastic means build quality is bad. It's just more likely to mean so than aluminium is,because there are various qualities of plastic and no one can guarantee(is it spelled like that?I'm studying atm so my English is a bit out of the ordinary, too many mistakes, sorry) that a manufacturer uses high quality plastic.
However it doesn't need to scream quality. My father has a Panasonic DSLR which is mainly(if not completely) mad of plastic. It has fallen on soil, water, rocks(in a cave-holy sh*t that man! ) and other surfaces numerous time and there is only a tiny(Like the tip of a nail) piece broken from the lens' cover.Nothing serious considering it's been going through that stuff for about four years now!
What I wanna say is that the GS2 might prove far better than most of us believe.
Did you guys own a GS1?What are your experiences from it?I mean apart from the usual problems with the device, like gps.
Again, thanks for your replies guys!I hope we will be cooperating and understanding each other better in the future!
(I hope I don't sound like a politician,but we have to be polite,don't we? )

Don't say one month won't tell anything.Give a phone to my sister. If it survives the month,it's most likely extremely lucky or extremely well made!
Like the original sgs id say its a lot more durable than it feels- Ive droped mine already, but didnt get a scratch
Yes i droped mine within 10mins of opening the box lol it bounced but no marks chips cracks scratches nothing. On the other hand i droped my desire hd when i had it and that gained a dent in the top both droped in my living room so they both took the same tumble and hit the same floor.

Hard to say, wait some weeks for more stories to develop
I'd say since there aren't many (any?) people screaming "ONOES IT BROKE ALREADY", it's probably made pretty well.
If it had truly bad build quality there would surely be some people complaining about it by now!
Once I got mine, I thought it felt like a toy and got a case for it immediately, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be able to survive a drop. It just means my financial paranoia got the better of me

Hopefully I'm getting mine tomorrow but If you look at the situation in which you'll drop the GSII logically.
(Correct me if I'm wrong, btw )
If you drop it, it's lighter, meaning it has less momentum on it, meaning that there's less force acting on the phone when it goes "smashing" into the ground and is there's less force, it's more likely to survive.
OFC not sure how that situation will take place in real life though.

Well,in a similar scenario my DHD kinda damaged the floor more than the floor damaged it.
Well, comparing the two isn't really that much fair.See,the way I see it,the biggest advantage of the plastic used on with the Galaxy series is that the reduced weight of the phones makes the force with which they hit the ground, should they fall, much smaller. And,using common sense, this means less damage.
That is my opinion though!

One more question guys...
How is Samsung with their warranties?Do they honour it as they should? And how do they treat people with rooted devices?
HTC is well known for the fact that they are quite good with their warranties so,coming from a long line of HTCs,I'd like to know about Samsung too.
Thanks!

It feels fragile, but like someone just said the amount we've paid for them does instill some paranoia. I had my first test yesterday. In a Case-Mate Tough Case, the phone fell out of my hand, dropped arrow straight vertically and landed on one top corner. It then flopped on its face. This was on a concrete floor. I know the case saved it, but regardless the shock it took was pretty severe. So it's not frail and I'm now a Case-Mate fan.

Are you buying sim-free? And I haven't heard any rants about warranty, so I'm assuming it's good.
Plastic definitely has it's advantages. When you think of all the shattered iP4's, and the comments above about dented aluminum HTC's it might be a blessing. That and of course weight has me thinking maybe the Sensations hand feel might not be so great when it's out of your hands....and into gravity's
I dropped mine 12 days ago.
Took it out of my pocket whilst hurrying to get to a meeting I was late for, juggled it, managing to launch it to about 5ft in the air before it landed totally flat, face down on concrete with some small stones scattered across it.
That shattered the glass and broke the LCD screen. NO damage or marks anywhere else. It has been in for repair (£90 quoted) with the official Samsung service centre in Luton since Saturday 21st. Samsung are taking their time sending the replacement.
Just a little bit annoying!

Yeah so a long while ago I once trashed a phone by getting thrown in a pool. I was able to exchange the phone because I was in my 30 days from Verizon but I decided that I should probably cover the water indicators in all of my devices.
Yeah I'm swindling a company but try not to remind me about it lol.
I know one is on top of the battery but might there also be one in the phone that the store would check?
EDIT: There's also one behind the back cover of the phone. Top Right underneath the hole to the right of the headphone jack.
How do you cover them? What do you use?

Tape will usually work.
Why not just keep it from getting wet in the first place?
I understand the instance where you got thrown in the pool, but I'm talking about from now on. (somebody else would have been paying for a replacement phone in that scenario, not scamming Verizon)
It may also get an STD someday, so you should get a condom for it too?

Well ofc I'm not keeping my phone in my pocket anytime I'm near water again but there are instances in life where sometimes things happen.
Torrential downpours happen out of nowhere.
Some kid throws a water balloon at you accidentally.
Water spills on your desk.
Life is messy and to say "Well don't do that thing" is kinda wrong don't you think?

Sure, accidents can happen, but you are proactively taking steps necessary to fraudulently claim a replacement phone for when/if the time comes that such an "accident" happens. That mentality led me to believe that you might not take the route of caution when it comes to your phone. No, my statement wasn't wrong at all.

Well now we're delving into people's individual personalities.
While yes there are gonna be people who just decided to live more vicariously with their phone now that there's a higher chance the store will take it back and exchange it for a working one when the time comes that it breaks.
But that's not all people.
By your logic, people who buy phone cases are more prone to dropping their phone.
In reality, that's obviously not the case.

Not at all. Protecting your device against accidental damage is one thing. Covering up the water damage indicators is deceptive. Hence, one can reason that you are a somewhat deceptive person. That's not an assumption since you admitted it in your original post. Figure it out yet?
A lot of people openly condone criminal activity I've noticed. You pay for insurance and you get replacements for $100 if you damage them. Everything is so damn expensive due to so many people abusing the system, scamming and outright theft. If you got thrown in the pool, whoever did it should be responsible for the damages. I am going to assume it was an escalating situation in which you had previously provoked this response, therefor you don't feel comfortable making the person responsible take responsibility for their actions.
I also see people complaining about software cost and trying to get the software free through not necessarily legal means. These phones are "expensive". If you can't afford the cost of admission, you shouldn't be trying to get on the ride.
Not to change the tide of the topic, but I wish people would do a study to link this with religion and political stance. Atheist always get a bad rap, as soulless/moral-less/heathens, yet make up less than 1% of the US prison population. So I wonder were each religion ranks in things of this nature. I know my stance on religion and what I think about these types of scams.
I actually have a question about this. Mine and my Moms (didn't check my dads) indicators are all showing red with checker style lines. Phones have never seen water but we live in Florida, so it's humid. Is this indicator showing water damage, or humidity damage. All my phones show this, and I never get them wet. But I was under the impression they were suppose to be a solid white. I only checked the battery one, but I would assume they were all the same.

So if a water balloon was thrown at me.
And let's say my phone was broken due to water damage.
I don't feel like this is negligence on my part.
But yet the company will say to me that it's considered negligence.
So now am I supposed to attack the kid's family for compensation or do I just go and scam a company? One takes in millions of dollars a year, the other may not break that in a lifetime.
And yes I realize that there is phone insurance. Parent's picked the plan, not me.

Lol, I didn't provoke anything. I was peering into the pool and then all of a sudden I was thrown into it after someone yelled: "Throw him into the pool!"

My point is this: you are trying to justify deception in order to not have to hold yourself or any party at fault just so you can get a free replacement from a company that makes their money from hard work, research and development, and sells the phone that you want so badly that you won't legitimately get it replaced if it gets water damaged. See the circle of nonsense?

OK well because I didn't know this I went on eBay to find the stickers cause I would not be screwed over by humidity again, haha. So I looked them up and they were all white, another reason I thought I was boned (can this be explained to me please). If I drop mine in water, Sprint will see my $100 because I think that's a good deal. But if my camera goes out, and it shows water damage and I KNOW I didn't drop it or get it wet, then well a huge **** Storm would happen but in the end I would lose without the help of illegal activity which in this scenario is not bad (in my opinion).
I agree with the OP because these sensors are way to sensitive. I had one turn red on my EVO and it touched absolutely no water. BTW i live in a humid climate

I've had this happen as well, and when I took my phone in to be replaced for a different defect, they tried to tell me it was water damaged. I told them to prove it to me, and show anywhere other than the indicators if there was evidence of water. There would've been if it had truly been water damaged, but there wasn't. They replaced my phone.

i do know that as far as the HTC phones that Sprint has, the water indicators are white with red lines crossing it.. if it gets wet the whole thing turns red.. the indicators are weird though, my wife's hero had the indicator turn totally red but it never saw a drop of water, but her Evo was basically submerged in water and sprint took it apart and all was fine.. so.. who knows really.. if you get it wet put it in a bucket of rice for a day before you do anything else with it, and everything will be fine..

i dont know if anyones talked about this but theres this thing called liquipel (link: http://www.liquipel.com/) they supposedly make you phone almost waterproof. i say almost because in this video (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70RMWiavxj0&list=UUMgCvJ3_QahXgvwj6LjOd-w&index=1&feature=plcp) the guys iphone screen, after being submerged, doesnt work anymore. everything else does though. the water just rolls off, its pretty cool. and for 50-70$ it looks pretty good. you have to send in your phone though but in the long run could potentially save your device!
Looks interesting, but not really worth it IMHO. Like the guy in the video said, with the price point it's really only going to be worth it for the accident prone people who have gone through several phones because of water damage. Sure, if you go swimming/surfing a ton and are always forgetting to take your phone out of your pocket, this could be worth it. But if you're more just worried about accidentally spilling something on your phone or something like that, I would think a case with a screencover (like an otterbox or a titan) would more than give you enough time to get the mess cleaned up and prevent the liquid from seeping through too quickly.
BUT, it would be pretty cool to play angry birds or watch netflix in the shower/bath and not have to worry haha.

yeah same thinking here, but for the same price as a otterbox or titan and no extra bulk, it could be worth it. just my 2 cents. probably wont get this, just trying to help the accident prone section of droid x2 owners
I would be careful sending your phone in as i notice theY have changed the wording on their website from waterproof to watersafe, so looks like they are trying to step away from claiming waterproofness. Also, did you see the video with Leo Laporte on iPad today? The episode was called iPad Today 91: Track Your Life, Paper app, EyeEm and from 27mins in he takes out a phone treated with Liquipel and tests it on air. At the end of the video he tests the phone again and it is totally broken (go to end of video to see). Also saw on his twitter site that he tried to get it fixed but it suffered water damage and he had to buy a new one.
Don't think I would try it.
What yall think ??
Bump
What I think? I think I am gonna buy instead of pneumatic phone drop device, some decent case for my Note 8. AKA, couldn´t care less about all these tests.
These are NOT tests they are idiots acting like..............idiots.
Tip. If you drop a metal and double sided glass device chances are it will break....Shock, horror.
Ryland
Got a TPU case to cover corner drops and let me be comfortable turning the phone face down.
No worries about this stuff. Does anyone use this phone naked?

Does anyone else have the link open them to YouTube in the browser instead of the app? I want to fix that so it opens in the app. Any idea how?

So sorry to learn your life is "Crap". Can we do anything to assist you? WE could always perform one of these drop tests on you if you like? How about we drop you from the fourth floor of a building and 'test' how you land? That would stop you from feeling like "Crap" and give you a whole new perspective on 'life'......What do you think?
Keep well. :fingers-crossed:

Kind of a jerk thing to say regardless if you're playing or not.
Maybe somebody's claim of having strongest glass ever put on the phone is shuttered into little pieces. And like the fact N8 could survive multiple drops and still work.

So called 'drop tests' are a blight on technology and totally ignorant, absurd and stupid.
WHY do people 'drop test' a device that does not claim to be drop proof?
WHY are the 'testers' always shocked when the device breaks?
What approved method of quality control, ie testing standards, are being used.....Of course the answer is non.
Its not an industry secret that if you drop your Hi Fi amp', DVD player, speakers, lap top, DAP or many many other technological devices they WILL break. I akin this stupidity to purchasing a car and driving it into a wall to test the airbags! WHO does that?
Then we have the freezing of our Note 8 etc etc in coca cola, hot soup, fried and boiled and so, such absurdity goes on. These devices are expensive and to deliberately destroy such things for ZERO reason is just bloody absurd.
I don't find such things a joke I find them rather sick and those who perform such actions need help. Its vandalism pure and simple. When I consider how many people are waiting to receive their Note 8 on back order then see some jerk smashing one to pieces I feel anger. Its becoming an accepted 'Norm' and its a worrying trend.

Read what you said to the guy again to see why I said it was a jerk move. He was talking about a phone, so you offered to "drop him off a building to fix his crappy life".
Regarding the subject though, people accidentally drop phones all of the time. Some would like to know if the phone will be dead if it happens. Regardless of what you think, phones of 2 years ago even survived most drops. The new ones of today are getting more and more fragile due to the materials and curved aspects of the glass.

I 'thought' the irony of my post was obvious? One drops a mobile from a fourth floor it WILL break. One is dropped of same floor and one will break. If this point of 'testing' needs spelling out what's the point?
I accidentally dropped a 15k watch 25 years ago. It broke, I was not surprised. Point is I didn't drop test it when I bought it 5 years earlier to see if it would break! :silly:
Regardless of what you say if you drop a mobile off a roof or by drone or helicopter, boil it etc blah blah it will break.
You agree mobiles are "fragile" if you understand that why advocate and support these absurd so called 'tests'?

Well, while I agree that freezing a phone and dropping it sorta stupid, drop tests aren't. No phones beyond Galaxy Active are advertised as drop-proof (that I know of) yet we all drop them, it's a reality of life, and while certain phones aren't specifically designed to be drop-proof, some designs are intrinsically better at distributing the energy of the drop to the frame, which the drop tests show. Like Nexus 6p is going to be significantly sturdier than Galaxy s8 because of the design, not because someone tried to make Nexus 6p a drop proof phone.
OMG... broken too easly
Any screen protector can fit good and protect the screen for Note 8?
Sneak attack technique of ad-ing mid-vid. :highfive:
I enjoyed watching the two drop because of how Steve Jobs had everything ON THE INSIDE symmetrical. The other-than-Note-8 phone landed so flat. Haaaaaaa.
