[Q] Is Android L going to bring lag-free ui? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I have been an android user since android 1.6 and I have used all the android updates upto 4.4.2 (on a Gpad that I'm currently typing).
Since ICS we (android users) been told that they're bringing Buttery-smooth experience to our devices. But this promise was far from real.
All this years Google was trying to FIX the lagginess problem by patching their OS's.
Currently KITKAT is doing a pretty good job but I have red on some older posts, saying that the root problem with android's general lagginess is the way it treats UI rendering.
IOS and Windows Phone do the rendering on a separate thread while android does rendering in the main thread.
I also understand that today's android devices is powerfull enough to consistently generate 100% smooth experience. (hell, I am getting buttery-smooth experience on a Nokia lumia 630 with 512mb RAM)
Android team said that with android L the rendering will finally be done on a separate thread.
My question is, will Android L finally bring 60 fps throughout the OS without any known stuttering happen? (when scrolling, pulling down notification bar, etc.)
Sorry for my English.
Please do not post fanboy-childish comments.
Much love,
Alexander K.

android port to lumia ? or am i crazy

hi , does enyone know if there will be a port from android to lumia ?
because that would be pretty cool , having te possibilit yto run android on this epic phone
i love WP7 but there arent that many awesome apps , so thats why i would love the possibility to run android
anywayz , have fun with your phone !
and i know this isnt Q&A but that forum doesnt exist yet so i post this Q here
grtz
It will never happen. Two completely different systems. I'm coming from Android and I for one would not want to ruin this phone with putting Android on it. I find WP7 so much more modern and refreshing.
I do not miss force closes nor lag.
I'm not negative to the possibility. I'm just sure it's not possible.
Hi,
I don't think it will happen. Due to there not being that many developers for the lumia. I also thing most of the hardware could be used in android, Seeing as the HTC Desire S and the Sony Xperia Arc use the MSM8255 Snapdragon(but i could be wrong, I have only really started developing).
I just dont see any real advantage of running Android on the Lumia. It is already a great device. I could only see thing going downhill if you did. Your device would have alot of lag plus the lumia only has 512mb of ram. And everybody that has used android will tell you 512mb of ram is sufficiant but not enough to run smoothly or run any intense apps.
You could, but you'd have to ask Dark Forces Team and Cotulla to release either a port of MAGLDR or the source to it to modify the chain boot loader.
Something I'd love to see but doubt we will ever see. I personally just got a Lumia 800 and although it's a nice phone the software lapses too much and in too many places so back to Android I go...even if it is the newer Android which is skinned over and too customised!
As I know the bootloader of lumia is very secured and will not allow modifications like dualOS booting.
1. You are crazy.
2. People always want what they can't get.
Technically it is possible. We have already seen examples of porting Android to older WM devices, like HTC HD2, HTC Touch Cruise, but it involves a lot of work and knowledge in system hacking.
Once you have cracked bootloader you can boot whatever you want. All you need to do is to find a device with the same chipset already running Android and port it over. Of course there will be many driver problems like non working, BT, WiFi, camera etc, but hey, what did you expect.
I bet that there is the same question in Nexus forums - How can we port WP7 to Galaxy Nexus
If you want the Lumia with android, sell it and buy the Nokia N9
http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/10/nokia-n9-spotted-running-ice-cream-sandwich-dual-boot-in-the-wo/
damn i should hav bouth the n9 :/
would hav been better...but i still love this baby..
about time till the OS is opened up for new features....

You're both crazy, why didn't you just go Android? Strange people?
Yeah I bought this phone to get rid of Andrpid myself. I'm so sick of it!
Why the hell would you want freakin' Android to run on a WP like this?? You're crazy, that's clear
Android only has negative sides, WP is refreshing and smooth. I don't see ANY reason why you would want Android to mess up this beatiful phone.
Okay, I'm an Android hater, that's clear, but let me point it out:
Android is a copy of iOS (it's just boring)
It lags all the way
You need a nuclear power plant to keep it running for 1 day
The user experience is not consistent on all devices (not even with the same OEM!!)
Updates? Yes, if you do it all yourself
Open? Oh, thank you for your openness Android, and the malware...
I can go on if you'd like, but I think it's clear why I don't see this as a good idea...
Lol, that was one of the dumbest trollings I've seen, _Madmatt.
For me its WP which only has negative sides. Its locked, limited, the interface is counter intuitive in many places, can't multitask properly, most apps are inferior to android ones, upgrades are rolled out slowly and with the locked product codes you never know if you'll get the next one, etc.
Ah, and android is no copy of iOS, but the wp7 tiles ARE a copy of android widgets, with some functionality removed.
As for the hardware of the lumia 800, it is superior to my 2 years old N1, with a better CPU, GPU, and the same memory. And my N1 flies running MIUI, so even a crippled phone like this should even be better.
Why did I get a Lumia? I was offered it, tried to use it for some time, gave up, gave it to the wife, who is now begging for me to give her her blade back. Even the better screen and camera were insufficient to convince her to keep using the Lumia. She keeps complaining of the apps, of the terrible battery, of being unable to do anything. Even changing a ringtone is a mess, having to cut and resample a MP3 file before being able to use it as a ringtone.
So, it seems like the Lumia will end in a drawer until someone manages to port android or meego to it. Unfortunately as it was a gift I can't sell it, or it would be gone by now.

LOL, you think I have such things? No way mate
Android and WP7 are two completely different beasts. No point in comparing them it's all about personal preference.
I come from Android and WP7 suits me so much better even though I liked the freedom of Android compared to WP. I rooted and flashed roms like crazy. But I got tired of acting beta tester. So much bugs here and there on Android. Specially if running custom roms.
Sure there are more apps also with more functionality. But I prefer the metro styled WP7 apps as they most often fit the design of the OS. That can't be said about Android apps. Often ugly and no one looks the same making the user experience much worse.
The lagg was the biggest issue for me with Android though. No matter the hardware (SGSII) there is always lag because of how the Android OS is built up. Even ICS won't fix this fully with its hardware acceleration. This is a area where Google has failed. Giving a smooth user experience. Both iPhone and WP7 has this and understand its importance but Android can't unless they rebuild it from the ground which I don't think will ever happen.
Completely agree with ^^
I was active Android ROM builder, tester, themer etc for more than 2 years., but I think I just got tired of endless battle with force closes and laags. The biggest problem with android is that it does not run on native code but on interpreted layer dalvikvm. You can try as hard as you want, but you will always need double horse power for the same tasks on other platforms.
That's also explains why WP7 is perfectly smooth with x2 less CPU and RAM while latest Google flagship with nearly desktop PC power suffers laagspikes here and there. While those small laag spikes are less visible on smartphones things are just getting worse with tablets. Today there is no tablet running Android which can render UI transitions with 60fps.
You can read a blog from ex Google employee about that.
How about some Android graphics true facts?
I agree with you guys, after using android from G1,htc hero, desire S,nexus one,sg1 and 2,galaxy nexus,lg optimus black and apple 4 and 3gs with all the cusotm roms and modifications none of them stand above wp7 smoothness. I can say i never had a lag on my phone ever, where android and ios would lag here and there. Again e-mail aplication is just a joy to use,and all the animation how they smooth transit...it never stops to impress me. Ofcourse it has some shortcomings but definatelly will get better, especially with nokia's help.Aplication wise, well i don't use that many apps but the one i used definatelly looked better than android and apple,it's like the have more soul and not look so dull and borring.
At first i did not like the idea Nokia refused android but now i see that they done the right decision,i see it no better.

Well said. I had got used to the lag and didn't realise how bad it was until I got the Lumia.
I got sick of flashing ROMS too. CM7 was nice and stable, but when ICS roms came out I got sucked in. The gapps are all facelifted and are a lot nicer than Gingerbread. But then the ICS roms all have their issues and it just gets annoying.

[Q] whats the point of updating my Android OS if i'm using a launcher ?

I have a Galaxy S2 phone (running Ice-Cream-Sandwich), but i flashed a larger 'System partition' and 'Data partition' ( 1GB & 6GB respectively ), which is much larger than the Stock version.
Ok, imagine this comparison:
THREE identical GalaxyS2 phones:
* 1st phone: Adroid 4.0.3 (Ice-Cream-Sandwich), running Nova Launcher.
* 2nd phone: Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean), running Nova Launcher.
* 3rd phone: Android 5 (Lollipop), running Nova Launcher.
in ALL 3 cases, i will be using Nova Launcher. So my Visual experience will be identical.
so, what is the point of bothering to upgrade the Phone OS ?
- as far as I have heard, upgrading OS on the Galaxy S2 will slow down my phone anyway.
is there something I have missed ?

You'll be less vulnerable to security hole that has been patch up in latest OS. There have been numerous report about hacker able to steal your phone data back on 4.0-4.2.
Also new features and possible bug fixes. Your question is like why to buy a new car when your 20 years old is the same color, it has 4 doors as well, etc.
By the way, pretty bad approach judging an os by just the visual appearance. Furthermore i don't believe samsung did not change the UI at least slightly between those versions. Not to mention the UI is not just your launcher.
Just one big change between 4.x and 5.x - in the latter, the apps run in ART, before they ran in dalvik. Art supposed to be faster as - and i don't remember exactly the technical details - but the code is pre-translated when they are installed and not upon run-time.
There can be no comparison of what launcher you have on what phone compared to what OS version it has.
I've used several phones over the last 18 months, the one I bought off eBay running android 4.0.4 ice cream sandwich was c***.
I then had several phones running 4.1 or 4.2 jelly bean, these where better, much more "stable"
I have a galaxy s1 running 5.1.1 lollipop, and a brand new moto e purchased with 4.4.4 kitkat but now upgraded to 5.1.1 lollipop and by co insistence I run nova too, and as far as I'm concerned, lollipop is streets ahead of anything else, with kit kat a close second, but my opinion is not based on what launcher each phone has, its based on a range of variables, calling, texting, ease of use, bugs, music, and internet browsing.
Running the latest software means a device is less vulnerable to security issues, will be running at peak performance and small bugs will be fixed.
For anyone to say I have three phones running nova so I don't need to update to a newer software is quite frankly naive, stupid and irresponsible, but that's your choice and just my opinion, its a bit silly to judge latest OS but how it looks, remember how it looks is just one small thing, Samsung haven't changed touchwiz much since the year dot have they?
I prefer a stock look on any phone I use that's why I went for a moto e, flashed omni ROM on my s1 and run nova to get rid of the awful touchwiz and run the latest OS on my phones.

Thanks for your replies guys:
i want to share my personal reasons (based on what you said):
i have had ALL THREE of the above OS running on my GalaxyS2. (IceCream Sandwich, JellyBean and Lollipop).
its currently with Lollipop running Nova. (but its way too slow on my phone and killing my battery).
so, my thoughts were to Downgrade to Jellybean (which I know will be much faster) for my phone and use a Nova Launcher.
- (I have a feeling that KitKat will also be slow on my device).
As for the issues you both pointed out:
- Security issues that you both mention. Seriously, I am not concerned by any security vunerabilities or people stealing my data. I have nothing important worth stealing on my phone. i am 0% concerned by security.
- However, if some small Bugs have been fixed, then obviously that is a PLUS. (from my memory, I didnt have many issues with Jellybean, though ICS seemed to crash a lot).
- You mentioned: "Calling, Texting, Browsing" is improved with more recent versions. BUT, arent these just Apps ? Browsing is Chrome. Chrome on jellybean or Lollipo is the same Chrome app. FUnctioning exactly the same, no ?
and SMS and Phone and contacts again are Apps.. part of the Google Apps (Gapps). and i can also download any 3rd party phone or SMS. so I didnt really understand how a latter version of OS can be better browsing, phone and SMS. (again, i am not concerned with security if that was your point).
I am on a Galaxy S2 that has increased System and Data partitions. but its still limited by speed.
with every version of OS i go up, my phone slows down slightly.
is there something (apart from the above) that I am not aware of ?
IYes there is something else you are missing.
You have an s2, I have an s1, its not my daily phone, its my work phone.
I noticed like you that the higher version OS I used, the phone did indeed slow down.
It slowed down due to hardware limitations of the device, not the Newer OS slowing the phone, its was the phone slowing the OS down..........
In my personal experience, my s1 also drained the battery whilst on lollipop, kit kat didn't drain so much , but was very laggy, and jelly bean (4.3.1) was about the best choice between performance and stability, didn't lag but had much less in the way of tweaking options.
I also had a phone from a Korean manufacturer (huawei) that I hated the horrible ui, installing Nova over the usual ui, and after a few days the phone became laggy, froze and crashed a lot.
Now for the bad bit.
1. Are you mad?
You say you are 0% concerned about security?
HELLO!
Do you know what its like to be the victim of identity theft?
Dont you understand saying "I have nothing on my phone" is like saying there is no petrol in my car......
What about your contacts?
What about your own personal data like passwords and emails?
Your phone number?
Android constantly updates any security issues with things like this, it is very important and you should be concerned about it, not display such naivety in this nasty place of a world, someone will always try to take advantage of you or people that show no concern for their or their contacts security, believe me.
2. Again, you show no understanding and much naivety by suggesting browsing, calling and SMS are just the same app.
Let me correct you, its not.
The chrome I use on my moto e is not the same chrome that was on it before it upgraded from kit kat to lollipop, yes its a better, and improved version, but no, not the same, neither is the built in browser, the dialer or the messaging app.
You suggest you can use or replace the stock apps with 3rd party apps, yes you can, and no one or nothing can stop you doing that.......
But have you stopped for a second to consider the small fact that using Nova launcher and other 3rd party apps over the stock ones may been the cause of your problems?
Just because you have increased partition size does not mean throwing 100 apps on it will make it work faster or better than before, you are still limited by physical ram and processing speed, and I'm sure your s2 processor isn't anywhere near as fast as the processor on my moto e?
Yes you may have noticed a difference by increasing partition size but in my own experience, and reading lots other peoples experiences on here, lots of problems can be attributed to having too many apps bogging the system down, and nova is known to be a big ram hogger!
This is what crashed my Huawei
And I agree with the previous post that it may be a bad idea saying what your phone looks like is a reason or no reason to update the OS.
Its entirely up to you if you choose to update or not, no one can make that choice only you, but I fear by the nature of your post and what you have replied that you don't have that much experience and don't really know what you are talking about.
Its not my intention to offend or upset you, but you don't display the knowledge to press you argument, i suspect many here on xda will not even bother replying to you or may just laugh at you, I'm not going to lecture you, ive probably embarrassed you enough so I'll shut up.

I'm sorry if my reply was harsh, I was not meant to be harsh, but I want make you realise your phones performance is not dictated by the launcher, although the launcher you use can have a dramatic effect on your phones performance.
Have you tried other launchers?
Your post doesn't say if you have, so I suggest you try holo or L launcher, something lightweight, test and report how you get on, goto play store, have a good look around, mini launcher is another one to consider.
Forget nova, let's assume Nova is your problem.
Try other launchers.
Get rid of the 3rd party apps.
All of them.
Just keep essential apps, no bloat and nothing unnecessary.
Again, test for a few days, report back.
Downgrade your android version to 4.3, again, don't install anything unnecessary and test, see how you get on.
Report your findings after a few days.
Stop advertising the fact you have an increased partition, it won't have any effect on performance and just throwing lots of apps on your newly larger partitioned storage will still bog it down.
Forget it, but its still there, its not going to have any effect on your overall performance, so don't tell anyone about it, there's no point.
Please let us know his you get on, but promise to try my suggestions first, OK?
There is a reason I said things the way I did.........
That is when I started messing around last year with my S1 and had problems with lag, crashing and various other issues, I did not research what was causing my problems, it was only the fact I had a shed load of 3rd party apps slowing my S1 down and when I posted here on xda that fact, I was made fun of and people called me stupid, I'm not suggesting you are stupid, but take time to experiment and don't assume anything, this can be sorted but only with some time and effort from you.

wow!! really, i wasnt expecting such a detailed reply.
honestly, thank you very much for the time and effort you put into your reply. (really, no offence taken at your harshness).
and hopefully others that stumble on this subject (in my position) will learn from the input on this thread.
OK.
the only thing that you wont like to hear, is about security, i'm still not worried about it as much as yourself...
(but everything else you said, I agree with)
[About the Security topic]
my reason:
i know tonnes of people who are on ICS or Jellybean still (because that is what came with their phone). they maybe upgraded once (from Gingerbread to ICS, or from ICS to Jellybean).
all these people i know are way less technical than I am !! and they wouldnt have a clue how to update their phones that they have been carrying around for 4+ years.
there must be litterally millions of people around each country (grandparents, non-tech people, kids of around 8 to 12 years old with a smart phone). and all on the same stock version of android that originally came with their phones.
(Android Version 'Market Share', currently shows 50% of the market using kit-kat and beyond... and the remaining 50% using jellybean and before).
[source: wikipedia Android Version Page]
so, not wanting to have the latest android version (coz of improved security) means I am in the same boat as half of all the worlds android users.
anyway... no point wasting time about security. that is the only part I am of a different opinion with you. (and even if you feel I am being silly,,, I am not a worrier,,, even if they get my contacts and start annoying my friends or emailing whoever or deleting my facebook or reading my emails. or even pleasuring themselves to my family photos,, honestly i am not gonna lose any sleep over it).
i'm sure most people dont want that. and of course i dont either. but also i'm not sacrifice the speed of my phone (which I use so many times per day), just coz I feel safer about security with a more recent OS that my phone is trying to keep-up with (resulting in a slowly user experience).
Everything else that you said really ressonated with me.
i only know the TouchWiz and Nova. so Yes, I will try holo or L launcher or mini launcher.
Currently I have Lolipop and Nova and a basic Gapps package and about 50 apps downloaded.. (though many are not being used).
i have this hunch, that (for me) my best option will end up being a simple return to a Jelly Bean Custom (unbloated) Rom, with a launcher that doesnt hog the RAM too much.
My 50 Apps on the phone will probably end up being more like 30 in the end after I have weeded out the bad ones.
if I can find a good KitKat Rom that is stable, unbloated and highly recommended, then I might be happy with that too
PS: Ok, i wont bragg about my amazing supersonic 1GB system partition and 6GB of data.. Lol .. (ok,, sorry,, couldnt resist)..
PPS: seriously,, this lollipop is crazy battery drain on my phone! it ran out in under an hour!! just one photo was eating up 1% each time!
i had way more apps (with ICS and Jellybean last month) and never had this kind of battery drain !
sorry for the long winded reply.
(kind of a thanks for your original replies)
I will report my findings here.. but it may be slow,, coz I dont have much time for app data saving, and backups this next week.
Well at least we agree!
I can't really compare my S1 to your S2 (mine has a super extended 9gb partition that some people say having is total madness) since I updated it to lollipop the battery drain was mad, totally crazy.
But for a 5year old phone that was officially only supposed to run android 2.3 gingerbread, I had an amazing time boasting to my work colleges I had the latest version of android, but was humiliated and embarrassed by the 5hr battery time (on stand by with data and WiFi on)
I too used nova with a lollipop theme, uninstalling nova smoothed out general running, it was a tad more stable, but i like you assumed the launcher was the be all and end all, I had no idea that some launchers absolutely killed the battery or consumed so much ram.
I also wrongly assumed having such a large internal partition was fine to put loads of apps, themes, ringtones ect.
I had around 40 apps on my S1 when general stability was lost, it was laggy, crashed, rebooted and force closed all the time.
So after being made fun of in the omni ROM forum here on xda, I took the plunge and downgraded to kitkat, again, I lost general stability but going through my own investigations and testing and retesting, i found my gapps package was the culprit.
I flashed a smaller gapps package and general stability was restored, but I still had laggy start ups and force closes.
I downgraded again to cm10.2 (android 4.3.1) and that cured my problem once and for all.
I had similar issue a fortnight ago when I got my brand new moto e on contract, I got a bootloader unlock code from Motorola and didn't waste anytime rooting and flashing cm12.1 (android 5.1.1) but after a few days it became unstable, so I'm now testing other custom roms, the best for moto e I've found being paranoid android lp 5.1.1 and cr droid lollipop that I'm running now, but I'm not running nova on my moto e, as the trebuchet or launcher 3 whatever it is called is just as configurable as nova, I'm running a cm12.1 theme and I'm very happy with my set up, but I only have about a dozen apps like Facebook, YouTube and gmail installed, and it is the most stable configuration I've ever found in a custom ROM.
I do wish you well, im very glad you agreed with my reply, and I do wish you well, I just think its a shame I don't have an S2 to hand so I could help you out, there's nothing worse than having problems with our phones!
Good luck

I switched from IPhone to Android back in 2013 when Samsung announced the Gakaxy S4. My opinions were mixed and i kept switching back and forth between the iPhone and the S4. I decided to switch to the S4 as my daily driver and since then i never looked back. I kept on upgrading every time to the latest flagship Note 3, Tab S 8.0, and now my Note 4 & Tab S2.
I noticed that android improved a lot in such a short time, but in some areas it remained the same. All of my devices not as smooth as my old iPhone in scrolling specially in websites that contains ads. I tried my best to fix this issue and tried other devices but it seems that Android is plagued with this issue on play store, chrome and many others. It seems like the developers can't hit the right spot in coding.
I tried to look for an answer but most of the info i found pointing to the problem that only Google can fix. Some say that UI rendering is not getting the priority in the process some other they say its because Apple optimize its ios on their phones and other say its because Android coding is hard compared to ios.
Will we ever see Android as smooth as Ios ? The question is going in my mind for a long time and the only reason I'm still with Android is because i love the filixablity that it offers to the user despite the other issues that we face with scrolling and surfing websites.
Would love to hear your opinion and if you have something to share.
Regards
Yathani

Which Android skin and why?

Hello again everyone,
Interesting conversation I want to have with users here; which Android skin do you like most and why?
Obviously AOSP != what Pixels run.
What if a future Honor device ran Android One/Go? Would that be enough to convince you buy one? What if Kirin hardware was still used even with Android One?
What do you like and not like about EMUI?
Really want to get your all's input and feedback.
AOSP has always been my favorite, primarily because it adheres to Google's design standards, and theoretically allows OEMs to deliver faster updates overall.
Skins like EMUI deter from Material Design a fair bit, and it makes it fragments the experience in that sense. It looks too much like iOS, but honestly, I don't mind it too much, because the features it brings with it are actually useful rather than bloat (I'm not saying EMUI is exempt from bloat). Overall, it's a good stock experience, but not something I'd run.
AOSP is also very flexible with projects here on XDA, and it allows for the ease of development and synchrony.
The code is generally cleaner than the additional stuff that OEMs add, and there usually a performance benefit. Skins usually overdo it (I'm looking at you Amazon), and it detracts from what we come to expect from Android itself.
And finally, I'm not sure why, but devices that ship with AOSP-esque ROMs generally feel more premium. Probably because there is less useless garbage.
Those are just my quick thoughts. I hope Honor puts the feedback to use
EMUI tries too much to be like ios. EMUI doesnt incorporate Googles material design. EMUI needs to follow Android design guidelines and features. The share menu looks and functuion like IOS why? We need a better lqauncher. the icons are ios inspired.
Miui und EMUI feel like the interpretation of a 13 years old fan boy of how his phone should work and look like. While AOSP looks much more mature in total feel.
I switched from a phone running Near-AOSP Android 7.1 and now 8.0 to my first EMUI 8.0 device.
EMUI 8.0 on my Mate 10 Pro is a flaming piece of sh*t.
I don't even care about the design. Yeah, it looks like iOS puked all over Android KitKat after a drunken stupor - but that can mostly be remedied with a custom launcher and/or an EMUI theme.
I don't even care that the settings menu feels like it was organized by someone trying to hide their porn collection inside a labyrinth of subfolders back in the 90s. It's stupid, but you get used to it.
I *do* care about the insane amount of things that Huawei/Honor actively broke, removed or replaced with ****tier versions of the same thing.
That things that don't work is staggering:
* Many widgets don't reliably update, they simply die after a while and never show new information. Even Google Widgets are affected, like Google News & Weather.
* Notifications are unreliable. If you don't use an app for a while, don't expect to get any more notifications until you open it - even after fully whitelisting it from everything. I missed several important Facebook Messenger messages because of this. And if Do Not Disturb is enabled, notifications aren't just silenced, they frequently simply disappear into nowhere.
* Some apps simply can never show notifications when in the background on EMUI for more than half an hour, no whitelisting possible.
* Forget about running apps in the background long term, they are frozen eventually, regardless of your settings. And, no, not via Android Doze but via Huawei's own battery management that has all the surgical precision of a sledgehammer.
* You can't disable many system sounds. They also ignore the do not disturb setting and play full volume regardless (like the battery charging sound).
* You can't enable "Do not disturb" for x minutes/hours - that was removed for no reason at all.
* The AOD is essentially useless, it only supports Huawei's own apps, nothing else.
* Lock screen messages can't be expanded or interacted with - the arrow to expand them exists but doesn't do anything.
* You can't even set WiFi connections as metered, the feature was removed - you can't limit background traffic for those connections in EMUI. Forget about ever using a mobile or otherwise metered hotspot with EMUI.
* AdGuard doesn't survive a network connectivity change. When it reconfigures the VPN connection the battery manager kills it, regardless of whitelisting. The only workaround is to never let it reconfigure.
* You can't configure your billing cycle. If it doesn't start at the beginning of the month you are out of luck. One of the many, many native Android features that were simply removed in EMUI with a sledgehammer for no sane reason at all.
* You can't reliably set default apps or even launchers, EMUI loves to reset them back to default randomly. So you launcher of choice decided to roll out an update on the Play Store? Time to enjoy Huawei's launcher again from now on ...
* The same goes for many settings, even in Huawei's own apps - many settings just don't "stick" and are reset after some hours or weeks.
* By default the battery management eventually even stops Chrome from running in the background. Which is the sole WebView provider - breaking just about anything that uses WebView. Insane. At least here the manual whitelisting works as a workaround.
* The camera shortcut was moved from the power button to the volume button for no sane reason, which means it doesn't work when you listen to anything or when the screen is on.
* It has a ludicrous amount of Bluetooth compatibility issues. You though Bluetooth on Stock Android could be iffy? It's compatibility heaven compared to what Huawei somehow managed to do with it.
* Huawei removed Google's Smart Lock and replaced it with ... Huawei Smart Unlock, which currently *only* supports Bluetooth unlock, nothing else, and naturally doesn't even do that reliably.
* You enjoy "OK Google"? Well, Huawei has "OK Emy" as the only assistant capable of waking the phone. It literally has exactly two features (find phone, make a call) and the only semi useful one does not work - at all.
It's the dumbest, most infuriatingly, most idiotic take on Android I have ever experienced.
I still *love* the hardware of the Mate 10 Pro. It's near perfect for me: It's beautiful, fast, great display, amazing build quality and the best battery life and fastest fingerprint sensor of any current flagship.
But I hate EMUI's guts after a couple of months with it. And I really, really tried to like it.
Seriously, why anyone would prefer EMUI over AOSP, or pretty much any other Android skin, is beyond me.
I just miss an Android experience that just works and that I don't feel like I'm constantly fighting. I still love Huawei's hardware, but I'll avoid future EMUI phones like the plague.

Just trying to understand users. Some like features from skins that AOSP doesnt offer.
Really appreciate what was stated. I too wish notifications on the lockscreen were improved. Hope to continue the trend to make improvements with EMUI and listen to our users

Please try a stable custom rom like Omni ROM and you will understand that most people here on XDA just want good developer support. AOSP doesn't have features but it is designed well and less in your face like EMUI. And those that are here on XDA probably root it and install a custom ROM that is based on AOSP with added features without the cartoon like UI that some custom skins like Samsung, Huawei, LG provide.

I've personally used custom ROMs through my android history of close to 2 dozen devices. AICP, DU, AOSPA, LOS, Slim, RR, etc etc. been apart of the XDA community for close to 8 years.
I really want to support the dev community and have a passion for it. :good:

I prefer pure Android itself over OEM's skins. Why? It is not only the cleanest, but it's also way smoother and i have also nothing to complain about AOSP. One example (of many out there) could be Huawei Nova which I've owned. It was way smoother with LOS 14 and also had much better battery backup. It might be featureless compared to OEM's skins, but how many of us actually use all the features implemented by OEM? I personally don't.
Sometimes simplicity is the best.

Only Honor ones? Anyway, yes, that'd convince me. I don't care about Android One program, but I do care about AOSP.

No, then I wouldn't consider it. The reason I've bought Huawei Nova was because it had Qualcomm, otherwise I wouldn't have bought any Huawei. Qualcomm is popular and easier to develop for (correct me if I'm wrong). IMO, this is one of the reasons why XDA forums for Huawei are dead.
What do you like and not like about EMUI?

Things I like:
Lockscreen - I really like how the lockscreen looks, especially with a cool wallpaper. I'd choose this lockscreen anytime over AOSP's one as I like that's not "blurred", that I can see the wallpaper properly on a good screen. It just looks gorgeous. The widgets which can be accessed from the bottom is also nice. Would've been nicer if we could also choose own actions for that widgets.
White-blue themed - I love this man. I've always wanted this kind of theme.
Things I don't like:
Phone Manager - Man, this is just bull****. Apps are getting killed even after disabling the options in Phone Manager to not kill them. It's the most annoying thing. It's known that task killers are harmful for Android, yet that's what you're doing. Just let Android handle the things how it was meant to, it doesn't need task killers or some kind of RAM management. I also don't like the fact that battery stats is implemented in that and after removing Phone Manager, you no longer can see the battery stats, and if I remember properly, the option to block calls is also gone. That virus scanner is another ****. I mean, come on... It would have been so much better without this ****, Phone Manager. It's not only a bloatware, but it's also harmful.
Kernel - it's a mess. Just few examples: root scanner and some other protection which I don't remember right now (was related to rw system if I'm not mistaken), some configs in defconfig with "HISI" in the name are enabled on Nova which has Qualcomm. On top of this, you're providing the kernel as tarball making it hard to remove your **** for someone which is not pro, like me. I'm not the only one who said that your kernels are a mess.
Dark notification panel - Why black? Just why? Why didn't you make it white-blue themed just like the rest of the skin? It would have looked so much better. Dark one just doesn't make sense IMO when EMUI is white-themed. I'd have understood if EMUI was black themed, but it isn't.
Bloatware - removable, but still.
Privacy - I care so much about this and I doubt about it on EMUI, no matter what you would say. I haven't checked, but I'm sure that's possible to check out if there's something going on in the background. It's not like you would be the only OEM doing it though.
Screen Recorder - it's laggy and you better wouldn't have added it. I've recorded my Nova's screen when I've been on AOSPExtended even when gaming and there's no lag when I'm watching the recorded video. It was same on LOS, but I think it was slightly better on AEX. I haven't tried to record screen through terminal command on EMUI though, so I don't know if it could be better.
There were more things I like / don't like at EMUI, but right now nothing else cross my mind.
I had a list with things I like and I don't like in an app on my Nova and there were more things, but I've forgot what I've wrote there. Since it's broken, I can't access it, but I think I had a backup of that app made with Titanium Backup, so maybe I'll grab it through TWRP and restore it on my old phone to check.
I remember though that on the list I don't like was persistent notifications and seeing 0mb at apps in Developer Options > Running services, but when I've tried the last update they were actually solved (persistent notifications were really persistent and I could see the proper RAM usage at apps).
Why I won't buy Huawei anymore as of now:
I'd say that the percent is 99%.
EMUI - already listed some things I don't like and some of them are annoying af. As I've said, I have nothing to complain about AOSP, no annoying things or whatsoever.
Huawei support - this is a joke IMO. Lemme give examples. Huawei Nova came with Marshmallow (EMUI 4.1). You've updated it to EMUI 5 and even today it doesn't have a rollback update to go back to EMUI 4.1. Basically, people are stuck with EMUI 5 and obliged to accept your new changes which may not like. There's no full EMUI 4.1 firmware on Firmware Finder and the only way to go back to EMUI 4.1 is to unlock the bootloader, install TWRP and restore a backup of EMUI 4.1, only if you're lucky to get one from someone else. When I've asked Huawei support about rollback update, they've said about going to service. Well, **** that.
Second example is about the kernel source. You've uploaded EMUI 5 kernel source for a Chinese model of Huawei Nova and there was no EMUI 5 kernel source uploaded/mentioned for CAN-L11 and the other models. I've asked several times Huawei support about publishing the source for CAN-L11 and I've been told the same thing always. After a long time (couple of months), I've seen that there was a new category on their opensource website, with EMUI 5 kernel source for CAN-L11 and other models. I've downloaded it and compared it with the first EMUI 5 kernel source released which was for a Chinese version and I was surprised to see that's the ****ing same source code. Basically you've uploaded the same source after a long time and made a new category on your website where you've added the rest of the models at one source when you could mention the compatible models from the beginning or editing your website...
The kernel is a mess - already said it before...
Kirin chipsets - I've never used one and i would never use one.
XDA support - kinda all Huawei phones are dead on XDA. Some of the things listed before should be helping this.
That's pretty much all I had to say. If you're really looking into making changes, then I'll also be looking forward to those changes. I hope you're actually willing to make changes and that this thread won't be useless.
I'd really consider Huawei again if it's gonna have AOSP / Android One and Qualcomm chipset.
PS: Just noticed that there was a typo ("bloatwait" instead bloatware lol). I'm sorry if there's more typos/mistakes. I've wrote on my old phone which is a Galaxy S Advance with 4 inch screen and the keyboard is small...
I have used every single OEM based distro since the beginning of android. I have to say that out of all of them Sense was the one I liked the best. Here are my reasons why.
1. They had their own style (original Sense versions) They didn't copy anyone else. This is a big deal really. I personally am not a fan of material design. It looks very childish and unprofessional.
2. Added features that didn't bog down the UI (Hey Samsung)
3. They didn't add useless features just because everyone else did.
Now these things have changed as of late and I wouldn't use the new HTC sense (was part of their beta group at one time. They didnt listen)
With people using things like custom launchers, icon packs, themes and wallpaper apps like KLWP the over all UI of the OS really doesnt matter as its almost never seen. I mean how many times does someone really go into settings outside the first time setup? The notification shade is the major thing of the underlying OS that people see the most.
Android Go is really pointless unless you plan on lowering the specs of the honor devices. They lose functionality which is pointless if the hardware good enough for the standard version.
As for the chip. Well really that will only matter if the team puts in the time to help developers with documentation for working with the chip. This is the reason for the support of qualcomm chips. They have gone out of their way over the years helping developers with documentation and apis for working with the chips. You provide this and it will help alot.
I want to say Aosp will make you guys a Huge hit all around the globe. Especially if you bring Aosp over One flagship and one budget phone.
Personally i love emui. But market more oriented to Aosp
I'd take the Nokia approach to this matter. Since Huawei uses their AI mostly in the camera app, I'd love if there was an honor flagship running android one software and Huawei / honor camera app. Also, the background user data analysis for better battery and resource optimisations, claimed to be in EMUI 8 are being implemented in android P, so it's a win win for both the company and the customers
For those that are claiming aosp is the way to go atop and think about this. Samsung is the biggest Android oem and it is not because it get aosp. It's because of the features that touch Wiz offers that Google doesn't. Aosp really is bare bones enough that it can be compared to running Linux on a pc. It works but not as full featured or as well as something built for the hardware.

Completely agree with you man, but Honor doesn't really have much hardware differentiation like Samsung has infinity displays and S pen. All other EMUI features like Knock gestures are barely used and features like app twin can be done using a third party app like parallel space. But the benefits that Android one like ROM offers, like smoother UI experience and enabling faster updates with little to no feature exclusions. So I beg to differ in my opinion that OEM skin (EMUI) offers any benefits over Aosp.

I was just stating my opinion and I truly believe android one or stock android, for that matter, make a midrange phone, with lesser CPU power and RAM, perform equal to Honor / Huawei's 2017-18 flagship, the View 10 or the Mate 10 pro, running EMUI, and having better battery backup. I agree that EMUI is okayish to an extent because it is better than any other custom skins except Oxygen OS, but fragmenting the UI into region based firmware is a completely useless thing to do, considering that it slows down updates, takes more human resources to develop updates to separate regions and not to mention that they state regional feature prioritisation as the reason, but most of the basic features are common and they just add bloat like Paytm integration in Indian version and stuff like a separate Huawei app store on the international version, which is essentially useless because of all the stocks being updated either through the playstore or OTAs. Just My Opinion and I speak only for myself.

It won't make it equal to a flagship, it will just make a mid range not suck as much.

Exactly my point. But when you take a powerful midranger like a Nokia 7+ and compare it with an honor flagship running EMUI, say a View 10, I agree that the raw power of the CPU or the SoC would make the flagship open apps much quicker and load much faster, but since we are talking about UI experiences, we must touch the issues like memory management, resource allocation, battery optimisations, etc. I'd say based on my usage that once the apps are loaded onto memory on both phones, I find switching apps and multitasking a bit smoother on the stock android (android one) and with very comparable battery sizes (3800 vs 3750 mAh), the Nokia 7+ provides a bit more extended D battery life on heavy usage. Light to moderate usage yields very much the same battery life of around 7.5 - 8 hrs SoT, but think of what honor phones with flagship specs could achieve with android one or stock android. I'd say that at this point, with very comparable hardware on almost all flagships, UI makes a lot of difference and I think EMUI, though providing a lot of features and is almost as fast as android one, I'd say the extra features added only weigh it down in terms of raw performance.
Pure Android is always better choice over other custom UIs. It is fast, smooth and lag free.
It is fine even if it doesn't have some customizations that other UIs offer.
EMUI memory management makes some apps does not work properly.

Problem wid skin like emui is, OEMs take longer to bring android updates. More the skin is close to stock android more easier it is to give timely updates.
Honor itself has pathetic record in rolling out updates, that's the thing i dislike about emui

Please ...UPDATE... Android 5 or Higher For HTC Jetstream

HI
That means no programming Does not have the ability to update Android on this tablet?
I saw a lot of low-end phones that have new Android updates
I, who am not familiar with this field, should not comment. But I believe that for powerful programmers it should be easy
Please release Android 5 or higher for this tablet if possible:good::good:
