[Q] Daily use experience and Chrome behavior? - Asus Padfone X and S

I really like the idea of the Padfone-X and I am kind of ready to pull the trigger, however, I read on a review (Zdnet I think) that chrome does not adjust well to the change when docking in the station, that Chrome never shows the tablet sites, but always the mobile sites, is this true?
Also in general, what is the experience on a daily basis using this combo?
I am coming from a LG Optimus G + Sony xperia tab Z
Your inputs and experience are appreciated!

Many apps don't support the change without rebooting the app. I haven't had issues with it loading phone vs tablet sites more than any other device. Many sites seem to just ignore tablet mode and go straight to the mobile site, even on my old Nexus 10.

So, it is just a matter of re-starting the app? I know some sites do not have tablet site and they send you straight to mobile site, that also happens on my sony Xperia Tablet Z....
So, how do you like the combo, is worth and more useful vs a phone + tablet pair?
Thanks!

Despite having a radio antenna go out and a defective display, I love the device to death. I use it HEAVILY for productivity as a laptop and tablet, and slip it into my pocket on the go. It does take a good 10-15 seconds once in a while to transition, but I almost always have it in tablet mode.

Hello,
I know some sites support viewing in desktop mode through chrome. Tap settings and select desktop view. This transfers easily between the phone and tablet mode. Should you need further assistance, please email me at [email protected] and place case # N140846720 in the subject line.
Thank you for considering an ASUS product.

I was referring more to shortcomings of the website. I have found websites that ignore that setting across multiple devices.

[Q] Acer/Viewsonic 21.5" Smart Display /w Touch Android 4.0 ICS

Greetings everyone!
Last night I saw on HSN a new Android 21.5 inch Tablet/Monitor with a wireless keyboard mouse running Android 4.0.
First of all I wanted to know if anyone else has seen or purchased one. I searched for the device and I found a couple of YouTube videos showing the devices at tech shows and another one showing a ViewSonic version that was the same as the Acer device. Looks very cool (what I could see of it).
Second, I wanted to know if anyone has one and could give some first hand info about it. Like if it is rooted, can it be upgraded to Jelly Bean, etc.
Any info would be great! Especially if anyone has one and already hacked it!
I was thinking about getting one. Oh and I do know that it can be used as an HDMI monitor with touch screen capabilities (Windows 8 is what one video stated).
Thanks! And if I do get one before anyone replies, I will give the low down! :fingers-crossed:
Picked one an Acer in trade, quick check online shows availability at the box store for ~$400. Haven't had much time to play, but my initial impressions are positive.
Colors are bright and viewable at any angle.
Speakers are passable and a headphone jack provides options.
2 USB ports, need 1 for KB & mouse
MicroSD slot, unknown capability but works with my 8gb sandisk
Sometimes feels slightly underpowered, especially if using lwp- not a major complaint.
Chrome & Netflix work fine, so it meets 90% of my needs. Cannot currently install Facebook native app
It does do HDMI in, but not sure about output of touch for windows 8. I'm not saying no, but haven't looked in to it and doubtful.
There seems to be very little info on these things. I did take a quick few stabs at rooting with little success.
Can report:
Was able to install stock Google drivers for adb and bootloader
Could connect to adb and push files unable to run psneuter. Can't remember error but seemed to indicate locked bootloader
Only one physical button, so no "pwr+volume up" type stuff
Able to reboot to bootloader via adb
No display in bootloader whatsoever
Fastboot OEM unlock does not seem to work
Can reboot via fasboot reboot

Fun Gadget with promising Features and a few downfalls.
I got one of these Acer DA220HQL Smart Displays a couple of days ago. I figured I will share my experience so far.
Hardware:
The Screen is well viewable from different angles and it stands solid no matter at what tilt you set it to. You do have to use two hands to tilt it up or downward. The one Button it has is solid. USB Ports are on the right side. HDMI/Micro SD/Power/Ethernet in the back. No VGA or DVI Ports. Mini USB for Touchscreen Support under Windows and Audio Jack are located on the left side. Along the bottom are the Speakers which are loud enough but not spectacular. The swirly silver Cover over the Speakers is in my opinion not exactly beautiful and would have been nicer in black. But that is just an unimportant detail which might not even bother you. There are two holes behind the cover above the Power Button not sure for what that is.
Android:
The Display is running with the newest Update Android 4.0.4 Kernel-Version: 3.0.21-00003-OMAP-Android+ [email protected]#1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Mar 21 15:41:01 CST 2013
Pros: Runs smooth with great Touch Support under Android. Acer delivers a Quick Access Soft button add-on to Access Volume / Settings / Favorites etc. fully customizable. Logged in with my Accounts and was able to install all Tablet Versions of my Apps. I choose Apex Launcher Pro as my Default Launcher and restored successfully my Backup from my Paranoid Galaxy Note all Apex Settings. Android continues to run in the Background. Meaning you can start a download and Switch over to Windows 8 until it is done. With the Display connected via USB to Windows you get Access to the Storage Spaces of the Display to copy things to and from the Display.
Cons: Speakers do not continue to play when switching to Windows/HDMI. Switching between Android and Windows could be faster.
Windows 8:
When connecting the Display via HDMI and USB for Touch Support you get a two Finger Touch Display for Windows. You can Switch between Android and Windows 8 by staying on the On/Off Button for a while until the Onscreen Display (OSD) appears. Under Android you get an Icon to Switch faster.
Pros: Solid Stand for Touch Operation, 1920x1200 Resolution, One and Two Finger Touch support works good in Windows 8 for Primary Display.
Cons: Only two finger Touch Support which means in some apps limited Multitouch Support (Bing Maps 3D etc.), For Gaming I recommend a Gamepad like the idroid:con - Bluetooth Android controller since the two finger Touchdisplay does not react if more than two fingers touch the display. Works in combination with a Multidisplay System (I am currently using 6 Displays inkl. the SmartDisplay) but the Acer DA220HQL can only be used as the Primary Display with Touch Support. Without Touch support or in Mirror mode it will work fine.
Would I recommend this display?
Yes and No. Yes because it is a cool gadget from Acer and is a cheap way to have a Touchscreen for your Computer with added bonus. No because Acers gadget are not always fully up to par (instead of two finger it should have 10 finger support). In the long run that will become a Problem. I owned over the years a couple of those oddities like an Acer C300 Tablet / Acer Iconia DualTouch Screen / and now this Acer Smart Display. They all had their share of problems and I assume over time this will not be different.
Would I buy another?
Yes, for my Grandma since it is perfect for a Skype Station with the Built in Camera. I would love to use Paranoid Android on this Display to adjust DPI Settings and switch to Phone mode but for my Grandma it would work out nicely as it is.
PS: It seems the Viewsonic 220VSD 21.5" Smart Display and the Acer DA220HQL 21.5" Smart Display is the same Hardware just a little different Software.
Nice Setup you got there swiss :good:
Finally Got One
Well we finally got ours from HSN. Wasn't too happy with the delays, but that is HSN (long story short they sent a unit that was defective from some one else's return).
It booted up pretty quick. As soon as I got on to our WiFi, the setup was fast and easy. I got a BIG kick out of using the on screen keyboard (pun intended)
So far it performs very well. I would love to have Jelly Bean. I really got used to the Jelly Bean experience. But that is ok. Netflix was pre-installed and has a nice sharp picture.
Missing root. Anyone have any ideas? I haven't installed HP ePrint yet (the Play Store states that this device is NOT compatible with). I will side load it to see if it works. I will put it through it's paces. I think Google Cloud print works already.
I have alot of things to check out. I just un-boxed this and wanted to give a shout about how it is going.
Oh one plus about this system is (and I am not sure if it is Acer's software or the hardware) the wireless keyboard works GREAT! Unlike other tablets when you attach either a USB wireless or Bluetooth keyboard, this works without having to install a Null Keyboard app. When I unplug the keyboard, the on screen one pops up when it needs to. When you plug the USB back in the on screen keyboard goes away without any user intervention. The only downside is that spelling correction does not work when you long press a mis-spelled word.
So anyway I will be trying things out and report here anything new or different.
And thank you for the info from you other users. My wife and I are going to use this to replace our aging and almost not even useful G4 iMac.
Again if anyone has any updates or wants to share their experiences, I thank you in advance!
I got this unit as well. As a monitor it works well too bad the speakers don't work for windows.
Not too happy with the android part though.
I don't know if the 4.0.4 version is causing this, but there's plenty of apps I can't install from the play store, including Chrome (I downloaded an apk, but that version crashes a lot).
I got in contact with Acer (nl) today and he told me there are no plans for 4.1/4.2 at this time.
Told him to escalate my request and I will be contacted by the product manager next week.
I'll keep you posted!

Yeah found that too but unfortunately the Information Acer provides is not exactly correct. For Example they state a Maximum Resolution of 1920x1080. Luckely mine has 1920x1200 which is a important fact.
It is the cheapest Touchscreen I have found so far. In Switzerland they sell for 389 Swiss Francs which is currently 415 US Dollars. The cheapest Full HD Touchscreen I found starts at 499.-
Got the update and Google Play 4.1.6

I got the update pretty soon after getting it set up. I rebooted because I thought there was a crash problem with Google Play, but it turned out that the Play Store updated to 4.1.6 from 4.0.25. Good and bad I guess. I cannot verify it, but it seems that the OS Update may have caused the Play Store to show "Incompatible with your device" on a lot of apps. Not that this is relevant to this post, but we also got a new HP 5520 AIO printer so that we could use it with this (and our other Android) devices. I was sad to see that when I searched for HP ePrint app, I found it only for it to say it is incompatible. I thought "What the hell! HSN was showing that it was easily compatible!" Fortunately on my phone, I have an auto backup on install app (File Expert) and have a copy on my phone which I dump onto my network drive. So I used ES File Explorer to look at my network drive and installed it from there with no hitch at all! I have done this with other apps and they all work fine except some start up in Portrait mode with the screen being sideways on the DA220! We also have a Rikomagic MK802IIIS on our 40" HDTV and I do not have this problem at all!
Now if they put a swivel on the back to allow you to switch it to portrait mode, that would be COOL! (I'll try posting a pic! :fingers-crossed
I think it must have to do with the prop file. But I am just slightly able to understand some of the system level stuff.
I hope some XDA Genius can find a way to root this baby and maybe even a Jelly Bean Rom! LOL  :fingers-crossed:
Some apps work great even with the 2 point touch screen. Fruit Ninja is a blast on a BIG screen! LOL Some do not work like Stupid Zombies 2.
I have mixed feelings about some of the things. I really am hoping for a Root solution. I miss my AdAway app!
Hope this helps! I will keep updating here with new info when I find it!
so did anyone get this unit with a wireless keyboard and mouse IN the package?
if so, could you take a picture of the keyboard and mouse and post it here?
thanks!

I am using the Samsung VG-KBD1500 Bluetooth Keyboard and a Logitech M570 Mouse.
Also I have a Snakebyte idroid:con Bluetooth Android Controller. > http://www.snakebyte-europe.com/en/container-produkte/products/android/idroidcon/ (so far no Modus I tried works with NFS)
Flipboard is a nice Software for the Display. Worth checking out. To check on the Kids or check on the House I recomend IPCam Viewer. For TV, Slingplayer with a Slingbox.
i got an email from acer (nl) yesterday, the guy i chatted with on friday escalated my question about a 4.1/4.2 update to the product manager.
same answer: there is nothing planned
replied to him this device really needs an update because too many apps cant be installed, i downloaded Chrome through apk but it keeps crashing on me.
also, the usb function (to hook it up to the pc) isnt working correctly, as soon as you switch to the monitor side of it, the tablet part becomes unreachable through usb
told him i was very disappointed by their answer and asked him to, if possible, escalate even higher into the organization
will let you know what their next answer is

Chrome seems to be preinstalled on mine and works fine. But you are right a Update would be great and we probably should all ask them for a Update. The switching is unfortunate but since I have multiple Monitors I can Keep it on Android and still use the rest of the Monitors on Windows 8 to connect to Android.
That said I did find that the Monitor is best used as a Android Standalone device in the Kitchen or something like that. You might decide to connect your Windows 8 Notebook from time to time but thats about it. As a Standalone device it is great because of the size. I went ahead and installed one for my Grandma. She is 86 years old and never used a Computer before. She is now able to call the Familie with Skype and even get lost in Flipbook. She basically just clicks all over the place and reads what she finds. But the important part is she knows how to get back to Skype. The Home Button is big enough and the Skype Icon on the Desktop also.
odd that you have Chrome pre-installed, could you please check what version you have installed?
or even better, post the .apk here?
i dont have room to use it standalone and love that it is also a monitor
its almost perfect, just the android version is holding it back
got the keyboard/mouse today, works perfectly, would be nice if i could change the functionality of the mouse buttons tho, cant find anuthing?
I got one too in taiwan few days ago.
I found that it's so annoying and terrible way to adjust the sound volume while watching movies, such as ones from YouTube. Also, no way to root it so far seems to be a big problem for me. I really wanna install a firewall APP to make it safer. So, can anyone please kindly post a way to root this thing? thanks in advance.

Yes I got the Acer wireless keyboard and mouse in the box with mine. I got ours from HSN. My wife wants to ship it back to them because it is limited on Google Play. I am trying to figure out how to root it and hopefully fix that. Anyone tried downloading apps that the play store indicates is not compatible and run them anyway? I have some work great! Others work but are displayed in portrait mode. That would be ok if there was an easy way to tilt the display on its side!
Still looking to see if anyone has rooted this thing. We may just send it back. But I am hoping for new info soon! :fingers-crossed:

So far None of us seem to be able to do so. Hopefully either Acer gets an Update together or we can find someone with enough knowledge to root it. UAE4Droid / Amiga Games run great and are fun for inbetween.
so i sent in a list of apps that arent working on this devicce. they mailed me back that they would test these apps.
today i got another email....
translation:
"unfortunately, it seems that indeed a numbers of apps do not work with this device. the answer however remains the same: there is no update planned"
and now the worst part:
"this is because the purpose of this device is not to support every application thats made available for it"
HUH????
i sent a message back, telling them i was greatly disappointed and that they should make the source for the da220hql available.
not that i see that happen...
@LoveMyAndroid2010: could you please post a photo of that keyboard/mouse?

miracast and wifi

Why is it that once I connect to miracast it will disconnect from wifi? Is it hardware limitation or software bug? My Samsung note 2 can connect on both miracast and still maintain wifi connection.

I believe that Sonys implementation of Miracast is wrong.
From what I read, Miracast it self allows for up to 10 connections and as you say your Samsung Galaxy Note 2 can handle both network connection and Miracast.
There's two threads at Sony's Xperia Forum that discuss this problem.
At first the Xperia Team said it was by design, but when several users explained that Samsung phones can have a Wifi connection active at the same time and that all Nexus phones running 4.2.2 could also handle this,
then the Xperia Team said that they would escalate the issue, but after that there has been no more feedback...
Here's the threads at Sony's Xperia Forum:

This is actually a really bad thing. I also purchased the push2tv system so could stream Netflix and YouTube from my tablet. No luck with that. My HTC one does it without problems.
I am starting to think that what if the random wifi disconnections are related and is because Sony uses only one antenna while there should be two.

actually the tablet z uses MIMO and has 2 antennas. in my opinion it´s clearly a software restriction.
I had the same issue since i bought the dock and push2tv for the same reason. Unfortunately nothing so far. It is definitely a software problem as Sony seems to have fixed it with the Xperia Z Ultra. It works fine while still connected to wifi.
The Xperia Z disconnects also by the way.

Is it a restriction on the S4, over Snapdragon 800? That could be why the Ultra (and then Honami) works.

No. I have to assume it's a hardware restriction then, or Sony can't or won't fix it.
I am now using MHL, which seems like a far easier solution - although even that cuts the performance of the phone considerably. Epic Citadel can benchmark at around 59fps on the phone display, but output via HDMI and it drops things to 30-40fps.

That's weird if it works on the T. I think this needs to be clarified. If it does, Sony really should be able to make it work, or else asked why they went backwards with the Z/TZ by changing the Wi-Fi specs/antennas.
I am going to go and check my Nexus 4 and see if that retains the connection. Previously I couldn't connect it to my TV but a new LG update on the TV has hopefully fixed things.
So did Sony really f*ck this up here. Unbelievable..I must say that I am so disappointed now. I was hoping to stream Netflix from the tablet.
Maybe I then have to get chromecast when available in Europe. I assume that it doesn't use miracast to do the streaming but likely it will stream on its own.

Right, just tried my Nexus 4 and it does keep the Wi-Fi connection. However, there's a lot more lag and the TV image doesn't quite keep up. What's more, the picture breaks up when it doesn't on the Xperia Z.
However, having an Internet connection does of course mean you can now stream TV and movies with Netflix or Google Play. Play crashed when playing a film though, and I have to say I didn't realise it could output a different screen. Netflix doesn't support this, and I'm not sure what else might (perhaps YouTube and other Google apps?).
Anyway, here are some photos I took;

Forget it, guys.
This concept of streaming stuff from the tablet is going to fade anyway.
For Youtube, Netflix etc. simply shell out $35 and get a Chromecast.
Or buy a Raspberry Pi and make your own Chromecast-y device.
Or buy a Satellite receiver like the Vu+ Solo2 and use Airplayer plugin.
All these solutions have in common that the streaming happens on the other device, not the tablet, and therefore is simply more stable and reliable (especially when a wired network connection is used). The tablet is only a controller, a"chooser" for media. (That's also more battery-friendly, by the way.)
Yes I know it should keep the wifi connection. I am mirrorring with my HTC One and wifi doesn't disconnect.
Only problem with HTC One is that after using for an hour or so the phone will get so hot that I get some warning message about it.
So that much for watching a movie like that.

Yes thats basically the better way to do it. I also do have WDTV Live and I can basically use Youtube so that I control with tablet and play on the big screen. Unfortunately the software on WDTV Live is buggy as hell and it crashes every now and then.
Also for some reason Netflix doesn't have this similar possibility.

Yes I know it should keep the wifi connection. I am mirrorring with my HTC One and wifi doesn't disconnect.
Only problem with HTC One is that after using for an hour or so the phone will get so hot that I get some warning message about it.
So that much for watching a movie like that.

I agree that the Chromecast way of doing things is the way forward for streaming services. However, I'd have liked to be able to play games without lag/dropped frames on the big-screen - and it seems that with or without the Wi-Fi connection staying open, the quality isn't quite there.
Maybe Snapdragon 800 improves this - and that could be something to sway me towards Honami - but perhaps Miracast will remain useful for showing off photo and videos stored locally (your own content) as a far better option than DLNA that rarely, if ever, works with modern video formats and resolutions.
Things like Miracast etc. are mostly used at home, where you have your TV or projector.
But at home it's not necessary to store the videos on a tablet and then stream them to the TV.
At home one has some kind of NAS from which the files are fetched.
I admit that for a long time I also thought about using the tablet as media hub / storage.
But if one thinks a bit about it and researches, it becomes obvious that much better and tried-and-tested options exist.
And for all other cases (like projecting different apps or playing a game on the big screen) the Tablet Z has a MHL/HDMI output, that's what it's for.

Even MHL slows the phone down, which must be a hardware limitation of the phone.
SlimPort is even worse. I don't know what sort of handshaking is carried out with that, but on my Nexus 4 when I was at CES I was on the stand of a company making them and we hooked my phone up to have the phone crash (even restarting on occasion) within seconds of connecting it.
I'd be interested to see if Snapdragon 800 has less problems with TV output, via Miracast or a cable - but the idea of using the smartphone as a remote to control streaming directly to a device (like a TV with a wired Internet connection) certainly makes sense. Google has once again come up with something great here, and it's probably totally the opposite of the direction Apple intends to take TV in the future.
Miracast
Hi guys, has anyone else had problems connecting their XTZ using miracast? I have the push2tv and my HTC One connects perfectly, but my Xperia tablet gives the error "Could not turn on screen mirroring. The output device does not support HDCP". It seems very strange as the tablet is listed the supported devices on Netgear's site.
I have the 312 version, and have the latest firmware on the push2tv.
this problem definitely not solved within 4.2 update. Dissapointing.

This ist what I posted in the sony forum thread under talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Tablet-Z/Can-t-do-Screen-Mirroring-miracast-and-WiFi-connection/td-p/333179/page/3[/url]
Sooo, installed Cyanogenmod 10.2 (based on Android 4.3 which supports WiDi/Miracast natively) and see there:
WIDI/Miracast and the connection to my home WiFi Network work simultaneously.....!!!
So Sony, two lessons for you here:
1. Get of your collective ***** and get Android 4.3 going without nerfing perfectly fine core features
2. If you're going the forum/community way, provide correct information (aka really ask your developers) and don't spew half informed nonsense/play the information hiding game...
To everyone else here: give them ****, or they will never learn!
PS: Who wants to try, google Cyanogenmod ("Pollux" -for LTE variant- or "Pollux_Windy" -for WiFi only variant-). Warning!: Possible Warranty void when flashing custom ROMS

Hi,
i am looking for a compatible dvb-t with my sony xperia z tablet. I want a device which has coaxial connection because i am from spain and the TDT coverage here is too bad for a small antenna. Does anybody have a dvb for this tablet?
Thanks

I'm personally waiting on the new generation of the HD Homerun.
The new HDHR4 should be coming soon (they said mid 2013 at CES), it is a network dual tuner that connects to your wireless router via ethernet ... you can then access the tuners on many different devices.
The new version is said to have a native android app, hardware transcoding and DLNA.. I can't wait, i will be buying it on day one.

Looks interesting for ~100$ but it is for use at home.
When on the go a USB Stick is a better solution.
Don't know if OP needs a solution for home or when out ?...

The idea of HD Homerun is very interesting but I do not know if i will pay 100$ when my usb stick for pc costed 15$. I want a usb stick to be used in my house because i do not have a television in my bedroom or in my kitchen where i have a plug to connect a dvb-t.
I have seen a conceptronic device (CTVDIGANG) but i do not see any review and in the specifications doesn't say if it is compatible with our tablet. Has anybody tried this one (or other similiar)?
The app recommend by babylonbwoy has horrible reviews. Have you successed connecting your Pinnacle PCTV Hybrid Pro Stick 330e to your android?

Well the biggest problem with that app is that it only supports Android 3.1, at least that's what it says in the description.
There is a TVMan app that seems to have good reviews but I don't know if you can use it with any dvb-t stick and I don't really know much about dvb-t sticks...
Edit:
There is also this app that seems positively reviewed for the most part:

Did not try for now, don't have lots of time, next week end. I have the OTG usb cable and everything needed.
True for bad review but it has at the same time 389 G+ recommendations... Don't know what to think.

In french translated playstore it looks like it says from 3.1 but not sure, and I don't find the change langage option in playstore new ui to check how is it in english. Last update is from july 9, again difficult to understand all that.
Not good at all for that price!

It states only for 3.1 in English, that's what I read it in the first time, hence my comment. I find it very odd that he has yet to update the app to at least 4.0 if it works in any way. The only positive review he had was when the guy tested it at his house, when he went to work (where he wanted to use it mainly) it didn't work because he had to forward ports (I think that's what he said) and even then it still didn't fully function. It seems really really sketchy to me.

When I saw dvb-t in title it caught me because of my old stick!
Edit : my link doesn't work no more, he removed it ?

No, he didn't delete it. He jacked the price up to $6.50 and changed the name of it so he could get rid of those negative reviews and sucker people into buying his app. It wouldn't surprise me of he has done this several times before. Here is his new link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.goprasoft.dvbt
I am considering reporting him, I don't like to make a fuss but it was obvious his app was **** and didn't work at all and noe he has changed it to get rid of the reviews so he can make more money on people who don't know any better.
Edit:
Now it has changed from the app only supporting "android 3.1" ,which there was no 3.1 only 3.0, to only supporting kernel version 3.10.

Definitely not a trust worthy dev, you're right.
I wonder how people can try this in 15mn allowed by Google, he has not even a demo version, and if he change name of his app refund will be hard to get ! Not a good bet in long term, he will rip fews people maybe but negative review will come back sooner or later.
no problem for reporting him as he isn't honest.

I did a bit of thinking after my initial pay and deleted him. I explained everything thoroughly so hopefully Google will do something. It would help if other people reputed him as well. I hate to see people lose their hard earned money to some scam artist.

DTV would be good but isn't having loads of wires defeating the object of have a small, lightweight portable unit? Out of curiosity I'd like to try with my USB DVB-T tuner but I don't think it's something I'd use all the time.
I set up a Mediaportal Server running from my main NAS which has a Dual DVB-S2 tuner. With a little messing I now have full live TV on the tablet anywhere. I got the 16GB wifi version so I use my phones 3G for it when I'm out and about. I also set up a web server running from the same backend that links into my Movie and TV show database. With Dolphin and the Flash plugin, you can get Live TV, Video, TV Shows and Music from your home server/NAS in a browser. The easiest way is to set up Mediaportal and MPextend, then just use aMPdroid on the tablet. It's not a 5 minute set up by no means but worth it in the end.

Oh yes I'll try at some point. Trying to find a driver that will run it will be the hard part. Maybe when the CM people and Ubuntu really start digging into these devices we may get a working one but up to now I've had no luck. I have a few old USB types to try so I'm not limited to Hauppauge.
I must repeat what I said before though.. With the tools we have these days, there's no point in having bits hanging out of any wireless enabled device. The benefits just aren't there. I can get any UK channel on my tablet nigh on anywhere that has 3G if I wish. I don't worry about DVB-T/S signal strength as it's fed from my home aerial or dish. And as a bonus I get my film and TV collection too. From what you guys have said, you have the hardware and the software for both PC and Android is free so you might as well put it to use until it can be tested direct in the tablet.... Or that's the way I see it
I'll let you know if I find anything out and we will see if we can get one in the tablet running.

[Q] Nexus 9 for presentations

I was wondering if anyone is using the N9 for presentations like PowerPoint? I have found that the N9 does not support Mircast or hardwire connections to projectors and I am completely taken back by this. I would never have expected this from Google, especially since they marked the N9 as a productivity tool.
I was using my Samsung Note 10.1 but it is stuck on 4.1.4 or something like that I have not rooted obviously. But it casts to Mircast and it own Samsung cast system. The problem is that it can not take advantage of the new PPT apps like the upgrade Polaris. You need at least 4.2.
So now I have a great device that can use the office apps (the real office is come soon for free) and I can not project.
Anyone have some uplifting thoughts on this?
dave
do a search for "Chromecast without WiFi" I could swear I read something recently that will let you cast directly to the CC. also.. you could consider one of the travel router options that let you have your own local firewalled WiFi setups/repeaters.. run about 40$. I'm already looking into them and will report back what I find.

I actually put in a couple of chromecasts to the TV screens at work for this purpose. wish google came up with an offline feature for stuff like this.

What is a good android box?

Hey,
I was thinking about an Android box thingy and there are many cheap options.
I would like to play around with some emulators (PPSSPP included) with a USB controller I have and watch some anime ^^ I'd also not like to spend in excess of ~$35 (max $45)
Any good cheap boxes that can do that? Preferably that support Lolipop since I love its UI.
I've seen ones with Amlogic S802,812 and 912 CPUs and RK3188 and 3368 CPUs.
Which one is decent? eBay links would be appreciated ^^ Thanks! (OpenGL ES3 support would also be nice.)
RK3188 drives my LighInTheBox mk809iv. It's got 2GB RAM, 8GB EMMC, a full sized USB 2 port, hdmi, microSDXC port, runs KitKat 4.4, comes with Kodi pre-installed. I rooted it with Kingoroot.com, so that I could run a vnc server on it. I remote control it with my phone which running the free Valence app, or sometimes I remote it with Screen Sharing on my Mac. It plays nicely, and I get decent enough Wifi speeds. It's run everything I have thrown at it. A quick search for mk809iv will bring up a whole lot of these devices, even some with 16gb EMMC. Some will arrive pre-rooted, others will not. Look for Realtek Wifi for best compatibility if you intend to flash it (which requires a PC). It is fun to play with, but looking back on the experience, I'd rather have had a small Android phone with MHL/hdmi-output, as it would have been much easier to set up if there was a screen on the device itself. Just a thought. Used Galaxy s3 handsets are getting cheap enough now, with the same functionality. Cheers!

Yep! Any suggestions regarding TV apps, websites with TV shows, forums for TV boxes and input devices? I don't really think the bundled remote would be something I'd wanna use. I've seen wireless small keyboards with trackpads, do you know anything about them?

The forum I use for my Android devices is usually XDA, right here.
I used a USB keyboard and a mouse to set mine up.
For the record, I rooted my MK809 IV, which has an rk3188 SOC running KitKat 4.4, with Kingo Root, to allow me to run a VNC server, because I use a free Android app called Valence on my phone as a wifi trackpad/mouse and use my phone's keyboard to type on the Android TV. Root allows me to use the free RemoDroid app to control my Android TV from my phone or tablets from anywhere in my house.
Kodi comes on mine, and it's a free app in the Play Store anyway. I tried to set it up last April, but it kept crashing. If you are into that sort of thing, it is a very capable media server for sure.
For playing local files, I think MX Player is the champion app.
I ultimately bought a Logitech k700 keyboard with built-in trackpad to use with mine - I purchased it refurbished on a Newegg special for fifteen dollars! I take that keyboard everywhere with me. I love it. I prefer to use an actual mouse, but since I bought the k700, I have not missed mice enough to actually plug one in. I like it because it is nearly full-sized, but still compact, and it comes already set up to use a single USB wireless dongle. Range has been great, and after almost a year I am still on the first set of batteries.
Just today I was looking into purchasing the remote that came with your TV box, so please, let me know if you like it.
I bought a Hubman USB 2.0 hub in case I need more ports. It seemed like a good idea to have it, but I have not actually plugged it into the Android stick yet. I'm sure it will support a mouse, keyboard & usb thumb-drive just fine.
I don't want to go too far off-topic, so if it's okay with you, I'll pm you a list of apps I use for video. Nothing seems to slow down my aging rk3188 quad. Your rk3368 octa-core is going to be fantastic! Would you please post a link to the auction? Even if the auction is closed, I'd love to take a look at the device. The price you paid is unbelieveable!
