[Q] Nexus 5 - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

is Nexus 5 really a good choice as sumone told me its a battery drainer..... had a very low battery backup
i shud buy or wait for Nexus 6??

It's not the best on battery, but there are plenty of people that have no trouble getting through the day with normal to moderate use. If you plan on playing a lot of graphic intensive games then plan on keeping a charger around. There are plenty of ways to monitor and control battery life as well. There isn't a phone out that you won't find someone complaining about battery life but as much as anything it just matters how you use it, what apps you use, settings, etc that really dictate battery life.

Install CyanogenMod on it. Stock ROM is a battery killer

Try them all. It all depends on how you use your phone. There's no magical rom with great battery life.
If you use your phone a lot, go for a ROM which isn't overclocked.
If you want the longest idle time before recharge, I think you should set the "conservative" governor as a screen off policy and you will be fine. Of course you can also disable features such as data but you will loose many useful features of your phone. Unlike what some people says, disabling GPS doesn't improve battery life as it isn't used except when you start an application which use it.
Battery life is most affected by the screen light.
And with every rom you have to callibrate your battery. Most people with poor battery life haven't done this.
The Froyo roms are the best options because the are faster and less stressing for the juice.

They all have the same battery life (give or take 5 minutes)
All pretty similar.
Use an underclocked kernel, play around with brightness settings or use an app such as ultimate juice / juice defender to regulate 3g / wifi usage

How to callibrate my battery??
My Hero just lasts two Days with 691mhz Flykernel 11 and Elelinux 2.1 and no 3g.
I just hear a lot of music with it, connect it a few to wifi and play some games in the school.....
How long does your batteriest last?

You say two days without a charge with occasional wifi use (wifi on, screen on, phone signal on), and games playing (sound on screen on, processor busy) like it's a bad thing...
Since the mid 2000s phone capabilities have been surpassing battery performance at a remarkable rate. With the advent of the iphone and the gaining popularity android smartphones, phone feature demands have exploded while battery technology just isn't anywhere near providing the kind of battery life we expected on our dumb phones, ie, don't bother packing a charger for a two week holiday if you charge up before you leave.
This is a large reason why new technology is being created with more efficient manufacturing processes, smaller dies, etc etc, as it is easier to reduce power consumption at this time than it is to build slim, cheap, high capacity batteries.

[Q] Improved battery life with root?

Hi, I love my 3VO but my biggest issue with it is battery life.. I use my phone a lot for music, texting, facebook, etc.. and can't get it to last me a full day. I seem to get 8-10 hours out of my battery, if I back off on usage I probably get 12 or a little better. is there much to gain by rooting? my old phone was a rooted hero, which stock the phone hardly worked.. so root was almost required, and made the phone so much better. I've considered rooting the 3vo, but it's just worked well enough that I haven't made time to mess with it and don't necessarily have a reason to. any input for me?
For battery life, I run MIUI. Yes root it. De bloat it at a minimum. Toss a few ROMs and kernels around. I like my Evo4G more than this phone until it was rooted.
Eternity is a sweet sense ROM by the way. Not great on battery, bit it is a best!
E3D'ed... Booyah!
Battery
Hi
Root your phone, install clockwork mod recovery, flash clockwork recovery to save your rooted stock rom.
Next drain your battery until its dead, recharge to full and reboot into recovery.
From there you you will need to wipe your battery stats, found under advanced. Reboot.
Drain battery once again and charge to full.

Oops.. My bad.
I might have to give rooting it a shot, my friends with iphones and similar usage seem to get at least a couple hours more than I do. could just be the tiny screens they have to deal with.. but if I could make mine last longer with a different rom I might have to give it a shot. As of right now my phone has been on the fritz a little bit.. and I wanna get that taken care of before I try rooting it. I'm sure sprint won't be too quick to replace a rooted phone.
Installed synergy and with Virtuous_OC-PC my battery life has doubled compared to stock htc sense. It appears to manage turning on and off services better then the stock, as well as under clocking when it's asleep. I really notice it when the battery is low, the power save settings seem to really kick in there.
Yes, absolutely root your phone. Best thing I have done! Check out CleanROM by Scott at www.scottsroms.com. Great battery life - I average about 24 hours with light to moderate usage and 12+ hours with moderate to heavy usage.
Just try out a few ROMS and see which one you like and runs good on your phone. Even with the same ROM some phones have can have issues and others don't.

[Q] Moving back from iOS to Android (phone recommendations?)

Hi there. I have an iphone4s and I'm quite happy with it, except for the fact that I hate Apple. So I want to move back to Android. Things that I like about the iphone is the mail app and. mostly, battery life (battery consumption when screen is locked is superb, and that is the phone status usually). I'm not going to use the phone for games, but for calls, whatsapp, twitter, g+, music (lots of music playing), some video and gps navigation. I would like to ask people for recommendations on a good terminal based on (most important to less important):
1.- Battery life (I give importance to battery life when idle)
2.- Fast processor
3.- Fast charging
4.- Support for external storage (microSD)
5.- Cyanogenmod compatible
6.- If possible, the terminal sould allow me to replace the battery
Please do not comment on things like switch off wifi when not browsing the web, or switch to 2G when not using 3G to improve battery life. I do not do that now and I have power for 36 straight hours with my iphone. I'm not looking for workarounds for bad battery life. I'm trying to have the same battery performance I have on my iphone on a phone with Android without switching things on and off.
Thanks so much for your help
Ignacio
The pimp my Rom scripts for Android devices works also good for battery improvement.
But all you need is the Samsung s3 dude. Root it and script it with PMR.
Just lose the freaking Apple dude, you will be fine XD

Hello, welcome to droid! I'm surprised at your iPhone battery life. My friends 4S is always running out of juice.
Anyway, recommendations are hard as it also depends on your hand size and preference. I would say Samsung Galaxy S3 or Note II. They both allow battery removal and micro SD and have fast processors, I have an S3 and it charges fast. I currently use the SuperNexus ROM (cm10) and its excellent. For me the idle battery life is excellent, but much improved when rooted and using an app like Juice Defender Ultimate. This saves the faffing of turning WiFi on and off as it does it for you based on training with your nearby cell tower. The app saves juice from adjusting your CPU speed while idle too. There are quite a few features and once setup it does everything automatically, just pick your preferences first.
I use international version of the S3 btw. I'm going to say avoid HTC One X it has a smaller battery and no micro SD option.
Android is great for music playing. Not sure of the iPhones offering as far as equalizers but there are many choices on droid. I recommended the PowerAmp app.
Hope this helps you!
Funny, its excect the way around for me: hate Iphone, like Apple.
Thank you so much for your answers. I will probably go with the SGS3 or the Note II. My brother has a spare SGS2 that I'm going to test with cm10. I know battery is quite worse than SGS3, so if I'm happy with the SGS2 I will be definitely happy with either of the other.
Ignacio
If battery life is important for you, you might also look at an extended battery.
Seidio offers a 3500mAh unit for the S3 (stock is 2100mAh, so it's more than half-again as large). It does add a bit of bulk though and will prevent you from using any case except their cases.
Good luck in getting 36hrs out of any Android phone (with no power management regime) - it just isn't going to happen. Except for maybe a Razr Maxx or Note 2.
Just bought a s3 ,and im pretty happy with it ,just leave you time to understand your phone ...

Like I suggested before. If you need battery life to the max, you should install the Pimp My Rom Scripts. Only thing you need it's a init.d script supported Rom and root. Try it on the sgs2... you will see for yourself.

He said screen is off most the time. I get 4 days out if my defy if it's mostly on standby. 2 days easy with normal usage, and that's only a 1500mah battery. I get a 16 hours on my amaze with 2.5 hours of screen time and syncing email every 5 mins. The screen is the battery hog on the amaze. Also to the op. I know you said no turning WiFi off, but I have an app. Smart WiFi enabler. It automatically turns your WiFi off and on based on location and does save battery without sacrificing being in WiFi when you want to be.

Hows battery life?

I don't have this phone but i have the Sprint Galaxy S 2 Epic 4g touch
I've seen some roms showing 80% battery life with 1 day and still going battery life and it got me curious.
SO how is your phones battery life? I know my phone lasts me a whole day and end of story...
You have a different phone as you already know, therefore a separate forum in which you can discuss about things like these.
Anyways, battery life is completely subjective to each individual. It depends on each phone even if they're the same model. Number of apps, how you use your phone, and so many things else need to be considered, not to mention the rom and kernel tweaks.
To get the most out your battery (apart from completely switching off the phone) you have to monitor all the above mentioned things and how they affect battery life. A good way to start is to install betterbatterystats available on the author's thread here (or play store version which you should consider if you find the free one helpful). It will tell you the wake locks holding your device from deep sleep and apps draining your battery and going rogue.

Advice regarding custom roms

Hi everyone, I have had a Poco F1 for the last three years, and I'm not planning on change it for another phone anytime soon, but the thing is, that I'm trying to get into genshin impact, but due to work, I don't have much time to play it at home, so I would like to play on my phone on breaks or on the bus, but there's two problems,
The first is performance, the game really chugs a lot even on low settings precisely when I move the camera, and I've seen a lot of people on the internet that can play with better settings with better performance.
The second is the battery, after a battery replacement the phone is not that bad on normal use, but when gaming, it drains a lot of battery, I think I can't even get two hours without charging it while playing, and I would like to get the same kind of battery life I was getting on when i first got the phone. (I remember playing PUBG, when I first got it, for hours without charging it)
After the long introduction, I would like to get some kind of advice on what custom rom should I flash on my phone regarding this:
-It has to have better overall performance, since the gaming performance is so lackluster and poor.
-It has to have better battery life (yes, I know that balancing the two is kind of difficult, and I've seen a lot of performance specific roms and kernels but I really don't know about the battery life on those), and keep in mind that this is my only phone so I would like to have a phone that can last me one day, on normal use of course.
-It has to support some of the features that the stock rom has, like face and fingerprint unlock, and notch support.
-And lastly it would be essential that the rom supports safenet (since I'd be using banking apps), and google applications baked in. (I would as well not like to root the device).
When researching, I always come to these two, the Pixel Experience and the Corvus OS, but I know there's a ton more out there.
So I would be happy if someone gave me some kind of advice on this topic.
Thanks.
Edit: I´ve never done any flashing of custom roms on any phone so i dont have experience.

You can find everything you need in my POCO F1 Ultimate Collection & Guides. (Scroll down for guides)
About ROMs, I recommend you to pick one the awarded ROMs. Keep in mind none of A12 ROMs have Face Unlock (yet). If you really need Face Unlock choose A11 ROM but A12 is much smoother and better overall and support is active.
Carrying around a powerbank isn't possible? Gaming drains a lot of battery... Could be that Genshin Impact is more taxing on the battery that PUBG. I remember 25% active drain in the latter.
Regarding battery life crDroid is fantastic but the stock Optimus Drunk kernel in A11 wasn't geared towards hardcore gaming. OD kernel is no longer being updated for F1 and in A12 the default is the generic? "perf" kernel. You could try a few of the custom kernels available for A12.
Yeah, I could carry a power bank, but the most pressing issue is the lackluster performance.
When I referred PUBG, I wasn't comparing it with genshin impact, I was comparing the battery life I had in the beginning playing that specific game and the battery life I have now in the same situation.
I have been looking into arrowOS, in Android 11, it seems to have a decent performance increase in relation with stock with better RAM management and good battery life.
I also saw a bunch of comparisons between MIUI 11 and MIUI 12, and the battery life on the first "reminds" me of the kind of battery life I was getting when I got the phone.

Did you replace with the official battery? Majority of the third-party batteries are rubbish. Even in case of the official battery it's possible to lose out on 10% of the rated capacity due to the aging process, 2-4%/year. It's difficult to get the same battery life in changing workloads like games anyway.
