Unsure whether Soft or Hard bricked. Help! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, really in the need for some help and advice. I recently tried to update from cyanogenmod 10.2 to 11 however on flashing a message came up saying I had to repair my recovery. After clicking yes it got stuck into a recovery loop. So I tried flashing a new recovery using Odin since I couldn't transfer anything. However that seemed to have made it worse, Its now stuck on the S3 logo screen. Been through a couple attempts to repair however everytime I attempt to flash it just gets stuck, leaving it for half an hour to an hour i remove it. I'm pretty lost for what to do, can anyone help?
Also, to add more problems my power button sticks. I dont know if thats whats haulting the flashing?
Thanks!

Its soft brick. Try this guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2323847
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA Free mobile app

But fix your power button first, interrupted flash can result in hard brick.

I cant use this fix, I cant access my phone to put anything on the SD and it seems like I am unable to flash anything with Odin. I'll try and break it down to fix the sticky power button but I'm clueless to what to try now?

This problem is most probably caused by the power button being stuck thus restarting your phone. Follow wat boomboomer said and fix your power button and see if it solves the problem.

Like boomboomer and I said, try to fix the power button problem first.

Yes I have opened it up and fixed that. However I need some other way of resetting my binary counter since I cant access my phone. Any way through Odin?

No, there is no other way. Fix the boot loop first by flashing a full stock room in Odin. Factory reset afterward in recovery.

[Q] Will not boot - flashing black screen

Received a brand new Ace yesterday, and immediately rooted it with super one click with no problems.
However I then tried to run the 'Galaxy Ace Unlock apk' which I'd found elsewhere.
It generated an unlock pin, but after rebooting it stuck on the Galaxy Ace flash screen. After 5 minutes I pulled the battery out, waited, then rebooted. Now it doesn't even get to the Galaxy Ace screen when switched on.
The screen backlight comes on (with a black screen) for a couple of seconds, then off, then on - but it never gets any further.
So far I've tried
- Flashing Stock Froyo via Odin
- Flashing VillainRom via Odin
In both cases the phone enters download mode, Odin completes all steps without error, but on reboot I am left with the black screen of death again!
Anything else I could try?
I have the same problem.

Just send it to the service center.
No other recovery method is know.
I have been in every forum arond for this kinda brick and there is no solution for YOU to do. Also there is absolutely no way for Samsung to see either say that after the first boot the battery went dead and it never started again. It will be covered by your warranty and brand new ace! Apk/sim bricked my phone.
Unlock Apk also bricked my phone in the same manner.
The app generating the code is not the problem on it's own, it's when you put the "other" Sim card in and reboot that does the damage.
I got a buzz when i could still get Download Mode and Odin gave me a PASS when i reflashed, but alas the phone never rebooted and it still flashed black at me.
I'm trying everything to bring it back to life before it goes to the Service Centre and i have to give them some blag as to why it's bricked.
Other than Download Mode i can get "Emergency Dload Mode"(ARM9) & RAMDUMP.

Even Samsung don't have an easy way to repair it, hence they replace the mainboard to fix the issue.

you are really not giving a lot of details here...all you are saying you tried installing a rom and then it froze halfway..
Are you rooted firstly?
If you are have you flashed CF-root kernel?
How did you try to install the rom?
More info and then more people can help you out buddy..see if you can get into recovery and restart your phone.
well... if you've tried "every" (its not like there are a lot) button combination... then just go buy a jig from ebay and force it into download mode...

Nothing from what you said would help..
He obviously flashed it with Odin, and he said he's getting a yellow triangle with a computer behind it..
From what I understood, he could get into download mode.
So just boot into download mode and flash stock ROM. That should do it.

dont think its coincidence they are increasing after the american variants have been released. People need to check what model they have before flashing things.

its ok and same goes by my post as well buddy..we all been in his position one way or the other
1st - Your phone is not bricked if it show an image. Whatever image it is. The only real software way to brick your phone is to flash bad bootloader or stop a bootloader while they are being flashed. However, Bootloader are flashed first. So if your phone stoped half way, you should not have trouble too much.
Remove the battery from your phone for like a minute, then reboot your phone in download mode (vol- + home + power and when the phone light up, release power.) Then flash another rom from odin.
Also, what rom did you used ? If you flashed a rom for another phone, then you might have flashed bootloader for that phone on yours, which is bad. In this case you will surely need a JIG.
sorry im new to this whole rooting/flashing thing. i downloaded the lightning rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1095274
i have never rooted or doneanthing to my s2 before. all i did was follow the instructions on the page and thought it would be all good? it froze about a quarter of the way there in odin so i just took my phone out.
I usually find from this state I can get back to bootloader or download states
push and hold vol+ and home then power for bootloader
push and hold vol- and home then power for download
sometimes the phone can seem to freeze a little or even die (this happened to me loads on the galaxy s and once already on the s2) and removing battery sim etc or attaching the charger can jog it
however as other have said a JIG is your friend if for no other reason that even if you recover without it, custom roms up the rom count which some twitchy carriers might invalidate your warranty for, the jig will reset this
you can get them from ebay for less than £3 delivered, or there are instructions on this site for making them yourself if you are so inclined.
simply search 'galaxy s2 jig' on ebay mine was delivered today from portugal as I am way too lazy to make one and only wanted a counter reset anyway

Like said here before, if you installed CWM on an unsafe Kernel (usually Stock Kernel present on 4.0.4 and 4.1.2 Stock Firmware) and after that wiped your data/cache etc. there is a good probability that you hard-bricked your device. Not even JTAG will help, if it`s the eMMC hardbrick.
Try to get into download mode and flash a Stock 4.0.3 Firmware and if you can`t then try a USB Jig to get into download mode and if that doesn`t work you probably hardbricked your device as described above
Read this on more info about eMMC superbrick:

I love comments like this. Well if you don`t read properly how and what to flash at what time to your device and just do as you think is right then you are going to end up with a hardbrick. That`s nobodies fault but yours. Why did you buy an Android phone in the first place if you can handle an IPhone better?

If you have an hardbrick and you can`t even get into download mode, what do you expect people to do? We are normal human beings here, there are no miracles here. If you have an hardbrick, you can try to repair it via Jtag or send it to a Samsung service center if you are still on warranty but if you complain about Android and how much it sucks you won`t be making many friends here, since this is an Android community.

[Q] S3 stuck on endless reboot

So this morning and last night my phone was working perfectly until it decided to reboot, but since then it endlessly reboots show the the "Galaxy SIII GTI9300" screen. It comes up, goes black, then it shows it again. Ive looked around for other fixes but i can't enter my recovery or download mode. When entering into recover, it works for about 1 second then the phone reboots so I am unable to do anything, I can enter download for a few seconds but pressing the volume up or down to continue doesn't do anything.
I am using foxhound 2.4 and Siyah 1.9.1
I don't have an overclock, I've tested another battery so I know that isn't the issue.
I haven't done anything to it so I can't think of a reason it would be doing this. How can I fix it?
looks like sds
Any fix for it? I can't access recovery or download mode and my PC doesn't pick up my phone, should I take it in for repairs? Will they repair it with the custom ROM and kernel?
send it in, looks like it's the only option
From what I've read about SDS, I am by no means an expert, you wouldn't even be able to interact with your phone. The fact that you see the boot logo means that it isn't SDS. I am not sure what I'd do though, as you cannot enter download mode and flash a stock ROM from there.
If you send it in to service, I guess they will find out about the flash counter and modified status and all, and you would have to pay. On the other hand, if that is what it needs it might be worth it.
Sorry I'm not more helpful...

Do the red exclamation point appear at any time?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA Premium HD app
So I sent my phone in for repairs and somehow they managed to fix it and get it back to stock. Before I gave it in I never had a red exclamation. As soon as I rooted it when I got it back it now has the red exclamation. Today my phone entered a bootloop doing the exact same thing but eventually worked. Not sure if it was the ROM. I'm considering flashing back to stock just to be safe. Doesn't seem like I can get rid of that exclamation without doing so. They sorted it out for free. I'm just worried they will say my warranty has been void next time

[Q] Galaxy s3 screen bootloop

Hey guys,
I have a galaxy s3 (I9300) and I've had it rooted for some time now. I started using CyanogenMod 10.2 nightlies a few months ago and they've mostly been fine. The odd issue comes up but I've been able to work it out. So, a few hours ago my phone just turned off of its own accord and started to bootloop, but on the "Samsung Galaxy S3 GT-19300" screen, not the CyanogenMod screen (to clarify, this screen comes up first then the cyanogenmod one usually). I've tried booting into recovery (CWM 6) but it just shows the CWM boot logo thing (that cog with the hat) and then loops back to the galaxy s3 page. I've also tried putting it in download mode, and it seems to stay on the warning page longer than it does anywhere else, but it wont let me actually put in it download mode from there.
I had a look around google and saw people have had the same problem, but everything I could find was when people had flashed a new rom/kernel etc. and something had gone wrong in the process. The weird thing about mine is that I haven't changed anything, even downloaded any new apps, for maybe a week, so it's not like something suddenly changed. I also wasn't using it when it started, it was just sitting on the table next to me.
Usually I can work these things out, but I'm stumped here. Any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Nope, if I press the volume up button to go into it, it just goes back to the bootloop. I'll try the battery thing though, thanks!
Nope, it didnt work, I left it out for maybe half an hour and nothings changed :/ anyone else got any ideas?
SDS thread and BootLoop identical questions posted .
What does Product Code say in download mode .
But if you cannot get to download mode then you need a service centre repair .
looks like u are facing SDA but a bit diffrend than a normal SDS.. mine still can go into download mode with blank product name..
If product name is blank in download mode then you got sudden death, consider a phone as a brick. Nothing will help, including repartitioning.
You need to contact service centre.
I'll check it in a minute, but if it is bricked, will any service center actually help me seeing as it's rooted and all?

AFAIK if it's sudden death then it's not possible to detect root and other modified things, or in other words - nobody has money to prove that you have been using unofficial firmware .

Ahhhh, well that is handy then
In terms of a service centre, will samsung have a list of them somewhere so I can find one near me?
So I contacted samsung and they gave me the link to book into a service centre etc, but I just realised that when I try to go into recovery mode, the CWM recovery logo comes up before going back to bootloop. Is there any way to get rid of that so that my root is completely untraceable?

If you can't flash anything with Odin (stock software) then you're screwed. Eventually you can try to enter recovery and flash "eraser" of recovery, but this requires working recovery... So if you actually can enter recovery then you can also flash anything, which will literally delete everything.
In other case, no, no way. But if you're lucky enough you may break it just by leaving your phone on for some hours in bootloop, haha.

Is there any way to wipe it with magnets or anything? hahah I'm clutching at straws now, but otherwise I'm just left with an expensive paperweight so I'm trying to find anything I can

To be honest think twice before physically crashing your internal memory, as it may void your warranty at all.
I'd try flashing stock firmware through odin, if it doesn't work I'd try flashing anything through recovery. If both of these methods fail just leave your phone in bootloop and hope that it'll automatically destroy everything...
Seriously though, you can either physically destroy internal memory or leave it in bootloop and hope for the best, eventually send them device in current status. Up to you, because you won't have a possibility to do anything else.

If I send it back to them as it is now it'll take them about 20 seconds I reckon before they see the CWM logo, realise its rooted and send it straight back, so I dont know what I'm gonna do hahah
