Hello all, as I mentioned earlier I succesfully flash my TF201 to KitKat 4.4.4-CROMBi-kk-RC2 that is dated or relesed on 8/23/14. As mentioned ran into some unforseen stuff but hey its how we live and grow. Just a couple of things that as a newbie was not aware of.
1) I thought that Titianium backup was going have as part of the install. I do not seem to have it not a big deal I will download it
2) I careless did not read...again...I careless DID NOT READ the settings during the setup regarding F2FS options and other choices
3) I foolishly saved all my apps and data using Asus's appback program and now would like to restore those apps & data. But did not save the .apk file I checked on this forum since othere have done the same and was able to get one but the app will not install. any ideas

My Thunderbolt received an OTA update last week and keeps rebooting. I have ClockworkMod Recovery so the Install fails. I cleared the Cache with CWM and restarted the phone like it suggests in other posts elsewhere. I get a failed update message, I cancel out of it and reboot the phone. I also used Titanium Backup to Freeze "Update" and "Updater", but the phone keeps self booting into the OTA update every day . I searched for an update.zip and cannot find one on the SD card.
Can anyone suggest how to stop the phone from updating/rebooting everyday? I cannot seems to find the answer anywhere.
Thanks and I wish everyone a safe holiday!

Just to confirm, are you rooted but on the stock rom? If so, you should be able to find some threads to go on from searching, but here are a couple where people got the update install while rooted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330325
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1324682
Sorry I forgot to mention it
Yes, I'm rooted, I'll check out the links.
more than likely you wont have an update.zip but rather an RUU. Remove the RUU from the SD card and see how that works. If I was having this problem I would do a full wipe on the phone backup my full SD card contents and format the SD card and flash a custom rom with CWM. I never understand what the point of rooting is if you are not going to flash a custom rom. Are you afraid? Worried about bricking? I just don't get it. Put the new MIUI on it. You will be pleased.
I installed Liquid ROM 3.1 and it's working like a charm. I was concerned about the 3G/4G compatability problems that most custom ROMS seem to have.
Using Titanium Backup Pro I backed up all my apps then restored them after installing Liquid ROM and re-setup the desktop and all is well.

Really? The ability to fix things like security holes, use ad filters, make complete, easily restorable backups, install a certificate for a private CA, or just have fairly complete control over hardware you've purchased isn't enough?

I was actually broken hearted that I was compelled in install a custom rom to avoid the problems the op has described. Everything "works" in standard rom. When you go custom you get lots of fun new features but you always lose something..... Could be vzw vvm or nfl live or fast gps lock or photo effects in gallery but it seems there is always someting you lose.

Hi guys. been a while since I rooted my legend..
After jumping from htc`s -> lg(crap) -> samsung`s to motorola razr I`ve decided to stay. I love this phone, been a while since I got this feeling. It seems the manufacturers are releasing new models every week now.
But I want to root my Razr so I can freeze some bloatware. Hate all that crap the manufacturers keep shoving down our throats.
But when reading page up and page down in these forums I get confused about all the abbrivations and terms. Could somebody point me where to look or explain a little?
I`ve visited the faq, wiki, android general and couldnt find any "low level" answers..
-root, will i be able to receive OTA (ICS when it arrives)
-bootloaders, safestrap, bootstrap etc.. what does these mean?
-what do i have to do to keep it safe and "toy around a little" without bricking it? cwm/titanium/nandroid backup, do i need all these? what is the way to go, can i do a complete backup with all apps and settings even in widgets?
sorry for all the questions, but the search functions and threads are quite overwhelming..
and thumbs up for all devs and people that make XDA so great.. i am happy to donate via paypal to these people! keep up the good work..
(if i posted this in the worng forum, i apologize in advance)

You should post un Q&A forum.
But i'll answer to you anyway.
so if you're still in 2.3.5 it's really easy to root just head to this thread:
Windows :::

Linux:::
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342567
1) Root wont break OTA (it will if you install custom ROM)
2) With this root method you have BOOTSTRAP, wich install custom recovery(cwm) i dont really know the difference between this and safestrap, i used only bootstrap.
3) The better way (in my opinion) is to use this root method, install bootstrap and reboot to recovery and do a backup. After this you can play around with titanium backup freeze bloatware etc...
Have fun with your razr it's a master piece!
Thread moved to General Forums.
It is simple, If your Thread title can be written in form of a question, it does not belong to development section.
Have a nice day.
thanks for answer.
good about receiving OTA`s..
what is bootstrap exactly?
on the rooting you provided the link to, the OP mentions it is adviced to an adb pull/system?
also, is the backup stored on the SD or internal? should i make a "goldcard" or is that only for model specific phones?
thanks..

Boot strap is a way of running new firmwares, without actually installing it to the system folders/partitions. A little like running two OS:es on the same computer.
Pulling adb system is doing a backup of your system folder, since there are almost no .sbf files out, recovering can be difficult if you delete the wrong things.
(an .sbf is essentially a "recovery cd" for your phone.)
Safest way to do it, is simply:
Don't delete apps in system folder. Only use "freeze" in whatever root uninstaller you decide to use.
Yahoo and blur apps must not be altered, you can't make calls without them as it is now.
The most important tweak is IMO, killing Google maps, as it runs in the background.
A Goldcard is unnecessary on this phone, since it has the "app to sd" partition built in.
ed: No automatic backup is done, it's up to you. (I didn't do one and had to reinstall with a .sbf) >_<
thanks for the excellent explanation..
so bootstrap makes the system files avaiable and untouched as long as i dont delete them?
also killing google maps, then i would not have actual google maps or navigation on my phone? i use this application now and then..
Am I right in saying that once you have rooted and have CWM recovery that you could do a NANDroid backup as soon as you have rooted, and copy this comewhere safe on your pc in order that if you make a boo boo and it won't OTA update, you can then do a TB of all your current apps / data, boot into CWM, restore your NANDroid backup which should take your phone "back in time" to the point just after you rooted, and restore your apps / data after installing TB from the market, THEN receive the OTA?
edit:
ok, i`ve rooted the Razr, installed bootstrap and adb pull / system.
but one thing i think i might have done wrong..?
i`ve enabled safe system in the recovery menu. and it took a backup of my system to the emmc..
then i rebooted and nothing happened. held down power and volume down for 6 seconds. a little flicker came and was able to go back to safe menu and disable the safe mode.
booted up normal.
im guessing i am missing something here. a partition to boot or something?
edit 2. okay, i obviously need a rom.. can i use my original rom?

Sounds about right, yep. =)
is it possible to get my 2.3.5 stock android out of the phone as an update.zip so i can use it as my 2nd system with bootstrap?
got the bootstrap succesfully, but got no rom to play with..
Hi, Ive been trying to find this info for weeks and am coming up with nothing.
Lets say a dev takes google backup out of their rom.
Im talking about the thing that runs when you first start up a newly flashed phone and it asks if you want to backup with google.
It then proceeds to install your apps you had installed, as well as your wallpaper and also your saved WiFi passwords and networks(which is what I love it for).
I tried replacing the googbackuptransport.apk and .odex. Apparently thats not enough though(Im not even sure if those are what make it work).
So my question is, what do I need to do to get google backup back onto a ROM thats had it removed?
I posted this in the EVO 3d section, but havent got a good answer.
I have been flashing different roms made for different carriers and I keep coming across people with the same issues in every thread. I thought it would be a good idea to have a list of common problems people seem to be having while flashing along with their solutions. This will not only be an easier/faster way for the flasher to solve his problem, but a way to prevent unnecessary clutter in rom threads with questions that have been asked repeatedly.
Feel free to post any issues you com across and/or any solutions you have to offer. This post will be updated frequently to help you guys out.
Before I get started I just want to stress the importance of doing a clean wipe before flashing a new rom. I have used this analogy in another thread, but I think of roms as women. If you want a flawless transition from one to another without any drama, they must never find out about each other. This means erase all proof of the previous one's existence. Everybody's 4g/gps issues would be non-existent if they would wipe their phones properly. When switching roms, apart from the normal wipe it is also necessary to delete the "Android" folder in your internal/external storage. If you like to play it safe, wiping them both after a backup gives you best results. This is because conflicting data stored on your card from the previous rom can screw with the new one. For those of you with sdcards bigger than my bank account who don't have that much time to spare, just deleting the android folder should be enough.
Problem
My GPS doesn't work.
Solution 1: Most likely you flashed a new rom on top of another one. As said above just wiping is not enough. GPS information is stored on your internal/external storage. This can be erased by either wiping it clean before flashing the new rom or simply deleting the "android" folder.
Solution 2: If that doesn't work (which it should), many people have had success with an app called GPS Status and Toolbox from the appstore. After downloading use the settings menu to release GPS data and fix a new lock.
Solution 3: This one's my least favorite, but some have flashed an old rom that previously had GPS working, got a GPS lock, and then reflashed the new rom.
Problem
My 4g doesn't work.
Solution 1: Always check the OP in the rom thread. Find out if the rom is based on a modem other than the one you have.
Solution 2: If you are using a rom created for another carrier there are two ways you can go about fixing 4g. The easiest way is to install scott's verizon patch HERE. The harder way is to make the required changes yourself which you can learn how to do HERE.
Problem
My apps are acting weird after I restore a backup.
Solution: Most likely you are restoring from Titanium Backup. It is a known fact that restoring data using Titanium Backup can cause a number of issues. Restore only the apks of the apps you need. Restoring data (never restore old system data on a new rom!) will only cause conflicts. If you absolutely have to keep data for a particular app restore only those that you need one by one if you are sure that no system data is being brought along with it. It may be more tedious, but it will keep you from having issues.
Problem
I keep getting a text message from "6250" saying "VZWNMN: 1" or something of that nature.
Solution: This is an issue with backup assistant sending repeated queries to your phone via text message. To stop this from occuring log into your account at www.verizonwireless.com and disable backup assistant completely.
More issues and simple fixes which will be posted as I find the time. But these are the top 4 I come across about 20 times a day so they are the ones that readily stand out in my mind.
Hi guys,
i'm still very new to this whole Android world and learning each day so please help me understand this problem i'm having. My phone is i9305 (EU model) just for reference.
First off i would like to know if this is possible to do without rooting or hacking since i like to be able to do OTA update and not mess to much with the phone if possible. If this is not possible then i could root. I actually tested rooting using the CF-Auto-root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273
So What i like to know is how can i backup and restore my phone is the same shape as it is today. I know that i cant back-up my private data without rooting and for now lets say i dont care about that part. What i like is to be able to backup all
- the applications
- my folders and how i can organized everything
- my desktop and how i have organized everything
- everything else like my background and other system settings.
I tried one to do a system restore+clear cache and my phone was reseted as my day one. When i connected to my google account it started downloading all my applications but sadly everything was just dumped in the application window without my previous structure so google dont save any settings. I did get my background and contact/calendar info back which was good.
So does anyone know how one can make a type of backup/restore i'm after?
I tested titanium backup and my Backup (when i had rooted) but didnt see an option for the mentioned features.
ps. Since i used iPhone i'm a bit spoiled, itunes does a great job doing a proper backup with the whole application/user data when making backup and the restore does restore everything like all your settings, background, folders where you organized the applications so i'm looking for something similar in Android. I had expected Kies to do this but it only saves basic stuff which seems to be the same as Google saves in the cloud (like contacts and such)
Grateful for any tips in this regard.
search, all the info is out there for you to read.
you'll need a custom recovery

Thanks i think with your keyword i mange to search for something meaningful

It seems the CWM is the way to go. Seems like a very powerful tools. One thing i still dont know is if it back up the whole OS or just the application/data ?
For instance if i do a backup when i'm on build AB and then install AC and clean my system and do a restore what do i end up with?
AC + all my applications and settings?
or
AB + all my applications and settings?
just search for the definition of nandroid backup, don't expect spoonfeeding

If you know the answer why not just say it? This type if attitude isn't really helping me (or others as i seen you do the same on other threads). I will search more on it still but please remember why we are in this section and forum in the first place. If i knew what to look for i wouldnt ask. I have searched on the topic it but with thousands of threads its pretty much impossible to get a clear understanding of things and as mentioned i'm not that familiar with Android world.
it might be hard to imagine for you but not everyone are familiar with the rooting and hacking world and all the abbreviations and much of what is discussed is hard to follow for beginners like me.
Atleast if you want to be helpful provide a link or something

Install a custom recovery like clock work mod to do a full back up (nandroid backup). Download Rom manager to install the recovery (must be rooted)
Back up EFS what you can find an app to do.
Use Titanium backup to back up Apps and data.
If you want to root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488
Ashley covered it all. Breakdown:
To back up your ROM you need a custom recovery installed. Boot into it and select backup. This backs up absolutely everything at that moment in time.
-Your ROM settings, apps including data and settings, messages received.
However you can't transfer your app data between ROMs because it's part of an entire image. So you use Titanium to back up (for apps+app data) which can be used all over the place.
You'll want this if you ever switch back to an old ROM as when you restore that ROM you can restore your Titanium to update the app data associated to that ROM.
You can back up your launcher layout if it's third party as it's an app. Touch wiz launcher I don't think so.
Exynos SIII; CM10.1
Don't use rom manager for CWM.. I've seen it brick more phones than anything.
well, I told you want to search for. check the first rule of xda
the easiest i would say would Titanium backup pro. phone needs to be rooted. you sync to dropbox and other clouds.
i always have two back ups one is Titanium and the other is twrp
@Ashley1987, 23Six, xSpeced,Farooq_Chicago
Thank you for your valuable input. I think the conclusion is that titanium backup pro is the best way to go since i want to be able to use different ROMs. And nandroid backup if i want to restore on the same ROM. I actually have bought titanium backup pro so i will "play" with that once i root my phone again (not a big fan of rooting and stuff since i can use OTA update but it seems like the only option).
do you know if i actually get back everything as i have today (including folder structure on desktop and application menu) ?
I spend lots of time on doing this so its good to know before i try to wipe my phone and try
@Glebun, i think someone else need to read the rules as well! if i had to guess i would say you just post to get a high number of post under your name. You dont contribute to the discussion and are somewhat hostile in your posts. This attitude isnt helpful and is not appreciated by anyone. So if you cant help i suggest you simply dont post. And i repeat what i said earlier that i had investigated but when you are new sometimes you need someone to push you in the right direction and advice you which is the point of this forum and section. As you see there are many people who helped me and i appreciate that. You on the other hand just complain and wasted yours and my time on nothing useful. Please think twice before posting next time.
