Hi folks. Havin an issue with my VZW S4. When i go into an app that uses gps (ie ingress) the gps won't initiate. if i toggle it on and off it turns on and locks immediately. Its done this 3 times now in the past few weeks, i've factory reset twice which fixes it and it just did it again. I've cleared data on ingress, maps and google search, trying to think of anything that uses location. i'm getting tired of setting up my phone again, any ideas? Thanks.
So figured out the issue. Its something with google play services. I went into the location menu and guess i just never noticed that google play services was down in the list of recent apps to use location. When the gps issue starts, if i go in and clear data on google play services, the gps kicks back in in a second or two. So not sure why, but thats the app thats causing it. At least i don't have to do a factory reset anymore when it happens. sigh.
Was this stock Rom, or custom Rom?

Had GPS issues but found it was "first find" issue so got plenty of sats and good location and lock after 10 mmin wait. Done with no WiFi, outside. Also done within range of Wifi.
My issue is that when I bring it inside and loose the GPS as expected indoors it goes from my current location on Maps to some where in Illinois 2000 miles away. Thought it may be a Wifi location issue but other devices I have that locate by WiFi show correct location. Tried clearing cache, cold start, rebooting, reloading Maps (although not sure if it is a true reload as it does not disappear after selecting uninstall but does ask to install) same issue. Search could not find similar problem.
This issue then causes any app that uses location like weather to give the data for somewhere else.
Seems like it should remember where it was or at least not go immediately some where else. Should it not locate by Wifi too? I'm wondering why it goes to this location too. Was this a returned unit?
Thanks
Anyone else having this happen? If I reboot, as soon as my phone comes up the GPS is going and continues to go for like 7-10 minutes before finally going away.
No clue what's causing it but it's rather annoying.
I would guess it is normal for Google and other services on your phone to collect data on your location for things like weather and traffic and stuff like that right after a boot but 7-10 minutes is a rather long time. Is the gps signal locked during that time or flashing like it is trying to obtain a signal?
If you run your task manager you should be able to see what apps are running and that may give an indication of which is trying to get your location for so long.
Update: Just started happening again and this time the phone wasn't rebooted. I'm almost convinced it's an app. And no it doesn't fully lock on, but it tries to the entire time. I'll play around with it some more, but I have a feeling it's one of the many apps I installed today.
It's Beautiful Widgets causing the problem. Also sometimes the time isn't updated properly. Not sure if BW is having an issue with this phone, or ICS, or maybe just MY specific configuration.
Any other good Clock/weather widgets out there?
Hi,
Whenever the "Use wireless networks" setting is on under "Location services", I get constant "nlpwakelocks" and battery drain.
However, I see that this was supposidely fixed by Google: http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/05/29/download-latest-google-play-store-4-1-10/ (my version is 4.3.11).
Does anyone else have this issue? I've only started looking into wakelocks and have had the phone 5 months and have never had better battery than with this option turned off. Yes the simple answer is "turn it off", but I find I can get location locks quicker with it on, and also my phone can locate me when indoors.
I use Google+ location services so I can locate trusted friends (and they can locate me), and previously Google Latitude, but surely they shouldn't be constantly requesting my location and Android should prevent this in someway?
Cheers.
I too suffered this issue (several times on different roms). Nlpwakelocks appeared in an insanely high abundance (several thousand wakelocks in a single day).
My first fix consisted of uninstalling all updates of google play, google services framework and google play services, clearing caches and deleting the data of the before mentioned in Appmanager, then do a reboot and re-install the updates again. Magically, the number of wakelocks dropped to a quite acceptable level. It still was the major cause of wakelocks, but it didn't drain the battery nearly as much as before. Since then, I had the "Use wireless networks" setting enabled without heavy battery drain. I could happily live with this result.
However, since I updated to 4.3 (CM 10.2), there's no longer a button to uninstall updates of those services in AppManager. Luckily though, clearing caches and data then reboot seems to suffice now.
The only caveeat seems to be google maps. Since the update, you need to be logged in to your google account to see your favorite places in google maps. Unfortunately, maps then begins to poll your location every few minutes, thus raising nlpwakelocks to an alarming level again.
Since I've not found a workaround for this yet, I always logout of google maps after use and login again when needed. Not very comfortable, but this way I'm still able to use Google Now while experiencing an acceptable battery life.
Hope this helps!
Here's the fix, if you're rooted: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/mod-nlpunbounce-reduce-nlp-wakelocks-t2853874
This is my wife's phone. L769, T-Mobile. Unrooted, totally stock and updated.
When she opens Google Maps it works okay. Then she tries to get directions with the GPS on, the phone resets. Every time.
What should be our course of action here?
This issue appears on other maps app?
Hello there,
for some months now I have an occasional problem with Google Maps. When I start the App, it won't find my location, even though permissions are set. Wiping the cache does not solve the problem. Restarting the phone helps for some days up to a week, but the problem keeps occuring.
Original stock ROM is running, everything is up to date.
Anyone else experiencing such a problem?
Is it possible it's tied to your location? Like spotty GPS reception in the area you keep your phone in when you open maps for the first time in a while? Will the restart fix it while you are in the same location where it didn't work before?
If it doesn't find your location, will placing it on a window ledge or somewhere else where the sky is unobstructed, result in a location fix?
No, it isn't. I usually get a GPS fix quickly even indoors. The last time the problem occurred, it was in the car. When the error shows up, I generally don't get a fix at all, no matter where I am and how long I've had Maps open. A reboot fixes the problem immediately and it then doesn't occur again for days.
I have had this since I got the pixel 6. Could never get gps to lock
Spoke to the Google support team, they said wait for the next update
Next update came and I still have major issues with gps
I would guess it's a hardware issue - submit a warranty claim
