kernel development help - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone. Firstly, thanks in advance for the help. I am pretty new to the android Development world.. I have a kdlinks a200 android media center box I have been playing with and I managed to get the source for the telechips tcc8930st board it uses. Problem is, kdlinks customized the kernel and such to utilize the built in lcd screen and who knows what else. I have dump of the Zimage from the kdlinks boot.img but I want to try and figure out what settings they used for the kernel. Is there a way to do this without the kdlinks source? Right now it's just trial and error. I compiled a whole new firmware for the box but I can only get it to load up to the boot image. Any suggestive links are appreciated as well as advice. I have done a lot of reading... but I don't mind doing more

Ask them for the kernel source. They are required by law to provide it.

The problem is they wont release it. they give lots of bull**** excuses and the mediator between us said he is going to ruin his relationship with them if he keeps pushing for it. I have the original source from the board manufacture (telechips)... i also pulled the proc/config.gz from the running machine.. then i tried matching up the settings through menuconfig and verifying by physically comparing the two .config files. i feel like there are files missing or something maybe.

Thanks for this post, I was considering the Kdlinks A200 for use with Kodi (XBMC) and maybe some light gaming but your post made it clear they are a shady company and not worth doing business with.
Can you recommend any alternatives which also run Android and have the ability to use a multi-terrabyte hard drive? Needs to be able to run Kodi (XBMC) too.
Thanks.

Smartphone ROM development

Hi guys, I'm new to this forums so I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this. But since I'm gonna be discussing about an android phone, I guess I'll put it here XD
Anyways, I have an Xperia Neo V and am upgrading my phone soon. I was wondering if anyone had any tutorials or links on how I can code and run custom operating systems on my phone. The thing is, I don't want it to be Android, I want to develop it from ground up, probably with assembly featuring. I've written a couple of tiny OSes on PCs with boot loaders and stuff using ASM but I don't know how to go about this with a smartphone as there are no resources on it.
Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge
Thanks

I am by no means an expert on this subject but first you would have to do is replace the bootloader on your phone with one that would allow you total control over the device which would mean porting something such as u-boot to your device. After that you would have following the porting procedure for whatever operating system you wanted to port.
Thanks for the reply I remember that on my tablet I had to place a uboot.bin file on the SD card before I could boot into CWM and some other stuff. Just wondering, rather than replacing the bootloader, would it be possible to run uboot from the SD card? Also, I was talking about writing an OS from scratch, not porting an existing one XD it's just for educational purposes, so I'd really like to try my hand at things like this
Thanks

These kinds of files are typically very specific to your tablet, and not just a general Android 4.3 kind of thing. Please let us know what kind of tablet and model # so we can attempt to help.

It is china N8000 A13
I didn't have any luck finding the original firmware for it. Doesn't mean it's not out there, just that there are so many different generic Allwinner tablets and other things called N8000, that it's like looking for a car in the parking lot and all you know about it is that it is red and has 4 doors. It's also important to know other info about the board to make sure the files you get will not affect stuff like the touchscreen and camera modules.
You're certain it has 4.3? I couldn't find any Allwinner a13 tablets that have 4.3 besides with custom roms like CM10.2...

Often times that will work if it has the same chip and resolution, but possible that other stuff might break. Unfortunately there usually isn't a way to tell unless someone specifically states they have had success with X firmware on Y tablet. You might find something here : http://tabletrom.blogspot.com/search/label/Allwinner

I need the files inside /system/bin but not all the system partition as the other parts are safe, I think these files are almost related to the type of the processor since it is just the executables of the OS such as the shell or other bins, so why are those files device dependent I can't get it

Different systems can have different executables. My system/bin surely looks different than yours. Plus you said you are missing /system/app folder files which are very often device specific for the more important ones like phone, messaging, etc.

My device is nuclear_ococci-eng 4.3 jdq39 and the model is N8000 can you just please guide me to find the best firmware anyway?
I think I might have found it: https://disk.yandex.com/public/?hash=56cK1fCrQx+iejYDh3JjzlMAT+gQ8+jcdqrpynbg3FQ=
They said it should be loaded with LiveSuite. Have no clue if it works, but found it on a Russian site where they really seemed to know about all these off brand things.

After trying to flash the image using livesuit it is failing
It says upgrade failed 0x163 with strange letters after it, now the device is completely dead, I don,t know if the battery can be charged when there is no firmware
Any suggestions please
Sorry man. Guess it isn't the right one. The thread described your tablet perfectly so not really sure what's up. Hopefully someone else can chime in.
Could be the wrong version of the program, or wrong rom.
Do you have any other firmware folders that are old? If so, you should delete.
Did you have any problems extracting it - any errors?
Did you have over 50% battery before starting?

Start of the original thread about random off brand Chinese tablets here:
http://ublaze.ru/forum/topic1232.html
Post with the beginning of the search for the firmware of a tablet that shares the same specs as yours here:
http://ublaze.ru/forum/topic1232-1180.html#wrapper
Mostly follow the interactions with Lirik after that and that's where I got the info from.
Maybe if you or someone you know speaks Russian, would probably make it a bit easier to understand. Google Translate has a tough time translating languages with different alphabets.

I have found another link so I downloaded the firmware and flashed it, the tablet is back to life but it is android 4.0.4 , anyway it is working well, the camera is working well, the touchscreen is reversed and shifted but I solved it by editing script.bin
Any way I have contacted the provider of the tablet and he promised to provide the original firmware, I am going to upload it as I get it so maybe someone else may need it
The last tip is never mess up with your device unless you have a nandroid backup

Hello,
Thank you very much for sharing the file. The links seem to be dead, as in they're no longer uploaded/accessible from the URL you have provided. Do you think you could share the file again? I apologise for any inconvenience.
Or could anyone share the stock ROM from the P791 tablet from ASDA?
Thank you and kind regards.

i havent got the file anymore - i originally got it from the settings in the tablet,
settings - about tablets - system updates
it just downloaded the file via browser to downloads folder as i recall, and you copy it out before it detects the update file is there.
it downloads from ftp://mypolaroidtablet.com but i cant access that from my laptop without a username and password
i dont recall it asking when accessing from the tablet, which i cant do as its been dropped a couple of times and now the screen is cracked and the wifi doesnt work
regards
k
http://southerntelecom.com/polaroidsupport/updates.html - some update files but doesnt seem to list this one, unless you find one that is compatible
http://southerntelecom.com/polaroidsupport/index.html - more files including factory resets but again this one not listed
Hey there, I just got one of these p791 Polaroid tablets for Christmas this year.
When I try to do the usual update method (Settings > About tablet > System update) it locks up and I have to force it to stop. So no auto-updates for me.
Currently stuck on KK 4.4.2
Is there anyone or anyway to get this ROM so I can manually install it, or anyone who's had this problem and fixed it so I can just update my tablet.

Hopefully you already got it sorted.. However, if not then you may want to know the tools usually used to fix this device are:
RKBatchTool,
AndroidTool,
Or PhoenixSuit (although I've not managed to get this one to work)
You can do a quick Google search on any of the tools mentioned above as well as find information on the installation process including the flashing of the P791 device.
I wasn't able to get mine turned on again but you may be able to. (Years ago I used these tools and got it working again, but can't seem to do it this time, maybe mines just had it. I think these are the only options for us though and I remember the annoying task of trying to figure it out as the specific device you're talking about, the one from Asda isn't hardly mentioned nor is it even supported by manufactures anymore so now I have an account on here I thought I'd just post this reply ?

**Update**
Since writing my reply to your OP I decided to give it another go and was successful.
I used AndroidTools to complete the process of flashing the stock update.img via the "Firmware" tab. If you need any help doing it feel free to reply to this post!

Oppo Rx17 Neo Development - A waste of time?

Hi, i'm the owner of an Oppo Rx17 neo, and the phone is really nice: Fingerprint sensor under screen, 128gb ROM, 4gb RAM... Overall a good phone, but the only problem is Color OS. I buyed this phone because i didn't knew about Color OS (My bad). Now i'm stuck with this phone for at least two or three years, there's no other choice but keep it. Knowing this, i want to develop a custom ROM for this phone, even if i have to learn from scratch, because i don't know anything about Android Development. I'm a web developer (PHP, JavaScript, a little bit of python and C#), but i don't know where to start this journey, because for what someone told me on a Telegram group, i need a custom recovery (Like TWRP i guess?), but i couldn't find anything about it on google (I searched for it on english, i don't know anything about russian or chinesse, i guess that could've help me a lot).
So, getting to the point: Could you help me to understand how to compile TWRP for my phone, or in first place, how to know if i can even unlock the bootloader. I have installed custom ROMS before, on an Galaxy S5 and a nexus 5x, but nothing further.
Can i have some help?

Older Official ROM unpacking, editing and then packing with latest Android

Hello experts,
I own an android phone (three years old Umidigi C Note 2) running Android 7. I also have working system.img (Android 7) file for this phone too. Is it possible to unpack this system.img, take necessary components (drivers etc.) and then repack under Android 10? Is this project worth spending time on?
Cheers
Not sure if I created this question in the right category. Any guidance will be appreciated!

It's probably just the fact that it is so blatantly obvious that you absolutely have no idea how this works that no one even bothered to reply
