General problems with CM11 - Xperia Tablet Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've just moved to CM11 (offical ver) from stock 4.4.4 on my Z Ultra. My company requires encryption to use their email so my /data is encrypted. There are a few issues I'm having that I think should be relatively easy to fix.
1. Once I encrypted I'm stuck in the stock Clockworkmod recovery although I'd really prefer to use TWRP. Before encrypting I was able to get to TWRP. I've looked in the /ext_card/XZDualRecovery/XZDR.prop and it's set to philz and NDR Utils shows TWRP. When I boot to Recovery though I get the base Clockworkmod.
2. When trying to do CM updates using the About menu it properly downloads but since the internal SD is encrypted when I try to do the update it fails because it cannot read the file. I don't really care which recovery I use and I understand I'll need to enter a decryption password but it'd sure be nice if this worked properly. One thought I had was to remove the cmupdater directory and point it to /ext_card/cmupdater via a symlink, that way at least it will download to a directory I can do the update manually from. Currently I have to copy it there manually. Not sure this would work, that it would properly follow a symlink pointing to SD.
Thanks for any help. These are pretty much the only issues I have with CM and they are more annoyances than anything.

You're in a wrong forum. It's better to ask im CM thread here.

Thanks, but this is mostly a recovery issue, if recovery did encryption then it would all fall together.
I have reposted to the XZDR Dual Recovery thread, we'll see if I get an answer there.

[Q] First time installing custom ROM on S4 - Thoughts & Questions

Hi all,
This is the first time I've tried installing a custom ROM on my VZW S4 (i545) (MDK firmware. Yes, I held out on the OTA since May). I've got a few thoughts and a couple of questions I was hoping could be addressed. I consider myself familiar with flashing ROM's and whatnot, so I won't need hand-holding steps in answer to my questions.
Some info:
VZW S4
MDK Firmware
Recovery: OUDhs CWM Touch Req0very v1.0.3.5
I haven't taken any OTA since I got the phone back in May. This leads me to believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that I'm on Android 4.2.2?
Current ROM: AOKP Nightly Build for 10/31/2013 (MR2)
Thoughts: Holy hell, this ROM is BLAZING fast. I am missing a few features, but none I use regularly (I don't use any of the TouchWiz "smart" features. Damn battery hogs). I was able to flash this over and install GAPPS without any problems. Loading time is incredible, and I love how clean the interface is.
Questions:
Can anyone help me figure out why I cannot install CM10.2? Not sure if that's because I downloaded the wrong version or something, but after flashing it, the screen stays stuck at the Galaxy S4 logo and doesn't move. Maybe I didn't wait long enough, but it surely didn't move in any reasonably expected time (AOKP, by comparison, loaded probably <1 minute). Any thoughts on why this might be? I really want to try CM10.2, so perhaps I should try a different build?
Another question/concern: I downloaded a few different ROMs last night -- CM10.2, AOKP and st0ckdr0id. AOKP installed fine, CM10.2 froze up, but when I installed st0ckdr0id (after wiping out, of course), I got what I think is referred to as a kernel panic. The message was similar to "This phone has software installed on it that Verizon Wireless has determined to be unsafe. Please power off the phone and take to the nearest Verizon Wireless store for help". In the top-left corner, it had in bold RED letters "Kernel secure: FAIL" (or similar wording). I fixed this by booting back into recovery, wiping out, and then installing AOKP again. Can anyone help me understand why this happened?
Why is only ~10GB of space still available when I -thought- I wiped out everything?
What I'm really searching for is an AOSP ROM that is very clean and light, but has SOME of the TouchWiz features. Any recommendations?
My phone only shows me as having a 3G connection, where normally I have 4G LTE. Anything I can do to fix this? Is this an issue with the ROM not detecting the right kind of radio? Bug report, perhaps?
I can't mount my external_sd in my CWM anymore. Yes, I used to be able to do it at one point, because I've done an external nandroid backup to it from within CWM in the past (as of October 29th, if the date on the backups is correct). I've read in other Google searches that it has something to do with the formatting of the SD card, but I haven't removed that SD card from my phone in a few months to have adjusted anything to do with formatting. I plugged the memory card into my Linux laptop this morning while diagnosing this and got an error about an unknown exfat partition. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Stupid question: Is there a way to -completely- wipe my internal SD card clean of all my current files? I know when I "wipe" /data I can still see all of my files from the previous installation, and I'm not ballsy enough to wipe /sdcard. I guess the question that then coincides with this is if I were able to completely wipe the phone, I assume that would wipe the recovery as well?
Sorry for some of the novice questions -- I have no problem messing with my old TF300T tablet (because NVFlash will save the day), but this is my only phone, only line of communication and SOLE way for me to answer calls for work (24/7 rotating on-call), so it is VERY important to me to ask questions and not go down for more than 1 hour.
Thanks for all help guys, its much appreciated. I hope to be able to test ROMs regularly and maybe start posting video reviews or something, who knows?
Thanks,

Wow that's a lot. Let's see if we can get you answers.
1. Switch recoveries to twrp 2.5.0.2. I can't stress the importance of the particular version enough. There are others. This is absolutely the most stable. It's what the devs use. I think then your cm issue will be resolved.
Correct way to wipe with twrp.
1.wipe - >factory reset.
2. Advanced wipe - >check system, data, davlik, cache then wipe.
3. The go back to main screen and install rom.
2. Answered by answer one. Lots of people have lots of opinions about the various recoveries. All I can tell you is this is what all the devs use for their recovery. Can't argue with that.
3. Reserved space. It might say you have 16 gigs but a good size chunk is taking merely by formatting. Then the ROM and programs you have installed of course.
4. Honestly they are all freaking great. The aosp roms. You do the answer to number one and you can find out. DU is my fav @ this moment. Followed by beanstalk.
5. Go to mobile networks make sure your network mode is set to cdma +lte/evdo.
6. Answer 1.
7. You don't really want to wipe the entire internal SD card. Sounds good when you think it might screw you if you did it.

Thanks for your response Mightycaptain! I used CWM as my first ever recovery and am kinda pressed on it, which is why I use it, but I have no issues going to TWRP if that means fixing my issues. Can you elaborate on how to install TWRP in place of my current CWM? I'll do some Googling in the meantime to try to find the answer myself. (I haven't done any flashing or rooting stuff since I got the phone in May!!)
Thanks for your answer in #5. Fixed the issue I was having.
My reason for wanting to wipe the entire internal SD card is there are still files, folders, logs and backups from when I had my previous ROM. I'm having issues restoring my nandroid backup from the night of the 7th so is it at all possible for me to salvage some of my settings, apps and file backups from those existing files? Once I fix my nandroid, I'm going to keep the nandroid backup in a safe place and I ideally want to have a completely clean phone to start from: That means getting rid of all those old files and other nonsense from before. Is this a possibility?
I'm going to spend my time today trying to extract data from my nandroid backups using ROM Toolbox Pro. If that doesn't work, I have a nandroid backup from the 31st that has 99% of the stuff I need so I'll try to restore that. If THAT doesn't work, then I'm going to cry myself to sleep while trying to remember all of my contacts
Wish me luck, and hopefully I can get some answers to my last few questions!
Thanks,

Check my post here for twrp 2.5.0.2.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47275165
You can flash it in your current recovery. It overwrites CWM. I would make sure you have a flashable for CWM just in case you need to go back for some reason. Also the backups between those 2 recoveries are not compatible. But I would nandroid with CWM before flashing twrp. I would also change were you recovery is pointing to for storage to the external SD if you haven't already. After you have cut your current backup and past it there. You can use rom toolbox pro to back up your contacts and restore it once you flash a new ROM.
Now as good advice going forward I would add your contacts to your Google account. That way when you flash new stuff or drop your phone in the toilet as soon as you add your Google account to the phone all those contacts will automatically download. But it is always a good idea to use tibu or rom toolbox pro to back up all your apps and seeing and use that after flashing roms to restore apps and settings.
But honestly I'd nandroid, move my contacts to Google, make app backups. Flash twrp. Then start flashing roms. You could be doing it in an hour. After you flash twrp make another nandroid so you have a twrp compatible backup. Then in a day or so of you are happy with everything delete the CWM backups for space.
Edit: as to extracting things from your current nandroid. Not sure if that is possible for one thing it is compressed not sure how that would work unless you are doing a full restore.
Also for future reference with TWRP. When restoring nandroid wipe like your flashing a new rom before restoring.

Hey thanks again for your quick response!! I'm glad I checked this first, because I'm in my ROM Toolbox app atm and it has an option to let me install TWRP 2.5.0.2 from within the app itself. Should I do it this way?
I will be adding all contacts to Google from now on. Unfortunately I saved all my stuff to my Verizon backup assistant so I just need one last shot at my phone to save all those contacts (manually, if I must) and be able to enter them onto the new ROM.
By "flash it in your current recovery" I assume you mean download the .zip, place it on my internal /sdcard, and then "flash" it just like I would flash a ROM, right?
I'm sure I have a "flashable" for CWM somewhere but like I said, I haven't done any of this stuff on this phone since I first bought it, and things have changed so much with everyone having OTA's and being locked out that I'm not sure what process is the same or what has changed. I can't afford to lose this phone so I'm hesitant to go balls to the wall to try things.
I will try the things you've listed here. Seems like a nandroid + TiBu + Google Contacts is my best bet to get up and running each time I decide to try a new ROM.
Thanks again!

Understand the hesitancy completely. But with nodding comes risk. It is always about whether you can accept the worst possible outcome.
Rom toolbox pro flashing recovery? I don't know never tried it.
Yes I would download the recovery. Leave it on SD card reboot to recovery and flash like a rom.
Yes nandroid tibu and saving your contacts to Google is the quickest way to get up and running again.

Mighty, just wanted to report that flashing TWRP 2.5.0.2 from within ROM Toolbox Pro worked like a charm. I'm on TWRP as we speak.
Thank you so much for your responses. If anyone else has anything to add, or a different response to my questions, please do so! In the meantime, I'm going to try to figure out how to get my nandroid backup working...
Cheers!
*EDIT* Made a backup with TWRP (whose interface is bloody phenomenal, btw), flashed CWM and its working like a charm!! Going to try the st0ckdr0id one as well. Still working on getting that nandroid working so I can recover my stuff and get to customizing!

[TWRP_Recovery_2.8.7.0][Unofficial][quincyatt]

I wanted to post this here since I've been busting my tail on an update for a week now. This WILL flash, Backup & Restore android 4.4 roms! USB mounting, internal & external sdcard mounts as well. There are still a few bugs to work out but give it a go & some feedback. It's still a WIP but plenty stable to use daily for now.
Also anyone interested in flashing the CandyKat sweetener packs, you may now do so with this recovery!!
TWRP 2.8.7.0
I am not responsible for misuse, bricks, or exploding devices! Flash at your own risk! You can download the zip file & flash it from within your existing recovery & reboot to recovery.
CREDITS: Javelinanddart for fixing mounts, f2fs, & for fixing vibration for 5.0 & up Disconnecktie && Santod040 I have bugged these guys to death to get this working so Please stop in & thank these guys as well. They are a huge part of the success of this! Obviously this couldn't happen without Omniroms Source! And a huge thanks for
Dees_Troy for his guide to compiling twrp recovery!!
TWRP Themes have changed a bit & if you use a them then you'll want to checkout this link.
THEMING TWRP THE NEW WAY!
What's new in 2.8.7.0
- Initial ground work for software drawn keyboard (_that)
- Fix handling of wiping internal storage on datamedia devices (xuefer)
- Allow DataManager to set and read values from the system properties (xuefer)
- Fix crash when taking screenshots on arm64 devices (xuefer)
- Fix error message after an ORS script completes (Dees_Troy)
- Fix crashes / error when creating encrypted backups (_that, Dees_Troy)
- Add system read only option - more details below (Dees_Troy)
- Add resize2fs and GUI option to run resize2fs (Dees_Troy)
- Fix crash loop caused by empty lines in AOSP recovery command file (_that)
- Prevent duplicate page overlays such as multiple lock screens (mdmower)
System read only option: Devices that ship with 5.0 and higher as their initial OS are using block level OTA updates. With this style of OTA update, the update script checks to see if the system partition has ever been mounted read/write. Further, the script also usually runs an SHA sum of the entire system partition to detect if any changes have been made. If any changes have been made, the OTA update will refuse to install. Since not all OEMs and devices have factory images available, we have created a new feature in TWRP that detects if the system partition has ever been mounted read/write. If not, you will be prompted asking if you want TWRP to mount system as read/write. If you choose not to allow TWRP to mount as read/write, TWRP won't prompt to install SuperSU and TWRP won't try to patch the stock ROM to prevent TWRP from being replaced by stock recovery. The goal of this option is to hopefully allow the user to make a raw system image backup that they can use to get back to a state where they can take OTA updates again.
resize2fs feature: On some devices like the Nexus 6, the factory images include a userdata image that is the proper size only for the 32GB units. If you flash the factory image to a 64GB Nexus 6, the data partition will appear as if it only has the free space of a 32GB device. Using the resize2fs option, TWRP can resize your data partition to take up the full space available. The resize2fs may also be useful to resize system partitions on devices where custom ROM system images don't take up the full partition space. Lastly, resize2fs may be useful in some cases to reserve the proper space at the end of a data partition for a full disk encryption key, should your partition be formatted incorrectly for some reason.
This new version also marks our first set of full builds using our new jenkins build server. You can track the progress of builds at https://jenkins.twrp.me and we have taken additional steps to make it easier for device maintainers to step up and submit patches to our gerrit server at https://gerrit.twrp.me to help us keep devices up to date and working.

Mounting which partition? Anyone that finds an error or a bug should try posting the recovery log after said error. Don't post the entire log in a post but put it on pastebin or something similar. Having the logs greatly increases the likely hood the issue will be fixed. Thanks.

What do you mean by mount memory? Where you add something from the pc to the sd card & it shows up on the internal when in twrp? The internal sd card mounts when connected to the pc, not the external sd. I don't know if that's how it's suppose to work or not. This is my first twrp attempt and I had to build it from scratch basically. Like Disconnecktie stated, a log may be helpful.
Great work. Missed TWRP. Just had to tick off my internal sd. Panicked when my partition wasn't visible with my ROMs to flash. LOL.

Updated OP with better mount paths & usb mounting working better. Guys if you all test this latest and give feedback, I'm working on getting this to the official site and in Bigbiff's thread. I appreciate your input. I have worked tirelessly to make this work but I may be missing something. Let me know what you find, working or not. I know the vibrate isn't currently working in recovery but I am looking into that.

For some reason (most likely that I'm a dummy, or missed reading somewhere)
Recently my SD card took a poo, so I've been saving to internal memory.
I flashed TWRP. When I look in sdcard I have no files visible. When I am booted into CandyKat I can see my files with my file explorer. Am I missing a valid mount somewhere? When I go to / I don't see a folder called storage, and in my /sdcard all I see is a folder called TWRP which is empty.
THanks!

Haven't tried your update yet but on the last build in order to use themes I had to load them into /data/media/0/TWRP/theme/ which I believe will be overwritten as soon as I flash another ROM. Is this one of your corrected paths?

No it was not. I've been waiting on more feedback from the update or any of my twrp builds. Now that I'm aware of it, I'll look into that so we can get it official in Bigbiffs twrp thread. I think it's close enough for him to release it as an official but this is my personal feelings. It'll be a couple days maybe before I get back to it since I've spent the last week concentrating on this, it's time for me to move on to other things for a moment.

We can probably keep this here until the bugs are worked out. Have you tried the latest here yet? I don't theme my recovery but I'm willing to so I can get it correct.
Also that may be something you can set in twrp, set a different default path for themes but I'm not 100% sure.

Default path in latest is correct now. Themes work from the correct directory now (/sdcard/TWRP/theme/ui.zip ) so they won't get deleted. Love button vibration as well! Excellent work.

I tried to install the full aroma rom patch by pollution and it seemed to work but gave com.android.phone error on boot. So I thought easy fix, I'll restore the backup I made with TWRP yesterday and got even more errors. Yes, I factory reset before restoring. It seems that this TWRP is not doing everything like it used to under the 4.2's. I'm going to go back to CWM and restore a CWM backup, regroup, recharge.......and try again from scratch to test this thing out again. Wish me luck.

Best of luck to ya! I have restored my nandroid with twrp but not in my latest version. I'll give it a try this evening and see what happens on my end. I have not used the aroma installer because I personally would rather not use it. I just use the camera fix from Pollution since I don't have the screen flicker or any other issues with my phone.

Grab the img for your device flash with flashify or tool of your choice.
**Temporarily removed the aromafm, graphics issues at this time.**
The aromafm.zip is for aroma file manager. Place zip in /data/media/0/clockworkmod/aromafm/. They zip file will be in the folder with your variant recovery.img

No it does not.
<•invisiblek> would need f2fs-support in the boot.img's fstab
<•invisiblek> and if recovery thought it'd be a good idea to re-write that, you're going to end up with an un-bumped boot.img
its in his long term plan but its not there right now.
Woow...Thanks to the good work for d855 [emoji6]

on another note, as stated, aromafm is derped pretty hard on our device, i'm planning to look into fixing it up at some point, but it might be a bit
also i'm in the process of building/uploading a new version (6.58.9.1) which supports the cm updater, expect those to start rolling in shortly
for those interested in the fix: https://github.com/invisiblek/philz_touch_cwm6/commit/bef5775f20854a45ccfd96b1b04bf5ee28fe3af4
Does it support nandroid backup for modem?
@invisiblek
Great news. You are the real hero behind the scenes. Your work for our device is much appreciated mate thank you. We wouldn't have all those unofficial roms to play with until you make something official for us. it is very close I believe.

Well, tried on my D850 and installed and ran fine, but 2 issues:
1. Can't mount external SD (SanDisk 64Gb in FAT32 but soon going back to ExFat), the path for it is incorrect and no option to change it
2. Installed a Zip file that replaced the kernel and even though it said all went ok it was never installed
Had to flash back the TWRP recovery (even though that one can't read my external_SD either no matter the format) so I can flash the new kernel properly.
Waiting for your next release to test it out.

Thats odd, I flash kernels just fine and can flash from my sd card. Could you have gotten a bad download possibly.
can't get philz to make back-up
downloaded the latest version, flashed with flashify, rebooted, and when i try to make a back-up of my current rom, all it does is sit at the "checking" when trying to back up to sdcard1
not sure what i did wrong, but isn't working for me

Is there a version of philz recovery that will work on lg g3 as990? Can one be created?

[MOD][GUIDE] Unencrypt/Flashable - Disable Force Encryption - Any Rom/Kernel

Depreciated!! See this thread for the new recommended package. All of my instruction below is still valid, just use the new package from thread linked here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3234422
~~DISCLAIMER~~Flashing roms, kernels, and mods come with NO guarantee, NONE, ZILCH, NADA . . Do NOT use this package if you do not grasp and understand this concept. You have been warned.
This is a recovery flashable that will extract your boot.img, unpack all pieces, modify fstab.shamu to disable forced encryption, repackage, and flash boot.img back to system. It does NOT actually unencrypt your device. More on that later.
It will work on ANY kernel for this device, regardless of whether it is the stock kernel, or a custom ROM kernel. Also to date, it has shown to work on any version of android . . it is essentially future proof (unless google throws us a major curve ball in the future and radically alters how encryption is triggered at first boot).
Why use this? Who is this package for?
-If you are running 100% Stock Rom, but have a recovery installed and wish to unencrypt your storage. No root needed.
-Running a custom kernel you like, but it forces encryption and you want to change that.
-Currently unencrypted but want to flash a rom that uses FORCEENCRYPTION by default (cyanogenmod12).
-Just bored and want to toss the dice and see what happens.
That is pretty sweet right? Now you can flash anything and as long as you flash this afterwords, you wont have to worry about booting a rom and seeing that dreaded "Encrypting" screen anymore.
What doesn't this do?
-Well, to be blunt . . it does NOT actually UNENCRYPT your device. You will have to bite that bullet on your own, but I will offer some advice on that front later.
Changelog:
03/30/2015
Remove my ill advised attempt to auto patch nightlies, not possible
01/12/2015
Initial Build/Release
Includes fully working patch to initrd, specifically fstab.shamu to revert FORCEENCRYPTION by default.
Buglist:
Auto patch support removed, would never work anywayaddon.d support not currently working - fix is to flash this package with every nightly to preserve unencryption
How to download and install?
Download - NO_FORCE_ENCRYPT_shamu_v1.0-signed.zip
Reboot Recovery - TWRP only has been tested as working
Select "Install" and navigate to where ever you stored that file . . likely /sdcard/downloads/
Take a deep breath and wait for it to finish.
TADA . . done. Reboot and Profit!!
NOTE: You can feel free to flash this as part of a line of other packages.
Example: You are already unencrypted and want to flash Cyanogenmod 12 (assumes you have all packages downloaded already)
-TWRP factory reset (optional but recommended when coming from another rom)
--TWRP's built in factory reset function does quite well, but if you are like me and want a clean slate . .
---TWRP>Wipe>ADVANCED WIPE> and check System, Data, Cache (will leave internal storage intact). This is recommened specifically in conjunction with switching GApps.
-Install> and select all packages at once. I recommend the following order . . Rom, then my Kernel Patcher, then SuperSU (optional), then GApps last.
That was certainly easy right? Well the truth is, unless you are already unencrypted . . nothing will be different. You will still be encrypted. Bummer right? But that is where these next steps come in. They will give you the options available to reach the fabled unencrypted status!!
Below are the only three options I know of unencrypt once you are running a patched kernel. Select one below that works for you.
~~WARNING~~
The below methods WILL erase EVERYTHING from data, including your INTERNAL STORAGE. Backup all important files, pictures, etc before proceeding. You have been told!!
-Go to Android>Settings>Backup & restore>Factory data reset (may not work properly with a custom recovery installed)
-Reboot to recovery and go to TWRP>Wipe>FORMAT DATA . . type "yes" to confirm
-Reboot to bootloader and type . .
Code:
fastboot format userdata
[note - I originally said to use the fastboot erase userdata function. This caused a recovery bootloop. Switching to "format" instead solved this issue. Thanks @aussie1234 for pointing this issue out to me]
Edit: make sure you boot android first after unencrypting before going into recovery. This will allow the proper creation of multiuser partitions, otherwise, twrp will not use the proper /data/media/0/ as root of storage.
Some may notice there is an experimental addon.d included. This NOT WORKING YET. DO NOT TRY AND USE IT. Not quite sure yet where in the chain it is broken, but that will be a problem for another day. In theory it should, but . . read the "disclaimer" at the top of this post. The idea here is to be able to flash nightlies as they roll out without having to re-apply this patch manually every time. This function is NOT supported on Stock Roms. If you try it and it works, let me know. Do NOT come yelling to me that it did not work and crying that you are now encrypted again. No whiner babies allowed.[REMOVED: didn't work and caused conflicts with some packages]
At the core of this tool is a script build by @dk_zero-cool which can be found . . [DEV][INITRD][2013-10-25] Injector - An Android Ramdisk Injection Tool
Ultimately, this package is as much his as it is mine. It is his magic script that did the hard part, I just put it to work in a new way.
Please don't share this package directly, link them back here if needed. That way, they can get proper support and instruction for its use.
Also thanks to @rascarlo . . his github made it easy to find what needed modded.
Nice! Now just to double check, im unencrypted so if i flash cm12 and this cm12 wont encrypt my phone while still using cm's kernel?
That is correct. In my tests it has worked just fine that way.
Edit: In fact, I just tested this exactly and works as expected.
On a side note, I can confirm that addon.d support does NOT work - do not attempt it. I updated the OP to reflect this and add a stronger warning. Right now you MUST flash this everytime you flash a rom that forces encryption.
Just what the doctor recommended for a flash-addict like my self....
Thanx :silly:

I'm not sure anymore. Will look. I tend to break things when flashing because I don't read closely. On my vzw note 3, I was well known to break everything. Kinda scary now that I have a nexus lol

It really is that simple isn't it? Glad it was of help!!
Mine is encrypted n6 running cm12 nightly .
So flashing this will format my storage or just data partition ?
I dont wanna loose my personal data's :/
This will not wipe anything. The package only turns an encryption forced kernel into a no force encryption kernel. It is then up to you to follow one of the three options from my OP to reach actual unencryption status.
But you can relatively easily do it, though it will take a little time. Boot to recovery, flash my package, and then create a nandroid backup. Then backup the entirety of your internal storage to your PC or OTG storage device. Once that is done, do one of the 3 methods to unencrypt. Once you do that, boot android (this step is important as it builds proper multiuser partitions) then restore data to your internal storage. Then boot back to recovery and restore your nandroid backup. That will take you back to the exact point you were before but now unencrypted.
I did all steps, but it still shows me that I'm encrypted. What am I doing wrong?

I flash package and made nandroid backup in recovery. Then made factory reset and boot Android till welcome select language. Then switched off into recovery and restored backup....
And when you say you did a factory reset, how did you do that? A twrp factory reset will not work as it leaves the internal storage in tact. I am very explicit on the 3 ways to do this part (at least I thought I was).

Might be worth trying the other two methods as well. TWRP's format data method and the fastboot userdata method are pretty thorough. Should get you up and running

Care to help me make TWRP backup/recovery work?

As you know TWRP on our phones allows us to instantly switch between ROMs, backup, etc. instantly. It's like an image based backup for our android devices. And exceptionally handy when wanting to try out different ROMS (Firmware here I guess). I have TWRP recovery installed and I was able to get it to see my nandroid online TWRP backup. I had to run a backup in twrp to see the directory it wanted as It would not let me specify the directory. Turns out it is /mnt/external_sd/TWRP/BACKUPS/n70 for my device when choosing the external option. So I went ahead and confirmed the format of that backup is the same as the online nandroid TWRP backup and it is (mtd.win, ext4.win) so I went ahead and moved boot, cache, data, kernel, and system to that n70 directory. Beautiful TWRP recovery sees them! Making progress, I think. (See pic)
Then I go to restore this and I am met with "Unable to wipe data using function call". FAIL! Anyone have any idea what I may be able to do to make this work? I did check permissions of the TWRP backup directory to ensure all was well and it was. Perhaps TWRP doesn't have access to write to /data? I doubt that, perhaps this is an easy fix and TWRP can actually work well on these devices?
NOTE, you cannot backup from TWRP recovery as it shows /data as 0MB. Which may be part of the reason I get an error during TWRP restores?
Dave
Lets hope one of the dev's pick this up as this would be a great addition to help make life easier!
I agree. I couldn't even decompile the recovery. I fail!!
Dave
so nobody has any desire for this to work?
I pushed for having a working TWRP when these units first came out. The issue is none of the ROM makers have had the desire to move to this type of system for releasing ROMs, so all updates to the ROM force you to flash back the factory recovery to update you ROM, which makes it a PIA anytime you want to update.
fortunately the flash back to stock recovery is easy but twrp is so nice im surprised they aren't wanting to move to it. The backup/restore functionality is amazing as well.
Dave
I would love for them to goto this style of updating as it would make upgrades so much easier as well as could use things like Aroma Installer to keep me from having to nuke half the apps I do not use with Titanium Backup. For example the only stock apps I use are Bluetooth and Radio. And most of the other crap found in the latest roms, I kill as well as I do not use them.
I am so down for this! Would definitely donate to make it happen. Promise. Ask @Malaysk
as would I.
I also like to pay with PayPal ready

AFAIK its already been done, a year or 2 ago.
If I remember correctly it was working but it wasnt compatible with the way the MTCB updates work or something, did you search the original thread ?
Whilst I use TWRP on my phone I never tried it on my head unit or saw the need for it personally.
@Dees_Troy or @Captain_Throwback are the only guys I know capable of doing it. Maybe if they could give a hand. I have attached the 800x480 5.1 recovery if they would be so kind.
The wiki says its "now working perfectly" and gives a link to TWRP for Rockchip devices in a Freaktab post from 2014.
As I said earlier I m sure there was some reason why not many people use it, possibly to do with not being able to flash the MCU in TWRP or something.
Has anyone actually searched the original thread yet ? (theres only 11 pages to read through if you search "TWRP").

When I use it it backs up a 0MB apps daa folder each time. You could always very quickly swap back to stock recovery for flashing of ROM'/MCU. It never worked for me properly and I don't see any indication anyone actually backed up and restored w/ TWRP. I provided the screen shots of what error was generating while backing up somewhere. It certainly does not restore an online nandroid TWRP backup either.r.
