My first Samsung phone... root? - Samsung Galaxy Alpha

Even though i have had at least 20 android phones before, this is the first Samsung phone that cought my attention and got it from the store today :good:
So, how do i go about rooting it? Might the procedure be similar to other galaxy phones?
Any input would be most welcome.
Cheers!

...dude, the phone just came out and some dev has to get it's firmware or even better, the phone itself, in order for him to achieve root.
Enter Download mode, turn off the phone, then start it up again by holding VolDown + Home + Power buttons, and as soon as you see a big f**king yellow triangle, release them and press Vol Up and tell us in the upper left corner what is written. Somewhere along those lines should be a 'KNOX WARRANTY VOID 0X0.
Then reboot the phone. Pressing and holding Power or pulling out the battery, doesn't matter.
Download mode is what's gonna save your a** if your phone bricks in the future, but for now, there's nothing you can flash with it. Though on other Samsung phones Chainfire's root methods always use this Download mode.
When facing a brick, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54842274&postcount=2 - while this is the procedure for the Note 3, I'm pretty sure the Alpha's is the same (only you use it's own firmware file instead of the Note's ).
But for now - patience. It's a brand new phone, ffs.

The firmware is live on sammobile.com (remember this site, it has saved everybody's collective Samsung a** multiple times), but like I said, a dev must get interested in the device.
Also, I seem to forget sometimes, just a few tips and rules for around XDA:
1. That site began as a platform for devs to share their work with other devs, it just grew enough so power users could join and enjoy their work.
2. Development for this device WILL begin, when it does, read the threads carefully, and when you think you're ready for action, read it AGAIN.
For the time being, I suggest you test it - battery life (a BIG topic for all of us here), speed, does it heat, any problems you encounter.
Your device contains, if I am not mistaken, the first mobile processor using 20nm technology (unlike the 28nm used so far), and it's bound to increase both performance AND battery life. The battery is not big at all at 1860 mAh, and we all will be curious how effective this new processor is, you'll get a lot of questions about it being one of the first XDA members that are in possession of the device.

They were a tad quiet about that. So much for a press release or anything.
I feel sodomized now...
This is a load of legal BS, which is only to benefit one party (ASUS). I wonder if such one-sided contracts will even stand up in court...
Great news !!!!
This future certainly looks bright !!
Bring on the Roms etc.
unlocking success XD now booting up it only takes a few seconds...
Finally! I really hope this will kickstart development.
strange recovery... only had a look for a few seconds as there is a timecounter in the background, but there is an option to install linux , mnt usb? maybe with FS? and to wipe (I don't want to press the button). I think it checked up the internal storage for some special files, like bootloader in htc for the pd**.img
Basically this unlocker grabs the serial of the CPU, tells the Asus server... Gets back the necessary info to unlock, unlocks the device and leave a marker for warranty thrashing (It mentions some sort of flag), then reboots.
Edit:If anyone was wondering, the serial of the cpu would be independent of the device serial (In format 0245xxxxxxxxxxxx) is acquired from /proc/cpuinfo
Edit2:I believe the unlock server is mdm.asus.com via HTTPS, also I believe it uses the Android device ID as well.
More Info!!! Thanks
couldn't someone just make a app, that does all this, except tell the asus sever our cpu number?
that way they would still think we havent unlocked it?
this is great news, the only problem i see is not being able to recieve OTA anymore. i am sure a dev will figure out a way to get us unlocked primes a way to install/flash them.
This is good to know and I will be keeping an eye out for any results that the community has using it. However, I won't be downloading/installing the tool because my Prime has not been rooted or gone backwards with ICS versions. I want to go the official update route for awhile yet. This is just a personal preference. I have too much money tied up in this unit to void the warranty.

It's a challenge-response thing with the challenge built from the cpu serial and device id (or one of those, or more... Didn't take a close look). Only Asus and the person in possession of the device would know these.
Also they're not stupid enough to just let you throw unlock requests at them without recording them. (After all they do have to look up the keys to unlock the bootloader)
Also they're probably wiping the DRM keys on the device as well, so devs don't go extracting them after they've unlocked their bootloaders.

DD'ing blobs *should* work still, although YMMV.
nice! now let's hope for a good recovery and custom roms!
As much as I want to use this I'm not going too. Don't want to lose my warranty as I dont trust this device with the amount of problems that surround it so far. Also wont get OTA updates. Asus know how to screw over there buyers, should of been unlocked before release.
Hm, did anyone get fastboot to work? For me it stays for ever at the line "Starting Fastboot USB download protocol"

There is not really a usable recovery. Only the OTA one which just shows you an error once you start it. (Because there is no OTA file to apply)
Once booting with VOL_DOWN you can choose between a cold boot, wiping data or entering fastboot mode (which does not really seem to work for me)

wasnt really even a work around just a leaked bootloader and 0 bootloader protection. surprized the crap out of me that there was no bootloader protection so it could just be dd'd over the top of the exisiting one

This rom has multiwindow.jar and multiwindow.odex files inside /system/framework. If I'm not wrong those files were not present on XXALIE roms, so it could have multiwindow working...
Anyone want to try it and make a port for the SGS3? xD
Anyone with dev chops getting a vzw version and want to take a look into this dump that was graciously provided?!? Don't know if it's useful in its current form but at least it will provide somewhat of a head start. :fingers-crossed:

Considering the fact that the bootloader on the Galaxy S III was cracked and unlocked I'm pretty sure if Verizon forces Samsung to lock the bootloader that the same method can happen and get the bootloader unlocked. Sure it probably took a month or so but the bootloader was still cracked.
Coming from a Rezound which you use a paperclip to short the board to achieve s-off, anything is possible. I am optimistic about the bootloader, and for some reason we don't get it, I will be mystified, and heartbroken. Have faith in XDA. Sorry for posting in the dev section with nothing important, thanks....

Usually I care a great deal about this stuff, but in reality, beyond rooting to remove junk, using any other AOSP rom rather defeats the purpose of all the features that are included, and ONLY included with the TW rom. Split window and the like are all TW only, which means I LOVE paranoid rom, but it is highly unlikely that could be simply ported over with an app.
Other than root to remove bloat, I'm freakin STOKED to be jumping to this phone over my GS3. Booya, can't wait!

I second the Booya!
After bloatware, the sprint versions seem to have around of 9gb ram left (give or take) which is enough for me. VZ may be more or less but if they have full multi-tasking features (which seems to look good) I'll be happy as a clam.

The bootloader wasn't cracked, an unlocked version was leaked. Big difference.
Since this is sporting JB, it should at least have the disable function for the bloatware apps. Out of sight, out of mind

Samsung Galaxy s3 NOT ROOTED stuck at Logo Screen

I know this has been asked dozens if not hundreds of times, but it seems everyone has bricked their phone by rooting.
My phone has never been rooted, and I have had it working fine for at least 9 months now.
It was working all day and when I got home from school I plugged it into the charger the same as every night and when I woke up it was stuck on the "Samsung Galaxy III" screen.
I have no idea how to fix this please help, I cannot get into recovery mode it just says "recovery 'something'" and disappears quickly then shows the Logo Screen again before shutting off.
I can get into download mode and I guess I have to start from there.
I don't want to do a wipe without at least getting into it in safe mode somehow and backing up some things, please help.
Oh and if it helps no new software was added since the last reboot, the only thing I could think of that changed from it working fine to this morning was my alarm? It was supposed to go off sometime in the morning maybe that froze it up? Other than that I have no idea why it would brick all of a sudden

The i9300 has a bug that wipes out the internal memory and causes symproms like yours, however I think only the i9300 has this bug.

[Q] I beseech thee, help me diagnose my YP-G70!

I've been searching XDA and Google for months now and I haven't found anyone else with this precise issue. I'm very tech savvy, but this is just beyond me! What say you? Will you help me in my quest to diagnose my device and possibly find a cure?
Listed below is what occurs when the USB Cable is connected, either via PC or the Wall.
While USB Cable is disconnected:
Pressing or holding any of the buttons, together or individually, does absolutely nothing. (But the battery can't be dead. I've had the thing on charge all night!)
When USB Cable is connected:
http://youtu.be/J8FJSo_S7cQ
Without pressing anything, the device powers on into download mode and continues to reboot itself every few minutes.
Holding the power button (or all buttons together) reboots it back into download mode to repeat what I just described above.
Pressing any/all buttons at this point does nothing.
When I disconnect the USB Cable from the device while in Download Mode, the device shuts off after about 20 seconds.
I have seen this on occasion, but nothing different happens:
(I'm aware this means forced download mode.)

I'm able to use Odin completely normally and flash anything successfully as well. Yet it just reboots back into download mode. And if I leave it alone while connected to my PC with Odin up, this is what it looks like:
I've "successfully" installed Stock ROM, Kernel and PIT files. Nothing changes! I've also tried one-click unsoftbricker, heimdal, calling it names, begging it to work. Am I crazy or...is this thing done for?
Have you tried repartitioning it?
By clicking that check box in Odin? Yes.
Ah, you must've hardbricked your Galaxy.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1496360 < See if anything in that topic helps you.
You need to flash a ROM that has boot loaders in it...
When you use the unbrickable resurector, it flashes a boot loader that always boots to download mode. From download mode, you can flash a FULL rom, that will replace the boot loader. Then it will boot normally.

It's not hard bricked... that ROM will restore it. But after you flash that rom , you'll need to flash a different Rom for your region...

I never even heard of a "Full" ROM before. The problem I was having was apparently my bootloader - or lack-there-of.

[Q] Help, Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 Bricked.

Okay so i have let this sit for a while now becuase i just said forget about it i will get a new one later in time. well i changed my mind. A while back i tried to root my Samsung Galaxy Player 4.2 (Model: YP-Gl1CB/XAA) And (I believe this is what happened) I didn't pay attention to what i was doing and i believe i replaced the boot-loader with a WIFI backup? I know chances are i cannot fix this and its garbage now but i would like to give it one more shot. hopefully if i didn't explain something up here the pictures will help.

Dude you if actually did that you replaced your bootloader files the core of download/odin mode so you cannot flash any rom or kernel to fix that but i have had a similar problem on my 4.2 use this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2308221 from an experienced gp dev to fix mine (read through the comments) (i never replaced my bootloader files so i cannot guarantee this fix just had the error screen )but if you actually replaced your bootloader files you may have a hard bricked player try a usb jig it may not do much but you never know
