[Q] I cannot mount my internal storage via USB to PC - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
This is my first post and this place is still new to me so bare with me.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 Plus. Rooted. Android 4.2.2
I am looking to recover some deleted files in the internal storage however whenever I plug in the USB to the PC, programs like "Paragon Backup and Recovery" and "Remo Recover for Android" cannot detect the device.
USB Debugging is checked.
I have been searching but no luck. Maybe someone here can help.
Thanks!

try kies and wandojia to update the lastest driver, it would help

sometimes change to another port would help
and also, you could switch mode (MTP, Camera, Mass Storage) and sometimes with debugging.
Eventually your PC would recognize and thus you could access to the internal data!
TRY harder man

I tried all that. There is no option for Mass Storage. Otherwise I wouldn't be here lol.

Are you sure you have installed every drivers?

Make sure every driver is properly installed?
You could use the Chinese synchronizing software "Wandojia". It could auto-detect and install the driver for you!
Or sometimes the option is hid under the category of more settings- wireless and networks- USB utilities
Or in storage, but you have to press menu to select the option
Just keep trying, good luck !

how to recover deleted data from sd card ?

When I try to connect it to the computer over USB it shows up as a "Portable Device" in windows 7 and I am unable to use file recovery software on the computer because of this.
Is it possible to mount the internal memory over USB Mass Storage so I can try recovering the files with a windows program?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

USB Mass storage?

How do I enable USB Mass storage mode instead of the stupid MTP og PTP?
Regards,
BTJ
Not sure if this works for the SGS3 but it worked for the SGS2:
Bring up Settings.
Click More… (under Wireless and network).
Then select USB utilities ~ Set USB cable connection mode.
Select Connect storage to PC then.
Connect USB cable from phone to PC.
Select Turn on USB storage.
That’s all.
Sorry, no such settings in SGS3, we are stuch with MTP or PTP... Don't understand the logic behind removing USB Mass storage mode!! Both MTP and PTP are slow as hell and there is no support for S3 in libmtp at the moment to make matters worse... If I had known this, I would have reconsidered my choice of buying a SGS3.....
BTJ
Like the Nexus, /sdcard is mounted at /data/media (IIRC, mount point could be different), meaning that internal data and the internal sdcard space share the space, rather than being split. UMS removes access to the device that is mounted from the phone, so it cannot be used when the sdcard is shared in this fashion.
I thought libmtp worked? I've been using adb and a GUI for shifting lots of files, qtadb
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Seems to be a problem with both SII and SIII... But I will check out qtadb, thx...

So am I reading this right. You can't plug a USB cable in, the SD card appears then in explorer?
I have a sensation XE at moment and use this a lot for transferring files at work/home etc.
So can I not access my files normally now that I copy to SD card, eg docs etc?
Nope... But it sounds like you are using Windows so then MTP will work, kind of like you are used to...
BTJ
The idea about using MTP is it allows you to continue to use your phone without disruption, loading Mass Storage un-mounts the sd from your phone.
However I do think we should still be given a choice
Yes, I guess I understand the idea... What I don't understand is why they have removed the choice we used to have.... :-|
BTJ
I stil don't have an S3, but am a little confused on the MTP etc. Also I use a Mac and a Windows PC.
So when you plug in an S3 on a Windows PC, what does it do in MTP mode? just still allow you to drag/drop files? does the S3 come up as another drive or something in explore?
Also anyone with a Mac, how does this work?
cheers
This might give us some insight on why no USB Storage.

I think I got the jist of that article lol but does this mean android developement were looking for devices to have either internal storage or sd storage but because the SG3 has both its sort of screwed things up a bit?
So UMS might be released in a later patch to allow easier access to added SD storage? Or does the current setting allow access to both storage thru windows pc?
Soz if I come across as a noob I havent got sg3 yet but planning to get one in a few weeks for upgrade and Ive been trying to get the low down on positives and negatives before I get the phone
Keep things simple!
Please can someone answer this simply.
Can I plug in the device into my mac/pc and just transfer any file to the micro SD card whilst it is in the phone?
All I want to do is to be able to put avi files on it as samsung kies or doubletwist doesn't seem to suppor them...
A yes or a no with and explanation would be great ta!!

yes you can easily do that. No issues in that. Simply treat it as a normal pendrive in such a case.
sorted!

Thanks for the help. Although I figure out what everyone was talking about.
This is how I did it (maybe this will help others noobs as well):
You will need the 'Android File Transfer program' --> google search it!
1.Connect phone to PC (you will see usb icon at the top of the screen)
2. Pull down the notification centre.
3. Touch the usb thing.
4. Click PTP mode
5. Open the file transfer program
BOOM! Rock on nerds!

USB mode in samsung galaxy S3.

All the pictures which i captured from my S3 were stored in the internal memory of my phone. But unfortunately those pics got deleted.. and now when i tried to recover those pics i have a problem. I downloaded an app to enable Mass Storage Mode, it does not work on internal memory and it seems to be only for an external microsd… I really need to enable mass storage mode on the internal card so I can run a file recovery utility to restore deleted photos.. How can i recover this? pls help....
I'm stuck in a similar boat. Even on rooted CM10, I can't get USB mode. And there is currently a bug where it won't work in recovery either. I thought this would be a really simple thing, and it still boggles my mind why it is even removed as an option.
Connect phone to PC use Windows Explorer to open phone and sd card .

The answer is that you can't enable mass storage / UMC on the Galaxy S3, because the internal sdcard is not an independent partition, is just a subfolder of the data partition, unlike older devices like Galaxy S2.
You have to use phone side applications which are more limited of course.
Read this for further understanding:
[GUIDE] MTP and PTP (Media Transfer Protocol) vs UMC (Mass Storage Class)
Check here too:
[Q] How to view all sdcard files and folder from the computer, hidden & system too?
You may try some android photo recovery software, follow this step by step guide: android phone photo recovery
hope this helps you get back deleted photos from samsung galaxy S3 phone.

You can, if you use DriveDroid, however the mass storage mode is limited to the file you select as virtual drive.

Problem when plugging my S3 with USB to PC

When plugging my S3 with USB it only says its a portable mediaplayer and does not show whats on my SD-card, Please help!
the fact that it shows as a portable media player is normal: that's what it shows for me when it's either rooted or stock. you should be able to click on it and see 2 storage options your internal storage and the SD card.

do you have an SD card installed? maybe it's the drivers not working. try on another PC and see if it'll read.
Drivers Problem
This frequently happens to my computer so I know how you feel.
To solve this problem,
1. Go to devices and printers.
2. Click on your S3 device, it should be there.
3. Look at the bottom of the window
4. If it says that the device needs troubleshooting, right click the device and select troubleshoot.
5. Wait for troubleshooting to complete
6. Your SD Card and Phone memory should now pop up on your computer.
Unfortunately i have not been able to find a permanent workaround for this problem. So this solution has to be applied everytime you connect your phone to the pc.
Hit thanks if i helped you!
thanks guys! i got it working!
Did you use my solution to get it working?
I found when I use stock firmware that changing from connect to MTP to PTP and back again, my computer finds the phone, eventually but running an AOSP or Cyanogen the computer finds it without any problem

[Q] USB mass storage doesn't work on AOSP/AOKP roms

On every single AOSP/AOKP rom I've used since rooting my phone almost 3 years ago, I haven't been able to use data transfering over USB cable. If I connect the phone to my PC, it starts charging like it should, but I never get a prompt on the phone to enable Mass Storage, and no removable storage/devices are visible in Explorer. Is this normal behaviour or am I doing something wrong, maybe some option I haven't enabled in Settings?
I'm currently running NeatRom.
Also, where can I find some modems/basebands for my phone, which are compatible with Android Kitkat 4.4.4.?

Are the correct drivers installed. Have you installed the samsung USB mobile drivers? Check in device manager to confirm if you have or haven't got the correct drivers. Is there a mount storage option in the rom? If not, try rebooting into recovery and it should auto-mount the storages and your pc should pick up your phone, if not, your phone'a micro USB port has a damaged pin.
Now I really do feel stupid. :/
All I had to do was go to Storage under Settings and select Mass Storage under "USB Computer Connection".
Thanks for the help!
