[Q] Soft brick. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My GT-I9300 failed to restart after the battery went flat and had to be recharged.
I have it rooted with CWM and had Foxhound running on it.
on boot I get to the Samsung Galaxy screen and it freezes.
CWM works fine and I can reinstall custom Roms and the AROMA installer runs fine with everything seeming to go well.
But it still freezes every time.
Tried reinstalling stock rom using Odin and it didnt work.
used Odin to install PIT and have tried the Restore_Bootloader_XXBLFB and again it didn't work. ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/help/solved-pit-bricked-dead-problem-gt-t2535367 )
Can anyone point me in the right direction to find a solution?

Full wipe, including preload and internal sd before flashing. If efs partition is corrupt then it won't boot past loader.

More info
I have tried deleting everything and reinstalling it all but it still wont pass the boot screen.
CWM cannot mount /data /system or /preload

Try the rescue firmware, thread in general forum, otherwise the emmc is blown.

Given up on it now. Ive put it on ebay.

Boot loop

So I hate starting a new thread, but after searching for a day I have not been able to fix this issue.
I was running UnNamed v2.1.1 and wanted to update to the newest version. Following the instructions, I booted into CWM, wiped data/factory reset, installed the zip from my sd and rebooted. It worked fine, but I lost all my contacts which were on my SIM card (I was dumb and didn't back them up).
When I had previously updated I still had my contacts so I figured they should still be there. In an effort to find them I booted into CWM mode again and installed CM9 Nightly from my zip card. Again it booted fine, but still no contacts. I decided to go back again to UnNamed (wasn't a fan of CM9) and then I ran into issues.
My phone got stuck in the boot animation screen. I waited 20 min and nothing. Then I followed creepyncrawly's guide for returning to stock. My computer said "PASS" but when it rebooted it said "failed to mount /data (Unknown error: 0)". I turned off the phone and tried again and it seemed to work, but now my phone is still stuck in boot animation screen.
Any ideas how to fix this?
Reflash stock rom through Odin. But I would flash a cwm kernel through Odin, boot into recovery, and flash a rom.

Don't know what is installed with cm9, or if flashing cm9 repartitions, but you can find bootloaders, param.lfs and PIT and complete stock UCKH7 packages in the Download Repository linked in my signature.
Troubleshooting without enough information is only a shot in the dark. I often see problems with param.lfs associated with boot loop. Your error message not being able to mount /data partition suggests PIT. Just some thoughts to start you on the way.
Finally fixed, thanks for the suggestions. After flashing the stock rom in Odin it still wasn't working. I was wiping factory/data before flashing, but for some reason when I wiped after flashing it worked fine.

[Q] - odin won't flash - "make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk1p10"

So my Galaxy S II I9100M was updating, and I, unknowingly wiped data/factory reset'd my phone with the Siyah 3.1.1 kernel (which I now know has problems)
So this turned bad, because it got stuck there for a long time. No problem, this happens sometimes? No.
I reset the phone, try to re-install the Resurrection ROM but my emmc will no longer show up. Factory reset is a nogo again, but I have another rom on my extsd, which does install, but doesn't boot.
I go into odin, download mode etc, flash xxlph onto the phone, but here's the kicker:
the odin flash gets stuck at data.img
yadayadayada lots of different rom flashes later, none go past data.img
I can flash kernels, get into recovery mode with non-stock kernels, and get into download mode, but the /data partition doesn't format. I even tried a specific kernel for recovery, rogue recovery, and that can't format it either.
Neither can it find the cache partition for logs.
formatting the /data from mounts and storage gives the error "format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk1p10"
I saw somewhere (galaxy player 5 forums) that one can use adb to reset the partition sizes, but I have no table either. But I could find one. But I still don't know how to.
Anyone have any ideas and/or alternatives?
Love you all

From the sound of it the only way to recover from this is with a JTAG, any other info about it is likely in that thread.
Thank you very much. Thread can be closed

Bootloop with a "cant mount sd card" promt.........screwed?

Tab 10.1 root/rom running 4.1.1
I just flashed a jelly bean ROM and it was working perfectly until I set up google now and rebooted. It rebooted several times and made it back to the lock screen but it became worse everytime it rebooted until it was stuck at the boot animation.
I properly backed up all my data with the latest CWM version. BUT.......when I try to restore I get a E: Cant mount /sdcard. That means no factory reset. This thing doesnt have a physical sd card either so its not as simple as going to buy another one.
Is this a hardware/driver issue? Im kinda screwed here.........thoughts?
Some days ago, I had a similar problem. After flashing mobile Odin and reboot, I got a boot loop. factory reset and restore backup doesn't work. I'll had to flash stock rom with Odin because of a bad petition on my internal storage.
so if you want to flash, try to backup all data on PC (but I don't know how to do when the tab only goes to cwm).
After flashing the stock rom, I had to do a factory reset in stock recovery. I after that, my tab works fine. now I'm back in jb 4.1.1 Rom

Galaxy Player 4.0 Bricked

Hey XDA, I was hoping you could help me out here. I just don't know what to do anymore. So, here goes.
I decided to flash the Terrasilent kernal. All went well during installation. When I booted back into the stock rom after flashing my kernal, I saw that some system apps (gmail and market) were not installed. The icons were there, but they said they weren't installed. Also, all photos, videos, ect were gone. I already had them backed up, so no big deal. So, to try to fix it, I went into Odin and tried to reflash my stock rom through there. Everything worked fine, all was well. That's when I discovered my file system was messed up. Pretty much, it only displays /sdcard/Android, as well as /sdcard/DCIM/, /sdcard/LOST.DIR/ and /sdcard/external_sd/. So, I went ahead and attempted to reflash my kernal (custom kernal, terrasilent if you want to know.) to see if it would fix my ****. **** was not fixed, to say the least. And when Odin said it failed, I flipped out and did the stupidest thing imaginable; I unplugged my USB cable. So, I went and tried to boot up, and got the picture you get when you can't go into recovery, boot up or even download more. A cell phone connecting to a pc picture. So, then I tried following some guides on XDA to fix it, reflashed some stuff, and got close to fixing it. I reflashed my partition table and then tried to flash my terrasilent kernal once more, and it booted up into recovery with no issue. Btw, the kernal installs CWM recovery. But when I tried to reflash my stock rom, it didn't boot up. It said in Odin that it succeded, but in the recovery (which changed back to stock android recovery, I am not sure why) and I got a bunch of errors saying I'm missing all sorts of files. Like, E:failed to mount /cache (invalid argument) or E:copy_kernal_file :: Can't open /cache/recovery/recovery_kernal.log. XDA, please help me. I need this fixed, I can't afford to buy another phone, I'm broke. Help me.

I believe what you need to go is go into the android recovery by holding volume up + power. Once you get in there Wipe data/factory reset, and Wipe cache Partition because I believe it's bootlooping.

It didn't work. What do I do now? I tried to flash the Terrasilent kernel over it (which came with CWM) and it gave me the CWM recovery and kernel, but still nothing works. I tried reflashing the rom too but I can't get it to boot, just download mode and recovery loads now.

Well good thing is you're not hardbricked. Have you followed all these steps in this order?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28849870
Do you have the 4.0 stock rom? (Don't use the one I linked since it's for the 5.0). Also did you try wiping the dalvick?

Yes, I followed all those steps perfectly. I have reflashed my stock rom multiple times before. And I have wiped dalvick cache when I was able to get into my CWM recovery a few times to no avail. My pc recognized the device just fine until today. I just flashed my .pit file and the terrasilent kernel through heimdall, and now my device isn't being read through Odin OR Heimdall. It is recognized by my pc but not by those programs. And yes I am in download mode. I also tried flashing back to stock before but the recovery just gave me a bunch of red text errors.

[Q] Corrupt /cache causing bootloop

Hi,
My battery ran flat on my I9100 International GS2 I plugged it in and turned it on, it started to boot and then shut down. I left it to charge to 100% and now when I turn on I get bootloop around the Samsung logo. I suspect it's corrupted my bootloader and/or device partitions.
I'm running Stock+Root XXLSJ with Philz CWM 3.00 recovery (based on CWM 6.0.1.5)
When I boot into CWM - I get message: "E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last.log"
When I try to mount /cache it fails with similar message. (I also cannot mount /data. The others are OK)
When I try to wipe cache partition it fails to format it (hangs for about 10 mins saying "formatting", and then reboots my phone)
When I try to factory reset it fails to format /data (hangs for about 10 mins saying "formatting", and then reboots my phone)
So I suspect my /data and /cache are corrupt and need to be recreated.
How can I recreate these partitions?
I thought reflashing CWM might stick them back if they are missing - I tried a couple of different versions. No luck. Same errors.
I thought I'd take the opportunity to upgrade to CM10.1 RC2 - But I can't flash ROM in CWM - it fails with "Installation aborted (Status 7)"
I think I need to flash via ODIN and click the "Re-Partition" option unfortunately CM ROMS can't be flashed in with ODIN! Arrrgh!
So I think I need to flash another stock ROM via ODIN with re-partition option, then flash CM via CWM. It's a bit of a pain, do you think this should work (is that what repartition option does) or is there some other easier/better way?
Thanks
-KENT
As you've already tried dirty flashing (without wipe) your kernel (which rarely works, but worth a shot anyways), yeah, back to stock via Odin & restore backup or reflash rom/kernel & start again if you don't have recent backup.
Will this work ? It should. One bit of advice tho, I noticed you're planning to repartition.
Don't.
At least not in the first instance. Do a normal Odin flash of stock & see how that goes before you go down the repartition route. Doing that when not necessary seems to cause more bricked phones than every other cause put together.
