Can you install ROM's on a fake knock off - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i have this Galaxy S4 Gt-i9500 Mediatek, which is is a fake copy of the original. I've been using it for over a year and it has been great so far, totally worth it for the $150 price. I've been able to root it, and that has worked out great, but i want to take things to another level.
I'm thinking of installing a new ROM on it. But i dont know if it will work. I had a fake iPhone 4s a while ago and when i tried to install a new rom, it totally bricked it.
So the question is, will my phone work after installing a new ROM.
What do i need to know, as a ROM newbie i am
Thanks in advance guys

I can't help you with your device but I caution against experimentation unless you can aford to lose the use of the phone.
Mediatek devices are on my list as AVOID-AT-ALL-COSTS because the company has been so power-user/hacker/developer unfriendly. It now wants to be seen as developer-friendly (more likely has had to change slightly to secure participation in the Android One programme). I would suggest that a device like the 1st gen Moto G would have been a far better use of your $150 than this S4 clone or all the various other device-XXX clones. The Moto G works great, has little crap preloaded and, it has a healthier developer community than any mediatek device to date (afaik).
Good luck finding a rom. Please report back so your research might help others who bought the same phone.

I called T-Mobile and got them to let me get this sexy phone for $220. But before I get the phone I d to know the pros and cons of having this phone. I have already done all the initial research like specs and stuff. But I need the GS3 community to tell me what they like about the phone and what bugs them. I want you to list any little / specific thing. I am switching over from HTC Amaze 4G (sucky development) .... How Is the development in here? Want your guys opinions. You guys will be helping me a lot. I appreciate any help I can get.

Look around, plenty of development. Just about everyone here likes the phone, except the trolls. And even then most of them probably secretly like it too.
The phone is just awesome.
Now i don't recommend branded firmware but that's okay, it's android so you will probably put CM9 in there or any other custom ROM.
Btw, there is a forum for tmobile users, nothing here (international) will work with yours and you should ask them for opinions on performance, the international is a quadcore and US variants are dual core with different specs.
Goodluck.
Phone is awesome just great support here in XDA.
my only con is the Screen break easily, not that my phone's screen break but I've always read a thread every now and then and youtube videos that the screen breaks easily. So I handled my device gently so far didn't drop it ever since day 1
I absolutely love my SIII. Particularly like the speed of the processor and the quality of the screen. And the fact that JB is available (although there is only 1 official built ATM, for Poland; but the rest of the world will have an official build very shortly).
With most of my old phones, I have flashed custom ROM's within weeks of buying. But with this one, the Sammy ROM's are excellent and 5 months in I am still using them. I have tried a couple of custom's, but keep coming back to stock ROM's (obviously rooted, and occasionally custom kernels that support CIFS).
With regards to the development, and this forum, due to the popularity of the phone it is absolutely saturated with a myriad of people. There are lots of very talented devs, who contribute loads of really excellent work. But there are twice as many "noobs" (god I hate that word), who refuse to search, research, or learn before posting inane questions. Then there are twice as many as that of people who consider it their god given right to flame anyone for not being as geeky as they are.
Bottom line - the development for this phone is excellent, and full of talented, helpful people. You just have to hunt through a ton of cr4p to find them.
I have a iphone 3gs and now i have a sg3 for my birthday present
All i can say its the best phone,it tends to get hot when u playing games but i think its normal since its a quad core.
U can flash rom, install kernel and all that.I have my sg3 for about 1month plus.
At first i have no idea wads android, wads ics wads jelly bean. But slowly i pick it up along the way.
I have the latest siyal kernel with dual boot cristelo and romow rom
Best phone
There is no cons in SGS3, nothing which I can tell at the moment.
I love it at the moment..although the Galaxy Note 2 seems to be better with the 2GB RAM tho' ;p
Note:
I am not using any custom ROMs at the moment on my S3 even after several months after buying (pre-ordered in June )...I feel that its not yet necessary for the moment...
It was different as my old HTC Desire...I have to go for custom ROMs only after 2 weeks due to the lots and lots of weaknesses HTC Desire has and I need special scripts to solve it like EXT2SD, DALVIK2SD, etc. etc. etc.
Well just after i purchased my S3, i rooted it right away. I am officially addicted to flashing stuffs. •_•
I cant find any cons on an s3, it's an awesome phone (for now; give it like 6 months more, s4's gonna come) lol
PROS:
AMOLED screen is THE BOMB
QUADCORE, insane fast
2100mAh, longer battery life (a lot of you complain, idk how u guys use ur phone :| )
Yadayadayada )) you guys know the rest of the PROS

They complain because they use their phones hardcore. Plus it also depends on the rom they use. The last Tom I had before this one saved me so much battery life but with this new one I am plugged into a charger all day everyday. Just so I can use all the good features like Google now.

No roms?

So i just got this new phone and so far its great. I used to have s vibrant running ics passion ( sadly stolen :\) so i know what i can do and cant do with roms. But i came on to this and found out there are no roms for this phone. Why is that?

Lolz. You cant complain on XDA, after buying a phone without browsing the same phone in XDA. Similary these days new companies are formed only after suitable website name (www.xyz.com) is found.
Anyways this phone is new, only few months, and you need to keep some patience. There are really NO ROM/KERNEL DEVELOPERS HERE at the moment and the main reason is that, the phone have Locked Bootloader and some inbuilt restrictions and no good support from LG. No sources of Kernel is yet shared.
The good news is they (LG) have informed that they will provide unlocked version of Jelly Bean in next few months.:fingers-crossed:so everyone here have fingers crossed and literally doing nothing. May be after JB release more REAL developers will buy this phone and there will be too much of crowd in this forum too.
IMHO: If some strong developers from Optimus 2X forums, would buy this phone and come here, this phone will fly. They made roms and kernels inspite of Locked Bootloader by using some unique bypassing methods.

Dont lose hope. Patience is the key. This phone is enough strong to do magic. But Magicians are yet to come and perform.

For guideline, if you want a phone with a lot of android development (custom ROM), look here on XDA which phone have most vibrant community. Generally, Nexus phone and very popular phone (like SG SIII) have a lot of custom ROM.
L9 can be a popular phone though (maybe already). Big IPS screen, 1 GHz dual core with 1 GB RAM with affordable price. Now it depends on LG whether to embrace this community or not (my newbie understanding, it can be very difficult to have firmware/driver for camera, for example).

When we suggest someone any other phone, for ROM issue, it should be in similar category and price range. Well, you know, if one can "easily afford" SGS3 would not even look at L9.
But yes, if LG want people to buy this phone then, they must know what people want.

Stock ROM is enough for me, just give me the ability to root and JB update (dare I hope 4.2? )
For comparison, Samsung went straight to JB 4.1 from GB 2.3 with its S Advance.
Please keep pictures like that away from XDA.

Getting the YP-G70

Today or within the next few days, I will be replacing my (pathetic) YP-GI1 for the YP-G70. A charging issue messed up my device and the screen does not detect half of my touches. I have found great deals on Amazon of refurbished models running for 119 USD and was wondering if I should stick with the refurbished model or splurge for a new one. If any owners of this device have information and pros/cons, it would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers, 64kb.

Afaik, you can't get a YP-G70 "new" anymore but hey if you find a place post links....
I found a good refurbished deal and can get it tomorrow; I'm very tempted to install a custom ROM but kind of like Samsung's firmware. Should I keep it how it is, or use an up-to-date version of Android?

Go for 4.2, that has everything working apart from the fact you have to use a different camera app.

Thanks, I've managed to soft brick my device within 2 hours of receiving it, so while the recovery downloads I'll check it out.
EDIT: The recovery was successful so now I can start flashing a custom recovery.
I've been installing custom ROM's on my Galaxy S for years, just got the SIII and have had trouble with it. Now I'm moving on to my son's Galaxy Player 5. It took a bit of working, but I finally got to play with a couple ROM's on it.
We got his from Walmart for $139, haven't been able to find a better price out there. I am curious as to why they haven't developed a replacement for this. It definitely has a market out there! I don't want my son having a phone yet, and a tablet is too big. Someone NEEDS to put a dent in Apples Ipod Touch market, but Samsung seems to have abandoned this en devour.
Anyway, I am looking for what y'all think is the best ROM opportunity for the 5.0. The CM10.2 is fine, but has just about as much bloatware as Samsung. Tried Team Remics, but less and less support for this one, and it is crashing the keyboard. How is PACMAN?
Not very many choices for a good quality ROM. Is it easy to make one? Where would I start?
Thanks!
Jeff

I'm glad you've asked this question, and although I only got mine earlier this week I can give you some of my personal opinions on custom ROMs. I recommend sticking to stock 4.2 or 4.3. This includes PAC, CM 10.2, SlimBean, to name a few. PAC and SlimBean are very customisable while CM 10.2 is lightweight. I currently use SlimBean because of its options for customisation but CM 10.2 and PAC are also very good ROMs.

PAC is very customisable. You can change almost everything in the ROM, but be prepared for some bloatware. If you have the knowledge of uninstalling or disabling system apps this should not be as much of a problem. If you like to customise your device, this is (in my opinion) the first choice.
Another awesome alternative to PAC is SlimBean. Like I stated earlier, I currently run this on my phone. It isn't as bloated as PAC and includes Slimsizer which lets you uninstall system apps. It's my personal favourite.

This is mainly because the Galaxy Player 5.0 is an old device and not many [developers] have it. If you wish to make your own, it will take a fair amount of experience to do. You can start by porting a ROM from a similar device (such as the Galaxy S) to this device to get a feel for basic ROM development. Once you feel ready, and you have hours of time and at least 100 GB of storage available, you can build a ROM from source. Building from source means you have control over what apps are included in the ROM, so you can make a lightweight, fast distribution.
For now, I recommend sticking to Jelly Bean, but that is just my preference.
Hope I helped with something!
Cheers, 64kb

In need of Help from the Experienced MEizu MX4

I bought a Meizu MX4 MT6595 OCta Core model M641 Flyme OS 4.0.2U , Thought it would be great purchase. It seems I was unprepared for how new this phone is and the lack of information on how to optimize it for a US user. I cant update the OS to the Newer version of Flyme OS , though I would prefer to replace the OS with something US friendly. ALso cant install anything because the package installer crashes with everything. I have purchase protection on the phone for one more week, should I just return the phone? Or will their be ROM's available soon to replace FLyme? I like to learn technology is it possible for a novice to learn how to hack a phone and port an available ROM onto a Chinese phone? Or is this something extremely difficult and time consuming? Really just looking for some advice from the informed/ knowledgeable.

China devices are the worst to learn on as there is no kernel source for the device and moat avoid these devices. So you will have to take it on yourself if you want something. Yes it is time consuming and will have a learning curve.
Just got the phone and love it..
You should be able to update Flyme by finding 'upgrade' in your app drawer, but even after the upgrade its just a bit better.
The most current version is 4.0.3i
Not a big fan of Flyme ,I find it very buggy.
Im hoping for a cm rom of some sort. Would love to see something like the version on the onePlus .
LTE works with Rogers and Bell in Canada..
I like the phone as well I have tried the button in the panel to upgrade click it says android settings com has stopped, tried turning it off and upgrading from zip with zip stored in root directory, got nothing. Tried 4.0.3A ,4.0.3i, 4.03U also and everytime it says corrupted. My firmware version is 4.0.2 U . Tried lots of different ways to try and get google services on it and nothing happens. SOme apps from the app store installed like facebook and evernote. So kinda of feeling a little silly about purchasing this phone because the price vs hardware was spectacular. But I cant get everything I want to use on it. Looking for maybe some trouble shooting from experienced users or reassurance that i didnt just make a retarded mistake purchasing a phone i wont ever be able to use an i should just wait until developer community tackles these problems. Though dont know if that will matter if I can never update the thing. I am using windows 8 could could that be causing issues with upgrading my phone over the wire? Or should I try a .bin file ?

I hate to say it but your gonna be out of luck. Developers dont touch these devices. They seldom follow the GPL or have unlocked bootloaders and as they are mainly sold in China which doesnt have agreements set up with google in alot of places it is really a pain to get google services running. We have a forum for it but it has been long dead.

Well ill definitely try returning it then go with something a little closer to home. The Hardware vs price sucked me into buying it . What is a good deal on a phone right now? XDA developers favorite phone ? easiest to learn best one to modify. In hindsight probably should have tried finding this forum first rather than after I put money down on a phone but live and learn.
Give this a try.. crap...not letting me post a link...
google 'upgrading flyme to 4.0.3i' and the first link will give you some clear instruction and alternatives to get you going

Couple questions before I sell my Note2 on Swappa.

Hey guys. It's been a while since I've poked around the Note 2 sub-forum. A year or so ago I picked up a pair of 2013 Moto X's for my wife and I to make my life a little easier. I had a note 2, she had a s3. Playing admin for two devices, and keeping up with their individual quirks was proving to take up too much of my time, so, we decided to stream line. I wouldn't say the Motos are better by any standard, but, making the switch has made my life easier.
Recently, we've decided to move. We started going through our drawers cleaning things out and found these devices and thought we should sell them. They're both bootloader unlocked, so, they can run the latest and greatest CM builds. The thing is though, I've pretty much forgot what I'm doing with them.
I don't want to odin the device back to 4.1 and re-unlock it all, but I do want to clean up the device so none of our information is on it before shipping it off to it's new owner.
Can anyone offer any advice on how to wipe on the Note 2? Any changes that I should be made aware of that's happened with the device in the last year or so? I was gonna flash the unofficial CM12 build with gapps but if there's any other recommendations I'd love to hear them.
Thanks in advance.
