Same issue on stock Nexus 5. Saying "remind me to do X when I get home" or "when I get to work" have completely stopped working. (They've worked fine for more than a year) I can still specify home or work when I add a reminder manually, so Google hasn't lost my location settings.
Glad I'm not the only one. Seems like a bug, or they've decided to remove this feature. (I really, really hope they haven't.)

Very strange. Location based reminders other than home and work seem to see work fine... maybe it is server side at Google end. Hope not!

Something else I noticed: Go into Google Maps and remove your home address, then try "remind me to (something) when I get home." You'll be asked to set your home address, then the reminder will be saved correctly. Unfortunately, the next reminder won't work.
This makes me think it's a bug. It's still interpreting "when I get home" correctly, it's just choking when it tries to actually use your address.
Hopefully this is affecting everyone so they notice it quickly.
I've posted it on the Google products forum and 2 other people are reporting it.

It seems this is a widespread issue with trying to set reminder for Home or Work locations with voice or text searches.
Google are apparently aware of the issues - https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!searchin/en/google$20now/websearch/_Y0QQKclsIg/edp6sl_wWdcJ
hope we get a fix soon.
I've been posting on that Google Product forum thread regarding this matter. It occurs on my OnePlus One, Nexus 4, and Nexus 7. Interestingly, when you say, "navigate to home", it recognizes the home location and works as expected. It's only for location reminders.

Yeah I did notice, but couldn't be bothered to say in this post. Well done by the way, most people don't bother reporting things to google so they never get fixed.

Yep, there was a google maps update this morning for me and the widget is gone
it's mistakes like these that I think makes people annoyed at google.
Somewhere in project management they screwed up. Meanwhile they'll bring this back a few weeks later.
I know its so annoying as I use it a lot.

They won't be releasing the source code for Maps, it's their own proprietary software. Though there are plenty of API's to hook into maps and lattitude so I doubt it will be long before there are numerous widgets in the Play Store.

I don't think the removal of the widget is something Google missed, it's more than likely been removed intentionally.
Edit: It's likely been removed dude to the fact that Lattitude and nearby friends as linked into Google Now, which notifies automatically and has a card. Moving the feature to be an integral part of the OS rather than just sitting in an optional application.
Where did you get this information from? Is it just a guess, as I can not find a "friends" or any kind of Latitude-related card in google now?
If you want it badly enough you could just uninstall the recent maps update, I tried it and could get the widget back.

This worked for me, uninstall then reboot, latitude widget back and auto updates off for maps.
Any chance they will put it back in next release?
Try this
Here is a post from the Verizon forum. I haven't checked it on my phone yet so hopefully this is accurate:
Found it. The shortcut is gone and I can't find any other actual evidence of it but if you go into Google Maps and click the icon in the upper left corner it brings down a menu and latitude is on there.
My Latitude icon is missing as well, but there is a Latitude layer on Google Maps. My friends are still there, its just less convenient to get to.
Yep I think the widget is gone forever and ever lol I have gotten used to using latitude through the maps now

Well according to this post from an google emplyoee, It does seem the widget being gone is a fact, and only worth mentioning via a one line edit.

Stupid thoughts from google
I've tried VLingo, Google, several others. All have problems:
1. Terrible with matching Contact name; usally unbelievable off.
2. Many require touching the screen to advance.
Just lookting for something that works, prefereably without a data connection needed, activated by a simple long push on BT earpiece. Free not required.
Rooted, JB installed.

I've had good luck with the the built in Google voice dialer since ICS...vlingo was my go to before that. I think there is a dragon one available in the market but I haven't tried it.

I can't seem to find a clear answer, but doesn't Google Voice require having a Google Voice account with various phones listed and it automatically switches, etc? I would rather not get involved in that.
Tried Google Voice Dialer and it was terrible!
Took out all other voice dialer apps and tried the built-in JP Google Voice. I gave it ten names to dial; it got all ten wrong. Then I tried the same name five times; it got it wrong for four different guesses. It is closer to a random phone number generator than a voice dialer. But it did fine when dictating numbers, but that's not really what I want. I'll keep looking; there has to be something better than this.

I just switched off WiFi and Data and used google now. I said "call Home" and that's exactly what it displayed. Then it prompted me if I wanted to cancel, or skip ahead and call. There was also a red bar at the bottom that was progressing indicating that it would call my home number if no action indicated I wanted otherwise. Perfectly reasonable.

That's Google Voice, a different product than Google's Voice Search. Since 4.x, it has some great offline performance but it always pulls web results, as someone mentioned.
Try out Nuance / Dragon's newer app. Hopefully, that doesn't stream every word you dictate to a corporation that believes they can do whatever they want with it (like Swype's EULA).
Does anyone here use these kind of apps? I saw a couple posts for utter and speaktoit but they were short lived. I have browsed the internet but it seems like every site recommends a different on. I don't really want to go through the process of trying/learning every one to find the best one. I might do that with 2 or 3, but I would like to narrow it down to those 2 or 3 first.
One thing I would really like to have is the ability to set reminders just by speaking to the app. Things like pick up billy from soccer at 5:00, or pay the bills on Monday and have it put those in the calendar or a to do app or whatever and then have it send me a reminder on those days or times.

I'm using the jellybean sandwich rom, which is CM9 based, so I don't think I have access to the latest version of google now. But when I was using it, I never really got it, or learned how to use it effectively. Although it was pretty awesome when it told me to leave for work early in the morning because there was a lot of traffic
there are ways to get google now on cm9 but its easier to update your rom. i've been using JamieD81's unofficial cm10.2 and just flashed cm10.2 nightly and both have been really stable so far
My only issues with Dragon is that it's a huge app once the voice files download - and it uses a ton of RAM on standby even when I don't use it to alert me regarding messages. Also it does not speak much; It's better at providing search results...

I was thinking about trying his new 4.3 pacman rom, but I always hated how JB roms always seemed to random reboot when I was sending texts. I do have google now on my CM9 rom, it's just an older version and the play store says I can't update. But does google now allow me to tell it to set a reminder and then have it remind me.
Assistant does that, although it seems to store the reminders internally rather than put them on the calendar as well.
every other jb rom i've used always had random reboots but so far with wit the new 4.2 i've had no reboots.
you can set reminders with google now 2 ways. time based or location based and it will send a notification. i like the location based because you can say remind me to buy milk when i'm near the store and will send a notification. it also doesn't store to the calendar and they dont make it very convenient to view upcoming reminders. if you want to add to calendar you can add calendar events instead of reminders.

I always thought that would be a good idea to be able to set reminders like "buy milk" and have it go off when you were by a store, didn't realize google now could do that. I'm on a 4.3 rom now, not sure if I will stay with it cause it does have some issues, but I do have google now, so maybe I should learn how to use it. How does it handle the location based reminders. Do you have to tell it what location to remind you at or will it go off any "store" that in theory sells milk?

Hi, first post on XDA, and never used android before! Liking it so far, but have a couple of questions and would have a couple of questions.
I am using an HTC One (from Rogers wireless in canada, apologies if i posted in the wrong section, couldn't find a section for this phone). I came from using an iPhone, so naturally somethings are very different. I am not rooted, and currently using Nova Launcher free. Would like to stay un-rooted.
My first question is regarding the email notifications for the stock email app (not gmail). When I receive an email, in the notification drop down, there isnt a preview for the email, it only lists my email account, and "new email" underneath it. Any possible way to have it show a short mail preview, similar to iOS using the above launcher and stock firmware (4.1.2)?
The other question I had was if there is any possible way to set up a geo-fence which would enable a preset passcode to be used when i leave my house, and then disable passcodes when i arrive back home?
any help would be great, or if there is a similar thread already.
Thanks!!

I use the default mail app and I get a small preview as you call it (see attachment), But I'm on 4.2.2 not sure if that was introduced with the update or not.
As for the Geo- fence you can accomplish this with NFC Tags or an app called Tasker would allow you to setup your phone to do this.
I also came from an iPhone 4S I'll never go back

I went into google now search settings and performed the voice training and enabled the option for hot word detection from lock screen and power off but it doesn't work. the only time it works is when i'm at the home screen UNlocked OR at the google now search area. Screen off or from lock screen detection simply does not work.
does anyone else notice this?
I don't have the nexus 9 but I did install the latest google now search and launcher from apkmirror .com and there was an always listening option in 'hotword detection' in voice settings of the google now. There was also the screen off detection option but it was greyed out. I had the always listening in all apps option enabled and it was working greatly but the next day I woke up and the feature wasn't working so I went into settings and discovered that both of those options had disappeared (not greyed out but freaking disappeared), its some kind of google restriction, they are remotely restricting users from using these features for some unexplained reason.
Maybe its the same for u or it might be something else.
Same here, bit worked arter reboot
It works for a while after a reboot, but eventually stops working after a couple hours.

there is an option in Google Now -> Settings -> Voice -> OK google detection ....a check box exists here stating:
When Locked
Allow "OK Google" to start a voice search or action from a secure lock screen
so, it would seem that this is what was intended. perhaps what they meant here was that the screen has to be on and not timed out. dunno.
Yes, but screen has to be on. Only nexus 6 and 9 support GN with screen locked and off
Google search from locked screen works for a while and then stops. It's done this on my s4 and note 3. It is defenetly supposed to work from secure lock screen. In Google now settings there is a 3rd check box and you even get a warning stating anyone may be able to unlock your phone.
Google needs to fix this issue. I'm not sure what's up with these companies making screwed up software. Where are the devs, and why are they getting paid if they can't make flawless software. When I crash My car into a tree trying to unlock my phone and I press a law suit against google I'll bet they will fix it. Always takes a law suit to fix ****.
