[Q] [Problem] XPERIA Z2 - Headset Button/Key Control - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello XDA,
(TL;DR: Headset button is inconsistent, can't properly use it for music control)
I recently got my XPERIA Z2, uprading form the Z. I can't be more happy right now, no flaws, no serious problems.
It's just that this one-button headset does not work properly like I want it to.
For example on Cyanogenmod 11 on my Z I could simply click once for play/pause, double click (not too fast) for next track and triple click for goung to the previous track.
Right now it feels like the software which tasks these clicks is like on drugs.
My setup:
- XPERIA Z2 (D6503) Android 4.4.2 + root
- Build: 17.1.2.A.0.314
- Poweramp 2.0.9-build-564-uni
- V-MODA M100 crossfade Headphones
- Integrated microphone and button on the cord
The problem also occurs with the WALKMAN app.
I am pretty sure it's a software based problem.
Obviously I already looked around for some solutions:
- Headset Control Center
- JAYS Headset Control
- SmartKey by Sony
Main problem is that not every click is properly recognized. Long click results into Google Voice Search.
I hit the button in different click frequencies to find out how fast or slow I have to time the clicks, but well there is like no pattern at all.
The inconsistency is all the time, it does not matter if the display is on or off.
I could only find similiar threads on this XDA but no real working solution.
I'd be happy about some replies and maybe some solid solution.
Thanks in advance!

1. Does this change with playing with the cable
2. Does it do it with other headsets
3. There may not be any solutuon due to the fact the Z2 has a 5 pin jack instead of a ordinary 3 pin
4. :/ ive seen this with my old Xperia S headset

1. Cable is stable, it works perfectly fine on my Xperia Z
2. Don't have other headsets with one-buttons and mic attached. :/ Might look through the house later
3. I was thinking the same, but otherwise I can't imagine that's the problem. I actually can play/pause skip forward/backward just inconsistent. I am almost sure the problem would be gone if I install CM11 but tbh stock by Sony is pretty awesome without bloat.
I think that whatever processes the one-button input must have some problem. These other Headset Control apps or whatever had some options like delay and such precision stuff, sadly it does not work.
4. I don't remember it clearly but I think my Xperia Z had the same problem which got "fixed" due to another android firmware (CM11)

Well I got some kind of substitute, I installed Xposed Framework and binded the volume up/down with prev/next to my licking. Actually that works better for me when I am outdoor. Pushing that button on the cord is cool but it's usually below my jacket, while my hands are in the pocket near the phone.
I am fine with that. But I'll take a look at Xposed Additions, there is also some configuration with hardware buttons in general.
I'll update this post in case I find a decent workaround.
Thanks for your time though!

[Q] Bluetooth Audio

Hi there folks!
Hope someone can tell me ANYTHING to keep me from losing it completely...
I upgraded to an X10 mini pro from my Nokia 5530 a few weeks ago, and aside from a minor issue where the hardware keyboard appeared to be dying (It 'lost' the symbol button, acting like I had disabled the Default Input - regardless of how the default input checkbox was set. Turns out it was a hair or something inside the keyboard itself, who knew?!)
Anyway. The BIG feature the Nokia had that I REALLY liked was it's ability to play music on a bluetooth headset.
Now, the headset I use is one glommed from a Playstation 3 kit - It's high bandwidth, if a little bulky compared to the true phone ones, but handles audio as well as a wired headset, up to around 15 feet after which is starts to fade a bit.
I had it working well on the Nokia, it behaves relativly well on the PC, despite the chassis blocking the dongle back there, but I cannot, CANNOT for the life of me, make it work on the X10 Mini Pro.
It works with VOICE just dandy, with all it's superb range and definition.
But music stubbornly refuses to play through it.
Is this an X10 thing? Is it an Android thing?
I searched a fair bit before posting this, but while people have discussed several bluetooth issues, none of them really seem to address exactly this problem.
Am i missing some awesome (But overlooked by me) app? Am I weird for not wanting to have wires wrapped around me while cycling?
Please help a hopeless n00b!
Dude........
I have the X10 mini and my DELL BH200 headset works great with it.
No problems...
Check if you have kept the headset in discovery mode or not...

It allows you to listen to music through it then? Because thats what I need. Aside from that, mine already works perfectly...
The headset itself syncsby holding the power button for a few seconds, and drops out of sync mode once its linked to the host.
Like I said, the headset works perfectly aside from not playing music. Een while connected, it ONLY plays music from the phone speaker.
Yes you can play music thru bluetooth with any android device. Android is fully A2DP and AVRC compatible.
It must be your headset.
I use three different bluetooth headsets with absolutely no problems. Music, movies you name it. No lag (as I had in my ipod)

Okay, thanks for the replies! I will start trying out other headsets come payday! Being tightfisted I wanted to avoid the necessity but if you guys are having not trouble then it looks like I must bite the bullet.

Compatible earphones?

Right, now this almost made me send this phone back, thats how much it annoyed me, but i decided to soldier on none-the-less. I have a pair of Sony in earphones with remote, said remote works on my Desire, with every music player ive ever used in the last 19 months, never had a problem, but for some reason they dont work with my Razr, and neither do a pair of iPod/iPhone in earphones that are kicking around the abode (the missus', not mine ), with any music player i try that i know works on my Desire.
I queried this on another forum and apparently both sets of earphones i tried are "incompatible" Is this true? are only certain earphones able to work with the Razr? And if so, does anyone know if there is a "compatible" list of earphones that work?
Could you good people just list the earphones that work for you, and maybe we could get a good list of working sets for people to be able to reference to, to make life a bit easier for all us music listen too'ers.
Any help with this would be much appreciated, and not just by me im sure.

Try "Headset Droid" out. I haven't tested with the RAZR, but it's worked for me on every other device.
I can confirm my SGS2 in-earphones are working flawlessly on my RAZR.
As for buttons, try one of the apps for assigning the buttons to functions.
any of these work for beats?

ugh, seriously? Google needs to standardize the headset controls pronto - this is a problem that should NOT exist..My RAZR arrives today so I'll post later this evening (CST) if the JLab J3M's work or not.
If all else fails, there's always bluetooth (those controls are standardized, so they'll work). I personally like the Jabra Clipper (if you can still find it). Allows you to use any set of headphones you prefer with the bluetooth receiver.

Ok, so without Headset Droid installed, my JLab's did not work - at all. Not even pause worked.
I installed Headset Droid and configured it as such:
General Settings ->
Double Click Delay: 250ms
Click and hold delay: 450ms
Target Media Player: Music
Ignore Simulated Clicks: NOT checked
Button Actions -> Play/Pause button actions ->
Single Click: Play/Pause + answer call/end call
Double Click: Next Track + decline call/mute mic
Triple Click: Next Track + repeat caller
Quadruple Click: Next Track
Click and Hold: Volume reset and rise
Double click and hold: rewind
triple click and hold: fast forward
These settings work acceptably with the stock music app (and I'm sure they'll work for any 3rd party app as well, just change the target media player setting).
Remember: Headset Droid will not work if on the main screen it doesn't say "service is activated". Headset droid should automatically start once it detects the use of headset controls.
You can try to tweak it for better response (mine's not perfect) by clicking on "headset monitor" and testing to see how your headset button presses are being interpreted by the system. You may need to change delays or other settings to get it just right for your tastes (i'm not 100% happy with mine yet either).
This is the only solution I have..but it's certainly better than buying a new headset that will most likely sound like..well..awful. Once it's set right, you never have to touch it again, it really is a silent app - if you like it, throw some cash the developer's way (as I have).
is there something like this for the razr

Yep I've had probs, when running I've randomly called people, not sure how as there's no controls on my Panasonic sport headphones, but did have endomondo and the music player running, perhaps there was a software conflict, any one else had it?
Hi, i have AKG Q350. Control (vol + & -) and mic don't work
I have a Motorola S10-HD Bluetooth head set. Sense it is motorola, all functions work with the RAZR, to include, play, pause, skip, go back a song, and volume. With a built in mike you can also send and receive phone calls.
Being wireless, it's great for working out or what ever. I have great range with mine. Haven't had any issues with sweat or humidity.
Only draw backs, if you have a small head, it may not fit you correctly. Also, sense the 2.3.6 update, volume is very loud. I have to keep all media volumes turned all the way down most of the time. And with the Battery/receiver portion in the back, it's not very comfortable to lay on. I have to go with regular head phones when lounging on the couch.
I love them for 95% of the day though. Give them a look.
Headphone jack wiring
I had this problem as well - I tracked it down to the pinout of the jack being reversed at the tip (mic and ground reversed) - which makes iphone-compatible headsets not razr compatible.
I picked up a nice set of Seinheiser's specifically for android, and they worked without a hitch. Anything designed to work for apple though, forget it.
I am of course excluding bluetooth from this, I'm talking wired headsets only.
It's a pain. There's an adapter you can purchase - kvconnection had them the last time i looked - but it's annoying to need yet another bit of tech.
My dr dre ur beats that came with a sensation xe dont work on the razr. They do respond with the app player pro. But still not 100%

Bluetooth AVRCP / A2DP issues on XXLPQ stock

Reguardless what i connect to with bluetooth be it my computer, my car, or my bluetooth headset the music controls (play, pause, forward, reverse, and starting the voice talk thing) no longer seem to work properly if the screen is off when i activate them.
Scenario: Listen to music via bluetooth in my car.
Press voice call button on my deck
Phone screen is off, its sitting in the glove box (not legally allowed to be within reach when driving)
What SHOULD happen: Brings up the voice control app... "What would you like to do", and i can tell it to play music or make a call or text or whatever.
What DOES happen: most of the time nothing, returns an error that the phone does not support this feature.
The same happens for when i want to change the song or play/pause the music.
Also get the same sort of problem from my bluetooth headset (Blueant T1) when starting the "voice commands" option. If the phone screen is off i get an error, if the phone screen is on it works as it should.
This only started happening after updating to ICS XXLPQ (stock). Has anyone else noticed this? Is there a different version of ICS that works better, or a custom rom thats tweaked for everything? I use bluetooth damn near every day, it has to work for me.
Thanks in advance!
Bump? Does anyone know what im talking about, have you experienced this sort of thing? Are there others with this problem or should i try reinstalling my rom as if it were an isolated event? I could really use some direction here.
Hi,
I have same problem with my autoradio sony MXBT3900U.
GS2 reboot every 15 min when I use bluetooth function (a2dp, phone, etc.)
I've read that 4.0.4 ics version resolve this issue.
I think we should wait this update or install a custom rom with 4.0.4 (hydrogenics, etc.) or install a GB version.
rgs.
I've got the same problem while playing music in my car.
What I've found MIUI ICS roms support this nicely.
and I've been using them cause of this very purpose.
Actually I kinda like MIUI.
Regards
Gaurav
FWIW, when I got the message you mention about not supporting this feature, I found it was because it was trying to ask me which app I wanted to open in response to the button press.
Try pressing the BT button when screen unlocked and check that it's not something silly like that.
Having read your post properly, it probably isn't.
Yes, it most definately is not something silly like that. Glad to hear im not the only one, now to wait another 5 months to get an update from Samsung I really with sammy was better with updates...
Yep...got the same problem too - pause/play just wont have it on ICS. I've tried a few ICS ROMs - all got the same issue, sound is clear as bell and next/prev tracks work fine - but not pause/play! But must admit, I've yet to try a MIUI Rom.....suggestions?
ICS is proving a PITA for me. I'm on Wanamlite at the mo and I need Sky Go to work (which it does fine) but on the 4.0.4 ROMs I've tried like Hydrogen, it wont work! Knowing my luck, if I try a MUIU rom and I get pause/play to work on my BT headset - Sky Go won't
Found the following post when doing a search on it:-
Fix Bluetooth headset/headphone controls in Mog for Android 4 (ICS)
I submitted this via Mog Mobile App Support but was shot down and told to submit it as a "feature request" here. The problem is that Bluetooth play and pause controls do not work in the Mog app for Android 4 (ICS). The skip and rewind buttons work just fine, but play and pause are not responsive. Specifically, on my Galaxy Nexus device, I cannot play or pause music using the Bluetooth controls on any Bluetooth headset or headphones. This worked with previous versions of Android.
I have contacted the Android development team about this, and they said that the Play/Pause specification in ICS has changed a bit. And all that is required is a short coding change on your part (and other developers with similar apps).
They even provided the proper coding:

So it looks like there's the answer.... it's just that it may as well be written in Swahili for all the good it does me. Maybe the Devs can implement whatever that means, into the roms (or produce a flashable zip?)
EDIT: Found a temp workaround during more googling.... it's an app called Media Button Router and seems to do the job on my S2.... HTH somebody else here!
It helped me! Thanks! Now I hope they fix it for everybody. Media Button Router works for most of my audio apps. I wish it would just go back to the previously playing thing when you hit play though. That and it doesn't seem to recognize Audible for Android...

Wish we can find a fix for this. Also seems the volume buttons on a stereo headset do nothing!!! So as of right now if you want to change tracks or adjust volume while using and Bluetooth or wired stereo headset which has all the buttons on it, you have to pull this device out of your pocket and do it all manually on the device. Which makes my $150 headset useless as of right now. Anyone finding or developing a fix for this?

Not really true: My Sony MW1 BT headset works perfect... I would say the same about all headsets with dedicated buttons. Tried the urBeats for HTC at a store, works without any problems. But you don't have volume control on this one...
Im using the beats Tours and the volume doenst work neither does play/pause, or skip, and i cant use the play/pause/skip button to answer and end calls like i could on my iphone. you would think a phone branded with beats would fully work with beats headphones... update soon hopefully? for this and for sense 4.1 and android 4.2, i cant see why HTC wouldnt want to keep their flagship up to date with the most recent android as long as possible... tho the original HOX is just now getting the 4.1 update while 4.2 is already out for nexus devices

Bro, 4.2 has been out for what, 48hrs? Lol, hold your horses for our update and from the few using it they say its buggy and not as stable or good as JB 4.1. No rush here for a buggy OS.
I think it might be a Sense problem with the headset controls. Weird the other poster said it worked for him and his headset, must have a magical headset? I have these earbuds, http://www.bose.com/controller?url=..._ear_headphones/index.jsp&model=mie2i_headset and only control that works is to pause and play the track, that's it. They have this version of the same earbuds, http://www.bose.com/controller?url=...n_ear_headphones/index.jsp&model=mie2_headset specifically for Android devices so maybe this is why it doesn't fully work for me? Still doesn't seem very likely. Going to get the new Jaybird's for Xmass and they are fully compatible with Android so will find out then if the problem still arises, http://www.bestbuy.com/site/JayBird...p?id=1218813784721&skuId=6917118#tab=overview

Bluetooth audio stuttering

Hi everyone,
does anyone else also have problems with bluetooth audio? I'm using my z5c with two different audio devices (car stereo and a jbl bluetooth box) and the audio signal is stuttering quite often. I tried using different apps (so far Audible and Deezer) and with both I get the stuttering. When I disable and enable bluetooth again sometimes it works fine for a while and then it turns bad again. Most of the times the stuttering is back immediately after reconnecting. The same happens after restarting the app. When I'm switching to headphones or the internal speaker I don't have any stuttering at all.
Any ideas on how to fix this? If it stays with Android 6.0 I might have to send the phone in.

Had that happen a few times. Stuttering not related to distance or other apparent reasons. Also phone slows down like crszy sometimes. I think stock rom is plain ****.
Happens very often when using Garmin Fenix 2 with HR monitor in the same time. If the watch is to close to phone then sometimes I hear nothing - but I think it's Garmin's fault.
Doesn't happen at all in my case
I have not noticed any stuttering while connected to the Bluetooth in my car (Acura TSX) or my Homewerks Bluetooth speakers in my house.
This is CONSTANT for me while using a variety of bluetooth headphones/speakers. Usually if I pause the music for a moment, it'll stop doing it for a while. But it's driving me insane today. I do usually have the phone paired with a Moto 360 as well, but I haven't noticed a difference whether it's connected or not.
Strange. I use BT audio all the time with 3 different BT devices, and never experience stuttering. I do use a 3rd party player (GoneMAD Music Player), not sure if that is part of it.
I had this issue constantly with my Z Ultra, had no issue with my Z3 Compact, after ~4 months started having it constantly with my S6 Edge, and I noticed it twice with my Z5 Compact.
I think it's something Android related rather than something Sony-specific (and definitely not phone-specific).
I use it with a wireless Sony loudspeaker. My z3 compact never stuttered. My z5 compact (with the same speaker) does stutter a little, especially if i hold it. If it's on a table it is fine.
Sent from my E5823 using XDA Free mobile app
I don't experience stuttering at all, but I do however have the problem that the audio is too loud... Even on the lowest setting, audio through bluetooth headphones is almost too loud to listen to
Having connected the Z5 Compact to a Sony SBH-20 Bluetooth headset, I can confirm the stuttering issue. With music coming from Play Music the stutter happens sometimes and will not stop appearing until I stop and start the music. This also happens with navigation voices from Maps app.
Is this a Z5 Compact specific error or Android 5.x? My Motorola Razr i (4.4) never had this issue.

I use it with a wireless Sony loudspeaker. My z3 compact never stuttered. My z5 compact (with the same speaker) does stutter a little, especially if i hold it. If it's on a table it is fine.

Not sure if this applies to every case, but the stuttering in my case I found out was due to accidentally touching or holding the phone near the fingerprint sensor.
What this generates is a music playback gap (no phone vibration or other sound, which makes hard to understand what is happening). Tested with bluetooth headphones, Sony AS600BT.
I am having all kind of issues using audio on Bluetooth devices... And I have to do the pairing again every time I want to use one of these devices. It never connects automatically. I don't know if the app Throw or Smart connect have something to do with it.
Is this issue commonplace? I regularly use several pairs of Bluetooth headphones to listen to music with my phones. I've never had an issue with any Android devices stuttering over Bluetooth (Not since the Droid X2, anyways.), so I'm concerned by this. I had a Lumia 950 XL that had the issue, but a replacement seemed to solve that.
Just wondering, as I'm expecting my Z5c to be delivered Monday. Sorry for the necro!
I have the same issue with my Sony Z5 Compact, Audio through Bluetooth was working perfectly fine before Android 6.0 Software update, since the update the audio is very choppy/stuttering quite badly, even if the bluetooth earphones/reciever (Sony SBH20) is sat untop of the phone, I have tried different recievers/earphones, tried turning all apps off, turning wifi off, switching bluetooth on/off etc tried different music apps... tried most things, it happens at home/office and happens outside too, so my guess it's a Sony Bluetooth issue that has been effected by the Android Update.
Stuttering/chopping badly here as well... Using BT to a 2016 Volvo. Especially if the phone is used at the same time, no matter the load.
Had no problem before Marshmallow.
it's interesting... the last 5.x update solved the problem on my phone and the marshmallow update didn't change the fact... have you tried to reflash the firmware?
Found a possible solution which at least works temporarily in my case. Stuttering didn't happen since I performed the following:

Hi everyone,
I resolved Bluetooth audio stuttering on my Z5 Compact by wiping the cache partition.
This can be done the following way:
1. Go to Home screen
2. Press and hold both keys 5 seconds : Power + Volume Up
3. The smartphone should vibrate 3 times when done, and shutdown
4. Power on
The issue should be fixed.
This works on my Z5 Compact, I hope this can help you too.
