Cynogenmod 11 - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So guys, I have finally rooted my s3 (international version) after the warranty expired a week ago.
Have installed CWM and am in a search of ROM for it now.
For now I have decided to flash CM 11, but have few doubts about it:
Should I install m9 snapshot or m10 snapshot? I read it on reddit that m10 is not stable, so should I go for m9 instead for now?
And the zip file from their official site is around 212 MB, so does this zip file contain gaaps? If no, then where can I find the gaaps file for cm 11 m9 snapshot version?
I am kinda new to these things so sorry for being so noob.
And since I am flashing a rom for the first time, do I need to do anything else other than these steps:
1. Backup current rom using recovery.
2. Copy the zip file of the cm 11 rom in SD card.
3. Reboot into recovery, clear data, clear cache and clear dalvik cache.
4. Flash rom and gaaps(if not included in rom).

Any help regarding the above post

Only stock roms come with gapps.
You need to do some reading before you start playing.

I have actually read a lot about it, have done all the prerequisite steps (nandroid backup, efs folder backup etc), have downloaded cm 11 m9 and gaaps for it, now the only thing that is stopping me from flashing is rootSU post here which says:
"Note that Cyanogenmod is very controversial for the international version of the S3, there are technical issues, and newer stable version is always behind, I would NOT go for Cyanogenmod at the moment.."
So should i go ahead and flash cm 11? What do you guys suggest. I know i am being too preventive but this is my first time so i think this is understandable.

That was made 2 years ago. Ignore that and flash cm if you want to give it a try. Countless number of us use it no problems. If you don't like it you can always flash something else.

Thank you for your reply. So alright I will flash cm now, and will keep you updated about my experience of flashing my first rom. Lol.

Its funny how I am in the Exact same postion as you. I have CRM recovery and thinking about CM, I have downloaded the Snapshot. verison and hopefully will be flashing my first ever ROM today or tomorrow. Let me know how it goes for you please
DARK - Can i ask which CM verison and build are you CURRENLTY using? and how do you find it?
and quick question.
I see in some youtube vidoes ( I understand we wipe cache/dalvik/partion) but some people do something like Mount/ system thingy? Do I HAVE TO do that? as some vidoes DON'T do it?
Thank You

Have successfully flashed CM 11 M9 snapshot, and everything is good as of now.
And I also didn't mount anything, just follow the simple steps ( wipe data, cache, dalvik cache, flash rom and gaaps), and everything should go fine.

tHANKS How much FREE RAM do you get in CM11 Snapshot.
I will be doing the EXACT Same thing as you today or tomorow .
but I have a question , I'm stuck
How did you BACK UP your EFS folder/file?
I cant back it up suing the APP KTool Hack?

There is not much difference in free ram, but that should not be a problem I guess.
And for tha efs I actually used a app called Samsung tool (there is thread here on xda, go ahead and search it, else I will provide you tha link once I get on pc.) But after I read about k-tool, I even used it to backup it again and it worked for me fine. So you can try Samsung tools or may be some expert can help you in this regard.

Hey!!!!!! THANKS!!!
I USED Samsung TOOL
I JUST PUT THE FIRST EVER ROM ON MY PHONE!!!!!!
IT WORKS!!! :d
Im so happy I didn't screw anything lol!!!
How are you finding it?
only 1 stupid thing I got charged for a GPS because my phone automatic used mobile data!
CM11 Snapshot, is like Normal Stock Andriod. Has a few new things? like DPS and some terminal setting - Not sure.
It felt a bit laggy ,first but then speeded up.
WAHOOOO I GOT KITKAT!!!

Lol nice.
For me it wasn't laggy at all, buttery smotth. And yes as of now I haven't found any drastic changes, although haven't used phone much after updating but still I don't think my battery life is gonna improve :/ So most probably would be dead soon, will have to research on it though but thats out of topic now

Android operates differently to windows so the theory about free ram doesn't apply here.

Unfortunatly, I am now trying to find a new ROM

I lost 10% on stand by over night

[Q] [Q&A] About CM9 and restoring backup from CWM!!

Hey folks,
I just bought the white international SGS II and i'm loving it!
I previously had an Infuse 4g, so I am pretty experienced with flashing/backing up/ restoring...but I have questions/concerns regarding the I9100.
I am about to try out the CM9 Unstable, so I backed my current stock ROM up using CWM Manager 3.0 (I am on CF-Root 5.0) onto my Internal SD, as I do not have an external SD card.
Now, I have had bad experiences with CM7 with Infuse and ended up not being able to restore due to many problems like MD5 mismatch, different CWM version, and problems while restoring ( I think it said something like devblock??)
So I'm pretty worried about not being able to restore back to the backup i just made.
So correct me if I'm wrong folks,
1) Go into CWM, flash CM9(once? twice?), Gapps, Faceunlock,
2) Data wipe/factory reset
3) Reboot
and should I choose to restore back to the stock Rom backup,
just go into CM9's recovery and restore..?
will this method give me problems restoring? will I have different versions of CWM recovery from the one I have currently? Is there any way to check if my back up was made properly?
Thanks a lot folks! Appreciate it!
Edit: "Make sure you're already running ICS bootloader (if not, go to SamMobiles and flash XXKP2 bootloader)". Is this necessary? Cus I have seen some folks say that they've not and was fine installing CM9.
First the procedure:
1. Wipe
2. Install CyanogenMod 9
3. Reboot
4. Install CyanogenMod again
5. Install gapps and face-unlock
Worked for me every time.
Your backups should work unless there were errors while creating them.
If you want some more safety, you can create a new backup after flashing the Siyah-kernel. The latest version uses the same version of ClockWorkMod as CyanogenMod 9.
Whether you need to flash the bootloader or not, depends on whether you already have it or not. I'm running galnet-MIUI and already had the bootloader installed. I don't know how to tell if you have it.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Ok...
I did further research and found out that Nandroid backup backs up everything EXCEPT the kernel.
I'm pretty sure that CM has its own kernel...but will it be CWM 5.0.2.7(the one i made backup in.)?
If it's not, the correct steps for me to restore my nandroid back up is to
1)boot into download mode from CM9,
2) put the cf-root kernel that i used in the ODIN PDA, flash,
3) turn off phone, reboot into CWM, then restore my nandroid back up right??
Can anyone please confirm this method??
I only have this phone and I cannot risk soft-bricking or hard-bricking this beautiful device.
Thanks in advance!
Also, i made a back up in blue recovery of CWM 5.0.2.7..does that matter?

thanks for the reply,
so I must have the ICS bootloaders in order for CM9 to work?
ooo siyah kernel method... that makes it easier! haha thanks so much!
I will proceed to do that!
btw, how is CM9 working for you?
do you think you'll be able to use it as a daily driver now that NITZ is gone??
1. Afaik cwm backs the kernel up and restores it too. (afaik = 99.9% sure, in this case)
2. CyanogenMod ships with its own kernel.
3. The kernel is not cwm. ClockWorkMod is just the recovery that is integrated into the kernel. CyanogenMod 9 has cwm-recovery 5.5 (Siyah too btw)
4. You don't need to use download-mode to restore.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
You must have ICS-bootleggers. He did not say that for fun xD.
Is it suitable as daily driver for me?
Nope.avi
Why?
Accelerometer is unresponsive, so it takes forever to flip your screen.
Battery drainage is horrible.
Camera isn't working properly.
And the biggest no-go for me:
The device gets way to hot when using it.

alright,
thanks for the information!
I'll flash the Siyah kernel
Btw,
Flashing CM9 Zip does not flash the ICS bootloader right?
so then if I want to restore to my GB 2.3.5, would I need to flash GB bootloaders before restoring via Odin??
If the zip would flash the loaders, he wouldn't have mentioned it.
They're backwards-compatible.

If you need to make a post in the Q&A forums about flashing CM9, then you are definitely not the sort of person who should be flashing it. It is in very much a beta stage and there is a very high possibility it will **** your phone up even if you have done nothing wrong. If that happens you need to be the sort of person with enough experience to solve the problem by themselves. If you are asking questions before you've even flashed it then really, it's not for you. Use CM7, at the moment it's better than CM9 in every single way.

I couldnt agree more... i think people here on XDA need to stop trying to be all hot **** saying Oh you asked a question your a noob... in reality most ppl here want to ask the same question but dont because afraid of getting *****ed out... and when someone else asks... try to be badass and put the person down...
Iv used a Galaxy S and a Moto Atrix and now a S2... flashed the life out of each phone along with all kinds of stuff and mods... yet i would have wanted to ask these same questions before flashing hence googled and found this thread... So thanks to those that replied as well... i was about to flash ics till i read this and guess imma hold back now even more...
But again i think people here need to calm the hell down... a person asks a question in the thread and you call them a 'noob' and what not... a person asks a question in the Q&A section and again you tell them off... stop being such anal retentive trolls...

Most people should not flame some one as long as they show they have at least tried to look for an answer first. Yes we were all new at one time but we all learned.
Like you said you Googled and found your answer. Not that hard.
Think it's bad now. Should have seen it a few years ago. Lol clutter up the threads with questions that the answers were found with a search. You got warned. Do it twice and you went on vacation for a few days to learn how to search. So the next time you think people are being too hard. Remember it is not as hlbad as it was.
When I search for the answer, I ended up here.
are these considered ICS bootloaders? If not, when would you flash them, because they are completely unmentioned in any of the instructions or FAQs

Like many others, I've followed the tutorial at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416190 but have ended-up with a loop.
In my case I cannot find the Samsung ROM for the Canadian version ( I5500MUGJJ7 ) as can be seen here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13958293&postcount=1 I'm not the only one.
End result is I've bricked my phone I think (but hoping NOT).
I don't think by following that tutorial I made a backup so I don't think I can restore - or CAN I?
Can anyone help me out - THNKS

That's the point, I don't have the original ROM. I was following the tutorial and had NOT realised I wasn't making a backup and I don't think the original author even realized the it would happen that the Canadian ROM would be one of the very few which couldn't be found if things got screwed-up.

First try to get on the tutorial, from this sequence:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416190
1.1 We need to install a boot-loader as the Samsung one is very limited and just plain awful! That said, it wasn’t intended to be used for anything other than the Samsung software so it’s not awful from their point of view but it’s pretty unfriendly to us.
To this
2.4 If you are new to use ClockworkMod recovery manager then before doing anything, please have a look at next screen to learn the navigation keys.
If this works, than we will talk what to do next.
Try different official rom, maybe it will work, you don't have anything to lose.

I don't think it's actually the ROM which is the problem but the "baseband". Twice I followed the tutorial and everything worked until it came time to restart the phone. At which time it went into the loop.

First time installing a custom ROM, I need some hand holding

Hey folks.
The S4 is my first smartphone. Ever. I rooted it a few weeks ago and have been playing with different tools and utilities. I love the extra control it gives me.
Been using Smartlauncher Pro as my launcher as well, but it doesn't give me the customization I want. I dig the UI though, it's minimalist just the way I like.
I've been keeping my eye out for ROM's I can try out, and I think I want to try Cynogen for the S4. However, I am terrified of destroying my investment. I've read horror stories of flashes gone wrong... I don't want to permanently brick my device.
Is there anyone here who can hold my hand while I install my ROM? I seriously have no idea what I'm doing, instructions or no.
...I sound so pathetic right now.
Thanks folks.

Do you have a custom recovery installed like TWRP or CWM? If you do all you need to do is download the rom (I put them on ext sd)....and gapps if your flashing cyanogen, boot into recovery, make a backup (I put this on my ext sd card too), wipe, flash rom, flash gapps and reboot.

Hi!
The first thing you need to find out is what build number you have. This will tell you if you are able to root and install recovery in order to put a new rom on the phone. Do NOT update your phone by the over the air update that is currently available! To find your build number go to settings: the more tab: about phone, then scroll down. If you have JDQ39.I545VRUAME7 then you are in the same boat as many of us and accidently did the upgrade which at this moment has no way to root. If you haven't done the upgrade than you need to find one of the many threads on here that will walk you through the process.
Hope this helps some, there are others on here that can give you a much more detailed walkthrough of how to root if you are on the correct older build.
The best advice I can give is to read the entire original post (OP) for the ROM you like, and as much of the thread as you can. 9 times out of 10 when someone has a problem with the ROM it's been discussed, and is often listed in the OP. Usually there are step by step instructions on installing the ROM. I believe there's a general ROM flashing guide in this forum somewhere as well.
Good luck and have fun :good:

I've been keeping my eye out for ROM's I can try out, and I think I want to try Cynogen for the S4. However, I am terrified of destroying my investment. I've read horror stories of flashes gone wrong... I don't want to permanently brick my device.
Is there anyone here who can hold my hand while I install my ROM? I seriously have no idea what I'm doing, instructions or no.
...I sound so pathetic right now.
Thanks folks.

You need to start reading, period.

JDQ39.I545VRUAMDK is the version I have. I froze the updater using Titanium a couple weeks ago... And my phone is already rooted.

That's good! You haven't been updated which means you can still flash ROMs. Are you familiar with both types of ROMs, TouchWiz and AOSP? CyanogenMod is an AOSP ROM, which will be completely different from what you're running right now, TouchWiz. You're rooted, but have you installed a custom recovery? You need one to flash ROM's, either TWRP or CWM. You can also make a nandroid backup in recovery, and if anything goes wrong, you can go back to exactly how you are now. Definitely read the OP of the ROM thread multiple times and follow the flashing instructions correctly.

Okay, I just made a full phone backup using GooManager/TWRP.
Now for the next step...

If anything goes wrong with the flash in the next step, go to restore and you'll be back to how you are now.
Did you download the ROM to your phone along with Gapps? For AOSP Roms you need a separate gapps package, which is Google apps.

I just started the download for gapps package using Goomanager.
I checked out the Cyanogenmod site, apparently there's no stable versions for the VZW GS4?
Oh wells, flash anyway! That's what I do!
Worst case scenario, you have to use Odin to get back to stock. I used to keep a nandroid on my PC for just in case scenarios as well. One time on my GNex I flashed something really bad and had to adb pull everything off my phone, wipe the whole thing, and start over.

Yeah you'll have to download a nightly, I don't think there are any stable versions out yet. Are you downloading it directly on your phone? Or on your PC?

AOKP help

I have the Galaxy Note 1 with Jellybean 4.1.2 on it. I have the phone rooted and all backed up on all counts. I'm trying to flash the aokp_quincyatt_unofficial_2013-08-28.zip file and it's giving me an error. Please don't ask what that error is because I can't make heads or tales of all the code. I can tell you its a status 7 error and it's telling me there is a problem in the zip file. I downloaded it 3 times and still get the same error. Can someone tell me what's going on. Did I not do something or need additional files?

I got it up and running. Thanks guys. But I will be flashing something else. This thing is running worse than the stock Rom. My messaging wont even load. It just keeps crashing out. I know there are mixed feelings about CM 10 based Roms and with this i'm gonna have to go with those that want to stay away from them.

aokp isnt a cm based rom its an aosp based rom
You may want to try to download the rom again and reflash. Make sure you see doing a full wipe. You can also get help within the AOKP thread.

Ok. So just to give it a fair chance I went ahead and did a another full data wipe. It is running better. I'm not sure if this has been an issue or even talked about in their thread, and being over 100 pages im not gonna look through it all...lol, But I used TB to restore my apps. no data. Just apps. I am aware that TB can screw up the build.prop on some Roms. So that is the main reason for the second data wipe. To see if that is in fact the cause of it running like crap. I also used sms backup to restore my texts.
And right now my phone is hanging like a ******.....Soooo....It looks like sms backup may be the culprit here. And you guys have to forgive me with all this because I have been out of the game for about a year now. When I first got this Note there were maybe 3 Roms out for it....lol. I am going to give this Rom it's fair run and just keep messing with things because I know all phones are not created equal. And from what I can see all you developers have done amazing work with these Roms.
That's why I'm back. I need to make my old phone new again... I was debating on whether or not to flash the Uber kernel. I know the basics of what a kernel is. But what I don't know is if I flash the kernel do you have to flash the Rom again or does the kernel just change and leave the OS intact?
You can flash the kernel no prob...........can someone tell me why people back up texts ...I don't get the point

You would not have to flash the rom again .. just the kernel. But the new Uber is for 4.3 and not 4.2 .. so it is not compatible.
The included kernel is built by Fuze to go with this rom.
Just to be sure you get the best experience with AOKP, your wipe should include Dalvik, Cache, Data, and system.
I restore with TiBu all my user apps and selected user app data.
I pretty much run the rom as is out of the box and it is doing a great job on my phone.
Shayne Some people restore texts to not lose certain conversations. That's why I do it. Bubba I am aware of the 4.3 kernel being incompatible. The older versions are however compatible. That's why I was considering it. The problem is, as everyone knows, all phones are the same. So one kernel may run super on your phone but not mine. I just want to get the best possible performance out of this Rom because I do like it. So far it is performing better after the second full wipe.
And by the way. My data connection is WAY better on this Rom than stock.

Glad it's working for ya.
I do have another question about that, or any, kernel. After flashing a kernel is it permanent? As in there is no flashing back to the previous kernel?

Fuze has his posted in the op so you can revert back. Here is a link: Fuze Kernel The only other way would be to make your Nandroid prior to flashing the kernel .. then revert back.
I'm not sure that the Fuze kernel at that link would be exactly the same as the latest release .. he is constantly tweaking it.

I am running CM11 with one plus one conversation.. I have found that every couple of calls there is no sound on either end and I have to reboot the phone. I have searched for an answer but can not find one. Does anyone know of a fix? Thanks and I already checked the website I got it all from and there is nothing on it about this issue.. thanks again

lol you and you're one plus one conversation haha, try using the rom with out it. If the problem goes away it just means that the mod is the cause of your issue.

Hmm just did a quick search in the cm11 thread and seen this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55196642&postcount=305 maybe you just need the right modem/radio installed.

Dzee could be correct about the modem… even if you have that modem. Go ahead and flash the modem zip in recovery. Wipe cache and dalvik. I even wipe cache and dalvik before rebooting.
The reason i say to flash it over itself if you already have it is because im wondering if you have been on stock jb before. You see.., ics and jb have a different partition layout and as ive said to others. You really should odin the stock jb to get those partitions correct before flashing any jb or kitkat roms.
But because of the specific way a zip flashes its contents. You maybe able to get away with just flashing the modem zip itself..and not have to mess with a one click exe or odin. Im not even sure if we have any one clicks here… but using odin and the stock firmware would be enough to correct the issue..if the modem doesnt work.
Atleast this is my take on your situation.
