So before you ask to search, which I have done but cannot come up with anything conclusive. This is perhaps the funky cool openness of Android that there are many solutions out there. If you could please share some of your opinions or experiences, it would be greatly appreciated. I am looking forward to the SGS II quite soon.
1) iTunes.... As the iPhone utilizes iTunes for the syncing of Apps, Music, Photos, Books and so on, my question is that what is a solution for Android Devices (SGS II) with Apps? Is there a method of backing up the APK files or apps to the computer that can be used at a later time (ADB is one but would like GUI). iTunes backs up download IPA files from phone to PC, and you can select to install them at any given time. iTunes also updates the purchased IPA's without the need of a handset being available.
I ask this question to limit the need to download each app every time I update a firmware. (Bandwidth in India isnt the best and can take time getting a 200MB Game)
2) DoubleTwist seems like a good solution, but does it sync with the stock Music app or requires the DoubleTwist app to play music? I can only assume that Kies will do the needful, but what about all the playlists already built on iTunes? Any Alternatives?
3) SD Card... So it may seem that this can be utilized for everything which includes backups and storage, while updating firmwares, does it require it to be removed so it does not corrupt any data during the update process?
4) Freezing Apps... Does this basically mean that the app exists but all of the files and dependencies associated with it are ignored and not used? Why not just uninstall or delete?
5) ODIN / Rooting... If you could direct me to any links you may have which give good info on the usage, warnings, requirements... Would appreciate it.
6) iOS SMS DB to Android? Do all the SMS Apps on the Android use the same principles and formats? I have read that the SMS DB (which I have extracted) can be formatted via CSV and imported on Android OS. Any guides please and if I import it, is it a central location that it is stored where any SMS app from the Android Market can use that DB or does it create its own DB.
Thats all I can come up with. Anticipating for some great advice and words of caution.
Thanks All.
Some basics applies to SGS1 but most are the same .

No but a removal of sim and sd card means no trouble from them .
Sorry can not answer re ITunes i just cut and paste music .
APK backup Titanium backup pro from the market .

1) +1 for Titanium Backup. By far the easiest way to backup files. Most file explorers will allow you to manually copy the apk files out of the apps directory.
2) If you want, you can use DoubleTwist for only the wifi syncing. The music that it imports will be accessible by any app, including the stock music player.
4) Freezing an app is a "trial uninstall" of sorts. It will disable it as far as the user is concerned, but leaves the data there if you want to unfreeze it later. It doesn't require a reinstall, and you'll keep your data for the app.
5) There is a quick rundown of Odin and rooting in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1076806&page=4
Thanks Slice.
Let me see if I got this correct. The APK file is like an IPA file consisting of the application data. Backing this up will back up the app?
Upgrading a firmware leaves the app data and app there or deletes it?
Thanks

Yes on the phone will be an app folder with all the installed apps i just copy this to sd card as a quick back up and PC . One can double click any APK and reinstall .
Upgrading a firmware leaves the app data and app there or deletes it?
Depends upon the upgrade genuine Kies upgrade leaves all data and apps .
Unofficial upgrades may not and like wise custom roms may not or may be produced as a wipe version to save install problems .

After playing with all the different android versions out there I think I'm running out of space on the device. The unit is a 16gb version and even with no apps or video or anything on it, I'm lucky if I have 4gb left with webos and CM9. Is this normal? If no, how do I fix it? Would wiping the unit completely and starting again be advisable?
Try installing "Tailor" from preware on webos to find out what the partitions are like; using that you can readjust the sizes to get what you need.
Nice....thanks. What about flattening the android side and going from scratch? There a howto for that?
install "file manager for honeycomb" I think its called. There's an option to view size which will tell you what files/folders are taking up space. Easiest way IMO. On my phone it helped me find out that lost.dir was taking up nearly 6 gigs of space, so I deleted it. You might have the same issue. The app is made by rhythym software
I actually am a huge fan of this app. Best file manager/root browser IMO. And I paid for root explorer! Since file manager has a root option, I don't know that I will ever use root explorer again.
Dumb question but is there any documentation on how to install it? I don't see it in the webos store
He's talking about an android file manager.
If you want to wipe completely and start fresh, there's a really good thread for that HERE that allows you to remove everything - including all of the partitions - and remake them from scratch.

Yes, you can download it from the market, or play I guess. Thing is, I doubt that doing a uninstall will do much for you. It sounds like you simply have a lot of old files built up over time. Android is partitioned on the hard drive, so it would *probably* take up the same amount of space whether you uninstall/reinstall or not. The rest of the hard drive is treated as SDcard space, which is why I suggested that app to see what's taking the most space.
In my case, lost.dir took six gigs of sd card. Reading up about it, it seems lost.dir is a folder for "orphaned" files, sort of like the recycle bin on a pc. It might be the same case for you.
Who makes it? I'm having trouble finding it. How would I install Taylor? I tried looking but the lost+found folder is small on mine.
File manager HD by rhythm software
Also, if you've been making a nandroid backup each time you flash a new rom, that could be taking up a fair bit of space too. It's under /clockwordmod/backup
ACMEUninstaller?

You have to install "Preware" first before you can get Tailor. Just search this site on how to install preware on the TouchPad or google it. Preware is like another app store for WebOs. You just have to follow a couple steps to get it on the TouchPad. Wish you luck.

I recently obtained a Star N9500, which is a Samsung Galaxy 4 clone. It's a very nice piece of hardware, with the exception of the pre-installed spamware apps. I'm going to detail how I discovered which system apps were the culprit so that you can follow a similar procedure on your Chinese Android device.
The symptoms are Chinese language spam notifications that when touched will immediately begin downloading some other app, most often a game or Chinese social networking/dating app. Other times, Chinese apps would just randomly install, or links to other Chinese sites would appear on the home screen. The problem is that there is no obvious app to uninstall to stop this from happening, AdAway doesn't prevent it, and none of the ad network / push detectors or blockers available in the Play Store found anything wrong. These apps are buried in the phone's firmware, and this must be solved with detective work.
The removal process requires your phone to be Rooted.
The first thing that I did was to Google the name of each and every .apk in the /system/apps folder. You'll have to use the Translate feature for most of the results. Only one app I Googled got a hit called “uuplay.apk”. Turns out that this is a known Chinese Adware app. I proceeded to rename it with a “.dis” extension with ES File Explorer and felt I solved the problem...but I didn't.
Sure enough the notification spam continued, so I knew there had to be more. None of the APKs in the system apps folder resulted in any Google hits, so I had to figure this out myself.
I proceeded to use ES File Explorer to copy every file in the “/system/apps” folder to my desktop computer. Next, I used 7-Zip to unzip every APK to my RAMDRive. I started to look at the individual files with Notepad++ but found this quite tedious. Then I realized that Chinese apps probably access Chinese servers with a “.cn” domain.
I fired up Agent Ransack and did a search inside all of the decompressed app files for “.cn”. Sure enough, two hits on “GoogleUpdate[3738].apk” and “GoogleService[3738].apk”. I looked inside the “classes.dex” files and sure enough found links to Chinese sites located at “http://g.10086.cn”. I also found mention of “com.google.system.king”. Ahhhhh that makes sense, because I noticed that the SD Card ended up with a folder of the same name with Chinese looking files inside, such as “hziee”, and also “jrinfo.cfg”.
I Googled the king string and found a Chinese site that described the app as “Android application management, convenient and practical, Fool phone management experts.” Ah-ha!!! So I renamed both of those APKs in the system app folder with a “.dis” extension, rebooted my phone and voila – no more spam They didn't fool me, and hopefully this post will help someone else out there with this infestation.
I attached the spamware app APKs from my phone to this thread for additional deconstruction by anyone interested. I'd be curious to know to what extent they would go in downloading spam.

Yes, be careful with those Chinese phones.
Some of them has self-register apps that send expensive sms messages to China. Some of them have also apps similar to those you mentioned.
Usually, you can delete the whole /system/vendor/app folder, full of Chinese crap.
Some of the apps are also located in the /system/app folder. Best way for non-experienced users is to search for apps description over the net if you're unsure of what a certain app does.
MTKDroidTools has some predefined apps list and can automatically remove Chinese stuff for you, but still there's a chance some new or differently named app is installed on the phone.
Ofcourse, for any of these manipulations you need root access.
Yeah I can imagine some of them have some nasty stuff loaded in, so definitely a good idea to scrutinize every app for anything suspicious. I think doing what I did above on any Chinese phone to search for any apps with links to .cn based domains isn't a bad idea, even if spamware isn't an issue. I also only use prepaid SIMs in these things for a reason
UPDATE 08-09-2013:
Quick Fix: If your phone has the same rogue files as mine did, root your phone, and delete the following from /system/apps: UUPLAY.APK, GoogleUpdate[3738].apk, GoogleService[3738].apk, SystemThread[3738].apk, Backup_File[3738].i, projectmkmassags.apk, and smsreg.apk.
I completely decompiled the APKs to Java code and found these strings inside:

None of those other APKs were present, but a datang_gaohong folder was on my SD card, as well as a folder called LogicDownloads that referenced these types of filenames. I deleted all of them and haven’t had them come back. I deleted a bunch of other non-dangerous bloatware as well. The phone is now about as perfect as I could imagine one being. Battery seems to go forever now as well.
mine ends all like GoogleService[3774]
i didn't understand if all those apps you listed on the last message , we should delete em all or only the one in capslock ?
sorry my questions i'm a bit newbi ;(
Delete them if you have them.
Also, zip up the "GoogleService[3774].apk " and any other 3774 apps you have and attach to a message on this thread...I'll look inside for Chinese links. Interesting you have a different set of numbers in brackets on yours, could be a version indicator or something.
Thank You
thank you for your reply , haven't deleted em all only ( uuplay ) so here are the others , hope is what you wanted . So if if delete those ones i won't have chinese apps news and autoinstall ?
Help, I can´t remove them!!!!!
Hello all,
First of all sorry for my bad English, it´s not my first language and thank you very much for helping us.
I have a N9500 with chinese applications and I´ll post all the applications in app folder. I try to delete:
GoogleUpdate[3774].apk, GoogleService[3774].apk, SystemThread[3774].apk and smsreg.apk
But I can´t delete or rename them, why? I´m root in the phone but I only get errors when I try it.
I´m using "ES FILE EXPLORER" for deleting them.
Again thank you very much

Thank you for this thread, I have been searching for a couple of days now for this!
I also have been wondering how I get these weird apps in my phone everytime I wake up, and find it already installed.
I noticed the folders you said which I also deleted, hoping it would fix the problem.
Anyways, thanks a lot for sharing this.
By the way, I really don't know how I got this malware, not really sure if it was preinstalled in my Cherry Mobile Superion TV2, or got it somewhere else in the apks I recently downloaded and installed.

Thanks guys, your thread helped me a lot.
Just removed uuplay.apk and uuairpush.apk.
Deleting/renaming them via ES Explorer didn't work for me, I had to use Root App Delete. Even that initially seemed to fail to remove the fake Google Play app, but then came up with a prompt to tap here to force removal, which worked.
Rebooted and done deep ESET scans yesterday and again today, looks like it is all gone.

Any faster way to find the culprit?
My Chinese phone Kolina 100+ always loads a spam website, whenever I try to open a link.
This happens with both stock and Dolphin browser.
Adaway and ad push detector only stopped ads in applications.
Not this annoying homepage.

Yes, I don't see this application before I scan my phone with Kaspersky anti-virus (and force the program to analyze system applications). So you probably have the same problem.

Hi there,
I have a problem. I recently got a Huwaei GX1s ( Huwaei SC-UL 10 ) phone from China. I have changed the language to English but once I get inside any apps already there or installed from its apps store they are opened in chinese language. I tried to download google translator but it doesn't download even Google Play Store won't open.
How can I solve this problem of Chinese language in apps???
Hey guys, I'm using the LG Optimus F6 (or D500). I rooted it today and started playing around, and now when I try installing any apk file I get an error saying "[app name] could not be installed. Free up some space and try again", however I have more than enough space on both internal and SD. I have no idea what's going on, and if anyone knows about this I'd thank you forever.
I'm going to list everything I did after rooting just in case it means anything:
Moved a few apps to SD and uninstalled bloatware
Tried to move chrome browser to sd by converting it to user app, and then it disappeared and I can't download it to the market due to "insufficient space"
Changed the boot animation in ROM Toolbox (which didn't work)
I'm not sure what caused it, but the issue appeared after I messed around with chrome with seems like a terrible idea cause I didn't really know very well what I was doing. Has anyone had this issue or know how to fix it? Thank you so much!
What do you mean disappeared? The file must still be there, use es file explorer and search for it.
Otherwise you'll need to flash the kdz for your phone.

Upgrade a mounted app/game
Hi madmack,
and thanks for your work.
Just a question: when an app / game gets an updated version, I've to install it from scratch and delete the old one or foldermount finds new obb or data copied in android folder and move it automatically??
Thanks a lot, cheers.

works well just wanted to drop thanks here ,
using it from last one year and it has getting better day by day ,hitted thanks as well jeep up the good work brother
Broken premium handling?
I have sent a bug report from the app via gmail, but I will try to be more verbose when describing the issue here, since I wrote it from a mobile phone. The issues concern premium version of this application (I could have easily write the binding script myself, but told myself what the heck, let's support the developer).
1. I have installed the free version from an account which I don't use for purchases on SG3 mini. So when I installed it through Google Play on the second device with the intention to go Premium later, it did install from this account anyway (and kept doing so), preventing me from buying the premium. This is the Play issue, but some apps let the user choose which account should be used for in-app billing. You may consider this.
2. When I paid for the premium from Xperia M, the payment succeeded and after 1-2 minutes the app became premium version. However, this did not happen on the SG3 mini, which keeps the "basic" version event after an reinstall and a hour after payment. When I try to buy the premium package ("Zakoupit premiovy balicek"), the account is the same and after clicking on Buy (Koupit) & Google Play, the Google Play gives me an error that I already own the entry (Chyba: Tuto polozku uz vlastnite) but pressing OK does not help, the premium features will not be activated and I get back to the "Buying" dialog.
Can you fix that?
EDIT: OK, one of the reviews mentions restarting the phone to get premium features in similar case. It helped, the app is now premium.
Foldermount stopped working
Today my z1 compact(kitkat) crashed and i had to use the off button near the sim slot. since then i cant mount any folders. I can still move data on sd and back but i cant mount anything. I tryed reinstalling, new folder pairs and reinstalling the sd fix. till there everything worked fine. Any Idea whats wrong?
Edit: im using 2.7 premium and the 4.4.4 Andoird with the .157 build
Can i mount the whole android/data directory as well as the whole android/obb directory onto my ext sd card, instead of individual app data or obb folders? Does it make any difference?
And another thing, what exactly do the green and white pins mean? If i leave a mounted directory's pin white, how is that bad for me?
Folder mount doesn't work anymore since lollipop update. App is shown as mounted, but app never works.. This is on my nvidia shields tablet wifi
Edit.. Got it to work.
paste data on external sd card
Why it isn't working when I paste data right in the external sd card and link folder with foldermount.
I can't paste the data on emmc (or internal sd) because I haven't enough space on it. When I touch the pin it colored green and I can see the data on the internal sd. But the game request for downloadin data from internet.
sdcard deleted and not fixed after renaming sdcard.backup
Hello sir,
I am using galaxy trend s7392.
I am usong stock rom only.
after opening the app it asked to patch system, i selected ok.
It replied patching failed. After reboot, sdcard was deleted.
As you mentioned in FAQ i deleted "sdcard" and renamed "sdcard.backup" to "sdcard".
But problem is not solved.
Pls respond to this issue.
Thanks in advance.
Do not see the android folders in foldermount
Hey all,
I'm really new to tablets and rooting. I have two Nextbook 7" that I just purchased for my kids to game on it comes with 4.4 kitkat on them. I used Kingo root to root them and made sure they got the SD fix so they could write to SD card. I did a ton of research into getting apps moved to the SD card to make room for more. I got foldermount and purchased the pro version. For whatever reason in storage/sdcard0 I don't see any sub folders. When using ES File Explorer I can see the android folder and it's sub folders of data and obb and the apps within them. In foldermount I don't see any of that. Spent quite a while trying to figure this out with no finds. Lots of internet searching didn't turn up anything for me either. I hear foldermount is the best so I'd like to get it working. Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks
Has anyone found an easy fix for MIUI V5 (4.4.2) ?
I can mount a data folder but not an OBB folder.
Thanks a lot.
Hello.
I'm running Android 4.2.2 on an old ZTE Blade Q. I purchased the pro version of foldermount and the problem I keep running into is that I can't update my apps through play store - I get an insufficient space message each time I try to update an app.
I have most of my apps mounted on the external SD, all their pins are green and the internal SD storage status shows that 2.21 GB out of 1.3 GB is used.
What am I doing wrong here? I can't benefit from the app if I can't solve this. :/
FolderMount vs link2sd?
i have link2sd pro.. from what i have read FolderMount only allows me to move a small amount of files that link2sd supposedly cant.. i have never tried FolderMount but if it is better id be interested in learning more about it.. does it have automatic linking functions like link2sd does or is everything manual?
mount /data to sdcard0 or extsdcard
hey mate, super grateful for the folder mount! nice one..
been tinkering with mounting from /data/data to sdcard0 or extsdcard but to no avail. I am aware of the warning message when i choose /path, but is there any work around for this?
as of the reason why, i want to install this one game, but it install 1 gb data directly to the device memory, and because of my GT I9100 only has 2 gb partition for the device memory, and i don't want to lose any of my data, i don't know what to do. i even uninstalled every other app but still hasn't reach the requirement.
hope u can help! thanks!
seems like no one is answering questions here anymore? guess ill stay with link2sd.. all the automated functions would have to give it the edge in comparison.. tbh though i havent tried FolderMount but thats due to lack of questions being answered.. basing my opinion solely on experience with link2sd and what i have read about FolderMount
@BHoller, hope I got your question right.
I'm using FolderMount parallel to Link2SD. It works fine. You have to Setup, which folder has to be mounted to which other place on your device (e.g. "Whatsapp/Media" to external SD). In my case I had to create a new folder on my ext SD with a separate File explorer, because FolderMount didn't do it.
Once mounted, FolderMount puts automatically the files to ext SD and does it also automatically after every restart.

I made the jump to Kit Kat and was hoping to clear up the issue with the storage restrictions with something like this. However after reading through the. Apps thread, I had some more questions.
So the MOD on the app thread noted, in fact on the last post I read today (December 19),to come here for questions when he/she was responding to another users post.
Well I'm here and I see a lot of questions from all the posts above........ but the answers just seem to have vanished! I'm certain they are here because the developer specifically noted that one of the strong points for this app is that he wouldn't abandon us and to read over the question and answer section because it would probably answer any questions that we may have, before asking him anything.
Ohhh wait maybe he his answers are just typed in a color font that it is just blending in with the background of all the post here......... right?
I guess I will have to go search for an app that displays this "invisible" text and come back.
Thanks for the redirect MOD!
