My !"/!&"!= Samsung S4 died on me yesterday. Or, at least the screen did.. Honestly I've been NOTHING but angry with the phone since I buyed it in january. 4G/LTE has never worked (only 3G), ****ty wifi-signal and now the screen that died from nothing at all.. And it kept asking me for it's SIM card.
Anywho, before I baught the ()!"/!)"?!" samsung I had a HTC Desire HD which I actually loved. Yes, it was old in the end; but with the help of custom ROMS and this forum it worked perfectly until I lost it after 4 years.
I _need_ to buy a phone that can be rooted without toooo much trouble (damn Samsung's KNOX too!) and that is well developed for in here.
I'm thinking about these models as for now and is still looking for other options
LG G3 (a tiny bit expensive still)
LG G2
HTC One M7 (M8 is way to expensive for me still, so I'm thinking about the old one)
HTC One M8 (if I by some miraculous way won alot of money... It's sooo sexy!)
Huawei Ascend P7 (not that developed for here on XDA)
Xperia Z2 (a bit expensive)
Sony Xperia Z3 Compact
Xperia Z1 (Well developed for..)
Huawei Ascend Mate7 (No custom ROMS yet and so on.. But it seems possible to root, and the UI Huawei ships it with has inbuilt themeing. I'm addicted to pretty phones. Anyone know price-tag of this? It varies SO MUCH online in Norway as far as I can see)
LG/Google Nexus 5 (only 16GB internal memory and no free slot for more.. But will I care?)
Xiaomi Mi 4 (Not that developed for... Yet? Hard to get ahold of when you need the international version?)
Sony Xperia Z Ultra (It's soooo huge, isn't it? I had a S4, and it was HUGE in my small girl-hands.)
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (Still a bit expensive, and then there's the KNOX...)

ZTE announced it's new Nubia Z5 phone yesterday, and both it and the Oppo Find 5 look quite nice. The Nubia is really quite cheap for such high-specs, the Find 5's appearance looks better than the Butterfly IMO, and the Butterfly will probably have the largest developer community. I think I'm going to get the Butterfly when I go to China anyway (in fact, all 3 phones are Chinese ) but just in case I change my mind, which phone is best?

ZTE is the worst brand in the world. Their phones ship powercycling and rebooting. NEVER buy a ZTE
I used to have a ZTE Blade after I sold my HD2, then after that I had a Galaxy S and then a Sensation. I didn't experience those issues before but then again, the Blade was AOSP, whereas the new phones' UI are now an AOSP-Touchwiz (ugh) cross that I don't remember the name of. Doing a quick search tells me that the Blade was the only ZTE phone to get a forum on XDA, so do you think the Nubia will have a reasonably large developer community?
I am on an old Galaxy S3.. i'm rooted and on AICP 6.0.1. My wife recently upgraded to the Iphone 6s+ and so she was asking if i wanted to get a new phone too.. so I started researching... I just don't know if a perfect phone for me is out there... I thought maybe some of you guys / girls can give me some advice based on my requirements:
NEED:
Must work on Verizon network
Android OS
Fingerprint Scanner (decent one, heard bad reviews on the S5)
Expandable Storage (i have a card and want to keep it)
5" to 5.5" screen. (don't want a HUGE phone.. like the V10 but i believe its too big for my hands)
Rootable - need to be able to go to a custom ROM that is debloated
Front Facing Camera (may be silly to say, but i know some lower end phones don't have..)
Bonuses:
Front Facing Speakers
Good Camera
on my radar was the
One Plus 2 but no expandable storage...
G4 but not fingerprint..
G5 but not rootable?
Nexus 5x but no expandable storage and hard to work on verizon?
HTC M9+ but not available in US ?
PRIV , but no fingerprint..
Sony X or Z5 , but couldn't find a Verizon variant..
HTC 10 - Looking Promising.. has all features... Root looks possible but only if i mail it out to be modded and sent back.. little nervous..
so any other recommendations would be GREATLY appreciated! :good:
Please advice me what to buy. I want an android-without-google phone. With e.g. cyanogenmod, or any other. I am good with computers, and coding, but myself I have no clue yet about Android development.
The Samsung Galaxy A3 (2016) seems better supported in this forum - so perhaps a fully functional ROM will appear earlier? True?
But it has only 1.5 GB RAM. All specs here.
The Wiko ufeel is cheaper and looks like the more powerful hardware (e.g. 3 GB RAM), all specs here, and their marketing stuff.
But xda-developers.com does not even have a subforum for Wiko yet? Does that perhaps mean, it is unlikely there will be a ROM soon?
But both have non-removable batteries, which sounds really idiotic.
Which other phone would you suggest in that price range, with similar specs? For which there is already (or soon will be) a fully functional alternative ROM?
I am asking because I own a Sony xperia E1 (yes, I know, stupid me), and even after 21 months there is no ROM ready. This time, I want to be cleverer, and first check the forums, before I buy the hardware.
What do you suggest? Any hint much appreciated!
Thanks a lot for your time!
P.S.:
Another (much pricier, probably too much for me?) suggestion was the Sony Z5 compact, but after my E1 experience I am not a big Sony fan anymore... (?)
But yes, all 3 phones are "small" - I really don't want a semi-tablet sized telephone.
Hi,
Out of the three phones I would advice the Sony Z5 compact... it's an amazing and solid device .... By far the best out of the three. If you are reluctant because of the experience you had with the E1, relax ... it's totally different. On the very plus side, the development is quite alive for all Sony device and you will probably extend it's longer then the other ones.
If you find out that you can't get, because it cost double the price of the 2 others. I would recommend the Wiko ufeel.
One friend of mine have it and I played a bit with it. It's a solid device. Beautiful (yes it depends), smooth, fast. The screen is not that great (not to say poor). Main camera do a descent job, not outstanding. Battery life is average by my standards (better than my LG G3, worst then the OP2)
... But you will probably never have a custom ROM for it here on XDA. To get it rooted we spend more then 2 weeks ... finally got it rooted with some Russian forums (used G-translate to read).
I would never recommend a Samsung device ... never ever. BULL****.
Depending on you taste and budget, have a look to the OPPO A37 and Huawei P9 lite. I dont know which country you are in, but they should be available all over the world.
My rating:
1. Sony Z5 compact
2. Huawei P9 lite
3. OPPO A37
4. Wiko ufeel
5. A3 (2016)
Continuation of the 2014 thread.
OK, I'll chime in. Just short of paying $1K for the new Note 8, I'd say the Z Ultra still holds its own.
Yup , Z ultra is my dailly driver for almost every thing , amazing battery and running KK, Aosp MM , lollipop , marshmellow and Noughat almost every thing , I bet it will run Oreo as well , coz of its powerful hardware ... if by any mean we will get the binaries and some devs who are still working on building .for this amazing machine..

I can ask you a tip ...
I had this terminal just came out, but then I sold it, now I bought it back, and as soon as I got installed a number of roms, but in all the roms I tried the battery convinces me. I changed the battery, but I think but I do not think the situation is combiata.
What rom you use?
Anyone still using Sony ultra z in Nvember 2020? I got myself a Huawei mate pro30 - like its speed , camera and the fact I can install as many applications that I like without worrying for its storage space and memory. Yet scrolling Facebook just on it just made me missed my Sony ultra z - I miss the big screen and the Xperia Chinese keyboard which offers t9 English keyboard and ability to write Chinese on it. I bought Huawei mate30¤ pro as it's half its original retail price and the fact of it has 5G option makes it an easy ( but regrettable decision)...

Yeah, still using it, for the same purpose I purchased it back in 2014. With OruxMaps it gives a great Bicyle GPS. It is easy & Cheap to repair (Battery, Screen, all easy to get) and I even bought a second one as backup. Latest Android 5 updates were supplied from this forum until end of last year - what more can you expect? Further Software updated would be great, but it will even continue to work without...
Hello, I'm a total noob when it comes to phones!
I was mostly happy with my Nexus 5. When the thing broke, phone insurance offered me a choice of replacements:
Samsung Galaxy J3
Huawei Honor 8
Sony Xperia XA1
Or £130 ($170)
but I don't know which one to pick!
Many thanks,
Dan.
