The thing is.. When I use original charger and original cable I had with phone in the box, it charges so slowly it can actually discharge while for example using skype.
Also funny thing is in settings/more/battery (android 4.3) it shows Charging (USB) when I am connected to the wall socket. The app "Galaxy charging current *lite*" shows it is receiving 460mA right now at average. It takes like whole night to charge. (at the time of posting it was 460mA, but I have to notice ,that using this original cable and charger from wall socket, phone itself somehow changes how much mA it takes as it varies from 100 up to 500 from long time observation)
When I use small micro usb – usb cable from my old Nokia 5800 Xpress music, it is charging at 1000mA and can charge even when using skype or anything else. With this cable I can charge from 0% to 100% in about 1-or 1,5h. (Here it is always constant - 1000 mA on average using that app)
I was googling and reading some posts from people with some S3 charging problems, and found that cables are the reason. I have noticed by visual comparison of S3 original cable and nokia cable that on the micro usb side, S3 cable has visible only 4 pins but nokia has visibl 5 pins.
1. Is the pin amount on usb micro side the reason for slower charging rate ?
2. But why the hell my phone thinks I am charging from USB when it is connected to wall socket when using original cable and charger ?
3. Is it safe to use that nokia cable to charge my phone ?
Thank you for replies !
Throw away the faulty charger, rating of the replacement is irrelevant as the phone controls the current used.

Hi, thank you for your reply. I apologize, may be because english is not my mother tongue, I do not undesrtand clearly what you are saying. Especially this part "rating of the replacement is irrelevant as "
May be I described my problem not accurately. I attached the photo of things I am writing about. I use still the same charger (number 1) I just either use original samsung cable I had with my S3 (number 2) or original nokia 5530 micro usb cable (number 3)
With S3 cable and original charger (1 + 2) it charges slowly and app in phone shows it gets at maximum 500 mA. Full charging (from 0% to 100%) takes about 8 hours at least. Also, sometimes the phone shows its connected to USB, although I am connected to wall socket. The thing is, that even when it shows AC, the app in the phone still shows it is getting somewhere between 100-500 mA. So charging is still slow. I have also noted, that current changes during the cycle of charging. Or even when I unplug and plug the charger, it sometimes changes the current (mA shown in the app)
When I use Nokia cable (1+3), current is always 1000 mA. Charging time is something more than hour (from 0% to 100%). Using the same charger, just changing the cable.
So I am unsure if it is safe to use that nokia cable. Can it somehow damage my battery or phone ?
Is the behavior of the original charger and cable (1+2) ok ?
Throw part 2 away.
Part 3 will not damage your phone.

Went to sleep last night with my Atrix plugged in as I normally have had all my phones, was playing with it right before I went to sleep and everything worked just fine, woke up this morning and the phone will not power on!
First tried to power it on unplugged and the green light flashed for 2 seconds, and nothing happened. Okay, weird, but I'll go with it. Plugged it in, and the green light stays on now until I press the power button! Once pressed, it flashes off, flashes on for 2 seconds and stays off. Nice. I thought the green light meant it was fully charged - when I woke up this morning, it had no green light on, but it was plugged in just fine all night - grabbed my Jawbone ERA and plugged it in to the charger I had the Atrix connected to and it started charging right away, so I know it works....
Pulled the battery, tried plugging it in and power it on without the battery. Nothing. Tried putting in the battery and plugging it in again to "jump start it" as I had done yesterday when I first got it - apparently you can't just charge the thing when connected to a laptop if the phone is off, it will power on even if you power it off again! Nothing.
What the hell happened in it's sleep? I KNOW rooting it didn't cause sleep death.... This thing doesn't have a custom ROM or any undervoltage adjustments, so why the hell is it acting up??? Damnit, right when I got EVERYTHING set up the way I wanted it too.... can't bring it in to the store and give it up with all my personal stuff on there now, I need this thing to power on to wipe it first!!! I'm leaving it connected to the laptop with the green light on for a while and will see what happens in an hour or so....
EDIT - just searched for and tried to hard reset the phone from this thread, the phone still won't even power on to get to the recovery screen!!!
UPDATE - see below and use the SUPPLIED Moto AC charger or at least one with over 5.0V - NOT a PC and NOT a USB hub!
use the charger that came with the phone. My old HTC ones won't charge the phone for some reason. I bet your battery is just dead.
Did you use the provided charger? I tried plugging my Atrix in to the charger I used for my N1, and found that it did not provide enough current. With the old charger, after the phone died, I had similar symptoms where the green light would flash but phone would not come on. Plugged it in with the Moto provided charger, and 5 minutes later all was good...
I had the same problem. Thought I was gonna have to take it back to the store. I don't know what the problem was but I took the battery out for 5 minutes. Then I plugged it into the wall charger(wouldn't work with PC). I didn't turn it on for 30 min, just left it on the charger. Then I hit the volume rocker and it showed the battery charging symbol which it didn't do before. And then I was able to power it on
Same thing here. I purposely drained my battery on the first use. Plugged the usb cable into the PC and nothing. Same blinking green light with no response. I also thought I'd have to return the phone. Then for S & Gs I plugged it into the wall charger and it came to life. Once I got the battery charged a little bit I plugged it into the PC and it started to charge again. Don't know why, but it worked.
Have been running around the house trying to find valid outlets, and that does indeed appear to be the problem. I found it out the hard way though, should have kept an eye on the thread - used a power outlet instead of a PC USB connection and the screen fired right up! Yes, the phone showed the battery with 0% in it, but at least the screen finally came on!
How I have my phone set up normally is connected to my charging valet on my dresser, connected with a 15 foot USB cable that plugs directly into my desktop. Since the extension is good for just one USB connection, I have that connected to a USB hub and then a MicroUSB cable connects my phone from there. The Captivate, and all the other phones I've ever used, not to mention my Zune and Jawbone ERA, all eat that up and have no issues since the USB hub is powered not by the computer (seven USB cables is just too many for a single PC connection) but by the power outlet in the charging valet. I wonder if the hub is distributing the power requirement for each device and the Atrix needs more than others.
I also figured out that the Moto charger has a 5.1V output on it, as does my Jawbone AC charger. Now I need to start making sure that my each one of my chargers in the cars I own has that same type amount of juice too! You go up 29% in battery capacity and so do the requirements to charge it, huh?
Thanks for all the help, marking this SOLVED....
I used the charger in my bedroom that I've used for the Captivate and others before it and it didn't provide enough juice to charge the Atrix. It quickly switched between charging and not charging. I still had 40% battery showing when I woke up though which was nice. It had been off of charge since 10am yesterday.
Plugged it into an HTC charger and it's fine. The one that didn't work is not a modular charger so the power cord is hard wired to the plug.
Alright, a quick update.... Got the phone charged to 100% while it was off and plugged into the AC outlet with the Moto charger. Put my SIM card back in it - couldn't be without a phone all day! - and fired up the Atrix. Went to Battery Info to see what the status is and while plugged into my USB hub, it says
Battery Status: Discharging
Power plug: USB
....
Battery Voltage: 4124 mV (or 4.124V)
Click to collapse
What the hell? Then I went right after that and plugged it into the Moto AC charger, it says:
Battery Status: Full
Power plug: AC
....
Battery Voltage: 4207 mV (or 4.207V)

Why are POWERED USB hubs and PCs not strong enough to charge the phone? I tried ALL my outlets in my vehicles just now and they ALL show full battery status and plugged into AC! Who screwed this up????

Wait, you have to have specific drivers on the PC so that the phone will allow a power cable (let's not even worry about it being a USB cable for a second) to charge the phone properly? I have the Motorola Media Link software installed, and that has a ton of drivers on it, that wasn't enough? MORE drivers are required to charge a cell phone? This is madness!
Sorry about the necromancy, but had this problem myself but it is NOT due to a lack of voltage. Thought I'd actually solve this, the problem is CURRENT.
USB2 ports will only ever supply 500ma which simply isn't enough to charge the atrix when it's dead. USB2 powered hubs won't supply any more than this either to meet the USB2 spec. The fact that the AC adapter works is because they tend to have a higher output current in the region of 1-2 amps (you may notice the phone, or any other device for that matter, charges faster with AC adapters for this reason).
On a similar note, cheap car chargers only output 500ma. I know with my desire I can have it plugged in and it charges, but if I use GPS it actually draws more current than it can charge at resulting in the battery draining (albeit, slowly).
So, make sure you have a higher current AC/Car charger, or alternatively, plug it into a USB3 port to charge as USB3 spec allows 900ma (some mobos output up to 1A) which is enough to charge the Atrix.

Not sure about this..... It's been about a year since I got all my USB3.0 gear, and I was super excited about it because I thought that my phone would charge ridiculously fast because of the added output, but I remember reading that 3.0 uses extra pins and those pins account for the added voltage and bandwidth of the cable - we don't have those extra pins when you step down from 3.0 to 2.0, so we lose the ability to charge devices faster as a result. I don't know if I actually proved that theory, but after I read up enough on it, I thought I just didn't have to with that knowledge..... again, correct me if I'm wrong, I've got a lot of 3.0 gear here!!!

There are indeed extra pins in the USB3 standard but these are to transmit data only. The original USB2 data pins are only there for legacy support and USB3 transmissions use the extra lines. There's still only the 1 VBUS pin which supplies the +5V power. There's also no harm in offering higher current on the connection as a device will only ever draw as much current as it needs until it tops out the supplier, not the other way round
EDIT: Another solution could be to use a splitter cable (common with 2.5" drives)so you can draw from 2 ports, but with a micro connector. I've never actually seen one with USB micro but a quick look on ebay says they do exist

This is the exact same issue that I am facing now. Did you ever manage to find a solution for this problem?
atrix 4g not coming on
Is there any real fix to this issue i have search high and low and all i am seeing people talking about the battery id dead ... i have two battery that is fully charger and the phone still not coming up.
Hi all, sorry that im posting after two years ago but i am facing exactly the same problem, but i plugged it in my USB port, wich i think its a usb2, and i got the screen on but the cellphone did not say charging instead of that was connect your charger, and it was lower than 3% then it turned off. What can it be a solution??
None of the avobe solutions worked?
Which rom/kernel are you using?
I too have this same issue. My Atrix won't come on. I have 2 of the same phone. I tried the charger and cable from both phones. Neither work. When I first plug it it, the green light comes on for a few seconds then it goes out. I even opened the phone and removed the battery. Used a voltage tested and found my battery has 3.7 volts. Thats almost 100% charge. So it not a problem of power. I plugged the phone to my computer and same green light for a few seconds then gone. Won't do anything. No battery display or anything. I even did the simulated battery removal procedure. Didn't work. Is there anything else I can try? Can't get to recovery mode without display unless someone has a fix for that?
how can u disable the usb charging? even if its in mass storage mode its keeps on charging.. pls help..
What's wrong with the phone charging?
Isn't it a good thing?
Charge properly
You wouldn’t think that there is a particular technique to plugging your Galaxy S 2 in to charge – and you’d be right. However, you should pay attention to when you charge. If you’re constantly topping up your phone’s battery whenever you get the opportunity, you won’t be doing it any favours.

Constant charging to 100% is actually bad for the battery, if you stop the charging at 90% your battery will live twice as long, with only a 10% drop in runtime.
I had an Motorola defy, and i am sure you could select not to charge the battery, when connected to your computer.
I'm also interested in the initial question...and my reason: if i connect my s2 with the mass-storage capable usb-port of a Samsung TV for viewing photos directly through the Media Player from the TV, i get an error from it saying too much current on usb because of the charging
so - how to avoid this?
A standard tv usb port does not provide enough power to charge the S2, you need a special adaptor that you plug you S2 charger into to provide extra power, see link below.
New Samsung TV`s don't know when, will provide more power to the usb ports so you will not need the charger in the future.

You guys are thinking of NiMh batteries, not Li+ batteries.
Li+ prefers a full charge, does not have a memory effect. If it stays at low power levels 10% it damages the batteries.
Li+ batteries have around 3000 to 5000 deep charge cycle, a deep charge is when you use to around 10% then charge.
It however has more than 2,000,000 micro charge cycles. Meaning you charge it at around 40%~80%
Battery has a cell life span, which means it is going to break regardless how you use it in 2 yrs time.
As for charging via TV, yes, you need a special cable, but that's for HDMI, not USB. The HDMI port is also the USB port on the phone. Standard USB Port supplies 5V 500mA, however, some Computers and Electrical Appliances with a USB port supply different amounts, depending on design.
Computers can supply 5V 1000mA, TVs might supply 5V but less than 500mA. Media Boxes might supply 5V but less than 500mA. Some USB chargers might supply 5V 1000mA but do not have signal in data+ data- lines, which causes the phone to lag while charging.
WIKIPEDIA KNOWS EVERYTHING. Wiki it, it will tell you it is true.. LOL!
so its oki if you plug the s2 to ur pc anytime and charge it anytime?
Pretty much.
I already got an adapter for connection via hdmi, but i forgot and tried to connect as mass-storage. Thought there might be a trick...
Hi everybody!
I'm having some problems when charging my device. I've noticed that when I use the stock charger with the stock micro USB data cable, the phone stops charging and it just charges the battery in 1% to 5% after I plugged it on the wall, and the charging led remains on. So I've left the phone plugged into the charger for 2 hours and nothing happens, the device remains cool and the charger remains cool either.
I tested the following scenaries and the results are pretty weird:
a) I tried using the stock SGS3's charger with my Nokia CA-101 data cable, and the phone charges successfully in about 2.5 hours from 0-100%.
b) I used the stock SGS3's charger and the stock data cable, and charged my old Xperia X10 mini pro and successfully charged 0-100% in about 1 hour.
c) I tried charging my SGS3 with it's stock data cable from USB port and It seems to charge very slowly: 20% per hour.
I don't like using different accesories to charge my phone, because I read somewhere that Samsung uses diferent usb pin arrangement because of the Device ID pin.
So my questions are:
What is happening with the phone/battery/charger/usb cable? They seem working well separately but not together.
Does the samsung micro usb data cable uses different pin arrangement than standad micro usb data cable? or Can I keep using my Nokia CA-101 micro usb data cable?
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Hi.
I have the Samsung Galaxy S3 it is a remarkably simple phone to disassemble and I'm thankful for that since...
I also had 6 different chargers and cables that would not charge the phone reliably, I took it to Sprint and of course they plugged it in and it charged ok when left alone not moved in any way. Well the charging for me was very intermittent and some cables not at all. It was as if the plug was inserted and removed and inserted over and over again, typical problem if the solder of some connection on the PCB is broken or high resistance for some reason.
I removed the PCB from the phone and examined it to find a micro USB mounted to the PCB with 6 + 5 additional conductors, the 6 that were in the middle of the connector I believe connect directly to the conductors of the USB cable. The other 5, 2 on one side and 3 on the other of the main 6 were broken solder joints on 2 of them. I have a really fine tip solder iron and a microscope which helps but is not totally necessary to re-wet the solder on each pin of the connector. Now my phone works like brand new!!!
I have at least 33 years experience with soldering, so this operation may not be for everyone.
Good luck,
Dude I wish I had the confidence to attempt something like that, well done you

Have you ever done simple mathematic & calcs based on the current output?
You have 2100mAh battery in SGS3, right? And you have STOCK charger. Output = 1A=1000mA => full charge (assuming 100% charging efficacy) would be 2.1hrs. Therefore, 2.5 hrs result from not 100% charging efficacy - simple.
Now, you have USB port in your laptop/computer. From USB 2.0 spec, its output is rated at 500mA => full charge would be more than 4hours.
The difference is result of not 100% efficacy of charging, but this, I assume, you can calculate by yourself (to give you a direction: how much data is spent from a phone to power the screen and to supplot media connection with computer, while charging via USB?)
Sorry that I had to give you some basic calcs from primary school, but... this is what you asked for.
Hello Seniors,
I have Samsung Galaxy S3 (I9300) international version and as my charger got damaged, I was using existing Nokia Micro USB charger with output of 5V & 1.2 Amp.
Samsung's original charger has got specifications of 5V & 1 Amp.
When I read about using higher current charger, many places it was mentioned that phone will charge faster. So I was ok to use this charger.
I can see that charging has become faster but the problem is when the phone is charging the screen do not respond to touch correctly.
Once I remove the charger it becomes normal.
So wanted to check if using this charger is there possibility of damaging the phone? And What is the reason that screen do not respond correctly for Nokia charger?
Looking forward for your expert advise....

Hi, I had a very similar issue with my old Atrix 2. I too was using a higher current charger because I didn't have the original fitting for my outlets. I don't think the phone took any damage but the screen would sometimes not respond or most of the time just do weird **** when touched...
The 'charging' bit is built into the phone, the charger just supplies a constant voltage up to a maximum rated current. If you use a charger with an insufficient current rating the charge period is extended, like if you plug usb into your pc.
Using a 1A (or higher, makes no difference) rated charger will enable your phone to charge the battery at maximum rate, as long as the usb connector fits you can't go wrong.
Problems will occur if you use a cheap charger, or faulty one where a poor earth can mess with the touch screen. Throw it away and get the older type Samsung (one piece including lead) which are much better quality than the newer three piece ones.
Thanks Boomboomer for your input regarding this issue.
But one thing which I want to point out is, the Nokia Charger which i am using has got no earthing pin at all. It is just a plastic connector given at the place of earth pin. So technically there is no earthing. My samsung charger also did not have earthing pin it has only 2 pins (Indian Connector Style)
So I am not sure if that(Earthing) will be impacting in any way...
Please correct me if I am wrong...
No impact
Your capacitive screen relies on your finger changing the minuscule voltages within the screen, the faulty charger (or lead) interferes with these voltages due to poor shielding (the 'earth' of the usb lead). The charger needs no mains earth connection, but the usb connector shield has to have a good connection to the 'zero' point of the electronics inside the charger.
Try another good charger, or lead, and the problem will vanish.
Not to worry at all, you can even charge with the 2A Galaxy Tab charger. Just do not use black market chargers

Short story: YES
I have a cheap no-name 1-m extension cable that makes my phone charge at ~500 mA with the original charger, according to Battery Monitor Widget (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ccc71.bmw). I later bought a longer (2 m) extension from "Cables to Go" (Amazon), same length, and I get up to ~1500 mA. So there's your answer. I haven't tested it with a DMM to tell whether it's the data or power wires, though.
Yes, the calbe do matters. I suggest you to purchase Micro USB calbes from trusted mobile accessories shop. Last month,I purchased (flat type) micro usb cable from a computer shop, no matter if I put to charge for the whole day, it heats up my phone but doesn't charge even 1%. Buying the wrong and low quality cable can cause damage to your phone and battery.
