[Q] Can I install Kernel after TowelRoot while keeping stock rom? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hi,
I have just installed TowelRoot and SuperSU.
I am looking to keep my stock verizon rom, but install a better kernel (any suggestions appreciated). Is this possible? if yes, what are the steps?
Thanks!

Quick answer - only if your phone. hasn't taken any updates, needs to still be on mdk to install custom kernels

Ugh ok, not on MDK anymore... so Safestrap is basically only good for installing rom... correct?

Correct

I have a question to go with that...If you can't install a custom kernel can you still tweak the stock one?

[Q] Is it necessary to flash custom recovery if using stock rom

Hi,
I'm running already Android 2.2.2 update 10E and I'm going to root my phone.
I want to use the same stock ROM.
Is it necessary that I need to flash custom recovery.
Please help & sorry for NooB question.
If you only want to root your phone there's no need to install custom recovery.

however, if u want to overclock, install touchlag fix, etc, you need custom recovery.
Thanks a lot for your replies. It helped me a lot.

Root and flashing questions from a beginner

Hi all. I am very familiar to android but this will be the first device I root and flash. I'm with bell mobility. I've been doing a lot of reading here lately and want to root and for now keep stock rom. I want to try ktoon kernel as well but haven't made up my mind about that.
I have some questions I need help with before I take any of this on. I understand that in order to flash a custom kernel I need to use cwm and I'm comfortable rooting and installing cwm. I want to be able to go to complete stock if I need to. My question is about getting that back. If I flash cwm but want to go back to 3e recovery will this work by simply flashing the bell stock rom previously posted by adamlange? Also I understand the custom kernel has modified wifi and bt drivers. If I flash the stock rom will this flash the stock kernel back as well. If not how do I flash the stock kernel through Odin? Will this stock kernel contain the drivers I need for wifi and bt? What are the main benefits of custom kernels? Is there any way to flash the custom kernel through Odin if I don't want to install cwm without tripping the counter?
I thank everyone in advance for helping me.

Where Download?

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but I need to install only a recovery, because a custom rom brings ROOT. I'll use ODIN, where I can find recoverys in tar format, because the one I have, is the site of ClockworkMod and is in zip.
Thanks to all.

why do you need a recovery if you are not going to install custom roms. You already have the stock recovery to whatever you are going to do

Lol, you must know that CWM is integrated into the kernel, so if you need CWM you must install a custom kernel(insecure kernel) having CWM, and all custom kernels are made to enable rooting, trying to push CWM into stock kernel(secure kernel) is pretty dangerous and you might brick your phone, and stock has its on recovery mode which you can use. Anyway before performing any wipe or factory reset check whether if you have super brick bug if you are running ICS 4.0.4, and stupid question or not try including more details about your phone.

Ok.
Before anything thanks.
I want to install a CUSTOM ROM, like cyanogem, slim bean, etc. So your idea is install a kernel, but I can install recovery and then custom rom, right?
And this insecure kernel, can you give me the link to download?
Thanks.
P.S. - My SII have Gingerbread 2.3.5. original, I don't have touch in nothing.

I suggest you to update your phone to official ICS before flashing an insecure kernel

Unlock & root with custom recovery

I'm coming from the S3 world. I've tried searching, but I'm a little confused. To install custom ROM/kernel for the S3 I had to unlock the phone & bootloader, then root & install custom recovery. What are the steps for the S4? It sounds like the bootloader can't be unlocked, but you can still install custom ROMs? Thank you!

If you have MKE you can flash custom recoveries and ROM's. If you have ME7 search out the Safe Strap posts and flash a compatible ROM, I find Hyperdrive rocks.

Thanks man! For either version, I will have to unlock & root first, right?
--EDIT-- So, do I have this right...I can only install a custom AOSP ROM if I have MDK firmware, which can be unlocked. Can't unlock and install one if on ME7?

Build NG6 Custom Recovery?

Hi,
I've scowered this forums and internet for a definitive answer, but I am at a loss. I have a GS4 with build VRUFNG6 and I want to flash ROMs. I rooted by downgradeding the kernel, using towel root, then upgrading again. Can I get a custom recovery like safestrap to flash ROMs or am I S.O.L?
Looking for answer to the same question stated above.

Thanks for that link. Can I be on NG6 and flash that? Or should I revert to the NC5 kernel for it?
Edit: found the thread with info.

NG6 Custom recovery
I am new to the Verizon GS4 I just Transferred from sprint. Land of the unlocked bootloader. I am now rooted by way of old kernel, root tool, new kernel method. I am so perplexed on how to get a custom recovery safely on this phone. Youtube videos are old and can find anything new online for ng6. I click the link posted from another user on this thread and it is inactive. I really would like to know how to safely get a custom recovery on this phone. also when I reboot the phone, it sometimes loses root... Is that normal??? I have rooted this phone over and over again due to this. I used root checker basic and it says I have root. I reboot sometimes and lose root. Can anyone please help me asap??? Thank you
