The "upgrade" of Market to Play Store was not smooth on my two Sony devices:
Tablet S and Xperia phones.
The connection was lost occasionally in the beginning dates, and finally, it was restored on my Xperia phones.
However, connection to "Market/Play Store" server went dead on my Tablet S totally since yesterday. So I
(i) uninstalled updates of "Market/Play Store" to return it to "Market" -> no use; then
(ii) suspecting something wrong with my machine, so I decided to perform a "Factory Reset". (That took me the whole afternoon to restore apps from backup... panic...). Yet, it is still dead, only leaving the message "Server error, Retry" at the centre.
(iii) I even install Play Store 3.4.7 and 3.5.15 app downloaded here somewhere to see if that makes any difference. The answer is still a big NO.
Any suggestion? Wifi connection to all other websites are fine without problem. All other app accounts are now reconnected. This "factory reset" gives me another problem that some of my purchased apps are now denying me from use, as my "Market/Play Store" account is not activated on this Tablet S.
Is this a general Tablet S issue or I need to find Sony to fix the hardware? Please kindly advise. Many thanks!
I don't have such problem, suggest to send it back to Sony to check and fix.

Thanks but not work. Log in to talk ok.
I can't believe that the problem cased regarding a hardware problem.
I guess it could be a problem with your Google account.
You could double check it with a other or new Google account.
(ask a friend or create a new one)
If it works well with a new/other account, I would contact the Google support to check and/or repair your main account.

I agree with you that I don't think this could be a HW problem. That's why I posted my question here to see if this is a common issue. I contacted Sony Support Live Chat and apparently this is not a common case, at least in US. My Tablet S was purchased in HK, so the chat could not end up with any solution, but suggesting me to seek for an upper level of support in HK. In fact, I am about to take it to the Sony Service this morning.
The good news is after three days of struggling and Factory Data Resetting (a total of three times! very painful to restore things each time...), strange thing happened just now that the "Market" connection returned, for no reason. After downloaded/installed a couple of app updates, "Market" then was upgraded to "Play Store". Things seems working fine now... Hope the regional Google finally have this resolved...
Many thanks again for your patience and suggestion!
Android Central had a post that stated Google issued a fix for the Google Play Movie app.
It doesn't mention any specific issues, but if one app was having issues, at least they caught it and fixed it quickly. Probably had something to do with the quick fix of the overall Market (fine Play store).

Yes, that might be a related issue. The curious thing, however, is it seems I am the only one to experience this... very interesting...
BTW, I need to further that I still have problem in buying apps using my Tablet S (Hong Kong version). I would receive this message most of the time:
"The item that you were attempting to purchase could not be found." Don't know if anyone here had similar experience?
And the nasty thing is I need to "factory data reset" to clear that. The more annoying thing is this message will return again soon for no apparent reason... Possibly, from your reference, be a problem between Sony and Google...
Why dont you send it back to Sony HK to have a complete check? they are conveniently located in HK and Kowloon side.

I am thankful to your suggestion. I went to Google support and confirmed that this is a general issue, not something peculiar to me alone. I need to travel in Greater China (i.e., Hong Kong, Macau, China and Taiwan) a lot because of my job nature. Among the areas only Play Store access from Hong Kong allows in-tablet Play Store purchase. I was in Macau this week, and it seems quite a few people in China and Macau have had the same issue of not connecting to Play Store.
I raised a question there concerning in-tablet Play Store purchase, and hope someone will write me an answer soon.
We HK users shouldn't complain anymore with regard to the availability of Playstation here since we are the lucky bunch who don't have the Play Store and wifi issues.
I guess now we are 2
I guess you are not alone any more, i got mine like 10 days ago, worked fine right out of the box, couple of upgrades, format...you know
then all of a sudden it diced not to connect any more, done most of what you guys done so fare none is working

Don't worry. I think Google is already aware of the issue and will, hopefully, have this fixed in your region, like mine, soon. However, there is still an issue left open to fix: purchase app through the in-tablet Play Store for people who need to carry the machine and access Play Store of different regions.
Taking back for service usually won't do much help, however, unless the service guys are smart enough to find out what is really the issue. My experience was that they were usually unhelpful. Within guarantee period, they would replace either the PCB or replace with a refurbished machine but will still leave the problem for you to hunt for an answer.
In our case, I think, it is not a hardware problem, but the stability of Android as a whole.
i can't agree more
there is few BB referring to flushing the registered Gmail account from the device witch according to the expert it never get off by just a factory reset.
it dose make seance, taken into consideration that factory reset is not firmware instillation or ROM for the device.
didn't got the micro cable yet other wise i'm welling even to go that far, interesting note, though i can pin point one or two website that i'm facing trouble browsing from my normal PC and i'm not 100% sure if these things related in some point from ISP part, you know some port been blocked or some crazy firewall policy, the issue for me that i really can't tested as such as i don't have enough knowledge about how this google play works.
hope things will get a bit better at least from your side

To my opinion, you should try to install gapps : you can find links from cyanogen or miui ... Did you tried this?

Anyone experiencing this problem?
This started to happen 2 days ago, when I open Google Play Store app. I just get a "Server Error" message with a retry button.
I tried to clear the app. data, reinstall the apk and even restore the tablet to factory settings to re-root. It's not a connection problem, my phone is connecting fine to Play Store. I cleared dalvik cache too, problem persist.
No trouble here. Running SD Version of CM7.
Mine is still working fine on cm7.
I forgot to mention, I'm using the usual root from SD card provided on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466583
I'm not on CM7 or anything.
Looks like it's time to try CM7, even after a factory reset and re-root, I get the old Market app and the server error message still shows up.
EDIT
I don't know what is happening here, I installed CM7 and I'm still getting the same error!!!
So guys, I found a solution, it seems that Google started to play dirty with us, I mean, with people who buy android devices outside their country of origin. This problem is described on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24070500#post24070500
This may be a problem to people like me, who lives in a country where some Android devices are not available for sale, or in my case, they are hefty overpriced by local stores, so I just buy off eBay which is much cheaper lol.
I don't understand why Google started to make this, it's so stupid. The solution is, install MarketEnabler and fake your region, and like magic, Android Market (or Google Play Store, whatever) will work again.
Just to make things clear, I tried CM7, CM9, stock + root, wipe caches, data etc and NOTHING worked, Market continued to show the server error message whatever the rom I had.
People outside US or other countries where B&N is not present, be advised, you may encounter some problems with Google Play Store from now on.
No connection from outside the U.S.
I have a NT (Rooted only via SD method) and live in Sweden and haven't had problems. Love it.
However, while here on a course in Switzerland I suddenly got the same problem. Server error...
I freaked out and began clearing cache, data, reset the google account everything. No luck.
A fellow nook owner from no less than Switzerland told me to be patient and try from the hotel wifi instead of the company guest wifi. Needless to say it worked just fine from the Hotel WiFi when I got back.
Whew.
So my advice is to give it a try from another hotspot and see if you have better luck. It could be getting blocked.
Confirming this error. I am also getting this "Server Error" with a retry button. Haven't tried MarketEnabler. Will report if it works.
I have seen similar posts on xda on different device forums.
Yes. MarketEnabler DOES fixes the problem. Just browsed to ME's googlecode site and downloaded the latest version(3.1.1.3 to be exact). Set a US carrier; everything solved.
To people with sd card root method, do not panic and try to reset your accounts on the tablet, you'll end with a factory reset screen and will loose all your data.
I learned this the hard way lol, I had to re-root and install gapps again (SD card method), but since Market was blocked, after rooting, I had to use adb to install MarketEnabler to gain access to market again and download GoLauncher, NT Hidden Settings and etc.
Now I backed up everything, if some disaster happens again, I'll just restore with CWM.

Please post questions in the Q&A section
Working again???
On Tuesday it wasn't working. Now I am back to the same company wifi and it is working again. I haven't installed Market Enabler.
Perhaps it was a temporary thing?
Anyway, I think I'll go ahead and install it because while Play works, I can't find much at all, so it certainly filter's on my country location. (currently Switzerland).
EDIT...
Just installed MarketEnabler(3.1.1.3) from a backup (since I couldn't find it over here...)
Now I see TONS of apps again.
So, for those of you outside the U.S. I recommend Enabler. You can switch between local and U.S. from the settings list. NICE.
Just be sure to restart Play.
Yes, I think it was temporary. Yesterday at 01:00 am Market became unavailable for about 10 minutes for my phone and tablet, when I saw this I thought "not again, and now on both my android devices?" and I thought market enabler was blocked or something, but I waited a little and market came back online after a few minutes. During this time, I restarted my nook, and by making this, market enabler changes are removed, but I could access the market without faking my region.
It seems that Google is making some chances on market and perhaps screwed something and took a few days to fix.

I started having this problem a couple of days ago myself and I'm in the US. I haven't found a fix. Am on a staighted rooted NT. CM7 on SD suddenly started having WIFI issues so I took it off.
I'll let you know if I get it fixed....

Hi guys. I just received my HTC Droid DNA from the US. It has an unlocked bootloader and has been rooted with TWRP installed. Most of the Verizon bloatware has been removed too.
But after logging into my UK Google Play account I can only access the Apps category. Nothing else. No Music, Books, or Movies.
I updated the Google Play services but no luck. I even tried with an updated APK and it still won't work.
I also tried accessing the Movie store from the Play Movies app but it just takes me to the site.
Any ideas? This has never happened before with an import device.
Thanks.
Could it be because I dont have a SIM card installed?
Its so strange. Whenever I load the Play Store it just automatically starts in the Apps page. It doesn't open the regular homepage with options for Apps, Music, Movies & TV, Books etc.
I have attached a screenshot showing what its like. Normally in the top left corner there would be an option to go from the apps page back to the main page but there simply isn't.
I have even tried changing the locale to English UK using apps like MultiLocale2 and others. When I load the Play Store after it looks like its about to load the main page but then it goes back again to the Apps page.
Even attempting to access the Book store from the Play Books app diverts me to the Play Store website http://play.google.com.
Clearly something is going on here. Something is blocking access to the other Play Services.
Also everything is in dollars $. I don't mind this as I had the same thing on my old Motorola Xoom, but the fact that the other services have gone is very strange.
This is really annoying now. I have tried the following:
Updating Google Play Services in the Play Store
Installing the latest Google Play Store APK
Turning on all location services
Changing my locale to English UK/GB and English US
Attempting to access the store categories from their respective apps e.g. Play Music app (just diverts me to the Play Store website)
Trying different languages in the Setup Wizard
Edited my Google Account and added my region as UK
Deleted preinstalled Play Music, Movies, Books APK/odex files
Restored my phone
None of these methods have worked. I can only access Apps in the Store. Nothing else.
Is it because the phone is rooted? Did deleting the bloatware cause any issues?
Are you running custom rom ? you mite wanna clear your cache IDK. I am a noob who is just trying to help.

I just reinstalled all the Verizon bloatware to system/app via the file manager in TWRP. Rebooted the phone, turned on location services logged into my Google account and still no luck.
Only the Apps still in the Play Store.
Getting really annoyed now. I have tried nearly everything. Last shot is to swap out the GooglePlayServices Framework and Play Store APK's with different more upto date ones.
Tried swapping the GoogleServicesFramework.apk and Phonesky.apk with updated versions in system/app.
Rebooted the device and the Play Store just crashes and comes up with an error.
Went into recovery and deleted the associated odex files for both of them and tried again. Now I get a server error in the Play Store.
Restored the device from a backup now. So annoying! I doubt this device will work properly with Google Play outside of the US.

Wipe your data and cache in TWRP. It's a nuisance to put all of your things back the way you had them, but this usually solves odd problems like this.
I give up.
Tried everything and nothing is working. It just simply wont load the main Play Store page. It jumps automatically to Apps. In that I have noticed that there is a Verizon category and everything is in USD$. But that still doesnt explain why its not working properly.
On top of that I have pushed new Phonesky.apk and GoogleServicesFramework.apk. Tried them with both odex files present as well as deleted.
Comes up with either Server Errors or Error Retrieving Information From Server [RH-01].
Does any one with more knowledge like a dev have any idea how to fix this?
2 questions...
Did you have this issue prior to device unlock?
Have you wiped data as reccomended by several other users in this thread?
I know its not a perm solution but i suggest that you create a new google email account and attempt to log into the playstore using these new credentials. This will allow you to test your theory that its related to your uk goog account. If that is the case then reg an account with US google and your problem is solved. I know it inconvenient to have to lose paid apps and what not but if this is truly a location issue then you may not have a choice my friend. Good luck.

Hi.
Thanks for the response.
I personally did not perform the unlock. The seller in the US did, as well as rooting the device. Upon receiving it, I immediately reset the device and logged in with my Google account. Thats when I noticed the problem. Its only been connected to WiFi as I have no Micro SIM yet to try it out on it.
I have wiped Data via TWRP as well as the Cache and Dalvik Cache. I have cleared data and cache in the Application settings for both the Play Store and Google Play Services. Nothing seems to work.
And its a very strange problem. Not one I have encountered before and searching on the internet it seems to be very rare. If I try to access the Books category by clicking on the little Play Store logo in the Play Books app, it switches to the Play Store and then immediately opens a new tab in the browser sending me straight to the website.
Surely as a Global device with unlocked GSM capabilities they should expect a foreigner or even someone on holiday from the States to try and use Google Play in another country.

Just tried it now mate. Created a new Google account with US details. Logged into Google Play and still the same problem. I even went through the Setup Wizard route on the phone just to be sure. It must be detecting my location via my IP address.
OK Guys.
Im getting somewhere now.
I have downloaded Market Enabler APK and set the phone to US Verizon settings. I then used Droid VPN with a US server and now I can access the Play Store properly with all the categories. So its clearly an IP issue. But now the question is how the hell do I get past it?
Just to confirm this. I logged out of my new US Google Account and back into my old UK one. At the same time I kept Market Enabler and Droid VPN active.
It worked fine. I was able to access the Play Store properly with all categories. After this I logged out of Droid VPN and deleted Market Enabler and it still worked! (I attached a screenshot) The last piece was to see if it would function after a reboot.
Turned the phone back on, went into the Play Store and the same problem as before. Only Apps. So its clearly to do with my UK IP address.
But at least I now know. Looks like I will be selling the Droid DNA.
What I don't understand, is that if i'm in the UK with a UK IP address, with a working UK SIM and a UK Google Account why cant I access the UK Google Play store on an unlocked GSM device?!

Well the device is not technically an unlocked GSM device. Your bootloader is unlocked but that has nothing to do with the ability to use it on another carrier. The device was released under verizon as a flagship verizon exclusive with GLOBAL CAPABILITY meaning all applicable consumers would have purchased in the us and be roaming on all other carriers, so technically was never meant to be a GSM only phone. The fact that it works on GSM carriers is because of the radio chip they decided to use. Now because it can pick up these bands doesnt mean that vzw released the device with the intentions of it being used on other carriers. What you need sir is the HTC j butterfly which is a GSM "Carrier UNLOCKED" global version. Anyway I imagine with a little wizardry there is a way around this for you. I cant provide a fix but I'm sure there is a way. I'll ask a couple people and see what their thoughts are.
Thanks for the reply. I understand where your coming from. I know that its a Verizon exclusive, but if anyone was to use it abroad even for a short while why cant they just reroute you to the local Google Play store or better yet base your Play Store off your country details in your account.
I think this is also due to the fact that the phone is ultimately only for US consumers like you said. Even when setting up the phone there is no option for English UK or English AU etc. Just the US.
Oh well. Thanks for everyones help.
Hi guys,
I am a newbie here, so I will just explain it in layman's terms. I am running Android 4.3 on Samsung Galaxy S4 GT-I9500 variant. Its not rooted. I have been using it since I bought it a year ago, with no problems. Since yesterday my Gmail, Play Store, Hangouts are not working and it always give "No Connection" error. I tried clearing up the cache, clearing up the data of Google Play Store and Google Play Services as many other forums and threads have advised, but it's not working. I also tried the factory reset, and it went crazier as I wasn't able to sign in my Google Account in the first place. After trying again and again and again it miraculously signed in, but I still cannot access Google's other apps. I thought somehow the host file can be responsible for it but I don't know how it could be or how to fix it, if it is the culprit. I will be grateful to you guys if you can help out here
Thanks

I have the same issue on a GT-I9505 since tuesday 27/05, reseting the phone makes things work for about 15 minutes, then they all stop working.
I am going to try to figure out if it was something that got installed in the last few days, if all fails I will try a factory reset and later a new ROM.
I bought and first activated my Samsung Note 8 in Saudi Arabia a couple years ago. The phone is still in factory state. It is still going great except since then I moved to Philippines and are now using it in Philippines with Philippine numbers in it.
Unfortunately I found out that Playstore refuses to install some localized apps I would like to use. The problem apps do not even show up in a Playstore search. One such app is GCash. I have to download the apk and install manually. The issue now is that it will not update through the Playstore and every couple weeks I have to re-download the apk and manually update it. A major pain coz i only find out when I need it. Another apk that I had to manually install was Angkas. Luckily something changed with this app and as of recently it updates through the Playstore. I tried but obviously spoofing a location wasnt going to work anyway since I am already in Philippines.
Can this be fixed in phone, Playstore or google account settings that I can quickly change or is this some deep down factory setting for which a fix is a bit more involved? Would maybe a factory reset resolve the issue? Any suggestions or pointing me to a source for resolving the problem would be appreciated.

I couldn't figure out how a VPN would help but I earlier played around with it anyway. Could not get any joy out of it. My Playstore account is already set to Philippines.
I looked up xmlpak, not sure how it really works and I am reluctant to try it. Seems I would need to install the manager and the xmlpak and still no guarantee it would work. Besides there seems to be some issues reported with it. Will keep this as a last resort option.
Would really like to try to solve the issue through the phone setup if possible.
Try AURORA STORE: it's an alternate to Google's Play Store, with an elegant design, using Aurora you can download apps, update existing apps, search for apps, get details about in-app trackers, spoof your location and much more.

Can this be fixed in phone, Playstore or google account settings that I can quickly change or is this some deep down factory setting for which a fix is a bit more involved? Would maybe a factory reset resolve the issue? Any suggestions or pointing me to a source for resolving the problem would be appreciated.
