[Q] From Stock ROM to CyanogenMod - import SMS, contacts etc. - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This might be a rookie question, but here it goes:
1. What is the best way of saving contacts and SMS messages for transferring over to CyanogenMod? I have already saved them in a backup file with Samsung Kies (if that will work?).
2. Is it easy to go back to the stock ROM if I have the desire to do that?
3. With the stock ROM i have now, I tried to uninstall Skype and re-install it again. However, an error 24 popped up in Google Play, and I see that many others have problems with this occurring! I am apparently unable to install Skype again on my phone. How can I fix this still on the stock ROM?
Thanks for all the help,
- Steria

I did a factory reset (stock ROM) and Skype is now working again.
I plan on installing CyanogenMod in the nearest future, but I need to know:
1) How I can import my contacts and messages from stock to CyanogenMod, and
2) Whether it is easy to get the phone back to the stock ROM again if I choose to do so.
Edit: I looked through my SMS's on my phone, and noticed that many of the messages duplicated themselves, and many of my own replies in the conversations are gone (my conversation bubbles in the convos). How come? If anyone can help me with this as well, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

I don't know about text messages, but contacts should be backed up to your Gmail account automatically. If not you can turn that setting on and you wont have to worry about them when formatting.

1) You should use the sync option under your google account settings, just sync your contacts that way and your contacts will follow you into every new android based phone you'll use.
For sms messages - the sms database is located at the following location:
Code:
/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
I admit that I never used it myself, but i'm pretty sure that this is what you're looking for.
2) Easy or not, it's up to you to decide.... use this guide.
3) I have no idea

[Q] Copying Contacts to PC

So i just tried various Roms and I'm very impressed. The roadblock i am facing now is how to copy my contacts from the phone to PC and back again when the ROM isn't sense based. (HTC sync isn't working)
I've tried Android Commander, but i still can't figure out how to get my contacts copied off the phone.
Any Suggestions..
if you are using 2.2 then it have option you can simply import contacts from phone to sdcard . or use MyPhoneExplorer
I had this same problem, but then I figured I could start adding my contacts as google contacts. Now all my contacs gets synced if I should decide to flash a new ROM.

[Q] SE Sync on a custom rom?

Hello everyone!
Recently, I decided to finally root my phone and install a custom rom on it. So far, my experience with slade87's MiniCM has been great... But I have come to miss Sony Ericsson's Sync app. Is there any way to install it on a custom rom?
I have already tried installing the .apk from an unmodded phone, but the program refuses to open; and also checked other posts in this forum. Unfortunately, the only solution seems to be using Google to sync contacts with the phone.
I know, there's nothing wrong with Google Contacts, but I got used to SE Sync already, and in a more practical note, I don't want these contacts to merge with the ones in my Google account.
Thanks in advance.
!
I want this feature too!
If you don't mind you can use My Phone Explorer
My Phone Explorer
and you need the client for your phone when you use it. try it and see

[Q] Best way to retrieve data from a smashed SGS2?

Hey guys,
In a moment of great weakness... i have destroyed my SGS2. This phone has been giving me a lot of grief lately (spontaneous and looping reboots, slow or no data connection, apps not behaving as should - requiring reinstalls, and general buginess)... and the result is a cracked temper and a cracked screen.
All that aside - i have decided not to get the screen repaired, but to get a new phone (no idea what my next handset should be - will gladly take suggestions).
So... Lately I have been backing up a lot of my apps using Titanium - which is great. And I have my contacts set to auto-sync with my gmail account - which it has failed to do since adding a few new contacts yesterday.
So my questions are... what is the best way to retrieve/backup the following data now that the screen is un-usable (but the phone seems to still work ok):
- Contact and Calendar Data
- Apps (or list of apps) that Titanium hasnt backed up
I figure I may need a different method of app backup/restore if i do not wish to root my next phone. There doesn't seem to be an automatic feature in the Play Store which keeps track of which apps I have installed... Is there another way to do it?
Thanks for any help.
Cheers.
I'm almost tempted to suggest Kies as solution for retrieving all organizer data (contacts, calendar, tasks, notes) since it does not require mobile screen interaction.
And there are two ways to save data: sync with Outlook or simple backup.
I'm ready to be flamed...
1. To retrieve your contacts or view them, visit Google.com/contacts and login your hole details. You can also sync them too ur New phone.
Access Google calendar online, to see your calendar info
2. I'm not sure how you can proceed with backing up your new apps since you said phone is working but unusable but the options below will work fine in getting back your apps on your next phone without rooting your new device.
I). Though Google Playstore:
When you log in your Google account on your new phone, open playstore, go to my apps and swipe to the next page too view all.
All, will show all the apps you have ever installed or updated via playstore. You can simply reinstall them one by one.
Note that you will need a lot of data so Wi-Fi is recommended.
ii) via ADB: this will work only if usb debugging was enabled under development option. And you have access to a pc. Root access May also be helpful.
You can use ADB to copy all your presently installed app's apks and even your titanium backup folder or any other folder to your Pc
More info on this will follow based on your response.
iii) MTP mode: this will work if MTP mode and not mass storage mode was previously enabled on your phone.
Simply connect your device via usb to ur pc and start copying your files especially your titanium folder, since your question is about apps.
iv) Titanium backup folder:
If you have a copy of your titanium backup folder, then all is well
Personally, I will galaxy Siii or NoteII if you have the patience.
Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII
Thank for the help guys.
Kies did allow me to retrieve those few un-synced numbers.
And the "my apps" list is a great way to see and reinstall past apps. Not sure if I will be able to root my new phone (Xperia S), so if I cannot get to the Titanium Backup data, this looks like the next best thing.
Thanks again guys.

I'll do that, i promise. Just waiting for someone to aswer my question hehe
I will look in to that and get back to you.
Though, I must say that I am not sure it is a good idea with this ROM.
Did you try logging in to your motoblur account online and look for the contacts?

First, thanks for the great rom...i keep staring my atrix, i'm love with it again hehe
And yes, i tried, but i can only access the images and songs that i had sync. I don't really want to use blur account, i will only activate it, export my contacts, delete the blur account (I saw a thread here teaching to delete the blur account from the phone, i 'll give it a shot) and delete the blur apps again...will this be a problem?
These are my suggestions in the order of most to least desirable (in my opinion):
Before performing any option create a backup.
1) Restore a GB backup and get your contacts that way. If I remember correctly, the contacts can be exported as a .csv file.
2) If you don't have a GB backup, Install a GB fruit cake and do the above.
3) Using ICSROM. This might not even work. I have not even tried to create a Blur account with any of the the new Roms.
a) Reinstall BlurContactsSync.apk and BlurUpdater.apk (see link on ICSROM OP).
b) Use a root level file explorer to edit /system/etc/motorola/com.motorola.blur.service.blur/defaults.xml. Change "master-sdc1.svcmot.com" to "master-blur.svcmot.com". Save edits then exit.
c) Wipe data in recovery, reboot
d) Create Blur account and get your contacts
e) Restore backup.
It might not work because you may need to add an additional apk that I can't think of right now, or beucase it just won't work. You might hve to play with it a little.
I tried to activate the account in this ICSROM, and guess what? you were right! It's not possible: I tried the whole afternoon, instaling a bunch of apks that had moto-something is theirs name. So i installed a GB i had here, got my contacts and exported them as csv.
Thanks again!!

Contacts lost after recovery with Android SDK!

yesterday I had to bring my samsung s6 edge, running on android 5.1.1 (non-rooted), to a samsung service point because the display was broken. I was wondering that they immediately repaired it and whyever made a factory reset. anyway, right before I made a backup with android sdk. afterwards I tried to flash the recovery and it seemed to be working. almost all files, apps and settings were back on the phone but the contacts. even the numbers in the dialling lists, only without names. the funny part is, that some of the names were displayed for e few seconds when I scrolled down the list. but then they immediately changed to numbers without names
I already extracted the backup file, but there is no file with this describtion: /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/contacts2.db
there is also no other backup of the contacts, such as vCard export, google sync, outlook sync, etc.
Is there any way to get my contacts back??
thank you!
