[Q] Samsung Epic 4g Can't update firmware - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having probems with my Sprint Epic 4g. I had to do a manual factory reset and now it crashes. The Firmware Version is: 2.3.6 Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7 Build number: Gingerbread.FC09
Is there a way to bring this phone up to current standards? If so please can someone help me.

Samsung gave up on that device long ago. Luckily the developers here did not. You should look into upgrading via a custom rom like CyanogenMod.
Basic steps go as follows:
Backup everything and save to the PC
Decide if you want to focus more on stability (JB roms) or cutting edge (KK roms)
Move rom zip you chose to the SD card along with the appropriate Google apps package
Install a custom recovery that will work with the kind of rom you want to install
Boot to recovery, make a backup, wipe everything needed, and install the rom and Gapps
*Probably have to install an updated modem depending on the rom you choose*
Reboot and enjoy
You'll find everything you need in the Epic 4g forums here on XDA. Make sure to peruse the Stickies found in the General forum and Developer forums.

[Q] Unroot US Cellular GS2 (SCH-R760)

Hi all, I am very new to Android and rooting and really didn't think it would be as much of a hassle as it is. I apologize in advance if this post is in a wrong location.
My problem is basically that I rooted according to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1531303
and now whenever the phone auto-locks, it reboots. I would be greatful if this could be fixed but I really just want the phone back in working stock order as the US cellular version especially is very unsupported to my knowledge. If it matters, I have done a factory reset since rooting but obviously it is still rooted and the problem persists.
Model: SCH-R760
Android Version: 2.3.6
Broadband Version: S:R760.01 K.FB14
Build #: GINGERBREAD.FB14
Hardware Version: R760.01
I had the same problem. what I did to solve this was Easy as 123...
1. Download USB drivers from Samsung. http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SCH-R760IBAUSC?#
2. Download this Simple Upgrade Tool from Samsung. http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SCH-R760IBAUSC?#
3. Run Simple Upgrade Tool (and Follow the Instructions). This will bring your Phone back to stock 2.3.6 ROM (Unrooted)
note- This Process is assuming that you installed USCC FB14 Kernal Back on your Phone after using CWM Kernal to Gain Root Access... If Not, Make Sure you Follow the Instructions written and POSTED Clearly By (Props To) sfhub http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23276856&postcount=3

[Q] Installing a Jelly Bean ROM on an unrooted ICS Galaxy S2 device

Hi everyone : )
I have an unrooted ICS galaxy s2 device and I wanted to install a Jelly Bean ROM similar to the stock. After a little bit of search I think SuperNexus 2.0 is a suitable one, however I'm open to other recommendations.
I did a little googling but I am still confused, as I am new to this whole process and I fear bricking my device.
My inquiry is: If you could provide me with detailed steps, or point me out to useful links that are targeting my problem and would show me how to carry out this operation, that'd be great : )
Device Info:
Device type: Samsung Galaxy S2
My model number is GT-I9100
I've updated my OS to Android 4.0.3 using Kies.
With kernel version: 3.0.15-I9100JPLPF-CL644992
Build number: IML74LJPLPF
Update:
gatsonw suggestion was right on the spot (Y)
The steps I carried out, for others who had my issue:
1. I rooted my device using Odin to flash Siyah v5 Kernel
2. As a precaution I downloaded Titanium backup and made a full backup
3. Also, I made a nandroid backup of the device as well and copied it to my PC
4. I downloaded SuperNexus ROM from the thread I already pointed out above + google apps for Jelly Bean and stored both of them on my internal SD card
5. I made a wipe/factory reset of the device from recovery mode
6. I installed the SuperNexus ROM then the Google Apps from the internal SD card, also through recovery mode
7. Rebooted my device and enjoyed the new ROM

Don't worry, follow the steps on that thread and you'll be alright.
The only thing you have to do is to root your device and flash CWM, your best choice is flashing siyah kernel (it'll get you rooted & you'll have CWM).
Where can you find siyah v5? gokhanmoral.com

*sigh* You realize when you say "I downloaded this..." without providing what "this" is is pretty useless for us to help you troubleshoot?
What update WERE you on before you started modifying the phone?
What did you download and install?
What modem / baseband version is installed?
Wifi and phone functions are most likely not working because you either downloaded the wrong thing or didn't follow the installation instructions correctly. Typically this would be because of mismatched modem and kernel or there's a patch that needs to be installed.
Usually I would just say install the newest stock firmware (4.4.2) through Odin, but depending on what update the phone had originally and if you plan on continuing to customize your phone, it might be better to stick on an older system as the newer ones really lock down the ATT version.
Long story short: Help us help you. Provide ALL the details about what's going on and we can probably get you fixed up easily enough.
Sry
I337MVLUFNC1_880525_REV06_user_low_ship_MULTI i installed this rom , i was on kit kat 4.4.2. and i installed gummy rom which did not work , then realized i lost the @#$#@% backup here is what it says under about device: model sgh1337m

build number - jdq39.1337mvluamdj

I just realized that samsung posts their factory roms so i am thinking to go back to SGH-I337M RWC I337MVLUFNC1 4.4.2 . which is what I had there before , Do i need to do anything special before i flash it , this file is .zip so what is the best way to flash ? ROM Manager?

How to give a "second life" to my old galaxy s2 ? wipe, kernels, roms, repartition ?

How to give a "second life" to my old galaxy s2 ? wipe, kernels, roms, repartition ?
So i have my old galaxy s2, and i want to completly wipe everything and make it better.
There are a lot of tutorials, but im really confussed. For example there are roms that require android 4.4 or sth like that. I just want to do a fresh install. I also don't get what's going on with kernels.
Right now it runs old android 2.3.3 gingerbread and it's really slow.
I want:
- Some stable, battery friendly android lollipop rom, with all functions working (like usb internet tethering, wifi tethering, camera and so on).
- Only one partition like in new phones (like in galaxy s5)
- kernel ?
- root
- custom recovery
Can anyone give me some step by step instructions, what should i do first ? I would also appreciate if you could send me links to appropriate tutorials.
4.4.4 any custom without GApps then microG it.. with MOAB and Fdroid. All can be found in the forum.. Cheers.

I assume it's on non-rooted stock ROM (android operating system). Backup all data you don't want to loose, format the external SD card (the one you can take out) if you have one (not required, but a good idea to start from scratch) from settings, then do a factory reset from settings.
Then connect the phone to Samsung Kies (download from samsung.com) and update the phone to the latest stock ROM (See which in your country here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/GT-I9100/)
Let me know if you succeed in doing so.
I just installed stock Android 4.1.2 ROM, it's not rooted right now.
Android: 4.1.2
Modem, Baseband version: I9100XXMS2
Kernel: 3.0.31 - 1155032
Build number: JZO54K.I9100XXMS7
What to do next ? I want some good lollipop rom (or kitkat if it's faster), custom recovery and root.
@edit:
Ok, i managed to repartition my device memory and i flashed CyanogenMod 11 (m12) with cwm recovery (compatible with kitkat).

Few questions about changing roms [S6] Please Help

Hi,
Details about phone: Samsung S6 (G920I) I can't remember the exact ROM im on (yes im a noob). However my build number is LMY47X, which when searched by most views comes up with this rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-w/development/rom-aosp-alpha-1-t3107740) Android version 5.1.1 I have TWRP v. 3.0.2-1 as my custom recovery.
So my phone keeps restarting randomly been getting worse over the past few weeks. So I want to try a new ROM (had my current one for like 8 months). So I made a ROM back up just in case through TWRP and backed up all my user data through Titanium and exported both of it onto my PC.
I found a ROM I want to use "XtreStoLite" ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...xtrestolite-deodexed-mod-edition-1-0-t3094423) but I have a few questions before I try to install it.
First of will this work fine for the current setup I have?
Since I'm on 5.1.1 and they have a ROM version for 6.0.1 will I be able to install this version or do I have to use the 5.1.1 version? I've tried updating to 6.0.1 on my current ROM but my provider won't let me update OTA. Only way is to remove root and return it back to the stock ROM which I don't really want to do if I can avoid it.
Please help, any information will be greatly appreciated, feel free to ask any questions.

This ROM will work for your device. Based on what I read in the OP's post on how to install this ROM there are two prerequisites. You will need to use Odin to flash a Marshmallow bootloader and a Marshmallow modem for this ROM to work. This is an excerpt from the ROM's OP:
How-to Install:
Install Marshmallow bootloader & modem and install custom recovery:
- Install the correct MM bootloader & modem for your model with Odin (see post #5 of this thread)
- Make sure that you have an working TWRP custom recovery installed.
If you follow the OP's instructions you should not have any problems. Make sure you read, read and read. The OP has given an excellent guide. Post #5 in this thread has the download links for the Marshmallow bootloader and modem and instructions on what slot to put the files in using Odin. Good luck and happy flashing.
Also, if you wanted to stick with a Lollipop ROM the OP still has links to his Lollipop ROM's available.
