Next Phone? - Huawei Ascend Mate 2

We all love the Mate 2 for its screen size and great battery life. While the phone is a decent performer, it certainly isn't in the same ballpark as a SD800+ device. And the screen, while decent at 241 DPI, pales in comparison to the 1080P devices we've been seeing for a while now, and the 2K screens we're starting to see more prevalently.
I was wondering what fellow AM2 owners were considering for their next device. To me, the main devices that appeal to us craving a large screen powerhouse are the Nexus 6, Note 4, Vibe Z2 Pro and the Mate7 (assuming it ever becomes available). Am I missing any? All these devices have their advantages and disadvantages. Are you considering any? Have you ruled any out? Why or why not?

Well as a lint time Samsung user I switched to this for three reasons. Size, price and to get away from Sprint. You will never find a factory unlocked Note 4 for $299. I was hoping for some sort of development with this device but that seems like it's never going to happen so I'm a little disappointed there. Whether or not we see a Lollipop update or at least a 4.4.4 KK update will determine how much longer I actually use this. My next device will probably be a OnePlus. At least the CM team are constantly working on updates.

I'd like to go for a used Nexus 6.
Pure Android (no silly file system, so things will WORK), developers (custom ROMs), etc. I know I'll miss the battery life, but I that'll be it.

Unless my Mate2 dies, I don't see any "need" to replace it, for around 18-24 months.
Heck, I kept my Note1 for 22 months before replacing it with the Mate2, only because the
OLED screen was starting to show screen burn in.

I don't think I can replace my mate2, battery life is too good. I was looking forward to the Nexus6, but $650 is almost as expensive as an iPhone. A Oneplus for $350 will have to do for me. I'm done paying $600+ for a phone that costs about $200 to make it
Sent from my MT2L03

The Mate 2 as I have it set up, pretty much does everything I need it to do, and does it well. I'm thinking about the Nexus 6, but just because it would be nice to have a phone that gets the latest cutting edge updates to play with. If more development started on the Mate 2 though, I'd cancel those thoughts.

If it doesnt beat battery life of mate 2... i wont get it. I am thinking of getting a tablet and infinite tethering with my mate.. and i think it could probably handle it for a looonh time.

Nexus 10 vs Note 10.1 (Poll and Opinions)

Hi, I am looking for a highen tablet and the two that are considered the "best" are the Google Nexus 10 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. 60% of the time that I will be using this tablet is going to be for android app development and quick reference, ie googling a question. The other 40% is mostly going to be used for school and sometimes games . Any ideas which one I should get? Thanks.

Unless you really need the wacom tablet features, for you I'd say the Nexus 10 without any hesitation. The Nexus line has developers as a target audience, and it'll be faster to get Android updates. As far as 10" tablets go, there simply is no better option for development. The higher resolution screen and A15 processor also make it more future proof than the Note 10.1.

As long as you posted it in the n10 forum all the comments will say buy n10 because they already prefered it over other devices, same will happen when you post in the note forum , so the best way to know is to try both by yourself and decide, both are the best in market btw so don't go for anything other than them

I can't really tell you which is better because both are "good" tablets. Neither is great in my opinion, though for me, I preferred the nexus 10 over the note 10.1 (and I own a note phone).
Reasons: Nexus 10 resolution is fantastic but the contrast compared to a superAMOLED screen is pittiful. Nexus 10 displays blacks like greys. Still, the resolution makes up for it because even with my eyeball one inch from the screen, I cannot see a pixel.
Another negative that nexus is probably not so good for developing is 4.2.1. At least half my apps crash on the nexus, or are simply not optimized for the crazy high resolution. While developing for 4.2.1 would be smart, keep in mind that most devices are still on ICS or gingerbread still. When I go to an app in the market half of the 1 star reviews are from people saying it crashes on xxx device running 4.0/2.3 android.
So pick you poison. Luckily the note 10.1 can be found on "deals" for less than the $500+ nexus 10.

I pretty agree with this, but my apps don't crash on 4.2.1, none, and nexus 10 costs 400$ and 500$, not only 500$.
I would go for the nexus 10. Better screen, better support, fast updates, and no stupid Samsung UI. Oh and the nexus has one of the newest exynos processors.

The "pure Google" thing is getting funny. What could possibly be better about having less features rather than more? Back in the days of 512K of RAM when SoCs were slow and overlays crude, poor performance drove people to AOSP/AOKP and de-bloated custom ROMs. That's not really the case anymore. The h/w is now more capable than the UI and apps running on it.
I played with a friend’s N10 over the holidays and, feature wise, it was a barren wasteland compared to the Note. The phone UI on a 10" tablet is bizarre. Similarly he was amazed at what the Note could do that his N10 couldn't. The N10 has a faster SoC than the Note but when you factor in the PPI it's pushing and that memory bandwidth is hard-partitioned to support the display it's certainly not any faster. And with app incompatibility because of the resolution some apps behave poorly or don’t work at all.
The Note has IO accessories available to match the N10's ports, takes up to a 64GB exFAT SD card for expansion, has an IR port, larger speakers than the N10, and gets significantly better battery life and charges 1/3 faster. It also doesn't have light bleed. Without question the N10 will get updates ten times faster than the Note. But so what, it'll still do 1/3 of the things the Note can do right now. It'll just be Google's barren OS with updates. I've disabled Google Now because I don't use any of their native apps that it depends on to harvest data and for some reason it thinks I work at a McDonalds because I stop at one frequently. As a value-priced consumption device with a great display the N10's a solid choice. For people interested in creating and managing content the Note's a better choice. Its 147PPI display is fine for pics and videos and doesn't require upscaling like the N10's display does. It's obviously not as good for text and computer generated content like the UI and that's a compromise you have to make to get the additional features. So for people looking for something beyond consumption I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the Note. It's already sold 5MM units and I'd be surprised based on its limited distribution if the N10's sold 1MM.
OP, if the things in this video mean anything to you consider the Note. If all you care about is consumption and the display the N10's a better choice.

Just like stock doesnt work for you, Touchwiz simply doesnt work for others. Some dont like it because its ugly, some dont like it because it introduces compatibility problems with apps (a really big concern for this post considering OP is a dev), some dont like them because they slow down the device (more so with Motorola's skins). The only advantage I see with Touchwiz over stock is the multiwindow stuff, and then its nothing that others, be it Google themselves or devs here, couldn't replicate.

It also has S-Pen features, but as you said, it really goes both ways.
Also, it's not a question of "can" they do it. It's more of a question of "will" they do it. Just because Google or some dev "can" replicate it, doesn't mean it'll come to the N10.
I'm not siding with either one here, but they both have their merits and faults.
As for app development, I'd think the N10 is a better choice for you mainly because it'll be up to date software-wise for a long long while and you can continue to develop apps.

You're absolutely right - it's a matter of individual choice. With h/w having reached the state it has performance increases are measured in milliseconds. For people that are more interested in benchmarks and picking up 1/10 of a second in screen transitions than actually getting stuff done a Nexus device is an excellent choice. By the time you add (if they exist) non-integrated third party apps from developers ranging from excellent to sketchy to replicate the Note's features you have as much (if not more) bloat on it and the apps don't work as well together. Can you wireless transmit content from your N10 to any HDMI-equipped output device? By the time Miracast reaches critical mass the N10 III will be out. Someone above mentioned Nexus as a developers platform. Those days are gone too. With value-based starting prices for the N4/N7/N10 of $299/$199/$399 respectively and a decidedly lower focus on build quality Nexus is now a mainstream consumer product with its lead feature being price/value. The GN which was a revered device on XDA only sold 750K copies. That sort of says something about what's really important to making a device commercially successful and being “pure” and getting “fast updates” doesn’t seem to be it.

The GN was banned at least once in the US from my knowledge, and given the short lifespan of smartphones, it's only natural that the GN was already superseded by the imminent S3.

Nexus 10 16GB is $444 with shipping & tax, Nexus 10 32GB is $553 with shipping and tax.
I got mine on a "deal" from staples because I had a $10 off coupon and shipping was free. After tax it was still $533. Google charges tax to every state in USA as far as I know, except the states without a sales tax. New Hampshire?
As for apps crashing... HDhomerun 2 crashes constantly, chrome has completely locked up my device, and other apps just randomly force close. I've only had the device for 2 days and its running completely stock. I know that over time things will crash less so i'm not complaining a whole lot. But its quite annoying.

It was banned very late in its lifecycle when sales were already down to a trickle because better spec'd devices had been out for a while. The point that I was making is that the GN was available at subsidized prices similar to other phones with overlays from the U.S. carriers. Its "pureness" and "fast updates" didn't sway mainstream consumers for it to have sold so poorly during its peak selling period. Outside of XDA, people like overlays because they make devices easier to use which is why the OEMs offer them.
Here's an article talking about it...
Google just can't catch a break with its Nexus phones. While the "pure Google" experience of the company's Nexus phones tends to generate fanatical loyalty from extreme Android frothers, it seems to appeal to almost no one else. In a federal court today, a Samsung lawyer said the sales of its latest Galaxy Nexus phone were "so miniscule" that it isn't a threat to anyone. Samsung's lawyers said the company took in about $250 million from the Galaxy Nexus during the first two quarters [where revenue is in the billions] it was on sale. That isn't nothing, but it's far short of a hit. Available on Verizon, Sprint, and in an unlocked model for T-Mobile and AT&T, the Nexus managed to sell at about the level of T-Mobile's Galaxy S 4G when it had its two best quarters. It fell far short of a hit like Sprint's Epic 4G or Verizon's Fascinate, according to court documents from Samsung's big California patent case against Apple.

I thought it was much earlier, but regardless, you're right in that fast updates and pureness don't sell. But I sincerely doubt that hardware itself is also what makes sales soar. Yeah, the S3 sale is simply outstanding, but I'm sure the majority of S3 owners only bought the S3 because it's something new (among the iPhones) and because they "heard" from nearly everywhere that it's a smartphone that can compete well against the iPhone. And yes, the hardware helps with that definitely, but the majority don't care if it has an Exynons 4412 SoC inside clocked at 1.4 gHz.
What I consider as the best reason for poor Nexus sales is that Google just sucks at advertising. I never saw once in my life a billboard or a TV commercial about the Galaxy Nexus on it. I only knew about it because I like tech and try to keep up with what's new. I see Google doing a better job with the recent Nexus line though, but now that Samsung has gained so much popularity with its own flagship line, people are going to keep their eyes on any new pure Samsung products (the S4 and Note III).
So how does this relate to the OP - it really doesn't .
I will have to agree that anything in the Nexus line is a better developer platform. Yes, it's commercialized as an average consumer product, but the long support from Google will give it the advantage in development because you can continue to develop apps without having to worry about breaking compatibility in newer devices. Also, you won't have to deal with ROM ports that may work but also may also not work completely.
Google Nexus 10 or Note 10
I think that is one hard question to ask? I think Galaxy Note 10 is really awesome phablet, i mean, tablet if you really like writing or drawing stuff on the go, but the size can be the problem if you want to carry it to public area.
So maybe you should pick up Note 5.5-inch instead.
Google Nexus 10 is also one great device, especially with its eye-pleasing screen and fast performance. I also like when Google Earth is run on this device.
Yeah, it's hard question.
Hi all, thank you for your responses. My next question is: I been going to stores looking for the tablets on display, but no luck for finding a Nexus 10. Does it feel cheap? Also from going to the stores, I really like the feature on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 that has the navigation controls on the bottom left and the toggles/notifications menu on the right, but the nexus has only the navigation controls in the center. Is it bothersome or does it feel normal to use. Note: I have been using an iPhone and iPad for regular use/programming, and I only had contact with an android device at the stores and using the strictly developer use only android tablets at school, they are all 7-inch tablets, and you get in a lot of trouble if you play with them. Thank you, again.
First thing you'll notice is the screen on the N10 is miles better than the Note 10.1. When the Note gets a SAMOLED I'm getting one. Until then the N10 is the better machine. Plus the faster CPU, and they're both Samsung, why would anybody choose a Note 10.1 instead? Only the stylus. So make that your pivot question. Do you need a stylus or not.

The Nexus certainly does not feel cheap. The plastic has an almost rubbery feel, not at all cold like metallic tablets and not rigid or creaky like most other Android tablets. IMO its one of the best feeling tablets out there.
The buttons on left, notifications on right are how things were done on Android tablets from 3.0 through 4.1. The new layout doesn't quite feel as natural in landscape, but it was done in the name of consistency with phones and probably is the right move for the future. While Samsung might stick with the traditional layout, there's also a very good chance that in a future firmware update the Note 10.1 could adopt the N10's button layout. I wouldn't say its bad, far from it. The old layout is just a little more comfortable, since if you're holding your tablet with both hands you dont have to let go on one to do something (home/back/etc.).

Apologies for typical "should I buy" thread

Sorry I know if everyone asked these general questions about what to buy the forums would be flooded. Hopefully posting in the general section I'm not getting in the way of any important development threads or anything. I wouldn't ask if I weren't really struggling with some indecision here.
I'm a Verizon customer, still have unlimited. Using a Droid Bionic with Carbon Rom. I'm planning to buy at full retail price to leave my data plan in tact.
LG wasn't really even on my radar. HTC One was originally what caught my eye for the styling and great reviews, then the new wave of Droids came out, and now the G2. I think I'm fairly decided in terms of currently available devices and don't need help there, I would get the G2 if it came down to what's on store shelves right now. I've seen comments on the HTC One camera ranging from amazing to garbage, and not sure I would like Blinkfeed. The One speakers would be nice but can't say I really need internal audio from my phone that much. Doesn't sound like the Droid Maxx battery is really thrilling anyone, plus with upgrading at full retail price it kinda isn't all that interesting to jump from one Moto Droid to another, it'll just feel like a differently shaped Bionic. Moto X seems interesting everyone keeps saying it's the best all around form factor and the most refined that an Android device has ever felt, but I think I'm ready for a bigger screen and battery.
I'm more a bit hesitant that I'll get the G2 and then the Nexus 5 or Note 3 is going to be amazing. Although I'm well aware of the crop of Nexus 5 rumors, apparently not having Verizon's LTE band (then counteracted by a newer rumor saying there may have been an FCC filing for a separate Verizon LG device that wasn't the G2 and could be their variant of the Nexus 5). Plus a rumored smaller battery for the Nexus compared to the G2 which would lower my interest in it. Note 3... I'm not really dying to own my first Samsung but it seems it might outdo the G2 in a few ways, more Ram, SD card slot, etc. Obviously anything compared to the Bionic I have will seem nice, 32GB (or the 20-whatever that's actually available after system install) on the G2 will be plenty, I am used to working with the 16gb I have on my Bionic and am used to having to send stuff to my PC harddrive if my phone gets too full.
I've owned LG in my cell phone history, had an LG Dare and then an Ally for my first Android phone. Their hardware is alright but if I recall correctly they are pretty iffy about timely updates and then just stop supporting devices once they hit a certain age. But then Motorola pulled the same stunt during my Bionic ownership and most of you will know about how long it took Bionic to get system updates. I don't think I ever really saw myself going back to LG as I've felt the same indifference towards them as the rest of the community for a while now, although it kinda says something about them that they're still good enough to keep getting contracted for the Nexus devices. And then this G2 landed on my radar out of nowhere.
G2 camera sounds great with a few reviews sprinkled in that suddenly didn't think it was all that amazing, but I take pictures like crazy, camera is important, I think I may even sell my Sony Nex 3 full size camera as a way to help pay for a phone upgrade, the big camera just sits here and collects dust when I can have a camera in my pocket all day in a phone.
Important aspects to me, battery life (sick of charging my Bionic constantly, I think my extended battery is wearing out because I can just watch the percentage drop like a rock as I use it), quality display would be nice after settling for the Bionic with it's blah pentile screen, camera as I mentioned above, other than that I browse, text message, need Tethering, and use Pandora in my car. And I do care about developer support, I like messing with Roms, but if the factory Rom is decent once you get it set up, I can live with not having as large of a dev community as S4 might have or whatever. So yeah with that said it seems like a no brainer saying display-battery-camera, G2 sounds to be the best at all of that right now, I'm just worried about what else is coming out this holiday season. I know the Nexus announcement is rumored for next month but I just hate to wait just to find out it's not coming to Verizon or is definitely going to have some lame 2300mah battery. You know how it is when you're ready to upgrade...
-I suppose we'd all be guessing, but how good are people feeling about the G2 getting a KitKat update in a reasonable time window? This is the LG flagship so I would hope for good support, but the LG skin and addons are so overwhelming and heavily skinned devices always take longer to get their updates out. I'd be thrilled to get this phone but that would quickly turn to disappointment if we're waiting for 4.4 longer than anyone else.
-How is developer support looking? Have any big names pledged to add the G2 to their supported devices? I really like Carbon Rom on Bionic. I suppose it's a good sign that root and loki happened right away but so far Rom releases, especially for VZW, looks slow.
-Speaking of ROMs, do we have any idea if any of the stock stuff like knock-on etc will ever be able to be pulled and applied to a custom ROM, or is it pretty much a guarantee that if you switch to anything but stock you're going to be sacrificing a lot of the factory features?
-I noticed the G2 doesn't even come up on the Top Devices window at the first XDA forum portal, is that a bad sign for community interest in the device? HTC One, Note 3, etc all show up as the top devices on XDA right now. Is there a community behind this device or not really? Does everyone dig the specs but shy away from LG with their heavy skin?
-It WiFi tethering working with the current root exploit? I use my Bionic as my home internet access, on the stock ROM it seems like FoxFi will stop working after a couple of days like it's detecting that I'm tethering, on Carbon ROM I can tether for gig after gig of data and no issue.
-I've seen more than one person gripe about thermal throttling and the G2 starting to run like utter garbage in certain conditions. That would certainly suck to spend 600 on. Is this widespread?
I don't think I'd regret buying it immediately but I see the potential that only a few weeks into ownership the "oh crap why did I go with LG" feeling will start.
For the awesome specs...yes. Its a great deal for what you get. I don't know if tethering is working yet but I do know pda net works. Top be honest with my wife and I we were concerned about going share everything but I got a music unlimited service for 50 a year and downloaded everything instead of streaming. We went from using 6+ gb a month to under 2. And almost all the music is ultra high quality which works perfect with the 24 bit DAC. I stopped using Pandora because of this...I can skip all I want no commercials and choose weekday I want. I am very happy with the lg UI MINUS the giant size. So fast there had been a fantastic dev community modding the stock rom. Coming from a GNex I am ecstatic to get TWRP already. I wouldn't be too sure that anything coming out from Samsung will be crackle since the S4 is locked down now. Battery is about 9-10 hours of straight screen and 24+ with normal usage including hours on and off of heavy use. The only thing I don't like is the weak out of the box speaker but they have already modded ATT gain to make it better. The Btooth audio and head phone quality makes for this Times a million. I don't see anything else coming close unless you are Andre the Giant and like the phablet Note type. The one is bigger with a smaller washed out color LCD. The speakers rock but it's not worth the lack of general power. Grey a quick window case it's s fantastic.

Wow. There's about 5 minutes I can't get back.
Nexus5 will most likely never hit Verizon.
Big name devs? This phone is like a week old. Time will tell.
Wi-Fi tethering not currently working.
Buy it. If you don't like it inside of 14 days, return it. By that time, news of the nexus 5 should be out.
Thank you Devs. From my LG G2.
Wifi tether wasn't working on the S4 or One, I just had both phones on Sprint and T-Mobile with various roms and kernels. The only other phone I considered was the Note 3 but I can't stand the home button, would have liked the extra real estate but the G2 is still manageable for me to use one handed and a stylus would have been wasted on me.
This phone doesn't even need roms tbh.
I'd buy this phone all over again. No other phone feels like this one a atm.
LG G2
I was following every phone to come down the pipe for the last six months or more. I had an LG Nitro HD for my last phone and my first was the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. The nitro was terrible. The only time that phone ran right was on stock gingerbread. The development was fairly slow and the community small because it was att only and wasn't popular at that. I was about as put off by LG as they come.
Two days ago, I bought the G2, and I absolutely love it. The battery life really is phenomenal. I say this because it had kept up with my initial high usage love for a new phone. I plugged in last night with 34% left after having almost six hours of screen on time at 80% brightness. The note 3 might be great, but then again it might not. Only 100mah larger battery with a .5in larger screen concerns me a bit. The processor is already insane in the G2 so that will likely not make a difference for a bit. The ram shouldn't be an issue for at least an upgrade cycle at minimum.
Honestly, the biggest difference between this and the nexus is battery and screen. Nexus is 5 in and only had 2300mah so unless Kit Kat has major battery improvements that phone was no longer a option for me. The tipping point for this phone over the moto x in my case? Development and community. This phone already has a larger forum Than the moto x. That's not the only determinant but helps significantly. Go check the nitro forum, this phone is already almost as large... this phone had root on day one I think it was and boot loader bypass within a week of launch. And a Rom 2days later. It may not be as fast some devices but that is still damn fast. Will this be a great dev phone? Too early to tell but it looks promising. And with the nexus being nearly identical hardware wise, that could help too.
Hope that helps.

Nexus 10 vs Nexus 9

I was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the Nexus 9? And if I would be worth selling the Nexus 10 and jumping ship out wait until 5.0 lollipop is out and then see how out tablets hold their own.

Wait for the update. It's said to have improved performance on nexus devices.

I'm gonna wait for the update on mine. I really hope it improved the tablets performance and battery life. Because my batteries starting to suck. If it doesn't really make a difference i may sell mine but i probably won't get the nexus 9. I'm waiting to see how the xperia z4 tab turns out because the z3 compact like like a beast though i want something bigger.

I'm going to wait and see what "L" brings to the N10. Still a very good device in my opinion.
Having Similar thoughts!
The specs bump up is not that signficant for an 'upgrade' to N9. I would prefer to hold on the nexus 10 unless there is a very good trade in offer.
Yeah I think I'll wait then. I was so disappointed with the kitkat update as it seemed to of made my tablets performance rubbish. When I had it, it was quick, snappy and a dream then the dreaded update and went down hill from there. I hope the 'L' update sorts that. But I can be doing with the wait haha so jealous of the guys with there nexus 4/5 haha.
I love my N10 and don't really have any issues with it. Like many, I use a custom ROM because it seems to get faster response to bug fixes and has more customizations. At first there were only a few ROMs and now there are many of them to choose. If I were to consider an upgrade, it would be to for possibly a bigger unit such as a 12" or 14" - even though I like the 10".
Already ordered Nexus 9. 10's battery is getting weak, screen has the yellow splotch and keeps getting buggier. I may keep the 10 for use around the house, but it won't stay as my daily user.
I think the nexus 9 looks nice, but I'm keeping my 10.
While I do like 4:3 aspect ratio more thatn 16:9, since I do mostly reading on the tablet, I don't see any big improvement on the Nexus 9, so I'm going to keep my N10 for a while.

'Not significant'?? Well i guess it depends in what area. The screen resolution is similar, but the screen cant possibly be anything other than far better. Its got more up to date Wifi, much much faster RAM and more of it, a CPU thats at least 5x faster in raw terms and a GPU thats an order of magnitude faster at least.
And all those specs on the N9 weren't necessary if Lollipop would truly bring an enormous performance update [emoji6]
I think we (the N10) can also forget the "coloring notification bar" like my N5 has with apps which have Material Design (like Gmail: red; Documents: blue; etc), because we didn't have transcluent not bar either with KitKat.
I'm intersted in seeing how well is N10 going to perform with 5.0, but I'm decided on getting the Nexus 9 anyway - I think the 4:3 9" device is a good compromise for using one device at home and outdoors or at university rather than having two separate devices for each task (I currently go to uni with N10 and use N7 at home due to its weight and portability)

So it won't be transparent in lollipop either? That's sad and just seems like a lazy decision. I highly doubt that it lowers performance. Almost every custom rom has it as translucent and I haven't seen any performance drops on there

I'm still very much sitting on the fence on this one. I use my N10 almost exclusively in portrait mode and find it really heavy and awkward to hold. Plus web browsing (and even PDF editing on large PDF's) on the N10 can still be a sluggish experience. The N9's 4:3 aspect ratio, ~180g weight saving and ultrafast chip would be really helpful in countering my main gripes with the N10.
The initial reviews though don't sound hugely promising - especially about the poor battery life (4-5 hours) and flimsy back cover...
Hm...
Quite a few big reviewers have slated the N9 saying it's simply not worth the price tag.

Most of them have reviewed it before am 800 mb ota came out to fix any issues. They should've waited and Google should've not let them review until the ota was out. Wait for android authority's review they said they're gonna do it after spending a good amount of time with it. Also it's releasing at the same price point as nexus 10 and 20 dollars cheaper than nexus 10 for 32 GB version. So it's not really bad pricing. People just think that because of the nexus 7 being so cheap. Anyways you pretty much get an upgraded processor, upgraded GPU (which is very much needed for nexus 10) boom sound speakers (though the nexus 10 front speakers are pretty decent themselves) more compact device with only 1 inch smaller screen, much lighter and easier to hold. Slight camera upgrade as well. And probably a better screen even though the resolutions are the same. It's not that much of an upgrade over the nexus 10 but it's an update definitely. I myself am sticking with my nexus 10 since for my needs as a media device and some school stuff it's perfectly capable. Maybe I'll upgrade next year but after the nexus 10 I don't think I'll be getting a tablet anymore. More likely I'll get a touch laptop or one of those two in ones.

Well the N10 is both moving much more pixels (1600 x 2560) and the density is higher as well (300 ppi vs 288 ppi).

So, who's excited? What phone are you coming from? What are your thoughts?

It seems like news surrounding this device is really, really slow. What's going on?
I've been a long-time Note user and have recently become disenchanted with the Note line. Although I am an S-Pen addict, I've always been more attracted to phones that have something really unique about them ... hence, my interest in the Phab 2 Pro. I had the LG Optimus 3D and loved the 3D features and screen, and the raw power of the phone, but the trend died out and LG stopped updating it.
Anyway, I'm not just interested in the Phab 2 Pro, I'm totally obsessed with it. Are there any other people out there who are as excited about this phone as I am?
I'm not a developer, so I'm going at this phone from a pure consumer vantage point. But I want to drum up some excitement or something ...
So what is your level of interest? Curious? Planning on developing for it? Planning on waiting in line on Day One?
I plan to be FIRST in line on Day One.
You aren't the only one. I check Google everyday...like everyday twice a day..I can't wait I've already set the money aside for it lol I want it so bad I wanted to pre-order it on August 1 just so as soon as bestbuy opens I can just walk in and grab it. Like best buy opens at 10 I'm trying to have it and be in my car by 10:10 lol

I'm going to get one Launch day! I am amazed, very little news on this device! I too have been trawling for updates, and not much to be found!
Definitely can't wait been interested in this phone since I heard the announcement, will be putting down my nexus 6 but will still be used for VR fun. I'm also interested in Project Ara from Google but not sure if AR will be part of modular phones. My main reason for getting this phone is a bigger screen than my nexus 6 (I'm a gamer) and AR obviously. On a side note Intel is coming out with a VR & AR combo headset next year no smartphone or PC required. You can also use your naked hands to interact in the VR world.
I will am also be coming from a Nexus 6 once the Phab 2 Pro comes out. Sure would be nice for a definitive release date to be set though.
Announcement will be very soon I'm assuming, here's a video posted today, it's from a Greek website I had to use Google Translate

Note 4, here. I'm anxiously awaiting this, LG V20, and to see any other announcements. I WANT this size with the high resolution. Every other huge phone has been low end garbage. I'm a huge guy, I like the size. The camera/Tango setup looks nice, too. I can actually use it
I am also checking everyday. Do you have any idea if it will be released in UK or Ireland ?
Bad news - Delays!
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Leno...cial-Project-Tango-phone-gets-delayed_id85312
I would be SUPER excited if I had even a bit of hope that Verizon will carry this phone. I doubt it, and I'm stuck in a rural area with only VZW or USCellular as my options. I had a Nexus 6, bought a used 6P (love it!) on Swappa, and I'm extremely disappointed that the next "large" Nexus or Pixel is only 5.5"! Ugh. Maybe the V20 once it's rooted...
I'm definitely getting this phone when it eventually goes on sale. The best source of information I've been able to find for updates about the phone is twitter. From everything I've read so far, it may be out by late October or sometime in November. #Phab2Pro #WaitingNeverStops
This official looking marketing video would seem to confirm a November 2016 release.
Which marketing video would that be? I have seen quite a few, though none that hint at a date.

I'll be honest, it's pretty disappointing to see that so many corners were cut on the supposed flagship Google "Tango" device.
Snapdragon 652 - This processor is on par with last gen technology. It's not bad, but it's not exactly great either. That being said, don't expect it to match the iPhone 7, LG V20, or Note 7 in terms of performance.
Micro USB - Not sure what they were thinking here either. Most if not all new devices are now USB-C, yet here is a device that's implementing a last gen hardware feature. They really couldn't afford to increase the price by a couple dollars to implement a USB-C port?
LCD Screen - And the biggest disappointment of all is the lack of an AMOLED display. Nothing says "cheap Chinese phone" more than the lack of an AMOLED, which is extremely sad given that even the low end Galaxy and LG devices now sport AMOLED screens. (Hell, even Pixel has an AMOLED.)
I don't mind compromising on the first two points, but the LCD screen was a terrible decision, especially for a device labeled as "professional".
As much as I'd love to support Tango, I'm afraid this device simply cannot compete with the current flagship offerings. The gimmick is also doesn't carry enough weight to buy into this brand only to suffer with a sub-par display and Lenovo's questionable update practice.
I really hope Tango succeeds so that something more premium is made, but thus far it's looking pretty bleak.

I agree that the micro-usb is outdated. But, at least i'm still able to use all my old charging cables.
Anyhow, I just received the Phab2 (base), and while this model has a different screen supposedly, it is very clear and bright. moreso than i was expecting. if the low end version is this good, the pro must be pretty swell.

So where are you using this phone and on what service? I'm interested in the phab 2 pro but have never used a phone not supported by any carriers and they will never support a larger than 6 inch phone. It seems that this should work for at&t but I'm a little surprised people don't talk about the lack of carrier support a little more. I wonder if that is why it got delayed. Lowes and Best Buy have to figure out how to sell unsupported phones to people who have never bought one.

as of now, i switched from a t-mobile(metro pcs) phone to this and am on 4g only in the US, Florida specifically. I will hopefully be going to at&t next week, assuming i have time. regardless, 4g has been enough for the time being, but i don't like paying for LTE and not getting it.
my guess would be that upon release, all models will become either an AT&T exclusive or at least be advertised by AT&T, but i still can't even confirm the LTE bands this phone uses. Lenovo tech support says 1900, 1700 and 700, but he had googled it, as they don't have spec data yet, apparently.

Should i take my Nexus 9 back for a refund or a repair?

I got my Nexus 9 32gb lte a few months ago from a local retailer (JBHIFI) and there has been a few issues that have since popped up and i'm looking for advice on what i should do. I should start out by saying that it was a floor model with literally nothing else besides the tablet. No charger, no box, no Htc manuals or warranty cards (i know what they look like thanks to my Htc one x and Htc one M9) but at half the retail price i thought it was a good deal. The screen looked good with very little backlight bleeding ( only at the top and bottom and you can't really tell if you're not looking for it) and the housing looked to be in good shape as well but after a few months the issues started to pop up. The first issue i noticed was the tablet gets pretty hot to the point where i can't touch it, I'm not sure if it's a nougat issue but i doubt it, it's specifically hot around the top half and there's a crunching sound when i press down around the top 1/4 of the tablet which leads me to believe the copper shield is having issues. Second issue is the battery life has also taken a pretty big hit, i used to be able to get 6+ hours sot (managed 7 hours once) and now I'm barely able to get 4 hours sot with it frequently only getting about 3 1/2 hours sot before i have to charge it. Third issue is the air bubbles in the corners of the screen. I've got 3 separate bubbles along the top of my nexus 9, one in the top left and one in the top right corner and a small strip very close to the right corner air bubble. I know i have consumer laws on my side in case JBHIFI decide to do nothing to help me and i could force the issue if i wanted to. I'd like to get it fixed but these issues are making me look at other options like a new tablet (not much to choose from though). Any advice would be a great help.
Cheers Mrbtree98
My advice (having one of the finicky ones for nearly 2 years) is to return it. I don't think mine has any actual hardware issues but requires frequent wipes (at least every 8-12 weeks) to avoid lag, freezes, and reboots. The back of the tab-near camera-does get hot especially when using Chrome but the bubble issue would concern me.

Thanks for your reply. I went back to the store, spoke with the manager and they'll be taking it back with a full refund in the new year because of a massive hardware fault in his opinion. He asked if I could come back after the Christmas/Boxing Day madness which is fine with me. Thank you again for making up my mind on this.
I wish I could help with a suggestion for another tablet. The reason I still have mine is because I've found nothing better. I actually love the form factor, and when it's working well, the display is remarkable.

I loved my Nexus 9 when i got it but these issues have put a serious dampener on my love with the nexus line, Especially when I'm coming from the Nexus 7 2012 and the 2013 (2012 died from either a mobo failure or a nand failure but the thing served me and later my dad well. The 2013 was easily my best tablet experience to date and still is). Like you said the screen is amazing (minus the bubble issue) and i love the form factor, it's just a shame that google went with the "lets price everything higher" approach which screwed over Aussies with $1000+ Pixels. (128gb Pixel XL comes in at almost $1500) I'll be keeping an eye out on CES and MWC to see what comes out on the tablet scene but i'm hoping for a Galaxy Tab S3 to get announced or for Lenovo to come out with something amazing as they're really the only players in the Australian market outside of windows 2 in 1's from Asus, Hp, etc, Ipads and the Surface lineup.

Likewise, (and I think most people who use the N9 share this opinion)
When it works, its great. Sadly.....it doesn't always work great, biggest reason for this is that its a 64-bit android with only 2 gigs of memory. thus, your memory is 90% of the time near full capacity.
(Which is why I find my OnePlus 3 for instance with its 6gb of memory a godsend. It might be overkill but atleast I never ever have issues apps force closing etc due to no more memory available)

My first nexus was the Nexus 5, after which I bought the N9. The N5 was a remarkable phone....the N9 also managed to kill my love for the nexus line.
Pixel kosts around € 950,- for the 32gb version and around € 1175,- for the 128gb version in Europa). Which translates to around 1000~ 1250 dollars. Still not as bad as 1500 dollars but I will never ever in my life lay down that much money for just a phone.
Now, as far as recommended tablets go. I cannot recommend Samsung (We have a Tab Pro here aswell), simple verdict on that. Its slow, sluggish, comes with far too many un-installable system junk apps and Samsung can F*** right off with their locked bootloaders, anti-flash policies, KNOX and instant-warranty void if attempt to flash remotely anything.
If I were to count I'd say our Samsung Tab came with atleast 3~4 news apps which it will try to shove down your throat. (As they are baked into the default launcher so you can't even remove or disable them)
Maybe Sony/Lenovo comes out with a good tablet. The only other good aspect about N9 is that it features only Google default apps and very little to no bloat. So its rather clean.
Never thought I'd say this but, If you really need a good tablet. Personally, I'd recommend just getting an iPad instead (Coming from someone who uses 100% Android at all times)

The only reason i'm looking at a Galaxy Tab right now is because my mum and step dad came to visit and they both have a galaxy s7 edge and the thing bloody flies so i'm hoping that carries over to a future Tab S3 release if it ever comes out but you're right about the bloatware damn things came packed full of crap I wouldn't use but I think Samsung have actually bothered to optimize their skin more than in the past (before they upgraded, they had a galaxy S3 3g 1gig ram version and a og note and those things were turds) but i'll wait and see what happens as i'm not rooting or running custom roms anymore except on my old htc one x. (i'm alpha testing cm13 on it and it's going ok but damn are there issues we need to iron out). I don't think Sony is going to be doing another tablet even thought the z3 compact and the z4 were really good tablets from user and reviewer reports just from the amount of time between releases. It's been well over 18 months since the z4 tablet came out so i'm thinking they've pulled out of the tablet arena because of how poorly their mobile division is doing at the moment. I'm wary on lenovo because my dad had a bad experience with one of their recent 8" yoga tabs. Thing would constantly freeze, lockup then dad would have to reboot it manually so not the best experience there from a hardware point but the software is pretty bare bones and stock like but with lenovo icons, you get the standard google suite of apps and some lenovo additions, some are good and some are horrible (why they changed the look of multitasking and put in their own gallary i don't know but they ruined the look of the os and did not follow material design at all) but they're a more budget option so you get what you pay for. Asus is out as they don't sell their zenpad line here in Australia but i wouldn't have gone there anyways as their update support is absolutely woeful and i think their bloatware situation is worse the Samsung considering they let anyone buy there way in to get their apps installed. I would have looked at a pixel c but it's out of stock at google and some eBay sellers are asking $1000+ so that's out. I'm not in a hurry to get a new tablet thanks to my dad giving me the nexus 7 2013 i gave him back so I've got something to use in the meantime until something comes out at CES or MWC.

totally agree

I've owned Galaxy Nexus, N4, N5, both N7's. So, the N9 killed any trust for HTC, not Nexus. I got my older son 6P as his N4 was ageing out. Great phone! Too big for my hands, though. As my N5 was slowing down, I bought a 5X (after replacing DH's i4S with one and discovered I liked it). My first android was a pandigital novel which still works. I then got a 10.1" Toshiba Thrive.

I even tried that as we had two in the family. I replaced older son's ipad 2 with Samsung Tab pro 12.2-both sons got one as they have 1000's of digital comics, and that tab was the best for that. Even after jailbreaking the iPad, it was far too restrictive for me. Loved the display on the iPad. I'm just really picky [emoji20]

Well i took it back and the manager give me a full refund so that's the end of the nexus 9 experiment. Now to play the waiting game to see if any new tablets come out that are interesting.
Good luck.
