I am continuing my support request from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56110069
I am new to the i9205 but very experienced and knowledgeable with Android.
My device was secondhand and came with 4.2.2.
First thing I did was flash philz via Odin. I ran root via twrp.
I instantly booted to TW and backed up my EFS via terminal
I then went to philz. I wiped everything. Flash slim rom and gapps.
Upon boot to system, it just sticks on bootloader screen.
However. When I flash AOSP, it works amazing on it now. But I want to flash other Roms aside from AOSP.
It appears most of the custom roms aside from AOSP don't work and get stuck on bootloader
So I tried to flash slim again then recovered just booting and it booted to just a black screen this time I know the rom booted though and it got past bootloader because I was hearing lockscreen sounds etc even though I had a black screen
I did try updating via pc Odin to 4.4.2 in attempt to see if bootloader update would help, to no avail.
It appears the older AOSP kernel works. But anything with a newer kernel doesn't
If anyone can help I will be forever indebted to you

Question for you and may seem random but was the screen replaced on this unit by the seller. There are some reports that the newer boot loader and or kernel had rendered certain KitKat ROMs innnc. Stock to present a black screen. However if it was me I would flash a stock Odin file pre KitKat if you can. The root via the original alda-v guidelines then flash philzs again from.
Then update to the latest philz recovery only file from his main thread.

Interesting, I will try that. I have NO clue what the previous owner did
Was that also affecting AOSP based Kitkat roms
Did anyone ever find a resolution?

Thanks to @Silesh.Nair our beloved device developer, he has found a commit that appears to fix the issue. Until its implemented in his builds the test kernel is here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56122008

So ,im sorry but its a long story. Hopefully someone can help. My note is Rooted Ive been using TWRP. Everything had been fine until 2 days ago. I tried flashing a ROM i found on Goomanger.( I had been running liquid smooth) just wanted to try something different. Anyways it got stuck on a boot loop. Cant remember the name of the Rom. Anyways i was able to get back to recovery, thankfully. But when i wiped and flashed back to liquid smooth it would say optimizing apps, then it would reach a certain number then reboot and star all over again. So then i tried another Rom and the same thing happened. tried flashing back to stock rooted but it would turn on then completely crash and star booting up again. So finally i was able to flash paraandroid 4.1.2 and Gapps, but here is the kicker i have no service (AT&T) says cannot locate network, my IMEI is gone basically the cellular isn't working. Everything else works fine WiFi,apps, camera. Just cant make calls. I really need your guys help please.:crying:
If you have a suggestion please let me know, i hate using an old Iphone

Just odin back to stock. Get a complete factory stock image from the main sticky thread and flash it with Odin and Download Mode. There's a bug on one of the TWRP versions with 4.3-based ROMs that will put it into a bootloop by breaking device reboots. I was unable to flash my way out of the problem and was forced to do a complete reimage which solved all the problems and put me right back to clean-out-of-the-box state, then I reinstalled TWRP (though an older version before the boot loop bug) and re-flashed my custom ROM. The package I used was the stock image and Odin tool all in one .exe, just plug in to download mode and run it and it flashed bootloader, recovery, system, kernel, etc. all back to stock.

Thanks thats what i did, I just basically had to use KIES to use the emergency recovery, then root my phone again. My question is what version of TWRP causes this? cause i used the newest version i could find off GOO. My other concerne is, will it accept or be safe to use a custom ROM? Well i gues ill find out  THANKS AGAIN!
Everyone with the sgh-i717 is having problems with the latest TWRP and the most stable version is 2.5.0.0. Go with that one or you'll be starting all over again I imagine. And don't just stop at the download link in the OP's, read the thread and find out what's going on. The problems with TWRP have been going on for a while and the development threads have a lot of comments about the latest build causing problems. Good luck! :good:
I am looking for some help bc of all the roms out there I am really confused. Ihad a droid X before this and flashed several roms without a problem. Here is when I get lost:
Right now I am back on stock I605VRAMC3.
I use adam outliers root method to get rooted with super user acess.
This gives me TWRP not CWM.
If I use TWRP to flash a rom I end up with a bricked phone.
I would like to use a CM11 4.4 rom or something similar. When I watch the video on galaxynote2root.com the user uses CWM and if I use that on my phone it turns into a brick even after rooting. What step am I missing? I see some roms are touchwiz based. I'm not familiar with what touchwiz is or how to install ot before flashing roms or if I even need it for CM11. Anyone on the same build as me that has flashed several roms I would greatly appreciate any info so I can start to enjoy some of these roms and decide which one I like. Thanks.
Sorry, I haven't done this stuff to know exactly where the issue is, but I will assume you're more likely to get the answer in the development section since it's all about themes, roms, rom flashing, rooting etc. If not there, then the trouble shooting section. Hope that helps. (assuming you're still looking)
You can flash Philz recovery in twrp & switch to it. Then you can flash CM11.

You can use casual to root and unlock bootloader.... And then install cwm via rom manager apk... Hope this solves your concern

How is TWRP bricking your phone? I rooted with Outler's method and have had no problems with TWRP. You've mentioned that CWM has bricked your phone too. If that's the case, how were able to flash anything at all? As for TouchWiz, it's not anything you install. There are two basic types of ROMS for the N2. TouchWiz based, which have more of the Samsung apps along with the ROM customizations, and AOSP (Android Open Source Project). AOSP is more like stock Android, but with custom features. CM11 is an AOSP ROM. Here are the steps I took when I initially rooted:
Installed Samsung drivers to my laptop
Made sure Java was up to date
D/L Outler's Casual
Put phone in USB Debugging Mode
Attached phone
Ran Casual
Rooted phone (at this point I believe I had to select between CWM or TWRP)
There you have it. If you missed any of these steps, that could be the problem. Another issue might be that you're trying to use TWRP and CWM simultaneously
I'm assuming you are not wiping(factory reset. I do it three times) prior to your install. If you're not then your trying to install a rom on top of a rom and bam...boot loop.

+1 for this... when i tried to flash CM11 using TWRP I ended up in a bootloop.. restored my backup, downloaded rom manager apk from google play and used that to install CWM... then in CWM did a backup, wipe everything, and flashed CM11 + gapps and everything works without a hitch
one more note... my CWM backup was hanging on generating the MD5 sum, so i changed the encryption method away from the default... takes up more space on the ext-sd, but it works.
Ok...so flashing and rooting is not new to me. However I may have found myself in a pickle. I have an S3 that I gave to my wife. She did not like the CM nightly that I had on it. So I downloaded the original stock rom that came with it and flashed it with odin. Everything seemed fine, but on reboot, it loops. Can't get into recovery or download mode. Any Ideas. And yes....I have searched and thus far, I have found nothing that matches my scenario. I was reading somewhere where there was a sticky in the general forum about this stuff, but did not see anything.
Could use some help. I don't mind buying the wife a new phone....may do that anyway. But I have one more daughter that I could give this to if I could get it fixed.
Peace
When you first flashed it with oden, did you flash an insecure kernel (flash recovery)?
If so, do so, then enter recovery and select factory reset & cache clean, so it may boot.
It generally happens when data is left over from a different/incompatible kernel.

The first time was with CM and everything was fine. I used it for around a year with CM. I did a few updates from them. Then when i used odin to flash back to original I did NOT flash a kernel separately, if that is what you are asking. The kernel came with the rom. Perhaps I don't follow. At any rate I can't do anything atm because I can't get into recovery or download modes.

To clarify, cleaning (factory reset & cache) is for the kernel, all roms for this model come with a kernel. But they are different. A CM kernel for 4.4 is not going to downgrade well to a stock 4.3 (example version) kernel, without doing this. The boot loop is a pretty common result of not doing this, happened many times when upgrading (depending on how extensive the update).
So how do I get into tje phone without being able to go into recovery or download modes?

Hi All... help...
I have a Note3 SM-N9005 which is rooted. I have been trying to get CWM installed.
I started by using ROM Manager and this just didnt work at all - the recovery partition stayed stock.
So I downloaded the Samsung Note 3 (International) recovery image (6.0.4.6) (non-touch) from https://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager.
I used Cygwin to convert to a .tar file and then flashed to PDA using Odin.
All looked OK and Odin passed the install - however when I tried to reboot into recovery my Note3 just gets stuck in a boot loop - the only way I could get it working again was to re-flash using Odin and when it reboots it starts and works normally - but if I reboot into recovery mode it just keeps re-booting!!
Any thoughts on how to fix this or whether the best option is to flash a whole ROM with CWM already packed? Alternatively - any ideas on where I can get a CWM file which will work on my Note3?
Also - now this has started getting messy, any advice on backing up EFS (just in case )
Thanks in advance
So you reflashed the whole stock firmware via Odin and recovery still isn't working? Very strange. Rom Manager sucks and has for years now. Why didn't you just grab either CWM or TWRP (which I find way better for most phones) from the subforum for your phone here on Xda?

Hi es0tericcha0s
Thanks - TBH I have only just replaced my S4 with the Note3 and just set everything up - so didnt want to reflash with a custom ROM so followed the instructions for installing CWM... and failed I did install TWRP a while ago and couldnt really get on with it - if you think it is better I might reflash the whole phone with a new ROM and give it a go.
I think I did download a CWM img file from here and when I flashed it to PDA the phone wouldnt boot at all - from memory I am sure it came up saying it couldnt boot and enetered "Odin mode"... I will have to back up my important stuff and try again tonight.
Any recommendations on a good ROM to play with? Need a stable product ideally as I dont get much time to play
Thanks
I would just restore the entire phone with the stock firmware file and start fresh. TWRP here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2494245 As far as roms, I haven't played with the international Note 3 in awhile, but I typically recommend stock based roms for less potential issues (I personally prefer CM based roms, but I have more time and experience with dealing with possible problems than most). I would take a look at AllianceRom if you want to customize a lot on stock based http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2571255 or Omega http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2470441
As always, you should read through some of the stuff other active users are saying about it to make sure it fits your needs, but those development teams support a lot of Samsung devices and usually provide solid updates.

Thanks es0tericcha0s - I downloaded the TWRP tar and flashed to PDA - all worked first time... I will give it a go and see how I get on, when I get more time I will do a clean flash too!
Good deal. Lemme know if you need anything else.
Hello,
Would anyone have a link to download said ROM ? I have been searching for days and I only got dead links.
I flashed a few different custom roms in the last year and changed from CWM Recovery to TWRP and now back to CWM. I don't know if all that has anything to do with this but I am unable to restore the 3.2 backups I made with CWM after rooting.
The first one gives me a bunch of errors while the other seems to be restoring properly except that my Tab won't boot after, I only get a bunch of colored rectangles on the top of the screen.
I'd love a copy for posterity too, but you're right; it's hard to find. Samsung-Updates.com has the stock Samsung ICS ROM though, if all you're looking to do is to flash an official Samsung ROM.
