Zatch as phone
I have been using it as a phone ever since I got it. Since it is a table it does feel a little awkward but coming from the z ultra I'm ok with it

How did you solve the issue with the missing private speaker? Do you carry a Bluetooth headset with you wherever you go, or do you simply let everybody else listen to your conversation?
I try to use mine as a phone too, but the lacking speaker is making me go nuts. Carrying a separate headset with you wherever you go is kinda annoying... Which is why I'm considering the galaxy tab s instead, even though it's a bit older than the Z3TC.
well if you have a Bluetooth use Bluetooth otherwise lower the volume all the way down. I can still hear the volume way down so. I use the SBH52 when I can but when I don't I use it as is. just lower it way down

am sorry but what is a private speaker as related to a phone/tablet? Surely this device has a speakerphone function, yes? maybe dumb question but asking. Thanks.
Ok got it...

So this does it for me..no flash and far far more importantly no private speaker i.e. microphone...no wonder Sony is losing (of course other reasons, but they lost me here)
It does have a microphone right underneath the headphone jack. The only thing is that sound comes out of both top and bottom speakers when in a call. You can lower the volume as mentioned above and place calls without people overhearing your conversation. Using a bluetooth headset would be better though. And I haven't had any complaints about people not being able to hear me on the other end.

I called o2 and spoke to them using the tablet it was awesome very handy feature of this device and as said above adjust the volume all the way down its fine heads up.

ok...so let me confirm (sorry about asking this again)...so you can turn down the volume all the way (that way it does not sound like a speakerphone) but yet it works like a regular phone? (not talking bluetooth etc...just regular usage) and there is no issue at other end like folks think you are talking on speakerphone? Please confirm as my purchase hinges on this (though having a hard time coping with no flash...seriously how could they justify this-no matter what blah blah camera they have..an led light has other uses too (Sure one can light up the screen but what if you are using the screen too and just using the light to look at something more clearly in dim light not necessarily to take a picture!..and in much darker environments..you might just need the flash...c'mon SONY bozos)
anyway....right from one of their first Xperia models in 2010 where you had to swipe in an arc to unlock and they had no pinch to zoom...the disconnect lives on!
I'm looking to replace my Samsung Note 8 (N5100) which is my primary phone. The Z3TC is the main contender, but it I need confirmation.
Please correct me if I'm wrong: there are two LTE variants, the SGP 621 and SGP 641, both have telephony capability, but neither the US nor the international variants of have an earpiece speaker for listening to calls?
Any issues using the sbh52 with the z3 tablet?

I just bought s3 recently and have faced mic issues, its not able to pick up voice easily, have to use the other hand to cover my mouth and phone for it to be able to catch my voice!!
I am going through mic issues.
I had a mic problem with my first S3 during phone calls. I couldn't do anything about it everyone was saying they couldn't hear me.
(The sim I am using is an British UK O2 micro simcard that I used in a iphone 4, cheap samsung, and samsung S2 previously with no problems at all.)
I then returned the phone to the T-mobile shop retailers, they said it was rare and not a common fault.
My new one is doing the exact same thing, I didn't update it nor is there a new update.
Can someone please help as I am lost. Thank you.

s3 mic problem
im having same problems n im on my third 1, all with the same problems. just been through all setting n nothing, waiting to hear back from my network provider (3). good phone but really annoyed with this problem now, everything is ok i put on loud speaker but this is no use when im tryin to run a business.......
I thought I was the only one facing the issue . The handsfree using the wired headset is completely faulty and the other party can hardly hear you . However sometime it works.
I tried some options ..
1. Dont insert the wired headset in the middle of the call it wont work.
2. Insert the wired headset and then dial the number - this seems to work most of the times
3. Accepting the call while the wired headset is inserted - this seems to work.
Not sure what the solution is - anyone able to resolve it ?
not the best voice receptions by the mic....but i havent got any complaints from the receiving end...and audio recording not great but better than the s2..used both the phones for quiet long
I have same issue. Other party doesn't hear me most of the times clearly. They say that I sound like i'm using speaker mode and I'm walking in the room with bucket in my head.
I used some kind of phonecall recording app and from there I can hear myself quite clearly. Maybe it is related to service provider?
Now switched to gsm mode only to see does it make difference.

mic problem in S3
M also having t same problem...hav done all the ways explained above...but still in trouble....sometimes mic works great but sometimes it dont...
microphooooone hole
I have a solution guys. Use left hand when phone call or grab it just for upper part. You are covering small hole for microphone.
I have like 1phone/year and never happened to me that i cover microphone hole when calling. With this one I have to stay focused to dont cover.... Its getting better but samsung engineers terribly overlooked this.
I phone like 4-5 hours per day, so i have habit to let phone just touch my hand and pretty much dont hold it at all. But when you hold it right hand your below thumb area of hand get to cover microphone hole....
and this is when someone else looses my voice over phone....
There is a microphone at the bottom and one at the top. How are you holding your phone? No matter what I do, I can't cover them up during a call.

Same here, cannot uncheck 'noise cancellation'
Wired headset only works when call made first, then audio plug inserted, even with BT disabled.
Multiple headsets mics not working that are known good headsets tested on other phones.

I have played with recording a bit lately (due to another issue of noise in audio recording) and I found that the upper microphone is disabled during a call from some reason. It is used in other video/audio recording though.

if I'm not mistaken the upper mic is working solo when ur on speaker during a call.
when u use the ear peace the buttom one is the main one and the upper one is for noise cancelation.

I only tried on speaker and the upper mic was definitely not catching anything - if I placed my hand over the bottom one, there was no sound from my side, even when I was talking directly to the upper mic.
Not sure whether it is a feature or a bug (there were some reports that the mics are switched by mistake on the software level) but if it is a feature then it is rather unfortunate one as it is quite common to hold the phone at its bottom.

You right, thats the reason for upper microphone - do compare signals from lower ant top, and eliminates noise (that coming more from top) from voice (that coming much more from low)
Other reason probably is stereo sound when making video...
PS
Comon guys, it is almost impossible to hide microphone with hand, left or right - does not matter. You should have palm from soft material as balloon to hide it Otherwise it is hardly possible by mistake, even if you try it is hard to do it
Hi all. New here, so hopefully this will be concise enough.
T-mobile HTC Amaze 4g, no mods, all stock plus a few apps. Everything working fine on the phone. Purchased a Platronics BT headset, works OK; limited range, but passable. Just bought a Sony MEX-BT4100P car unit. Did the install myself (retired auto technician, so I know a little about doing it correctly). All working OK, BT pairs fine, functions all good (Phone book, redial, etc). Problem is a buzz noise during calls, only audible on the other end of the call, but it's pretty loud. Sound is similar to a slightly shorted mic cable. Voice is audible, just a loud background buzz. No noises with any other car stereo function. No noises with any other phone function.
Talked to car stereo vendor, they sent new unit and microphone. No change. Talked to HTC. They say that since the Plantroncs works fine, there's no problem with the phone.
I'm trying to find out if anyone else has experienced this specific issue and if so what had to happen to resolve it.
Any thoughts? I don't have another BT phone to try
Android 4.0.3, Sense 3.6. Don't know what other info might be helpful.
Thanks.

Hey Charlie,
I remember having a plantonics headset. They were awful for me and they broke eventually. Did you try another headset? I think the headphones you're using could be the source of the problem. Hopefully someone else experienced in BT and headsets can assist you.

The Plantronics headset is fine; it's the Sony car stereo BT function that's making the noise...
It's been a while since I've had the stock ROM on my phone, but try looking under the settings menu in dialer for 'noise suppression' and make sure it's ticked.
Does your head unit have a gain setting for the mic? I had a JVC unit that had one in the Bluetooth menu settings.
Actually, I just looked up your manual, you do have a mic gain.
It looks like you also have an echo canceller/noise canceller setting as well. See what playing with those do for you.
Failing those options, it sounds like you have interference in your mic. Try routing it away from any wires that carry current. You might try just holding it out in the open and making a test call.

Head unit - I've tried all settings on mic gain and noise cancellation with no changes at all to the noise, although voice quality changed as expected.
Microphone has been pulled out of the car, literally to the full extent of its cable, with no change. I've wrapped the mic and its cable in tin foil and jumpered that tin foil shield to chassis ground with no change.
It does indeed to me sound like microphone interference, but nothing I do, including a different mic, changes the noise. Head unit and mic have been changed out for new.
Does it happen even with the engine off?

This tells me it's not interference, at least not from the car's electrical system. Do you happen to live under high tension lines?
Ok, here's what we've got in an extremely simplified flowchart:
mic------>head unit------->bluetooth-------->phone-------->person called
Follow the path, eliminate as you go.
1. Unplug the mic completely. Make a test call, see if your caller hears the noise still. If not, it's either the mic (replaced already, but not unheard of to get multiple bad ones. Try a desktop computer microphone?) or poor shielding in the radio (not easy to fix, even harder to locate.) If it's still there....still might be shielding in the head unit. Unlikely though.
2. You've already messed around with the head unit's settings. Nothing to do here.
3. Bluetooth. My radio used a USB bluetooth adapter, yours is built in. Can't try a different BT.
4. Phone. You don't know someone with a phone with bluetooth? If pairing with a different device results in a clear call, it's the phone (you could try rooting/updating/replacing it. Maybe they just don't like each other?) If the noise is still there with a different phone, it's either the head unit (you got another bad one or they just don't make them very well) or it's outside your control. Maybe the tower itself. You could try driving quite some distance away, till you're on a different tower. See if it's clear then.
Beyond all this, I really don't know of anything else to try, apart from getting a different head unit.

I did try unplugging the mic and the noise goes away, but according to Sony and the vendor, if a mic isn't plugged in, the entire audio chain gets muted automatically, so it's not much of a test. I'm going to see if I can dig up another mic like a computer mic with a mute or on/off switch and see what that might do.
I'm in a rural area and not too many cell phones I can borrow here. Might be one I can find...
I'll try another tower too; that's something I have not tried. But this really sounds like audio input chain noise rather than post-processing noise. I was an audio engineer in a previous life and I am still leaning towards mic-related issues...
Thanks.

This is for anyone that currently has the phone, If you are talking on the phone and you hold it between your neck and your head, with your shoulders (in order to use your hands to do something else), do you find that the person on the other end can still hear you?
This was a problem with my nexus one. Some have mentioned that the US variant, the Xperia Z1s had that issue. It has to do with where the microphone is located. I know the obvious answer is to get blutooth headsets or use the headsets in the box for calls, but sometimes you are doing something and you answer your phone quickly and toss it between your neck and hour head to say something as you quickly finish up a task with your hands..etc
Also, can the headset be used to answer calls and speak to a contact through?

Any owners can confirm this??
Man: I purchased the first Gear Watch when it first came out. Loved the watch and the only reason why I purchased the Gear S yesterday was becasue I have always been disappointed with the speaker volume on calls. This has always been a gripe of the owners of the first gear and so I just knew Samsung would boost the volume of their latest iteration. Well I've been using the Gear S and the speaker volume on the calls is just as low (terrible) as the Gear 1.
I find it curious when everyone else discusses this watch they talk about everything but the call volume on phone calls/ Well I guess I am the only one buying the watch to actually use the phone feature. I will be taking it back and going back to the Gear 1. Might as well because the speakerphone is exactly the same with me saving $349.
Any one else experiencing this same low volume problem. Also, for Gear 2 the XDA folks came out with mods to boost the volume. Do you think you guys will be doing the same thing or volume boost mod for the Gear S. If so I will keep the watch because I absolutely love the watch
Personally I don't want to use the included speaker. What do you expect from a device this size?
Please just get a bluetooth headset to go with it.
I'm very satisfied with my Jabra Tag.
Sent from my SM-N910C using Tapatalk HD
For the poster who suggested I use a bluetooth headset with the watch, I want to say thanks so much for the guidance. Tho it still leaves me baffled. I mean I spent $345 for this watch and I guess Samsung expects me to spent $100 to $150 more for a bluetooth headset to make the phone application useable. WoW, this is getting really expensive. Now I will be walking around with a phone, a smartwatch and a bluetooth headset. Now that is being a real techie.
The poster also wrote what kind of speaker output would I expect from such a small device. Well, some of the off brand, under $80 smartwatches are just as small and the speaker output is almost double that of Samsung's. I mean let's be honest here. You can get an off brand watch to give you notifications and calls just like the Samsung watch. You pay four times the amount for a premuim watch from Samsung expecting dynamic features that far surpass the off brand watches. But I am not seeing that, and this is coming from a person whose phones are samsung as well as my tablet and smartwatches. Just getting a little frustrated.
One last point. From the other threads it is my understanding that all incoming calls are automatically routed to the speaker, Meaning that every time you get a call you have to search out the watch and route the call to your headset. This may not be the case but if it is, it suggests to me that Samsung factored the speakerphone into the call application.
Any way, after all of the negative publicity that Samsung got over the poor speaker volume in the GEar 1 I would have thought they would have increased the volume of the Gear S, at least somewhat.

You'll probably want to contact the developer of the volume booster app for the Gear 2. It isn't that hard to port over to the Gear S unless it was a root app.
As for me, the volume seems fine with me. I don't think it's for using in crowded places but when I'm in the car or at home, it works for me.
For what it is worth, when I wore my gear s a little on the snug side I found the speaker volume a bit "concerning". When I loosened the watch strap up one notch it made a huge difference in the speaker volume.
I don't find the volume on mine low. I only had my first conversation over speakerphone, when I activated my SIM card, and both sides could hear just fine. Mine is not super snug, and I wonder if hairy wrists could affect volume? (I don't know where the speaker is, but just a thought)
I use my LG Tone+ headset with all my devices, so I never tried the speaker out again for calls.
Having same problem with volume, have to put watch near ear to hear clearly. strangely, the first day it was fairly loud, but once I loaded all my apps and settings, etc, volume dropped. Don't know the connection, but just putting it out there.
Also, have no interest in Bluetoothheadset on top of watch. Even though I own several
I'm half deaf, and I have no issue with the volume. Can hear phone or even music quite well.
This might help, go to settings, sound, volume and max out each setting my volume is
Back to normal. I turned call volume all the way ,but something had put system volume at half, turning up fixed the issue.
I find the speaker on this quite impressive. Plenty loud enough when I was at home testing with music and calls.
Honestly I would have to wonder "why" anyone would choose to NOT use this with a bluetooth headset....that would be akin to running amok in public with your phone on speaker all the time...and let me tell you there are people like that and it's very irritating to others around you.
Me I have my trusty LG 730 Tones around my neck all day, they are on and ready to go at a press of a button, the the battery life in these things are great!!

The speaker is in the left side of the S. If you move your hand to the right the sound will "increase" in volume. The explanation is simple...'you're not using it right' ( if I remember well that's a classic explanation from a big, biggest tech brand)
Could someone please confirm whether the tablet can or cannot be used as a hold-it-to-the-ear phone? Online reviews and specs seem to differ on this. Does it actually have a microphone and an ear-volume speaker in the correct places to be used as a phone held against the ear, or does it only have telephony via either loudspeaker or headset? I want to purchase one, but this is a dealbreaker for me. Many thanks.

It has the gsm voice radio but not the earpiece. You can use bluetooth or speaker but its just not meant to hold to your face. Although, I gotta say, I have a samsung 8 inch tablet with phone capabilities and I never used the earpiece. When I was in public it was too embarrasing to do that and at home I would use speaker. Of course most of the time I have bluetooth headphones/headset around so thats what I use. I have these 30 dollar plantronics tiny earpieces that last for 11 hours. I use for Podcasts, audiobooks, movies, music and... phone calls, always have one on me.
Many thanks for clearing that up for me. What a shame, though. I was on the verge of buying one, but I really would need to be able to use it as a regular phone (I must admit I would have no embarrassment holding it to my ear in public!). I thought I'd finally found myself an 8-inch phone, oh well.
