I have a S4 Mini running on 4.2.2.
It did not come with the S Health App, neither is it available for download in my country.
In the countries where it is either preloaded or available (Korea, France, etc..), can you use the Walking Mate (pedometer) feature without devices like a Gear?
I tried to install the app (backed up from my S4 Active, also running on 4.2.2), but the Mini wants to sync with an S-Band....
On the Active the pedometer function (Walking Mate) works perfectly, why not on the Mini?

The mini doesn't have the pedometer sensor. You can get walkmate in the play store which is from Sony.

If you say the Mini does not have the pedometer sensor, which sensor are you referring to?
What other sensors does S Health use apart from the Accelerometer and Gyro?

The pedometer is the sensor which tracks your steps. I'm not sure.

In 2009, I bought N97 which had electronic pedometer integrated in the device. The device used its Accelerometer to determine the steps. Technically it had no pedometer or it wasn't advertised as it had one.. But it calculated the steps very well.. I read few technical articles when I wanted to know how it worked back then.. Now additional Gyroscope integration enhanced the calculation and thus it improved the elimination of False Steps.. According to my understandings, Our Devices use Accelerometer and Gyroscope to determine the steps not actual pedometer.. Curiously, I tried S Health app on S4 Mini Duos, it didn't come preinstalled. I tried Walkmate by sony.. accuracy is not satisfactory..
I just heard about "Google Fit" by Google. I am going to try it now..

Walkmate is a bit accurate. I'm gonna try google fit soon too. But please report back after testing it.

I tried "fit".. Running since a day.. Compared the results of walkmate and fit.. fit beats walkmate marginally according to my understanding.. I am going to keep the fit..
fit runs in the background without troubling..
battery consumption is very low compared to walkmate or other pedometer apps.
Even the shakes are registered as actual steps in both Walkmate and Fit.. but fit is slightly better at recognizing false steps..
UI is simple and needs more features.
Guys, Try it for yourselves..

I just bought some Chinese knock-off called Star x18i (that looks like an SE Arc) based on Android 2.3.6. It works fine, except a few sensors, that don't seem to work properly : magnetic field and gyroscope.
I tried to install different compass apps, but it doesn't work.
I installed Data Monitor app.
For Magnetic Field, it indicates :

But when I launch "Monitor sensor" in the Data Monitor app, I get real-time figures for plenty of sensors (accelerometer, Proximity, gravity, linear_acceleration), but nothing for magnetic_field nor gyroscope...
Does it mean that Magnetic_field is disabled?Or that it doesn't simply exist on the device? Is there a way to enable it?
By the way, my device is not rooted so far, do you think that could help?

On some devices like Htc One, your chineese tablets and my tablet Prestigio 7.0 hd i installed cpu z on them and there was nothing about a compas module, my s5830i has a compas module so i can use it and cpu z is showing it.
Are the aps you want to run on your devices saying that you dont have compas modules?
If they are you dont have it.
Some may not report it, but i dont thesee tablets of yours can do it.
About the rooting try kingo android root on your pc (nothing is sure)

for sensor issue bro the sensor sure was working on my stock rom , when tying new rom it's not working , althogh i replaced each file with *sensor* in its name from stock to port

I know that there are times when a company will use a similar firmware for their devices. On my old S2, it had an option for HDMI-Out in the settings, but that hardware was not available in my device. Perhaps a similar thing is happening here? Also when I pulled up specs for your device, I saw nothing about a compass.

Have no clue what the whatsapp is, some sort of messaging thing? May get it to work

with stock kernel and ROM, Gear Fit works fine with Samsung Galaxy S4. Only the automatic unlocking by near doesn't. It is either S5 feature or depends newer Gear Fit Manager app on G5

wrong! whatsapp notifications work fine with my s3 mini
Yes every notification you get on your phone also works with Gear Fit. But you have to activate the apps on Gear Fit Manager.

גיר פיט הוא ממש קל, אך אין הרבה מפתחים ואי אפשר לדבר בו. אפשר לראות רק התראות ולנתק על אנשים. גם אם מתקשרים אפשר להחזיר סמס מבין ה10 שאת מגדירה בטלפון.
יש כמה אפליקציות טובות כמו חדשות באנגלית, להתקשר מהגיר פיט דרך הטלפון ועוד כמה גימיקים...
בגיר 2 ניו יש את כל זה חוץ מזה שזה קל וממש נוח. אך יש בזה הרבה יותר עיצובים לשעון הפנימי ואפשר לדבר איתי. הוא גם כמעט אותו מחיר.
ויש מחשבון, הוראות למקום מסוימים ועוד אפליקציות...
אני הייתי הולך על הגיר 2 ניו אך קיבלתי את הגיר פיט ממשהו ב600 שקל.

With limited functions you can setup it without samsung phone... For example I use it with Sony Z1 and notifications work, but all samsung apps(which need samsung account) do not work...

Im download it from HERE
Im first download version 2.1.14071502 and install all APKs together with GearManagerStub.apk. Then Im pair phone setup it and notifications doesn't work. Then Im uninstall all and leave phone paired. and install all APK's from latest version 2.2.14110499 and some APK's from 2.1.14071502 version(I didn't update existing from 2.2.14110499 with files from 2.1.14071502...)
So now I have installed next:

Check out "Notifications for Gear S". You can download it from the regular Google Playstore, and it allows you to answer texts/whatsap/viber, etc. I don't know if it will work with your specific phone, but it's only $1.25 I think, and does more than the native notifications do.
ETA: Sammy also offer it in their app store, but the dev says update cycles take much longer there.

I think that on android 5.0 don't work the "Gear Manager" because I follow step by step the instructions and don't work for me. When I open the app Gear Manager, this stopped with an error. I think that this error is produced by Android Lolipoop.
Tomorrow, I try with motorola moto g to view if it is posible work with this smartphone.

Yes Im pretty shure that Gear S will not work with 5.0 until some samsung phones will not have it stock and gear manager support it...

So, i just bought a Samsung Gear S for my HTC One, and yes i know this is not 100% fully working, but i'll get a Samsung Alpha in few months.
Well, i followed your tutoriels and guides, and nothing went as planned.
The most embarassing thing is that i can't acces the Samsung Gear Store : is this a normal thing ? Or did i just mess up somewhere ?
Surprinsingly, S Voice function works 100%. I can't control my music tho. And the phone calls works very fine.
So, do you guys have any idea how i could fix this store issue ? Cause i would like to install something like Opera Mini or some other apps.

You need a Samsung phone that you can pair with the Gear s in order access the Samsung app store to install apps on the watch.
Best to find a friend with a compatible phone , pair it with theirs, then add whatever apps you want.
Or go to an electronics store that has compatible phones on display and pair your watch with one of them if you can.

I have an HTC M8 too and tried the workaround. This caused various issues and a few things didn't work post install of the Gear Mgr. I wanted something better and needed access to the gear store. And the last thing I wanted was be forced to buy and use a Samsung phone.
This isn't for everybody, but here's my fix...
I just bought a cheapo Samsung Gear S compatible phone off eBay and turned it into a notification relay point. You can get one for as little as ~$70:
Plug in it, connect to Wi-Fi, download Gear Mgr, clone the apps/email (from HTC) you want Notifs from, and set it up to remotely send the chosen app's notifications. For your HTC's texts, there are a handful of SMS forwarding apps on Play that work great. One app allows for you to reply with the native mobile # just as if it came from your HTC. Last step, set your watch to be standalone.
Everything works, including S-voice.

I have someone who would love to get the Gear S but is a hard core iPhone user. I guess he could get a cheapo Galaxy phone, connect it to Wifi at home, but I don't understand the clone part, and how the cheapo gets the HTC notifications.
Guessing it may not work at all with an iPhone, but still interested in understanding the process.
Samsung could have really tapped that market by releasing a Gear Manager app on the Apple app store, and advertised a bit more.
No one knows what's on my wrist, but once explained, a lot of people would be potential customers if only the friggin Galaxy phone wasn't a prerequisite.

What you need to do is basically put the same apps on the relay device as your daily driver. Sign in to each app and then go to the Gear Mgr and make sure that app has a check mark.
As far as email. Use the stock Samsung email app and/or GMail . Enter all of your account info and, again, make sure the Gear Mgr is set.
So basically, all your doing is taking a dummy S compatible phone and creating a clone of your phone's app and email configuration.
Not sure if the iStore has an app that will forward your texts...but, hopefully, they should. If not, Google voice is another way to go.

Any of you know any app that can check whether IR Blaster is working?, mine seems doesn't work, Mi Remote is obsolete, can't seems to show any brand of tv or other electronics appliances, i use SURE universal remote app, doesn't work either, any ideas?
I know how can you check wheter the IR light works or not. You can use digital canera or another mobile phone. Infrared light is invisible to humans, but when you capture it on camera, it should blink white light on the camera's screen.

Hi. Mi Remote relies on cloud-stored list of appliances and it seems that the older version can't connect to the servers to get the data. Update Mi Remote app via Mi Store. It solved the problem for me.
