Hi,
Currently I have NUT's dual recovery installed. Trying to install the latest TWRP 2.8 following TWRP's website, fails everytime. I know the Xperia recoveries are different from other devices.
I have a locked device. Is there a way to get the new recovery onto my Z2? Even from flashing from the current recovery maybe?
Regards,
B
No, custom kernel/recovery requires unlocked bootloader, you'll have to unlock or wait for nut to update dual recovery

But after flashing monxDified I had 2.8. When I wanted to use eXistenz, I went back to stock and flashed Dual recovery again
Flashing TWRP
Sorry to hijack the thread but I have a related question.
I'm running Doomlords CWM recovery and .402, unlocked and rooted. I'd like to update to TWRP. All of the guides I've found on flashing TWRP assume you don't already have a custom recovery. Do you suppose I could just install TWRP through TWRP Manager over the existing CWM? Would I need to flash a new kernel patched version of the stock ROM that supports TWRP?
Thanks in advance.
No issues so far running the teamwin recovery on LB.

MonxDified includes 2.8 with his rom if you must run 2.8 now find a rom with it included otherwise wait for Dual recovery to be updated.

If TWRP can be flashed from Recovery with a ROM, surely it must be able to flash TWRP on its own???

NO, Z2 doesn't have a separate recovery partition therefore, as I understand it, recovery needs to be flashed as part of the kernel.

Yes you are correct, looking into it further, with locked bootloader the recovery is actually located in /system/bin therefore some magic involved in booting recovery, but my point stands in that the recovery has to be modified from standard to be bootable from its non standard locale.

So I was on Exizentence ROM and wanted to try out CM11, so I did a backup just in case I didn't like it. Well I don't and now I can't get into twrp recovery...help.
I downloaded the TWRP app from the play store and flashed the TWRP recovery ...and now I don't have recovery. I can boot into recovery. My phone works and all but I would love to go back to the other stock ROM.

you cant install recovery normaly to xperias
twrp does not support Z2
it is required to have a unlocked bootloader
you can use flashtool to do that
you can also use flashtool to install recovery

you can reinstall recovery using nuts recovery for locked bootloaders
or if you know how you can use flashtool to flash one of the recoveries found in the dev sections

I do not think you will be lol if you soft brick your phone. use nuts dual recovery installer to get recoveries back. boot to recovery and flash a new rom, failing that use flashtool to go back to stock and start again. once new rom is on flash nuts dual recovery again
So, never had a Sony-Device, the guides and instructions here are a bit unclear to me.
As far as i understood before going custom:
Downgrade to .532 with flashtool -> run BackupTA -> upgrade to latest again (rly neccessary?) -> then unlock Bootloader
Pretty straight forward up until here.
From there on i can use [NUTS]s XZDualRecovery if i want to stay on stock-kernel and flash custom roms frem there without any problem as far as i understood.
Is this correct?
But what if i want to use a custom kernel at some point?
DooMKernel for example is flahsed via Fastboot, but only compatible with Stock-Sony-Roms
PimpedKernel for example on the other hand is CM-based only and only uses a recovery flashable zip
I'm a little bit confused because of that.
Is a Kernel and / or recovery included in every ROM? (Edit: Yep Kernel is..)
Can i just use [NUTS] recovery and then flash any ROM / Kernel trough it? And afterwards a custom Kernel if the one included in ROM (if any?) lacks any features i want?
competent devs who maintain roms for this phone would include a recovery in their package
slimrom does this and i don't have to worry about losing trwp recovery

The downgrading is no longer necessary, use the easyroot tool. Or use the dualrecovery installer for locked bootloaders then flash superuser zip from recovery. Once you have it rooted then back up TA and unlock bootloader. You should be able to flash boot.img from flashtool, if you wanted to download a rom and pull it from zip. I mention that because most roms only have one recovery, so if you flash the img from the rom you want to install first with flashtool you could make a backup that could be restored with new recovery. One other thing that I learned the hard way is a backup made before unlocking bootloader will relock it if restored.
No downgrading, just root and back up TA, great
So i need to flash boot.img from the ROM every time i want to install a new ROM? Or just the first time going from stock to custom? Or just if i have twrp n current rom and the rom i wanna flash is only compatible with CWM?

Here is a brand spanking new guide to check out that is up to date.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z-ultra/general/guide-everything-root-4-4-4-t2938098
I will try to put forth an example to try and demonstrate what I trying to convey in regards to flashing boot.img.
Example.... You are on a rom that contains CWM and you are going to flash a rom that contains TWRP and you wish to have a backup of first rom that could be restored you would flash the img. with TWRP then make backup. Another option would be to just go ahead and use CWM to make backup but you would need to flash that img. in order to be able to restore. I think most roms can be flashed from either recovery at the moment, the concern is your backup being compatible with whichever one is in your current rom.
So, in the boot.img is Kernel+Recovery, alright, and i only need to worry about flashing boot.img für backup reasons.
Pretty much answers what i was wondering, thanks guys
Does a ROOTED Z2 has already a STOCK RECOVERY?(sorry for noob and if it does can I use the STOCK RECOVERY in flashing a COSTUM ROM like MOONWALKER or EXISTENZ roms? and if not, how about flashing a DUAL RECOVERY using the STOCK RECOVERY is it possible?!

If you want to flash a custom Rom you need a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP.
Like NUTs Dual Recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261606
If you have an unlocked Bootloader you can flash any boot.img which includes a custom recovery.

Have you searched? These seem like fairly basic questions. Possibly questions that may have been answered in a kernel thread, recovery thread and a cm12 thread.
Search before post dude !
Use fastboot in flashtool, how ?
Use search button

Ok I finally flashed the recovery TWRP but cannot join to recovery I press the vol+ when phone is booting but it simply bott normally
You need a custom kernel, try flashing Advanced Stock Kernel by AndroPlus
Pressing Power key during boot will tell the kernel to load fotakernel(recovery)
This one? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3005894 that Kernel includes a Recovery? I only want flash a custom ROM (no stock) and forget Stock

Well flash this so you can use fotakernel so you can use fotakernel to flash a custom rom
Thanks, I'll flash the Advanced Stock Kernel and later I'll try to install Cyanogenmod or Resurrection Remix, hope it works.
Hi guys,
After seeing so many issues with unlocking bootloader, I decided to root on a locked bootloader. However, is it possible to install zips on a locked bootloader? Eg. V4A?
We have a working recovery for locked bootloader (see [NUT]'s dual recovery in the cross device development section). So yes it is.

Yes you can just flash from recovery.
You can only flash SONY STOCK custom ROM's.
Xposed works fine for me on my locked bootloader.
