Pin code Locked - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi can anyone help, can't unlock my phone keep getting the following:-
Unfortunately, com.android.keyguard has stopped
Would like to know if there's any other way than perform a factory reset?
Thanks

Factory reset is the first step, next would be flash firmware with Odin then factory reset again.
Usual suspects are mods to the framework or corrupt files/settings.

[Q] custom rom/hard reset question

HI all.
I have Simply Honey 2.8 Rom on my phone and have had this for the last few months.
I wanted to do a hard reset (since my phone seems to be laggy and force closing more often)
When the phone boots up after a hard reset, will it boot up with the custom ROM or with stock?
Is there anything else i need to make sure to do, before i hard reset?
Thanks so much,
riskaa
Referring to your use of the phrase "hard reset", in the words of Inigo Montoya, "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
If what you meant is a factory reset, then the answer is it'll boot up with your custom ROM. If you really mean "hard reset", then uh... turn your phone back on and everything will be as it was when you turned it off.
I did mean factory reset - thank you.
Good to know it will boot up with my custom ROM. That's what I was hoping.
Thank you,
When is it recommendet to do an factory reset after updating?
If I even do an update for example from V54 to V54 do you think I should do an factory reset anyway?

A factory reset is usually necessary when flashing a new rom (Say Stock 2.1 > Simply Honey). However, if you're only updating a rom (Say Simply Honey v2.7 > Simply Honey v2.8) then you don't have to do a factory reset.

[Q] GPS no longer works

Hi,
I have an unlocked UK S2 phone on the stock 4.0.4 kernel. It's an Orange branded phone if that has any relevance.
I have noticed that my GPS no longer will fix at all. Left it for a good 30 minutes but no luck,
Googling suggests a hard reset or clearing the dalvik cache.
I'm unable to clear the cache as the phone is not rooted.
I then stumbled upon various threads about a bug which can cause the phone to be bricked if certain operations
are performed (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756242) on a 4.0.4 kernel and certain firmware versions for the flash memory - which mine appears to have!
I definitely don't want to brick my phone!
2 questions:
1. I'm not clear if I hard reset on stock 4.0.4 can brick it. I think so. But it's not clear (to me). Is that correct? And if so, is there a way to do a hard reset without the risk of bricking it? Any step-by-step instructions would be most helpful.
2. Any other suggestions that can get the GPS working again?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
ist flash a safe kernal like siyah 4.1.5 or an earlier version of Dorimanx without mali drivers using odin as the brick bug has been diabled..
This will allow you to do resets and wipes without any problems.
A hard reset for sgs2 is simply removing the battery and reinstalling it.
Factory reset will wipe user data and return the phone back to stock 4.0.4 without any customizations.
Hi,
Thanks for the reply. My badly worded email - when I said hard reset I was really meaning factory reset to wipe it.
I got the impression from the thread I linked to that the very act of flashing a kernel/wiping caches etc could cause the brick bug.
Or is that not correct?
I have since rooted my phone. I'm wondering if it is safe to just remove everything in the dalvik-cache directory from an adb command line prompt? The phone will obviously be still running at this point. Or would it be safer to clockwork mod recovery on and do it from there?

[Q] factory restore - loses root but restored.

So I did a factory reset to try to get rid of some of the lagging. I lost root in the process. No problem, I followed this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31754005&nocache=1
and got it back. Will I lose root again if I factory reset again?

[Q] XT910 Factory Reset - Soft Bricked?

So I've lurked around for a little bit, and think this community is awesome. Hopefully, you guys/gals can lend me a hand.
I just got a Galaxy S5 today, so I'm giving my XT910 to the GF. Went through phone settings, did a factory reset including internal data.
Booted up, and "Unfortunately, Setup has stopped" click okay, but the message returns, ad infinitum. So I went through the Recovery mode and did a factory reset that way. Setup still won't work when booting the phone and I can't seem to get past it.
It was on stock JB before. I had previously rooted it but have successfully done a factory reset and did not root it again since (assuming the factory reset removed the rooting process). North American phone/firmware.
Suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
Fixed it!
I was able to reflash an official ROM from sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=10 using EternityProjects RSD flash tool...

Safestrap & Factory Reset?

Forgive me if this has already been answered... I did a quick search with subject keywords, and didn't find anything..
Will doing a factory reset in phone's recovery remove safestrap? I'm assuming it will not, since safestrap is installed in the system partition, but I just want to make sure..
Also.. Are there any reasons not to do a factory reset in phone's recovery? Using hypderdrive, and having issues with s health crashing.. Did a search that recommended a factory wipe, and want to make sure this is something that's not going to force me to turn on the old computer and start up Odin..
Thanks!
