I saw this on another forum. Is this true? It would make it unusable to me, and I just ordered one before seeing this. Do we not have at least 12 GB free for apps?
"..an issue I do not know how to resolve. It comes w 4.3 pre installed but the internal storage is not unified (due to USB storage enabled) so just under 2GB is allocated as app storage. This being the setup on older android version we had the option to move individual apps to the secondary partition b within the app option but this being 4.3 this option does not exist so this really puts a damperbn usability of this device."

I'm guessing this is the US variation of the Mate 2 you are taking about. I already have a lot of apps installed and it's still telling me I have 4.2 gigs available for app storage. Hope that answers your question

If you add what it says is available to the what it says I'm using, it totals 6.81 GB. I doubt that includes system apps, as I said I have a lot installed. I had to keep them all on the phone because the ones I moved to the SD card the widgets didn't load on restart and I wasn't getting notifications.
Hope this helps you.

But 6.81 is pretty bad - some 16gb phones have around 12 gb for apps. What in the world is taking up so much memory? I need to install copilot maps which are over 4 gb plus all the other software I use. Don't know if this is going to work for me. Heck - I have almost 5.52 gb free for apps on a 8gb moto-g phone

Well, screen shots of my internal file system storage. My phone is rooted so I could free up more space deleting some system apps I don't use like Facebook but people had to reinstall the system apps they deleted to get the last update to install, and I don't feel like messing with that. I just disabled them. Can you install your co-pilot apps on the SD card?
Sent from my MT2L03
No, I don't think the maps can be loaded on sd card.
Darn - I purchased without checking this out - figured if my 8 gb phone had 5.52 gb free a 16 gb phone would have around 12. My fault for not doing proper research. Everyone was saying how much they like the phone. and I let that sway me. Guess I will send it back as 6.81 gb free in 2014 is almost $99 phone territory.
Looks like copilot is downloading fine. I'll let you know if I have issues after it completes.
It gives you the option to use extsd as default storage.
You are showing 12.69 GB available internal storage for apps. Is this correct? Or is it the 10.50 that is available to apps?
Yes 12.69 available. But when I go into settings > manage apps it states 5.8gb for apps. I believe it uses internal/external for app data, so I believe you'll be OK
check in the copilot options. maybe it has the ability to choose where to save the map data
NOKIA HERE does ... and its awesome btw

I see a lot of talk about the memory and how much is available. but I was wondering about installation of apps-
1, Where are they installed to?
2. How much room is there for them?
3. Is this shared with the RAM memory?
I'm keen to upgrade to an Android phone, but if the app storage is small then this would put me off.
So far app storage for me has not been a problem and I have been downloading a few. I have 102MB still free. Not sure how much was there to begin with though...
The memory for app storage is separate from the RAM - like it should be on WiMo and Symbian handsets.
If you root the Hero you can store apps on the SD card, though I have not done this.
I think unless you go on a download frenzy, you will be fine.
Most apps will allow storage of their cache / data on the SD in their settings menu - such as FeedR (RSS feed app), Twidroid (Twitter app) etc.
it really is nothing to worry about...i had to test a magic for my work a few months ago and one of the tests was to fill the internal memory and then try and use the phone...they'd had issues with windows mobile obviously....and it took over 130 apps installed before it got anywhere near full and still it worked fine for standard use.
seriously, unless you are installing EVERYTHING, then you'll be fine!
That puts my mind at rest. Thank you.
If you do run out of memory, you could always root it. Not that im advocating that or anything ;P
Friends
I have searched on numerous fronts but have never found the solution to my problem. The issue is, on the vibrant I have 2 GB internal memory for app installation, with 512 mb ram (I think) to run the apps, in addition to 16 GB of internal storage for files and what not.
However, having 1.4 GB 'app' memory free currently, whenever I install any further apps, some of the existing apps start to crash/restart whenever I need to use them. For example, I use LPP, and when I install some more apps on the phone, LPP homescreen icons disappear whatever action I do (open an app, use an app, etc), and then they reload for about 15-20 seconds when I go to the homescreen again. I have about 35-55 MB RAM free at any given time.
My question is, why give 2 GB app installation memory when you still cannot use it to install apps since they start giving you all sort of problems? I am running stock t-mobile eclair and have recently rooted my phone.
you know what, i think all you need is a task killer or clean your phone or something.. just find a way to free up some space.. 35-55MB is hella low.
Hmm, whats the normal free ram for stock 2.1 vibrant supposed to be? I have not tinkered around with my phone much so am wondering how it could have gotten low to that extent. All the apps that I use are also well known and from reputable developers...
Got any clues?
dunno when i was running 2.1 i was always at 80-120 free range with apps running..
try getting a task killer and kill all running apps..
also check settings > applications > running services > tap and kill processes you dont need running
This still does not answer my question about why there is 2 GB of app memory available...? regardless of RAM..?

Yeah, but then what about what I wrote in my first post? It does not make sense if you can 'theoretically' install 2 GB worth of apps but renders the phone useless in function?
Anyone who is actually using close to 2 GB worth of memory for apps on vibrant/Galaxy S?? Would love to hear what you have to say.
TI Backup is showing I have 456 apps installed which includes everything that came with the phone. I hear there is no limit (my old windows 6.5 phone was limited to 50 apps...after that all of the apps disappeared from the deinstall menu and you had to manually delete something to see them all again). Everything is installed to the internal card, nothing installed on the external SD card. I still have almost 9 gigs of free space so it is conceivable that 1500 apps is possible, though the phone may start to slow down at some point. With TI backup eating space along with the phone's built in android backup turned on I don't know how much of the free space will be eaten up.
So anyone over the 450 number?
There is a smaller area of the SD card put aside for apps..

I was on 448 but just downloaded another 3 to break 450. TiBu reporting 451 now. LOL

I don't see why you can't have as many apps as will fit on the internal storage...

space for apps
If there is a finite amout of space available for apps then there is definitely an upper limit to how many apps can be installed. i may be close to the limit since i tried installing a large app from amazon and received a message saying there was insufficient space. After I deinstalled Angry Birds Rio the nessage went away and the app installed. So to increase the amount of available space for apps you either have to increase the amount of allocated space for apps (whereever that directory is), delete other optional files like pics and music, or perhaps reformat.....I remember seeing soem sort of reformat option somewhere...maybe this post belongs in the dev forum since they are savvy with the system.

Yes. I just got apps to SD. I didn't know any apps were on the SD card, I am still curious exactly.how much space is available on the phone. I'll have to copy over the apps to my 2nd SD card.

mistake? no friend, that was no mistake they planned that. ics was a major change in android and the apps to sd card thing is history now (at least in stock roms)
and the reason is that external memory can never be as fast as internal memory in running and executing apps. imo

mistake about app2sd? any rooted and open source rom and kernel, can enable this feature. where does jb comes in picture? people have been using it since froyo custom roms.

internal memory is fast i agree, but it is still not faster than class 10 memory cards.
when i transfer data to internal memory it never went above 8 mbps....but with my class 10 memory card i can transfer with 16 mbps speed....so flash memory isnt always the fastest one

It is not history it's optional. It's a feature still embedded in ICS and Jelly Bean but it just needs to be turned on. They made it optional due to the devices like the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 which had no external memory. So having the feature would be pointless. It can be turned on though. I have a couple devices that has it work through your normal system settings.

The main issue with that is majority of consumers that are using these devices have no clue what a class is in relation to SD cards. Hell half of them think SD cards are SIM cards and vice versa and their pictures are on the SIM xD

I know the modern consumer is anything but "brilliant", but pictures on a SIM card? Lol. That may be a touch harsh, though it did get me to laugh.
On a side note, my current devices happen to be the exact same as yours. Fancy that.
Just rooted p769, installed app2sd and want to move apps. When run app2sd get this message:
"the device does not have a real primary external storage, or the primary external storage is emulated. Moving app to SD function may not be supported by this device."
any alternatives or any way to remap without app2sd or link2sd? I have not tried link2sd yet but it'll probably be similar. Would like to remap or move apps until JB/CM is available which will likely have it integrated.

Now i have a total of 180 apps, most of them are system, pre-installed, removed most bloatware. Don't want to waste internal storage memory completely, would like to keep some apps in phone and have a few hundred megs free internal, the rest moved to externa sd. Hope it's possible.
On the JB there are app2sd but all data of applications is still saving in phone memory.

He's saying that the larger apps such as for example real racing still save the data files to the sdcard. Now the difference is that you can move the actual app to the sdcard.

Yes, sorry for my bad English. We need to root this phone. Jelly bean is great.
I'm so jealous because I have the p769. I hope lg will update soon. I'm hoping with in another week.
One big issue nobody talks about or is completely unaware about is that everytime you download or store any media like movies, not only does the original space of the movie gets occupied, the media storage app in the phone magically increases the exact same amount of storage usage. You could verify it yourself by going into storage and select the view system apps option. So for example if you download a 2 gb movie, instead of going from 62-60gb storage space, it goes from 62-58gb storage space. This is very big issue which is also faced by many OnePlus devices. You cannot force stop the media storage app or delete any data or cache in it. The only temporary solutions which worked for some is deleting the recycle bin data, clearing unwanted data using files app and maybe resetting your device but the fact that this issue exists is a huge problem and is still unresolved for many users. I hope someone might be able to solve this issue or could at least help make realme aware about this issue.
Google has already solved it with Pixel 5. But Chinese manufacturers seem, kind of, lost in translation
Jokes apart, I have this same problem with OP 9RT and am really tired of deleting my videos, photos again and again..... Android 12 didn't solve it and after Oxygen OS 12 I have little hope that Android 13 will be any better.

I think I might have been wrong, after further inspection the Google files app showed the proper storage. I think it may be a problem of the storage app showing wrong storage for some reason instead of actually losing storage. I don't remember correctly if the issue was on the storage options in setting or Google files itself.

Are you sure?
Asking as I also used many Storage apps, like SD Maid etc. and some of them actually did not show the space taken by Media Storage app! As per them the storage was fine and free there.....
But then I found out that when the Media Storage size went over 50-52Gb, I couldn't install a huge game, like Genshin in my phone any more as Play Store showed the message that I have to uninstall some apps to make space!!!
So apparently, at least in my 9RT, the Play Store/System is considering the space shown in Media Storage as real!
This is the present situation in my phone, after many resets ....
Out of this 40Gb apps, the Media Storage is taking 30Gb....
Which, by now, I'm sure is consisting of that 25Gb videos and other app data
All I can hope for now is by some miracle, OP fix it or that Google brings the Pixel 7 to India...... as at least they listen to the Bug reports and do solve them even if it takes some time. OP 9 Pro has this problem since launch, and by now, in almost 1 year One Plus couldn't solve it....so I really have very little hope from them now.

How much storage do you have left? Cause I just looked into and remembered that you don't have to worry too much about the media storage app taking your space cause I don't think it actually affects your space even though it shows in your settings.
My phone has a total internal space of 256gb(my phone doesn't have a sd slot also) and as you can see, I've only used 204gb of my space but adding all the storage shown below(especially the video and app storage) I've almost used 300gb space which is almost impossible.
Another example is my Google files app which literally shows I've used 297gb even though my phone literally has a 256gb internal storage. So I think it's safe to assume that the media storage app doesn't actually cause much issue and you don't have to worry about it too much.
Interesting!
My Google Files is showing I have 66GB free (out of 128GB). But Downloads(4.1)+Videos (25) + Docs (4.7) + Apps (40) is totaling to 73.8GB. That comes to a total of 74+66 = 140GB!!!!
Now, taking that (as per Files) I have 66GB free, I have used up 62GB already. That may be as - Videos(25)+Downloads(4.1)+Docs (4.7)+ about 28GB of System, may be? I don't have any idea how much space Android 11/12 takes now a days....
Tomorrow I will fill my phone with some more videos to take the Media Storage app size to around 60GB at least (need some 35GB of movie files, which fortunately I have This should make the device think that I have used up all of my 128GB (incl. system) space. And then I will again try to install Genshin/WOT Blitz/Grid , any one game of about 3-4-5GB and see what the system says......
As it's past 12:30 at night in my end, I'm switching off for today now....Will report tomorrow about the storage experiment! Take care, bye!

Hi!!!
Became so busy I couldn't come to this thread.....
As per my last post, I filled up my phone towards up to 60GB and yup, my total storage went well over 128GB as per Files app And yeah, Play Store didn't let me install a small game of about 10MB as it showed the message of no space available.
Lost the screenshots, as I hard reset the phone again on the advice of some OnePlus customer care service provider. No result, it's still the same......

Well, lol, looks like that....
The short time I had with my Phone being over 128GB in size, it performed normal tasks well, no lag. But, can we record Videos/photos in that situation? As I just hard reset my phone, it will take some time to get filled up again. So I suppose, this time you'll have to test if we can record videos when our phones get well over their storage limits , provided you have the time off course

Never used any Third Party App Store. It was pure Android 12 issue which OnePlus developers didn't have the time to fix. It is solved now in Android 13.
