Hey everyone, Merry Christmas
Since the day I've brought my GSII I've been running VillainROM. It's great and I don't have any issues with it but I live in an area of exceptionally low signal. My network provider is Orange and I believe the Galaxy SII supports their UMA Signal Boost app that will allow me to connect to the Orange network via my home broadband (over WiFi) and thus give me signal for once!!
I've done some research and it doesn't seem like it's possible to just download an .apk of the Signal Boost app, so the only thing I can think of doing is completely wiping my phone and putting the latest official Orange UK/Galaxy SII ROM on it. While I love the benefits of a custom ROM, signal is more important to me (it is a phone, after all....)
I've never had to revert to stock, so could some kind soul please give me a guide on what I need to do? Where do I get the latest version of the Orange ROM? Do I flash it in the same way I would flash a custom ROM? If that's the case, so I then lose root access and recovery mode?
And finally...will my Tiny Tower game save be lost?? Or does Mobage keep game progress on their servers?? (Priorities, eh! haha)
Sorry for all the questions, any help that you can provide would be awesome.
EDIT- One final question I have just thought of. How do I also get the modem back to the original version? Will flashing everything back to stock solve this? I basically want to reset everything so that it's like I just purchased the phone from Orange.
One a mod has been posted recently ref UMA Signal Boost
Two Orange rom in the branded provider roms post flash via Odin .

You can always flash a different modem on a custom rom .

Sorry for my stupidity but I still don't really know what ROM I should be flashing from the list...there appear to be three: BVKE3, BVKG3 and BVKJ4. Shall I just pick any one that I fancy?
Once I've flashed the appropriate ROM, do I then update the modem manually myself via ODIN? If so, what modem do I select? Or could I install the new ROM, hook it up to Kies and it will do the rest for me?
Many thanks
Simon

Start with the latest rom flash via Odin try Kies for update though rom you have may be newer than kies version .
Test phone then a modem can be flashed via Odin as Phone start again with last one and work back .

Sorry mate, I don't really understand what you just said there. I am being a bit dense, I know that, but I'm after a really clear guide as I'm mega scared to ruining my phone.
From what I gather I need to do this:
1. Download the firmware: PDA:BVKJ4|PHONE:BVKJ4|CSC:ORAKJ4, BVKJ4 Stock Kernel and the correct modem (BVKJ4)
2. Download ODIN
3. Flash the firmware through ODIN using the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
4. Flash the BVKJ4 stock kernel
5. Flash the appropriate modem.
Does that round about right?
Click to collapse
Actually, I've just read somewhere that flashing the firmware does the kernel and modem all in one. Is that right?
EDIT- Okay, so I bit the bullet and flashed the BVKJ4 firmware. I'm now stuck in a boot loop.
So, I found this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20656074#post20656074 which told me to flash the KI3 firmware as this will do a full wipe and THEN install BVKJ4. I'm going to give this a try now and will report back...
EDIT 2 - Okay, so the KI3 flash worked I'm now reflashing the BVKJ4 firmware in the hope that it works and I can get that blasted Signal Boost app...
Update on what's happened since my last post. I have successfully updated to what I think is the latest firmware version on Orange (UK).
Kies now says that my phone cannot be updated. Can someone let me know what I should flash in order to allow Kies to manage this for me? Noe I've gone back to stock, it's just easier to allow Kies to sort it out for me, instead of me keeping up to date with the million threads on the internet with the latest ROMs.
Thanks.

KIES cannot update unless the provider has given an update to the KIES server . If you have flashed Orange firmware its they who supply KIES .Ask Orange for last update .
If you have flashed various roms you may find your product codes no longer match any firmware .You need a total removal of KIES and all KIES registry settings from your PC .

Well, prior to rooting my phone in the first place, Kies was fine with updating my firmware. I got it from Phones4U on release day, so it's not carrier branded. I believe (although I'm not 100% sure) that I wouldn't have had the Orange firmware but rather the generic Samsung firmware.
The only reason I'm flashing the Orange firmware is for Signal Boost. But as I said previously, I don't want to keep checking the internet for new software versions. When ICS is ready for example, I just want Kies to manage the update for me. Could you please let me know whether completely uninstalling Kies (and registry entries) will fix my issue? It's a lot of effort if it won't and I need to install a different firmware version instead.
Thanks.
It might is the answer .
You have gone down the non standard firmware path by rooting and installing custom roms thereby changing codes .
If the codes on your phone match a KIES update then it updates its as simple as that .
Basic problem is not saving a copy of original firmware and all its codes that might have helped .Find your original firmware flash it and see if KIES will update .

Bought an S2 today. Its a UK Orange phone.
Here's what I did.
Installed an insecure BVKE2 using Odin (original fw was same)
Rooted it, then installed CWM
Installed HyperDroid
Now when the phone booted, it has the HyperDroid rom. However, the baseband still shows the old BVKE2 version.
Does that matter? How do I change that to a newer version? Will I lose root if I flash some firmware via Odin?
Please give a detailed reply

The baseband of your phone is nothing but the modem or the software that communicates with the network. It is usually flashed separately from the ROM unless it is part of the CWM update file.
All modems work differently with networks and you will need to figure out which one is best for your needs. Certain ROM's such as CheckROM come with kitchen apps that allow you to download and apply modems from within the ROM.
Check this link for more info.
Cheers!
Thanks a lot man So I am just gonna flash a new modem and that baseband will change, right?

Seeing how easy it was to root my Samsung S2 with Gingerbread I tried it as well after the ICS update through Kies but after the process my phone just stays at the loading screen with the yellow triangle. I tried re-doing the steps and also tried a factory reset in recovery mode, cleared cache but it does not want to boot up. I then noticed I never looked at my firmware version and now I am unable to get this information as the phone does not start up.
Where do i start to get my phone working again. Below is all the details I could get from my phone:
Samsung GT-I9100
Serial Number: 355310040993713
I noticed when my phone was rooted with Gingerbread and I did the upgrade through KIES to ICS it removed my root access - is there a similiar way if one is not able to boot up the OS? Also recovery mode and download mode all work so I assume I do not have a brick?

No you don't have a brick.
1: flash the stock kernel if you know what ROM version you had using Odin.
2: flash again using Odin.
Also do the code wipe after flashing. And start from scratch.
Do not restore GB backups and use correct CF-Root to get root.
Thanks for the quick reply - but that is the problem. I have no idea what my kernel version is as I did not take it down before doing the rooting.

Well that was foolhardy.
How did you try to root after you updated to ICS then? Sounds like you tried to root by flashing a kernel; how did you know what kernel to use if you didn't know what your original kernel was?
You may need to flash a full stock firmware. That will include a stock kernel too.
well in that case flash a stock latest ICS using odin
after first boot dial *2767*3855#
it will wipe your phone but will fix the problems that may come later.
Ah okay - so I can use the "[GUIDE] Fix an unflashable or soft bricked GSII" (sorry cannot post links yet) on the xdadevelopers forum?
Would this also mean I am still able to use my phone with Samsung Kies or when does Samsung Kies normally stop working?
EDIT: I also stumpled across the "[ROM+Guide]Official i9100 Firmwares KL1/2/3/LA2,4/LB2,LPE/Q/7/2/F/S/4/7 Download" thread. Would it be safe in my case to grab one of the official firmware that matches my region or is this to risky?

Yeah I was indeed foolhardy - I used XXKPA ICS Android 4.0.3 Firmware. I just finished downloading the main files as per the "[GUIDE] Fix an unflashable or soft bricked GSII" guide. This should cover the full stock firmware and stock kernel?

Both recovery packages for GB and ICS both look like full firmwares. So yes, they will also include the kernel.
Just follow the guide.
Okay - the "[GUIDE] Fix an unflashable or soft bricked GSII" fixed my issue but now Samsung KIES gives me a "Your device does not support software upgrading through KIES".
Is there something else I can do or should I start looking at the "[ROM+Guide]Official i9100 Firmwares KL1/2/3/LA2,4/LB2,LPE/Q/7/2/F/S/4/7 Download" and can I just use the region closest or supported by mine?

Kies will only update if you currently have a firmware/CSC combination that matches your region, and your region is officially supported. That is not likely now that you followed that "fix an unflashable or soft bricked" guide. Also, if you are in a non-supported region, Kies won't work for updates either. For example, I am an I9100 user in the USA, where it was never officially released, so Kies doesn't work for me for updates.
But now that you've followed that guide, you are familiar with flashing your phone yourself, and can use the Official i9100 Firmware thread to download and flash whatever version you want. No need to rely on Kies.

Excellent - this is becoming very interesting. My region was supported (Namibia) but I bought it in Germany. I see the latest release date firmware actually includes a German version. Those the region actually change the language of the phone as well?
I was thinking of using this one. What is the deal with the stock kernel file - do I need that as I thought the firmware is all that is needed

You can choose any language that is included in the firmware after you flash it. Most, if not all, will include English and German.

The stock kernel is linked in case you need it. It is also included in the full firmware package. But if you root with an insecure kernel, or flash a different kernel that auto-roots, and for whatever reason want to flash back a stock kernel, it is there for you.

I think there is, but I don't know what the method is, as I've never had to do this, and have not been curious enough about it to research it for myself.
You don't have to grab any thing! Just see what very she has and you will find it in Sammobile or Intratech's thread or general forum.

because earlier it was'nt like this
for me cm9 is flawless to my needs and get me 10 12 hours on my usage
So I decided to un-root and use kies just to get an 'updated' stock version instead of my current 4.0.4 version and I get this error message:
"your device's current firmware version is not supported to update firmware via kies"
Looking on sammobile, the latest stock version for my csc they provide is 4.0.4 so apparently I'm screwed.
Is there a workaround to get the 4.1.2 stock version for my phone?
Details:
I9300-XXBLFB
CSC: I9300OJVBLF3
The reason for this is NFC seems to be broken on this version (as far as receiving files go) and I wanted to see if they fixed the issue in the updated rom.
You have to change your CSC.

Thats great news! I'll do that instead.
As far as I know, Samsung released an update for every version of the S3 (except mine) to JB 4.1.2.
Didn't even realize it until now as I've been flashing roms for 2 years now- about 2 days after I got the phone.
Hi all,
Been facing a weird issue ever since I flashed official 4.3 (NB6 with NA8 baseband) with Odin.
I've been able to flash roms back and forth earlier, but ever since the "official" 4.3, I no longer get network signal in KK roms. IMEI is empty and baseband is unknown. WiFi works fine though.
Tried flashing different modems but nothing works. The closest I got to getting a signal was for 1 second and then dropped (keeps getting and dropping). Searched the forums but it seems to be very rare.
Always have to restore to official 4.3 via Odin to get a working phone
Any ideas on this or maybe Sammy doesn't like me anymore ?

I had seen the thread earlier but it doesn't mention much except cm 10.1 and "some" setting lol.
Firmware is right (UAE) according to sammobile. I will look into CSC though. I used to be able to flash from official 4.1.2 to TW-based and AOKP-based 4.3 and 4.4 as well, but the official 4.3 firmware was bad news (pretty smooth rom though)
I'm guessing that the NB6 fw hampers baseband/radio to prevent KK roms from reaching S3 users. Kind of like a hidden Knox or something.
~ RazorMC
Tried CM 10.1.3 but no signal even with patched modem MG4.
This is really frustrating lol. I got the S3 to play with roms and now it's over?
Any other ideas ppl on what I could do for this?

This is rather an EFS problem than CSC.
Read the EFS threads.

Install Samsung kies 3 from here
http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/usefulsoftware/KIES/
Run kies then go to Tool > Firmware Upgrade and Installation
Follow the on screen instructions, this should completely reset the phone to a working condition.
MK6 is stable
Try to use MK6 complete suite, then apply MK6 patched modem and kernel not only patched modem. I don't know why people say flash MG4 modem, it will never work alone. You must need patched kernel to make it work or use ariza patch in older releases.

I prefer Odin over Kies any day. It's better for flashing imo.
Point is, I can use stock 4.3 rom without any problems, but my issue is that I can no longer change to non-TW roms, esp KK.

I don't get any signal on KitKat roms. IMEI is empty and baseband is unknown in "About" section. That is my issue.
Stock 4.3 works fine for me
I've tried MG4 and MK6 modem and restoring efs via Philz Recovery 6.07.9 but no luck. I get a network signal that keeps dropping most of the time. This is strange because I haven't come across this problem before. Everytime I have to flash stock via Odin.

EFS is ok and not damaged at all. The problem is that the system can't read the EFS, but I can't figure out what I need to do to get it to work.

are custom 4.3's working fine mate tried any????
[SOLVED]
Problem: Upgraded to official 4.3 and since then I have not been able to get network signals on 4.4-based roms. Stock 4.3 works fine.
Solution: Installed stock 4.1.2 (even though people said it doesn't work). Lost my signal and IMEI became 0049. Then I installed the patched MG4 modem and got imei and signal back. Then upgraded to Resurrection Remix rom (without GApps first) and still had signal.

Try to use MK6 complete suite, then apply MK6 patched modem and kernel not only patched modem. I don't know why people say flash MG4 modem, it will never work alone. You must need patched kernel to make it work or use ariza patch in older releases.

Hi,
I'm in the exact same situation, stock 4.3 work's fine but every time i flash some 4.4 rom, i lost imei / baseband (generic imei and unknown baseband) and the phone is just useless.
After i flashed a 4.4 rom and lost signal, i tried to flash every modem / patched modem that i could find on xda but no luck.
Any ideas of a method that would allow me to flash any 4.4 or 5.0 rom without losing imei / baseband ??
Thx
As you found this long dead thread why not try the solution they found?

Because I cannot get my imei / baseband back after flashing the modem on top of 4.1.2.
So I was wondering if there's anything else to try in my situation (stock tw 4.3)
Anyway, Thx for your help...
