[Q] Updating From Old Firmware - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Well I has been awhile since I've had some time to really mess with my phone. I finally have some time and have no idea where to start. I'm currently running Hyperdrive rls10, 4.2.2 on ME7. Yes you've read that right. The build is from october of last year. I've done some searching on here and the web and was wondering what options I have for updating, as I obviously cannot find anything coming from ME7 of last year to anything current. I have been rooting and installing roms since the good 'ol days of the Original Droid so I have a pretty good understanding of procedure, adb and such. Even if someone could throw me a path to follow in terms of which firmwares to jump to in order to get up to date would be fine as I would appreciate any help whatsoever.

You probably want to keep ME7 as your bootloader. You could always find a rom that's NC5 and install it.

I will have to take a look around to see what I can find then. Is there any specific reason you recommend this? Like I said, it has been quite awhile so I know there is a lot I have missed in a years time.

Surge is working on kexec and it's probably going to be for NC5. The only thing is that why would you want to keep steping up to another bootloader. You are the closest to MDK and if kexec works then you could upgrade to the bootloader it's on.

I've heard this came out a couple months ago, but my phone as yet to update on its own. When I try and check for an update, it says there are no updates to be found. And when I check my phone, my current software is 3.14.605.12. Anybody know how I can upgrade to the latest? Ever since I upgraded to ICS, my phone has been nothing but trouble for me, and I'm hoping if I upgrade to the latest that some of these problems might go away. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Here is the link to the global update: http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...ull-ruu-build-4-03-605-2-for-the-htc-rezound/ Lucky for you, since you haven't unlocked you bootloader or done anything otherwise, you can flash this in your bootloader and get the update with no problem.
Two notes on flashing that...first it's unofficial, so flashing it might risk your ability to get OTA's in the future. Second, it will wipe your data, apps, and internal storage. However, with those two caveats, it will work just fine.
I appreciate the input guys. However, both of you state I need to "flash" to do this - which looks to me (as stated above) it's an unofficial method of getting this update. I'm curious, is there a way I can do this a legit way? How come my phone did not take the update, while others did? How can I force my phone to update? I'd like to keep my phone as stock as possible and not do any modding to it.
If I really have no other options, then I guess flashing is my best bet. And considering the last phone I had that I took any time to mod was the first-gen iPhone, I have no clue what any of this lingo means - but I guess that's what Google is for. However if any of you have a quick link in mind you could post that might help me or at least point me in the right direction, it'd be appreciated. I looked at the link posted above to the actual ROM file and it has some simple install instructions, however I'm not sure if that's all I need to do considering I'm still fully stock. Thanks again guys for all your help.

your phone is up to date! like they said above and the global is unofficial, therefore putting the global ruu on your phone would be the latest!

Run the 4.03.605.2 RUU. Let it boot 1 time, then wipe and install shrike's CounterShrike CM9 ROM. It's seriously a great ROM and super smooth in comparison to stock. Basically, what this phone should have been from day 1.

My apologies, but I don't quite understand. You're saying my phone is up to date with the 3.14.x.x software, and the 4.03.x.x that I'm looking for is actually some "custom" ROM and unofficial?

think of it like getting a Blu-Ray Movie Early. They say when the Blu-ray should be released but some guys who know people can get an Early Copy but modify it to make it Better than its original Release. And this is all totally legal.

So this 4.03.x.x is just not out yet? I've been seeing news articles of them reporting on it as far back as August. Has it just not rolled out to every phone yet? If not, then I will continue to wait. I just thought my phone was messed up and wouldn't take the update.

But waiting on Verizon to Roll out the Update will take a loooonng time. but Sites have the Latest (Unofficial)Build. Unofficial is kind of like Alpha, and Beta. Unofficial is inbetween Alpha n Beta.
It basically gives u global function so if your not going to other countries don't even worry about it. I promise if u take the time to figure everything out and flash it you won't be able to tell a difference. Just skip it

A few people got 4.03.605.1 a week or two after the 3.14.605.12 OTA, but they never mass rolled it out. I know of one person on XDA who got it as an OTA. 4.03.605.2 surfaced a few days later on Android Police, but I haven't heard of anyone getting it as an OTA, and there hasn't been a peep out of Verizon on it.

Awesome, just what I needed to know. I will just be patient then. Thanks!
Yep, basically the only reason why the global update ever made it to light is because the manufacturers like HTC like to "splash test" on a few customers, let them report back bugs and what not, at this point if there aren't any bugs or the bugs that are present are workable, they will release the update in mass to the rest of the public.
Basically, a splash tester knew what they were doing, whipped together that nice little "flashable" ruu package and released it for the rest of us to hack up for our own uses. Usually, we look forward to these little splash test releases because they do contain newer bug fixes, but they also contain new kernels, libs and other useful things we need to continue making roms like aosp or sense 4 work better
I'd say if you want it, go ahead and flash it. Its just not official as they say because it did not arrive onto your phone via ota update directly from htc and verizon. Although it is an official build built by htc.

[Q] When will there be a way to root the latest OTA

Hi all, im just wondering if anyone knows the current status on the development for rooting the 4.3 (MJ7) update, or unlocking the bootloader, if possible. I am going to inherit a gs4 a little over half a year from now and im wondering if i will even be able to even root and put a rom on it like i did for my gs3. Do you think they will ever root & rom the last version they ever release for the phone? The owner always updates it no matter what i say, so would it be okay for him to update to the latest update in the future, or should i push even harder for him not to update?
Thanks

Maybe it's me. But if I'm dealing with people who do this kind of thing purely for the challenge of it, I don't ask them when they'll be done.
I'm not trying to be a smartass, but this kind of work is dealing with a bunch of unknowns. Like all other phones, eventually it'll likely be figured out. Until then, best you can do is tune into the channels they use to communicate with each other and you can gain an appreciation for both what they're up against and how they're progressing.
Should you continue to update? Each update will usually close the hole exploited to gain root. The process begins all over again. My experience on the two HTC devices I've had is that it takes several months to find the first exploit and several weeks to find new ones after each update.
You're a year and a half out from owning your own S4. Be comforted in the fact that by the time you get it, it'll be a piece of crap compared to the new phones that'll be out then.
Then again, my original Incredible and the Rezound are still quite usable phones today.

I can't see where it makes any difference. At this point in time I believe it's safe to say the S4 bootloader will never be unlocked. As for finding an exploit such as LOKI, I doubt it.
We do have SafeStrap which is a great achievement but not as good as LOKI as it won't allow ASOP ROMs to run.
Conclusion, learn to love the stock ROM, I believe you're going to have to live with it. You may be able to root which will allow you to remove bloat, let's hope so anyway....
NOTE: I should point out that 2 years from now I believe the manufacturers and carriers will have made ALL phones locked with no way to unlock or flash anything.
Meanwhile, the developers are still working so hope for the best but expect the worst.

Collecting Opinions!

I just got back home with my shiny new S4 and I can't wait to get the thing rooted and rom'd. But! Before I take the dive, I'd like to test the waters of this lovely phone's community.
If you have a few minutes to spare:
- What rom/kernel are you using? Why?
- What is one thing that you wish you knew about the S4 before flashing?
Thanks!

As far as I know (which I'm not 100%sure since I'm on mdk) you cannot flash custom roms yet if on the latest update (mj7 with Android 4.3) If you're lucky enough (unlikely) to get one with me7 firmware, you can flash custom roms with safestrap. This phone is not doing so well in the development area as I expected it would before release. Hopefully someone can figure out a way around the locked down bootloader

That makes it painfully obvious that you haven't read much around here.
What you first need to know is what firmware version you have. That determines what you can do.
What you asked is equivalent to saying that you have a car then asking what you can do to improve it - no data on what year or model, or what you want to do. Without that info, how can anyone help you? If you can't even be bothered to figure out what build you have to start with, nobody can suggest anything to help you.

I managed to figure that out a couple minutes ago. I actually got pushed to ME7 while I was rooting my S4 (ironic?) and was able to stop it after that. So, it seems I was one of the lucky(ish) ones. Would've been nice to stay at MDK, but SafeStrap seems to be one hell of a tool.

Hey there... I remember you from the Fascinate forums. I finally ended up getting an S4 about 2 1/2 months ago and for the most part it's a great device, but you can't expect near the same freedom as you had with the Fascinate.
When I got mine I ended up with ME7 so it sounds like you're in the same boat. I have mine rooted, but decided not to use Safestrap because of the limitations it brings (mainly the storage issue). I'm pretty happy with how I have mine set up and it's pretty snappy overall, but I really do wish I had gotten an MDK in order to really flash roms like I used to on my Fascinate.
If you choose to use Safestrap then go nuts and I hope you find some roms you like (Hyperdrive seems to get the most love around here from what I've noticed). I'll just quickly list off the modifications I did to mine that got it to where I like it:
-Froze all bloat with Titanium, including the SDM 1.0 (to prevent unwanted updates)
-Got rid of e911 icon and ongoing WiFi notification
-Installed the International Voice Dialer with call recording
-Installed Volume Boost mod (increased it around 50% over stock)
-Installed Xposed Framework so I could use Greenify features
-Used Greenify to hibernate all misbehaving apps (examples would be Facebook and Google Play Store) (... this increased battery life A LOT)
-Installed AdAway (adblocker)
-Turned all animations down to .5 in developer options and disabled all hovering effects on the lock screen
Doing all that really made this thing a lot better than it was, but I'm still hoping for a true bootloader unlock to start playing with it more. I have found a lot of the Touchwiz features to be quite useful, like the voice control stuff, camera app, etc, so I would probably stick with a modded Touchwiz rom if I had the option. Good luck.
edit: Oh and another thing you might not be aware of - the camera is set to 9.5MP by default in the app, you need to go into settings to use the native 13MP resolution.
One thing to note that no one mentioned (and in case you didn't read elsewhere) is that with SafeStrap you can not use ROMs with custom kernels. So that means no AOSP based ROMs like CM, Carbon, PACman and others since they are all using a custom kernel. At least until they get KEXEC working with SafeStrap (if they get it working). So basically you can only use modded TW roms with a stock kernel.

[Q] Bootloader issue i605

Short story:
Had the OTA update to 4.3 and tried to unlock the bootloader and lost it all. Now running MJ9 4.1.1 with VRALJB. I used the files from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2564495 thought it was supposted to be 4.3
I cant seem to get anything to work to unlock the bootloader. Once i reload the FW with the MJ9 it loads the recovery e3 loader. Im confused as to why it loads it after i reload. But i cant pull it up at bootup, only pulls up Odin mode.
I want to install CM 11 and CWM but not sure what i need to now. Ive tried MANY files, all but 2 fail with sboot.bin. One bootloops the other runs fine.
Bout to pull my hair out, shamefully stating that ive been at it for about 8 hours if not more and cant figure it out.
You can't

Nobody has figured out a workaround yet. This bootloader is fairly secure it seems, and no developers have put in the time to find a workaround.
I really hope a few are still around trying to unlock it, but if they are they aren't being vocal about it, as there has been absolutely zero news regarding a possible solution or if anyone is even trying.
It's a sad state for such a great phone. It seems as if everybody just bailed on it once the note 3 came out.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2615587
you could be a willing guinea pig. Read the whole thread. No one has yet tried with this to see if it would be the solution.
Anything past 4.1.2 is locked out per Verizon
Like you've been advised...as of present...there's no work around the bootloader
However Adam Outler appears to be working on it when he can
If anyone can get past it...it'll be him
This man's a true genius but he's always modest about his work...
Anyway I suggest you bring it back down to VRAMC3 or what flavor you prefer below 4.3 and build upon that...
I tried myself to root and mod with 4.3 but won't work because of the bootloader issue
So I revised down toVRAMC3 and have everything I need for now
Because that version runs for me the smoothest and most reliable
In the mean time...Im just being patient with the main front running developers for this phones breed!!
Adam always brainstorms these things...and Im confident he'll reason it out and produce a work around
But rassleberrys..not a flattering term btw... to Verizon for locking us outa the bootloader on our N2, s
With the latest OS upgrade..
But Im confident in Adams abilities....Although I don't know how he finds the time??
We're all lucky to have a pioneering genius so diligently working on a multitude of projects for us
Without the deserved recognition he should be getting from a lot more of this community than is displayed!!
Last I heard Adam was done working on Samsung bootloaders but he may have changed his stance.

This is how the issue started lol I did the casual program and everything seemed all fine even restarted as he said it would, then BAM triangle. Everytime i run his program it does its thing then kills my FW and i have to reload it everytime. Multi cords, multi USB ports. Ill be fine if i can just get 4.3 to update and go back stock until someone cracks it. Im on 4.1.1 rooted and it seems to be dragging more than 4.3. i will say im pleased to have the old google maps back lol works amazingly compared to the new maps...Im going to keep digging. I realized after i posted that 4.3 loader was locked.

Upgrading from android 4.1.1 due to "heartbleed bug"

Hi all. I am running 4.1.1 and have become aware my stock-rooted android version is at risk because of this latest "bug that affects SSL security. I like the "stock with goodies" rom that I have and want to keep everything the same as it is now. I read that you can flash an update file, but am concerned with the known issues this may cause. I cannot find any other custom rom that I like enough to want to switch to.
Android version: 4.1.1, Htc Sense 4+, Software version 3.16.651.3 710RD, HTC SDK API level 4.63, Baseband (Radio) 1.13.11.0830, Hboot 1.12 2222
TWRP version is 2.4.1.0
I want to stay rooted and be able to wifi tether without issues. Other roms I had issues with wifi tether among other things so Ive liked and stuck to this rom.
What would you do?

Before I give my input...what update file are you referring to? Was it an update file released from HTC, or from Google? Is it the 4.3 update that's been the latest rave around here (which is awesome, for the record)? Are you comfortable using Sense 5.0 (or 5.5)?
Sorry for all of the questions. While I can easily tell you that I would update, you don't seem very interested in doing so. Therefore, I need to know what you want, and you will get my educated answer.
My goal is to not be vulnerable to this SSL bug. I have not tried sense 5.0 or 5.5. Apparently google released a file to update to 4.3.

I'm in the same boat running a 4.1.1-based ROM ... MeanBean ... that I would like to keep, too, because I like it a lot. I'm not in a hurry to change because I do no financial transactions on my phone, plus I have a complicating factor in that my Sprint device has been flashed to run on Page Plus, the Verizon MVNO, and I'm concerned that making a really drastic change like to 4.3 or 4.4 will break the flash and force me to get that redone (although the person I bought the phone from tested it and flash survived a factory reset in TWRP, so I'm feeling pretty good that wiping it's not going to be an issue).
I've done a Titanium Backup of my user apps and used TWRP to create a nandroid ... I'm a noob but I'm learning ... and I've downloaded Yankees 2450's Y14 Aroma 4.1.2-based app to my SD card and I'm planning to flash it at some point, "when I get around to it," as much to get in on the ROM fun as out of any concern over HeartBleed (although I won't deny that some concern exists). Maybe that's one you should consider, the reviews in the development section seem pretty solid, and again it doesn't seem like it would be a massive change, that's why I'm going with it.
Thanks for your input. Im looking at that thread now
where 4.1.2 aroma roms are. There are quite a few versions.... not sure which would be best to try.

I downloaded the Y14 build which is the latest. I think 4.1.2 has the vulnerability but the actual HeartBleed bug hasn't been engaged as in 4.1.1.
Ah, i just downloaded the Y14 as well, but if theres still vulnerability there im not sure id feel okay with that.

Well the Hisense Sero 7 tablet I'm using to post (running 4.2.1) "has the vulnerability," but it's safe because HeartBleed isn't enabled. It's only enabled on 4.1.1 from everything I've heard.
Im going to give it a go now, and flash Y14.

Let me know how it works for you, I need to go ahead and flash mine, as noted I'm concerned about HeartBleed but not over panicking based in my usage.
So do you think this version 4.1.2 will ever have that ssl bug enabled? Im flashed and already having issues, only 1x signal and profile wont update =/
Activate this device does nothing as well. Even in WiFi settings, ALL networks show full bars, when i know many are very far away. Looks like im going back to my nandroid backup and decide what to do when i find more info. ALSO, 4G LTE did connect, but kept going away every 10 seconds or so, back to 1x which is not normal.

No, HeartBleed will not be enabled in anything save 4.1.1. You need to read up about the origin of this thing and the mechanism by how it is or isn't a threat.
Your only option is to go to a custom ROM that is not 4.1.1 based, or wait on HTC to issue the update for the stock ROM that they've promised, but have given no ETA for (and I wouldn't hold my breath).
I don't know if you have enough posts here to post on the development board ... that's another reason I've held off doing anything, although I'm getting close thanks to this thread ... but the developer of that ROM is very responsive to people with issues, and as I said the thing is very popular and seems pretty bulletproof from the response.
I promise I'm not his PR person, have never spoken to him, just found that ROM when I was looking for something that would be the least drastic change from what I'm running now, because of being flashed to Page Plus (which only gives me 3G, but I knew that going in). 4.3, you have to do more than just wipe and flash because of the partitions changes.
When I think about it, I don't see how changing the partitions on the phone will affect the functionality of the phone while using Page Plus. Maybe I'm looking at it incorrectly, but I don't reactivate my phone with Sprint every time that I flash a new rom, root it, change partitions, or anything at all. I could be wrong, though, for I have never flashed my phone to any other service.

I really don't know, thus my hesitance in my own situation. Had a "recommend a ROM thread locked because I was unaware that wasn't kosher, so I went back to the boards (which can be a daunting experience for a noob) and found that particular ROM and I've also downloaded CM10 stable.
Am basically just acclimating myself to this stuff (phone was rooted, running MeanBean and flashed to PP when I bought it, have never done any of this), learning how to use Titanium and TWRP to make backups, etc.
I''d be lying if I said HeartBleed wasn't a concern to me, but I'm not as panicked as the OP about it. I know I need to probably change, although I'm quite happy as is with MeanBean. Biggest priority aside from security is not having to spend $50 or so to get the phone reflashed to PP.
4.1.1 has three digits the ones that matter are the first two. 4.1.2 may still be vulnerable to heart bleed. As for flashing to page plus you can do that on your own for free there are guides for how to do this all over. The best bet for every one running below 4.3 is to update to a Rom that is 4.3+ also with that update comes many fixes for the most common phone issue one might have while running below 4.3. There are 3 fully functioning roms currently available for the evo running on the updated partitions. Sense 5.5 by chubbz and I captain's stock Rom. And vins viper 4.0 with sense 5.5. Now with all this knowledge I've given you go explore, test the waters jump in. And always remember to post a question Rom related after at least 1 hour of thread searching Google and running the basics of Rom flashing. Wipe caches, dalvik if all else factory reset.

Thanks for the advice. I have searched threads, as noted I have been practicing to test the waters ... I have a Titanium Backup of my apps and a Nandroid of current system with MeanBean on my SD card so I'm comfortable with that. I think I'm pretty clear on wiping the phone ... although I thought the factory reset took care of everything, do you still need to wipe caches/dalvik after that? Searching the threads is where I picked up on the 4.1.2 ROM which seems to be pretty bulletproof stable, and as far as I know HeartBleed isn't enabled in 4.1.2. I was basically looking at that as an intermediate step, again just to dip my foot in the pool of ROM flashing before attempting anything more elaborate. The instructions for going to 4.3 are a bit more complicated than wipe, flash, reboot, and I'd prefer to learn to swim a little better before jumping off the high board. Same with the Page Plus flashing. I'm sure I could eventually figure out how to do it myself, problem is I use my phone pretty much perpetually for work and can't afford to have it out of service for a millisecond, so it's worth the cost to me to get it done right first time, although I'd rather not break the flash in the first place. I've gotten some advice from folks who do such flashing that 4.3 will break it, every time.

So, I talked to a friend of mine who knows alot about alot... and he assured me that you will only be susceptible to heartbleed attacks on open or public wifi spots. So this bug does not affect anything over 3G/4G, which puts most of my concerns at risk. So don't be too worried if you don't constantly connect to open wifi networks you cannot completely trust. In conclusion, im not too concerned anymore and am going to leave the android version alone.
